Contest

“What’s this about a contest?” says Admin.

“It’s a kind of two-headed thing,” says Spence.

Uh-oh. That reminds me of a real scary movie me and Bernie watched part of once; way too scary to go all the way to the end.

“The contest itself can’t be started until the number of fans on the facebook page reaches 1000,” Spence goes on.

“Sounds kind of arbitrary,” Admin says.

“Well, the contest will only work with at least that kind of number,” says Spence.

“Will there be prizes?”

“Can’t give any details at this point.”

“Prizes,” says Admin, “are as American as apple pie.”

Now they have my full attention. Apple pie is one of those things I can smell from blocks away, especially when the crust is actually a bit burned, which is the way I like it best. Not a single apple pie is baking in the neighborhood at the moment. Whoa! Isn’t this an American neighborhood? Don’t tell me we’re living in another country.

Good morning, Chet, Admin, Spence and all!

I love a good cherry pie myself!

Contest…I hate being kept in suspense!!!

I don’t like being kept in suspense either but I also don’t understand why the contest has to involve Facebook.

My girl took down her facebook page last summer when she was looking at colleges. Smart move, I say.

Hi B. Admin here. There are actually going to be two separate and concurrent contests, one here and one on facebook. The people who we rely on to organize these things believe a certain number of people have to be there before it will work properly. Does this make sense?

Good morning, y’all! Mom got a Facebook page, but only so she could see what everyone else was up to! Last year a friend of hers moved all the way across the country, then had twins, and she kept bugging Mom about getting on Facebook so she could see all the twins’ photos. So Mom finally bit the bullet and did it. But Mom doesn’t have her picture on it or write anything on it. And it took her until last week until she finally figured out where her “wall” is!

Chet: Not being a big Facebook person myself, the big question is: How close are you to having 1,000 friends? Because I’d be happy to “friend” you, if Mom and I can figure out how to do it!

Contests and pies. Two of my favorite things. Two is a good number. Two contests would be best. One for the facebook fans and one for the Luddites aka the Plunderers.

  8. Chet The Dog

Admin here, Dawson. Yes, that’s exactly it. But I wouldn’t say Luddites. I’d say something nicer, and will when I think of it.

I’m glad there will be two contests…I’m a real dinosaur when it comes to technology, and I don’t want my face or personal stuff out there in cyberspace. (Note my non-face on this site)

Admin: Thank you for attempting to give an answer to my dilemma. However, I still don’t understand why we need a certain number of people. That’s marketing-speak. (All you have to do is consider what the marketing people do to television shows to understand their limited capacity to understand humanity or the American way.) We have had contests on the blog before without knowing the numbers. Please don’t sell your souls and ours to marketing. They really think they know more than they, in fact, do.

  12. Kirby T. Penworthy
    10:01 am on March 4th, 2011

Admin: Are you still there? Maybe you can answer a non-contest question. Now that SQ is finished with TDWKTM and taken a relaxing vacation, is he starting right in with C&B #5? Or has the PA personality taken over and is hard at work, perhaps on Ingrid #4? No pressure or anything, just wondering!

  13. Chet The Dog
    10:08 am on March 4th, 2011

Admin here, B. I think you’ll see why a pool of a certain size is needed after the contest is announced. Such a pool already exists here at the blog. As for soul-selling, that won’t happen with anything I’m involved in. But isn’t marketing a good thing if the purpose is to introduce more readers to the Chet and Bernie books? Without readers there is no series, and the more readers the longer the life of the series.

  14. Chet The Dog
    10:15 am on March 4th, 2011

Well, Kirby, the answer to that one is that PA has a new middle-grade series starting next year from Philomel, a Penguin imprint. He loves that Penguin logo! The first book in the series is called Robbie Forester and the Outlaws of Sherwood Street. At the same time, over in Spence’s head, the idea for C&B is taking shape.

Maybe the marketing people have something to do with the number of people on the contest?

Good morning everyone! Well the moderator won’t let me tell a really funny story about Gilly – not sure why, but two attempts have been halted. And there aren’t any brand names, bad words or political comments in it either. Just Silly Gilly the Show Off Doggie doing her thing. Like sliding down hills, or herding snakes….she is quite the entertaining puppy.
    Weird, but entertaining.

  17. B.Stover
    11:13 am on March 4th, 2011

I’m pondering the necessity of marketing. One example that comes to mind is that I absolutely adore the Geico Gecko and always listen to him on tv. I also “like” him and have him on my Facebook page. However, I have never considered changing insurance companies. In fact I don’t even know what kind of insurance it is that they sell. What this demonsrates, I’m really not sure…perhaps more about me than anything else. (Similar to Reader-Response criticism.)

  18. Tupper and Gilly

And our favorite pie is PIZZA pie!
Maybe the contest could have pie prizes?
And Chet – we don’t mind in the least being called Luddites. We are rather proud of being free of the bonds of internet addiction.

  19. B.Stover

What movie was the pie song from? I like William Hurt.

  20. B.Stover
    11:35 am on March 4th, 2011

Luddites–we must get the word from the 19th century workers in England who organized to destroy manufacturing machinery because they were afraid the machines would replace them. (True in some cases.) Ned Ludd apparently came up with the idea. Here’s the Wikipedia article.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddite

  21. Tupper and Gilly
    11:45 am on March 4th, 2011

B.Stover – the movie was “Michael” with John Travolta as the overweight, atypical angel.
We never understood the lyric about pie being “sweet, salty and dry”. Doesn’t sound like the ideal pie to us.

  22. Kirby T. Penworthy
    11:46 am on March 4th, 2011

Bee: That is a scene from “Michael,” a movie about an angel (John Travolta) who comes to earth. William Hurt plays a tabloid reporter who is checking out Michael’s story. Andie MacDowell plays a dog trainer (who wants to be a songwriter). I can’t remember just how she fits into it. It’s not the best movie ever made, but I think it was kind of cute.

Goodness a lot happens when I go to sleep. Hope Riö can come through the camping and the anger.

When my ex left, I spent a lot of time kicking the trash compactor. It got pretty dented. My little guys at that point, helped. I didn’t know it was going to be something he wanted when I left. Snicker.

Thanks Kirby and T&G. I’ve heard of the movie but I’ve never seen it. (Whispering: I don’t like Travolta….but don’t tell anyone.)

G&BB: Nefarious–love that word and, yes, you used it correctly. From Latin nefarious>impious; from ne (the negative) and fas>divine law. It has come to mean wicked in a villainous way.

Ok, I support anything that exposes the Chet and Bernie series to a wider audience. I know nothing about marketing a book, but I’m sure it is very difficult to get the word out when a great series shows up. The Chet and Bernie series should be read and enjoyed by as many people as possible.

I have often wondered why the Chet and Bernie series was not released in mass market paperback. Mom does her part when she is in a bookstore by making sure Chet’s books are straightened up and can be seen by as many people as possible.

I first found DOI when I went to Barnes & Noble and they had the books stacked on a table several feet beyond the front door. They also had their “Barnes & Noble Recommends Main Selection” pamphlets next to the books. (I still have it in my copy of DOI.) I don’t remember how I was introduced to this blog.

I’m sorry I had to go to bed early last night. I just want to wish my best friend Rio all my best, and that his camping excursion will help him feel better. This blog would not be this blog without Rio; he is the catalyst (or maybe I should dogalyst or pugalyst) for all the good things we have done, from the quilt to the missions to the cyber-parties. I miss him already and just hope that the camping can help sort things out in his little pug head. Take care my dear friend. Wookie

Unlike before, I now speak from experience about facebook. During the Yukon Quest, I had to go to their wall to get their updates. I didn’t have to join facebook to do this, but it was not a good experience. Talk about clutter…that is a wall on facebook.

Wookie, we hope Rio feels better after a little time away. For some reason he felt persecuted and trashed yesterday. We re-read the postings and honestly did not get that sense at all. He actually picks on some of us much worse. So it must be that the grief and loss factor hit home. His friend has had a very tough year with the loss of both her father and grandma. And she had to hold it together for her mom. Hopefully, he will be back soon and feeling like his old self.

Speaking of food, Mom’s getting ready to go to the commissary, so she’ll be turning the computer off for awhile. I hope she gets me lots of good food to eat! She’s also going to the bookstore — a different bookstore than the one that told her that Quacky Baseball hadn’t been released yet! Maybe this one will have a copy she can bring home for me!!!

P.S. Dad says he doesn’t want me cheering for the Angels this year. Too bad, Dad!!!

Mama won’t let us have chocolate, but she does take Gilly and me when they go to the ocean for two weeks in September. When we go there, they go to the Lindt chocolate factory and ….dum da da dum…their OUTLET store….
Last year, they came home with boxes and boxes of chocolate. And tha was after they spent their vacation eating it!
(There is still some in the fridge, but without opposible thumbs, we are out of luck.)

T&G: Dad cheers for some other winged creatures call Orioles. Only they haven’t been very good lately. So he gets upset when Mom and I root for the Angels. He figures Mom can root for the Angels if she wants to — she was born out in California and has been a fan since she was a little girl — but he doesn’t like that she’s “corrupted” me and made me into an Angels fan, because he was the one who saved me and brought me to my forever home, so he thinks I ought to root for the Orioles instead.

Melanie — the Vermont chocolates are made by a company called Lake Champlain Chocolates. They are absolutely yummy. Their main factory is in Burlington, Vt (which you can visit and tour) and they have an outlet store in Waterbury, Vt. (very conveniently located only a mile or so past the Ben & Jery’s Factory). Grandpa loves chocolate covered ginger and they make the best. Link to their web page provided below.

    http://www.lakechamplainchocolates.com/

This is all on reputation only as THEY do not let me have any. I understand why, but I still don’t think it is fair.

    T&G: That was cute.

Mention of Philomel (Greek> love of song) made me think of Ovid’s Metamorphoses which I haven’t taught for a while. The story of Philomela, Procne and Tereus is quite gruesome. But speaking of marketing, it was Metamorphoses that disseminated the ancient Greek myths to the western world.

  43. BARB & MAGGIE
    4:03 pm on March 4th, 2011

G & B, We agree, we did not read any posts that we felt were especially harsh towards Rio. It seems lately that he has been angry and out of sorts. Hopefully he will come back and will be well rested and happy to be a member of the blog again. We wish him well.

Now a heads up to you guys, so you do not get concerned if we are MIA. Our key board at home is not working, as of this morning. Barb is going to try to get a new one tomorrow. We can read, but cannot post.

Bigger problem,, Barb’s son-in-law’s mother is in the hospital, and may not be recovering. She has had terminal brain cancer for 2 years and took a turn for the worse yesterday. If she passes, or if Barb need to go in to help with the Grands, we may not post for a few days. In other words, don’t be worried about us. We are ok.

My mother (from Nebraska) always talked about how much she missed Miller and Payne’s chocolates in Lincoln, even after she’d been her for fifty years!

DOI was released in paperback here – in fact I’ve never seen the hard cover. It has that cute illustration of Chet in a fedora and Bernie’s hibiscus shirt.

I like Mr Ludd, a man of vision – and I think it was Bernie who quoted Marx on the blog, saying too many useful machines make too many useless people.

I hope the contest will allow for the time delay to get to this hemisphere!

  46. B.Stover
    5:19 pm on March 4th, 2011

Liz: That cover is really different from the hardcover jacket on my copy of DOI. It’s an up-close back view of Chet and Bernie (only the right arm and hand of Bernie on the steering wheel)in the Porsche with the top down, blue sky with some white clouds, and a dirt road going into infinity. Chet is in the shotgun seat.

Mom is home. She is multitasking. She is watching NASCAR qualifying, visiting with her son and his fiance, on the blog, plus drinking and cooking! What a gal!

She is oohing and aahing over her drinkypoo which is Skyy citrus infused vodka with unsweetened grapefruit juice. She said she had a very tough week cause she traveled for work for 3 days out of 5 and one of those days she had her a$$ handed to her by some obnoxious employee and their union rep. She says that she just doesn’t have enough knowledge and experience in order to be effective in her role, but given time, she will be okay.

Mom has had 2 of those sour tasting drinks (she let me have a lap or two, blech!) while she is waiting for something that smells oh so very good to get out of the oven. She says it is a ground beef/veal/pork meatloaf with Sweet Baby Ray’s on top. The beeper in the kitchen just went off, so she got up, squirted on the Rays, then put 4 yellow potatoes in the oven to bake during the last 1/2 hour of cooking. I hope she gives me a bite of a hard corner of the meatloaf with some of that Ray’s on it.

Oh well. She did play sock with me this morning and did give me a bone when the oven began smelling oh so very delish!

We just finished watching a segment of America’s Test Kitchen which told how to make a perfect meatloaf. Dad is going to make one tomorrow.

How many friends does Chet have now on FB? are they close to 1000?

My cover is flipped the other way. I love Chet in that hat, and he’s so smart he had to be part BC but he’s so big, there’s got to be other stuff in there.

Bee, what happened to your avatar? (uh-oh, i sound like rio, the avatar policeman!!!)

Melanie. Mom asked me to respond directly on her behalf. Today has been my best day in quite a while. This morning I took a short walk with my dad ( we refer to that as a ” dad walk”) and then when dad came home from his busy place, him, mom and me took a longer walk around the neighborhood. I’ve been able to get up with or no assistance too. And my appetite is definitely back. Yum! Wookie

Macy, it’s just after 1 in the afternoon.

B, you were a question mark earlier, but now you’re back. Weird glitch! 605… i don’t see why the Plunderers can’t get a separate contest to the FBers….

Liz: According to a post from Admin above, we will be getting a separate contest.

Melanie: On Amazon it looks like Behind the Curtain and Down the Rabbit Hole are audio cds but Into the Dark is on cassette.

Hi Macy – Mama has been very busy doing paperwork all night, so we haven’t been able to be on.

Wookie we are so glad that you are doing better. Are you allowed to eat regular food while you are in treatment? If you can, and if appetite is a problem, Mama will send you her special cookie recipe for dogs. They are great and we never met a dog that didn’t like them.

Melanie – Mama decided that she is going to let the universe decide if we need a new baby sister. She filled out a loooonnng
application to the Corgi Rescue league. They keep it on file until they find the right dog. Mama says that if there is a little Corgi out there that needs us, she will come our way…she just keeps getting this strong feeling that there is a Corgi who is looking for us. We sure hope so!

And we think Chet is a BIG dog – a big brown dog, with eyes like Wookie, a heart as big as Kirby’s and a sense of humor like Franklin. That’s how we see him when we read the books.

Not some smart ass Border Collie. (they think they’re just SO cool cuz they can run faster than us)

Well Staff just finished looking through today and the end of yesterday’s blog. I believe that anger is one of the stages of grief that Rio’s friend has to go through. It is not the easiest one.

One weird thing I did when I had to grieve my divorce (so many years ago I can hardly remember)is go to live basketball games at the U of MN. It was back when Kevin McHale was a player there and they were very competitive. I got season tickets and would sit in the top of ‘the barn’ (Williams Arena) and scream my head off for the Golden Gophers. It was a very liberating experience to be able to scream at the top of my lungs in public. Sports is one of the few places that allows that behavior.

Baseball needs to get here soon. It will be good for Rio’s friend. I knew I was screaming for more that the team all those years ago. It took me quite a few seasons before I didn’t need it anymore. Practice your ‘primal scream’, dear friend of Rio.

Don’t yell at Rio though. Dogs are your friends.

That is a good word for what I was back then. I don’t need to watch basketball anymore though.

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing. Rio would never have let you get away with that. Heh.

It is true that Rio’s friend is much of the heart and soul of this blog. She is the one who started the quilt. We would have never done it without him/her. And I remember his friend emailing me early on in our acquaintance to tell me she appreciated my letting Rio jump all over Alice.

She said it made the blog much more interesting and that I should understand that she meant it all in fun.
It took Alice a little while to get with the program but she really likes having Rio to raz and to tease.

I think we should have a blog prayer for her in her time of trouble. She started blogging around the time her father died and then her grandmother just recently. She has lost a lot of friends and family this last year and has kept her grumbling character all through it.

I am not surprised that she is having a difficult time right now.
She writes the best prayers so it is hard to do one for her.

I hope that the creator will give her a little relief and help her find some happiness in this upcoming year. Help her with her knees and her heart and do what you can to ease her sorrow.
We are all together praying for your friend, Rio. You and Wookie are two of our best operatives and we need you in fighting form to lead us on more missions.

Hmmm that seemed to be more of a prayer for us. Be strong pugster.

    Love,
Alice Magnolia Johnson, who is as bad as she can be whenever she gets the chance.

Oh yes, we would not have made it to the “dark side” without it. I personally have no problem with page 2, but it seems that most folks do. Nite nite Corgis and Kats and Charris too.

    Macy out.
