Contest!

“Well,” says Admin, “since the number on Chet’s Facebook page reached 1000 – “

“And we should thank all those who spread the word and helped with that,” says Spence.

” – we should now announce the contest,” Admin continues, voice rising. Did Spence just interrupt him? Admin’s not one of those humans who deals with that nicely.

“Okay,” Spence says. “This is all about members of the nation within. Once a month one Friend of Chet will be chosen as Friend of the Month. The winning team – dog and human – will receive an autographed copy of the latest book in the series, and the Friend of the Month picture will be posted on the blog’s front page sidebar for that month. The choice will be random, based on complex formulas first devised by Isaac Newton and later refuted by Heisenberg.”

“So no need for anyone out there to post a picture every month,” Admin says. “Once you’re a Friend of Chet you’re in the pool.”

“Exactly. And that includes all the nation-withinners already in the Friends section.”

In the pool? Sounds good! I’m at the door.

Welcome Beau from Nashville.

Footnote from Spence: We’ll announce the first winner in early May. A similar contest will be happening at Chet’s FB page.

    Good morning!

This is my kind of contest, no thinking required. I am not sure about being in a pool, but I will give it a try. Towel? check Doggles? check Floaties? has anyone seen my floaties?

Oh, dear! Mom never posted my picture on Friends of Chet! I guess she had enough fun trying to make my avatar. Now I’ll have to bug her to put my picture — hmmmmm, which is my best side???

Good morning, Macy! I see you survived your storm last night — was it wicked bad? Did you have to use the trash can lid?

May I put my picture in Friend of Chets? And I’d love to swim in a pool with you Chet!

    Good morning all.

Good morning, Macy. I tried to watch the video but it kept stopping every 5 seconds. Did they say that the boy (slightly over weight boy) was a min-pin, but the girl who is blind is a min-pin mix? I always love that reason for giving up your dogs “Moving and couldn’t take them with”. Pooh to that. Barb would never move anywhere that I couldn’t go.

Contest sounds good. Some of us less creative types may stand a better chance. But poor Bee, does that mean she won’t be in it? Or Dawson when she comes back?

Hey Admin. Does this include us Kats?? We are NOT getting in the pool, but can we still be in the contest?

I’m already in the Friends so I’m already in the contest. Is this really a contest?

B, I need you to tell me if this is really a contest. Maybe it’s a drawing?

I say we should let the kats and two-leggeds be in the contest! (Unless one wins — then it’s not fair!)

Good idea, Sam! I can put my beautiful drawing that OTAS’ F did in the contest!!!

    Cool . . . in a pool . . . awesome!

Escape artists (shaking head here). Ours are Mattie, Mac and Rose. They love to run down the road to see the neighborhood dogs! Unless there are apples under the trees. Then they never make it out of the orchard.

We had a visitor who wanted to meet the Pack. She was in a wheelchair. She loved seeing the Pack through the fence and wanted to meet one of our group up close. I put Patsy on a leash and brought her out. She was a perfect angel. Went up and got rubbed and patted. She then sat next to me (as if she were perfectly trained) as the humans talked. What I didn’t realize is that Patsy got bored and ate through her leash. I turned around and walked back into the house. Patsy walked with me. It wasn’t until I got her in that I noticed she wasn’t hooked up at all!

    Riö, wonderful prayer.

Oh and the RED SOX WON! That’s 2!

You guys are cracking me up again. And, of course, Kirby and Sam are using “drawing” in different senses. Let’s see…contest or drawing….My guess would be that this is a drawing but I’ll check it out Sam. (Don’t worry. You’re still Princess.)

TTFN, y’all! Mom’s leaving for work early so she can run errands. Since one of those errands is buying kat food, I think she should just stay here so I can be on the computer longer! Oh, well! I’ll be back after she gets home from work tonight. Sigh! Don’t y’all have too much fun without me!!!

  13. Macy the Min-Pin
    10:55 am on April 11th, 2011

    Maybe a sweepstakes.

Bee, have you heard the program on NPR called “A Way With Words”? I thought for sure that you would be the host when I heard that it was about word usage, grammar and all things word.

Did I see that we have to submit a drawing? Could I do a painting instead?

  14. B.Stover
    10:58 am on April 11th, 2011

Since this does not require any skill on the part of the winner, I guess this is a drawing–like the lottery. (Has anyone ever read Shirley Jackson’s story? Spooky!) So it’s a drawing using classical physics to make the choice but with a bit of quantum theory thrown in to make it random.

I don’t know if that makes you feel better or worse Sam. (I still adore you.)

The noun “contest” and the verb “contest” are spelled the same but pronounced differently and that’s how we know the meaning. (Ain’t language great!)

  15. C. Harris
    11:07 am on April 11th, 2011

Hmmm….it sounds like Admin and Spence didn’t think this all the way through with the glitches about non-dog owners. It also seems like the more dogs you have, the more chances you’d have to win. So Rebecca has 42 dogs. Otherwise, Melanie has multiple chances although I have a hard time figuring out one newf from another as they all look alike to me.

  17. Rose
    11:14 am on April 11th, 2011

    Melanie:

My 2 cents as a Yankee fan….We let you win so you wouldn’t be 9 in the loss column. 🙂

  18. B.Stover
    11:22 am on April 11th, 2011

Mollypop: That is correct but only if Chet wants to continue calling this a contest and not a drawing. I’d like to hear what Sam thinks of the difference.

Macy: How cool! I’ve never heard it. What time is it on? I have NPR on my Google Reader but usually just listen to news or read their articles. Wonder if I could get “A Way With Words” there….I’ll check it out.

I’m gagging on this statement, but I find myself having something else in common with the kats…I am not getting in any pool, but I would be honored to be in the contest. (drawing) This is such an easy contest (drawing) as long as I don’t have to go near water.

    Beautiful prayer last night, Rio.

Stover, my mom has, of course, read the Shirley Jackson story, The Lottery.

B, I’ve never been in a contest where I was an entrant by virtue of my mere existence. I prefer the terms drawing or sweepstakes. Mom says she wins those a couple of times a week. She gets notified by email and wins millions of dollars.

Melanie, McKey is darling and it was really cool getting to hear what your voice sounds like. You should have gotten in the video too, with pigtails. Then you could have looked like a real tourist.

Barb finished your book, and is going to request the next one in the series at the library. It was fun. Should we send back or is there someone lese on the blog who would like to read Murder by Peacocks, by Donna Andrews?

    B, There’s no secret – it’s all scam email. Here’s one:

“Your Inheritance/Winning payment was paid out to the United Nations Organization, and they have succeeded in depositing your funds with us. They have ordered Western Union to take full responsibility in the transfer process of your funds, and we have received your application for the first installment of $7,600 USD from the total amount of $1,500,000.00 USD, One Million Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars.

For some security reasons, we need you to reconfirm your Name, Address, Age and Phone Number before receiving the MTCN for the first installment, and we will email you others after 24 hours of receiving each payment.”

  41. Sam

Here’s a funny one from United Parcel Service, not UPS. Note the poor English.

“The parcel was sent your home address.
And it will arrive within 7 business day.

More information and the tracking number are attached in document below.”

This one wants me to click on a link which is a no-no because that will load a virus on my computer.

  42. Wookie of Chevy Chase
    1:23 pm on April 11th, 2011

Hmmm. Contest versus drawing. Well it may depend on what Spence and Admin have in mind. If it is truly random, then it probably is a drawing. However, if there is a complex formula involved though, involving those dudes Newton (presumably not Fig) and Hiesenberg (although perhaps uncertain) then it may not be completely random, although the selection criteria would only be known to Spence and Admin, and that could tilt it towards a contest of sorts. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
Cool video, Melanie. I presume that was your voice in the background.

Bowing left and right! It was difficult Wölfie, but it had to be done. Now I can put that up on Chet’s friends. Unless you have a better one you want to use.

Just tell me what to put under it for the title.

Yes, that me talking and laughing and chortling. The next one, when I’m rested up, is about stoop sitting.

ZoĂ« just got back with the Pack. They are very proud of themselves. (Don’t listen Siber-H and Sam) They went SWIMMING!

Now they are allowed in the yard and dog room until they dry off. They do not understand why they can’t use the sofas. The sofas are better than chairs.

  48. BARB & MAGGIE
    2:41 pm on April 11th, 2011

We had a scammer sending emails to one of the real estate agents at Barb’s little office, and she almost took the bait. Starts out that he is a “doctor” in some foreign country, and is looking for a retirement home for he and wifey. She sent him some listings, then he writes back that he will buy one sight unseen, because it has such great curb appeal and for cash of course.
Wants to do a closing by mail (cause he is in this remote spot half way around the world). The poor agent is drooling, because business is slow, and this looks like such a sure thing. Barb read the emails and told her to be careful, it didn’t quite ring true.

Bottom line, the scam is that he wires you a “cashier’s check” for part of the funds, proceeds towards closing, and then backs out just before closing. Then he requests his money back. Turns out his funds are no good, which you find out after sending money back to him. According to the attorney, several realtors did get burned by this scam.

Contest or drawing…..fine be us. Since we’re not too good with contests, this is right up our alley. Wonder if it will be book 4?

We told Mom she has to find and update the map. Hopefully, it’s saved on the computer at home. We need locations for our newer members…just state and area (like southeast Texas for us). Know we need locations for BearSD, OleyHowlers, Rose). Can anyone think of any other newbies? We think we can figure out Snowhook’s general location.

  50. Melanie
    3:19 pm on April 11th, 2011

YSAS was almost scammed. First it sounded fine. Someone wanted his daughter tutored in Shakespeare. YSAS asked for details. Sounded fine.

    And then . . .

Sent YSAS a certified bank check and asked him to take it in and cash it but not a bank at a Western Union place. We began to think something was wrong. Why the money first? Why at a Western Union place?

Well, we don’t even live near a bank. So YSAS went down 26 miles to the bank and they told him it was counterfeit. They were looking in to it and so were the police. Not sure they ever found anyone.

  51. Macy the Min-Pin

I think we can pinpoint Snowhook down to a dog’s whisker of perfect!
We are still here at the south end of Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport. If you want to put a name on it we prefer Ft. Worth to Dallas. In fact we prefer anything to Dallas. But we digress…

Bee, the show was on Friday afternoon, but if it is like many of the NPR programs, there will be a podcast on the website.

Contest!… That type of contest came out of left field…grunt!…I was expecting a Quiz on TFAT…sniff!…I wonder if the Baker Boys software will chose the monthly winner…hmmm…There must be a way to outsmart that code. What if the same guy wins twice or even three times in a row? …grunt!…Do they get a book each time?

Clarkson!…It is so great to be able to see Clarkson move and talk. He’s so cool. I thought those keys were going to hit that car and the car alarm was going to go off…snort!….Lucky miss…heh!

Hey, C.Harris. The light outside woke me just before 6 today. The snow is gone on the south sides of houses. It’s almost Spring here, which is why we are having a snowstorm. It’s Murphy’s Law.

So is Rio being gone all day then showing up right after I double post and one word post. Ain’t life grand? A nap sounds good.

Doctors! … My friend went to see the doctor this morning and she got a nasal spray prescription in hopes of helping with all that snot.…snort!… Her legs are no better. Baseball!….Yes, in about 20 minutes the Rockies will meet up with the NY Mets….snort!… These road trips are a big test for the team because they did so poorly on the road last year…grunt!… They did win the Pirates series, so I am hoping their confidence is high now and they can take the Mets….sniff!

Posting!…Don’t get all Poodled Up, I will not post about baseball all night unless something funny, strange or truly exciting happens…grunt! … Don’t want to offend all the wibbly-wobblies out there for goodness sakes….grump! …SiberH, will you be able to watch the game tonight? I hope so…wuffle!

    Melanie!…What?…snuff!

I believe I meant to write Siber-H, Riö.

Also we had Blame it on Riö Hot Wings. Yummmm. Which I believe was a take off on the movie with Michael Caine and the fact that you love hot wings.

Rio, Yes, I am going to watch the game tonight. I am keeping all paws and tail crossed that the Rockies continue to do good on the road. It is the Mets for crying out loud. (whispering) We can’t post about the game tonight, sniff, sob, sob, but okay.

Melanie, so Rio will know what is going on…it was me (not Rio) who said that we loved the way you said the word, tourist.

Corgis!….Did the Corgis give a recipe for those Hot Wings?….snort!…If so, I will have to go back and find them. Not that she can eat them until this leg thing gets sorted out….grunt!…But it’s always nice to have a good recipe for company and potlucks, or so she says….sniff!

YAY Staff’s computer is working today. Evidently it was the ISP provider that was the problem last night.

Dawson, do you want me to post you on Friends of Chet if Staff can find a nice photo?

Staff says she is going to put her own photo up. This is her kind of contest. Everybody has an equal chance and it goes on for a long time so you get another chance if you don’t win the first time.

SiberH!…Yes, those who cry out against censorship usually bestow it upon others all the time. Get used to it pal…grump! …We will still be able to post about home runs, injuries or strange occurrences. Or if the score is OUT OF THIS WORLD….heh! …No worries there my friend. They cannot squash us completely…sniff! … You don’t really post that much during a game anyway….huffle!

SiberH!…Is it just us here or do you think Johnny Herra loves to get dirt down his pants every time he is running the bases…heh! ….I mean right off the bat, he has dirt down his pants…HA!…This is very interesting and funny to me, so I posted about it…sniff!

  84. Riö - The Evil Pug
    7:27 pm on April 11th, 2011

Dirt!…Now the first guy out for the Mets got tons of dirt down his pants…heh!…He is even unbuckling to try and get it out….snort!heh!heh!….Who says baseball isn’t fun?…heh!

  85. Melanie

Why would someone put dirt down his pants??

    Dazed and confused about baseball.

  86. Alice M. Johnson
    7:37 pm on April 11th, 2011

this is how a baseball player gets dirt down his pants.

    From Wired magazine.

  87. Siber-H
    7:38 pm on April 11th, 2011

lol I was wondering about the dirt myself. I’ll go with your thought that the Mets player was unbuckling his pants to get the dirt out because I had no idea why he was unbuckling his pants.
The dirt is almost as red as Oklahoma dirt.

    7:42 pm on April 11th, 2011

The Rangers do not put dirt down their pants. Yes, Mr. Husky they won again. What, 9-1 record or close anyway.

Now we have to go back and hear Melanie say tourist. I just thought she would sound more New England, but then she has been around. The country I mean. Been places…I will stop now before I make it worse.

  89. Macy the Min-Pin
    7:45 pm on April 11th, 2011

After reading the explanation, we may have to amend our previous statement. We NEVER SAW Rangers put dirt down their pants. No game tonight since they played this afternoon. My luck, dad taped the game. This min-pin wants to watch prancing with the purebreds.

I missed all of you, too
Something is wrong with the power supply on my computer and it goes off as soon as I get it on. The one who knows about such things will work on it…but not right now. I’m on his computer now.

Rangers!…I wonder how long they will keep up this winning streak with no dirt down their pants…heh!…Amazing to say the least. Daunting to say the most….grunt!…I wonder when the Rockies have to face these guys….gulp!

  93. Melanie

Yes, I have been around . . . THE COUNTRY! So that accent is Midwest, Chicago, Southern rural VA, and Eastern MA.

Snicker. What is really weird? I spent the first two years of my life in Japan. Sixteen years later I’m in a photography school with a Japanese guy who can speak English but with a heavy accent. I was the only one who could understand him. AND, I was the only one he could understand.

    Totally weird. . .

Anyhoo, I actually know how they actually get the dirt in their pants. I certainly washed enough uniforms for OTAS when he played. Sometimes my jokes go into left field.

Going to bed . . . Hope I’ll feel tip-top and full of energy tomorrow.

    I’ll be Melanie the Jet!

Google!….Is it just me or is goggle asking all you guys for your personal information in a “goggle survey 2011?” ….grump! …All these weird things keep popping up ever since she downloaded IE 8….growl!…So now we can’t use Goggle unless we fill out this freakin’ form with our personal information….huff!…Sort of like the facebookie thing Chet has going on. We are not part of that either. NO YOU CANNOT HAVE ACCESS TO MY PERSONAL INFORMATION ASSHOLES….snarl!

Calm!… Back to baseball and being calm…wheeze!

  95. Siber-H
    9:04 pm on April 11th, 2011

  96. Riö - The Evil Pug
    9:09 pm on April 11th, 2011

SiberH!….Baseball is the only answer to a calm quiet spirit….sniff!…Unless it is a very close game or if we lose…grunt!…But even then, it is an honest game. Asking nothing more than the loyalty we have for our teams…sigh!…I can be calm with this thing…snuffle!

  98. Riö - The Evil Pug
    9:26 pm on April 11th, 2011

Information!….They want first name, last name, email address, phone number…grunt!…It’s a marketing tool., we here do not need any more phone calls from marketing agencies…huff! …OH, and then you HAVE to HAVE a cell phone to even complete the survey…heh!…What sort of shit is this? …goodbye Google!..sniff!

Staff has saved them all but not made these yet. They sound yummy. I have to go get ready for bed now…Nighty night everyone, except Liz G’day Liz!

Blame it on Rio Hot Wings – Low sodium version
    2-3 lbs chicken wing sections
    4 TBLS butter
2 TBLS McIlhennys Tabasco Sauce–its MUCH lower in sodium
1 TBL cider or wine vinegar
    paprika
Preheat oven to 375. Spray cookie sheets/shallow backing pans with non stick spray. Lay chicken wing sections in a single layer in pans. Spray lightly with more non stick spray and dust with paprika if desired.
Bake at 375 for 30 minutes
Melt butter in a large saucepan. Add McIlhenny’s and vinegar. (You can use more or less Tabasco sauce, depending on how hot you like it) Keep warm over low heat.
Dump some of the cooked chicken wings into the butter sauce, cover the pan and shake well to coat all wings.
Remove wings, leaving butter sauce in the pan, add more cooked wings and repeat. If the wings use up all the butter sauce, simply melt more butter, add more McIlhenny’s and vinegar and keep going.
    Blue Cheese Dip
    ½ cup sour cream
    ½ cup Hellman’s Mayonaise
    4 oz Blue Cheese, crumbled
    1 tsp white vinegar
Mix all together, mashing blue cheese in. Serve with celery sticks and wings

Hi Barb and Maggie -Mama says she is “serving” prime rib, roast turkey and leg of lamb. But the recipes will all be for the side dishes, the veggies and potatoes and stuff like that, since we figure everyone knows how to do the main meat stuff, and they can pick their main dish and choose the sides to go with it.
    Sound ok to you?
Liz? Are you out there tonight? Do you want to bring some Vegamite? Now there’s a grocery thing that we can’t get over here. (And some folks say we are lucky about that)
