Congratulations Rex!

The random number generator has spoken (in a heavy East German accent, circa 1956) and it said: “Rex.” Congratulations, Rex, Chet’s Friend of the Month for August.

Rex will be in the special place where Sassy has been, and as soon as we get a mailing address from Rex’s human companion (send to spence.quinn@gmail.com) a signed and paw-printed copy of A Fistful of Collars will be on its way.

“Next month,” says Admin, “this could be you! Just send in a photo to the Friends of Chet gallery. The random number generator does the rest!”

Gooood morning, everyone! And welcome Rex!

We kept mom up quite a bit last night patrolling the fence line until she put her foot down and locked the dog door 🙁 So,she’s going to nap for an hour or so.

    So long Sassy.

Congratulations to Rex with the stupendous stick.

Bacon and eggs this morning. I know why I was irritated with Dad for having the same thing day after day (when I do the same thing, for breakfast at least). 1. It’s bacon which is hard to resist, but I don’t need the extra fat. 2. It makes a mess while cooking so that I have to wash the bacon pan and wipe the stove. 3. It takes longer than Cheerios to prepare. I’m being selfish and a bit lazy and can tell I’m burnt out and ready to go home.

    Darah looks slim and trim.

    Zen Cat up top.

Dawson – what about microwaving the bacon? There is also the precooked bacon in the stores – haven’t tried it due to the ridiculous price, but it sure would be a time and mess saver.
(p.s. – turkey bacon doesn’t make a mess. And its pretty edible. It ain’t bacon, but it ain’t guilt either)

Bear is an Expert on Cooking Bacon! Easy peasy in the Oven.

Placing bacon on a cookie sheet and cooking in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes at 375 degrees makes less curl strips and sometimes less grease.

Also found some info on How to Avoid Mosquitoes:

    – Dress in light colored, loose fitting clothing.

    – Avoid bananas.

    – Take Vitamin B supplements.

    – Use Vick’s Vaporub.

    – Stay indoors.

Hmmmm, As soon as the gloaming occurs we are in the house!

Had my childhood sandwich. Cream cheese and green olives. When Zoë saw me make it, she had me make her one.

Having a bit of a problem with pain. Took a pill. Not high diving giraffes, more like strolling.

One tip for not getting bit by mosquitoes while outside is use a fan. Only works for sitting on the deck or patio, of course, but mosquitoes don’t like wind.

Now that CHobbit says that fluffy is good, I’m over the bacon thing. I don’t want to turn the oven on unless I have to but I like bacon cooked in the oven. Not sure about the microwave.

We have an appointment to get the pressure in Dad’s eyes measured today. It is way over at the Veteran’s Hospital.

I read the word “feckless” and wondered where on earth that came from.

The Scots said “feck” for “effect”. If you were without “effect” you were feckless.

    Cool.

Mom has been busy this morning getting the skunk trap set up and giving our neighbor instructions on how to use it. He likes doing this kind of stuff so mom lets him take charge. He is going to be our official skunk trapper.
There was a skunk scratching on our patio door in the middle of the night. ummm Mom would not let me out to take care of the problem. I’ve said this before, but she is no fun.

Whoops, one more thing . .
Dawson, saw this on Facebook, but didn’t like the way they did it.
    Mine:

6 to 7 oz of flavored yogurt (they said Greek, but I don’t know from Greek)
    1/4 cup rolled oats.
    Mix well in a jar.
I add a bit of whipped cream because I use fat free yogurt
Add fruit. They said 1/4 cup.
    HA!
I put in a 1/2 banana and a small handful of blueberries.
    Mix well.
    Put top on jar.
    Put in fridge for night.
Eat in the morning. It’s all ready and I don’t have to think.

  30. dawson
    1:49 pm on August 1st, 2013

Melanie: That sounds yummy for me but Dad would probably turn up his nose at the yogurt bit. He likes his oats hot and salty.

When I worked I would put some butter in a pan, throw in some spinach, zucchini, tomatoes or hot peppers (usually just one of those things) until they were sizzling hot, then throw in some beaten eggs and cheese. Top with a dollop of yogurt and a dash of flax oil and I was good to go.

Occasionally I would whip up a big batch of “creole sauce” then I would scramble my eggs with cheese and put a cup of the microwaved sauce on top. That sauce was tomato-based, heavy on the cumin and coriander with onions, peppers, bacon, sausage, salami type meats. Yummy. I would eat that every day for months.

Then I was on an oatmeal kick. I mixed my oats with all sorts of minced dried fruits and some slice almonds. Microwave for a couple minutes. Add milk.

Whoops! I’m meant to be getting ready to go.

We have done bacon in the microwave. It isn’t as messy as a frying pan, but also not as good. You wrap it in paper towel which absorbs the grease, but it tends to be a little tough and hard.

Thanks for the information on Maria.
Read it to Zoë. We lived close to Lynn at one point. Would love to see Nantucket again.

    Maria was once from Nantucket
She kept looking at stars up above it.
    One day in fog
    She tripped over a dog
And found more stars in her head than above it.

Mama seasons a pound of hamburg with Italian seasonings and lines a round cake pan with it. Then she puts in a layer of ( frozen) ricotta stuffed pasta shells and tops it with spaghetti sauce (usually leftover that she has frozen) and mozzarella cheese. 67. Barb & Maggie

Dawson, The morkets closing higher would be beneficial for retirees if they have investments – 401s, IRAs, etc that are funded with mutual funds, or individual stocks. Since retirees usually are not in a position to keep funding these investment vehicles, markets going higher means their existing investments are worth more, hence more future income.

Rio, Mom watched The Killing this season. She was very impressed with the show. She did not watch the 1st season. The episode last Sunday was the final episode for the season(we think). After you have watched it, let us know what you think. The episode earlier where Bullet got raped was almost more disturbing to us than the death….maybe because they didn’t show her murder, just when she was found in the trunk. Very intense show.

O’Nowlers, I don’t remember that the Raven ever had a limerick that could be told in polite society.

    Everyone’s dinner sounds good.
I have taken one more stroll with the giraffe pills. So

Driving home from Quilt Club tonight

Cirrus clouds stretch pale wisps across the wide blue sky.
In the west the sun is staining the clouds on the horizon a pale pink.
Ripe wheat fields flow like thick golden meringue along the road. Shelter belt trees stretch their shadows half way across the fields.
Another shadow, the shadow of the car, paces me down the road.
    The approach of the gloaming.

Staff – how lovely. And romantic. You old softie, you.

Melanie – yup, we believe we heard some of those limericks.

Rio – as much as you love old movies, haven’t you seen “Brigadoon”? Mama still sniffs every time she sees it, and she sees it a lot! The gloaming is a big part of that movie.

Here I am in the office with Momma while she is hard at work. She says she hates her job, but if she does then why does she keep working on it? She should have been in bed hours ago, instead of keeping me awake.

My Lady has been working a lot. She had two brig projects thrown her way recently. She is going to be as busy as a pug on Kat watch.

On a sad note, she found out that her uncle died tonight. He was her Bev’s brother. MaBelle is very sad tonight which makes my Lady sad. Dear Creator, Bless and keep his spirit. Please bless he didn’t suffer. Please comfort those who grieve his loss. Please bless that he will know he is loved. Amen.

    Night.
