Congratulations Rex!
The random number generator has spoken (in a heavy East German accent, circa 1956) and it said: “Rex.” Congratulations, Rex, Chet’s Friend of the Month for August.
Rex will be in the special place where Sassy has been, and as soon as we get a mailing address from Rex’s human companion (send to spence.quinn@gmail.com) a signed and paw-printed copy of A Fistful of Collars will be on its way.
“Next month,” says Admin, “this could be you! Just send in a photo to the Friends of Chet gallery. The random number generator does the rest!”
Welcome Winnie, Onus, Scooter, howling dude, Maddie, Crosby, goggled dude, Jackson G.

What better name for Chet’s Friend of the Month?
Rex . . the Quintessential Dog.
9:31 am on August 1st, 2013
Gooood morning, everyone! And welcome Rex!
We kept mom up quite a bit last night patrolling the fence line until she put her foot down and locked the dog door 🙁 So,she’s going to nap for an hour or so.
Have a talkative Thursday!

Well, pook.
Another dam dog.
9:43 am on August 1st, 2013

Rex leaping into August.
Herbs: I’m with you.
HOH: Nice photo.
9:51 am on August 1st, 2013
Congratulations Rex. You look like you’re having fun!
Rio: I have two more episodes of The Killing to be current. I’m going to watch them later today and I’ll let you know.
Good morning all.
10:08 am on August 1st, 2013
Well, rats, but at least I didn’t have to go to Jacqueline’s Dog Salon.
10:39 am on August 1st, 2013
So long Sassy.
Congratulations to Rex with the stupendous stick.
Bacon and eggs this morning. I know why I was irritated with Dad for having the same thing day after day (when I do the same thing, for breakfast at least). 1. It’s bacon which is hard to resist, but I don’t need the extra fat. 2. It makes a mess while cooking so that I have to wash the bacon pan and wipe the stove. 3. It takes longer than Cheerios to prepare. I’m being selfish and a bit lazy and can tell I’m burnt out and ready to go home.
Darah looks slim and trim.
Zen Cat up top.
10:50 am on August 1st, 2013
Dawson – what about microwaving the bacon? There is also the precooked bacon in the stores – haven’t tried it due to the ridiculous price, but it sure would be a time and mess saver.
(p.s. – turkey bacon doesn’t make a mess. And its pretty edible. It ain’t bacon, but it ain’t guilt either)
10:58 am on August 1st, 2013
Herb Kats: Rightio on the pretty edible. Any bacon is pretty! We love it and mom will buy it, occasionally.
11:18 am on August 1st, 2013
We had french toast and Schwans sausage patties this morning. I had real maple syrup and Mr.Staff had the nasty fake stuff he prefers.
Yum yum yum.
11:19 am on August 1st, 2013
Bear is an Expert on Cooking Bacon! Easy peasy in the Oven.
Placing bacon on a cookie sheet and cooking in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes at 375 degrees makes less curl strips and sometimes less grease.
Also found some info on How to Avoid Mosquitoes:
– Dress in light colored, loose fitting clothing.
– Avoid bananas.
– Take Vitamin B supplements.
– Use Vick’s Vaporub.
– Stay indoors.
11:21 am on August 1st, 2013
BSD: Hate the stay indoor, but it works…most od the time. Did get a bit at the kitchen table 🙁
12:34 pm on August 1st, 2013
Hmmmm, As soon as the gloaming occurs we are in the house!
Had my childhood sandwich. Cream cheese and green olives. When Zoë saw me make it, she had me make her one.
Having a bit of a problem with pain. Took a pill. Not high diving giraffes, more like strolling.
Masquers, Zoë agrees with the mask.
12:35 pm on August 1st, 2013
One tip for not getting bit by mosquitoes while outside is use a fan. Only works for sitting on the deck or patio, of course, but mosquitoes don’t like wind.
Now that CHobbit says that fluffy is good, I’m over the bacon thing. I don’t want to turn the oven on unless I have to but I like bacon cooked in the oven. Not sure about the microwave.
We have an appointment to get the pressure in Dad’s eyes measured today. It is way over at the Veteran’s Hospital.
12:40 pm on August 1st, 2013
I read the word “feckless” and wondered where on earth that came from.
The Scots said “feck” for “effect”. If you were without “effect” you were feckless.
Cool.
12:45 pm on August 1st, 2013
Congratulations Rex!!
Mom has been busy this morning getting the skunk trap set up and giving our neighbor instructions on how to use it. He likes doing this kind of stuff so mom lets him take charge. He is going to be our official skunk trapper.
There was a skunk scratching on our patio door in the middle of the night. ummm Mom would not let me out to take care of the problem. I’ve said this before, but she is no fun.
12:46 pm on August 1st, 2013
Congratulations, Rex. Hope I’m sending you and all the bloggers a wonderful month in August.

12:49 pm on August 1st, 2013
Great August calendar. So gooood looooking as usual! Tanks
12:49 pm on August 1st, 2013
Hi Tyb!
B.Stover: There is an interesting google doodle today.
1:07 pm on August 1st, 2013
I always think of “feckless” as “irresponsible.”
Love the word “gloaming.” It’s from Old English glom meaning dusk.
I’ll check out the Google Doodle.
1:12 pm on August 1st, 2013
Great picture of Darah, and great calendar from Tyb.
Stay indoors???? No way!
1:22 pm on August 1st, 2013
Siber-H, I would say that you would thank your mom, but you wouldn’t. Skunk equals perfume for dogs.
B.Stover, LOVE the word “gloaming”. It is apt as a description of an event.
Off to check out the Google.

I had never heard of Maria Mitchell. Thank you Dawson.
Here’s the Wikipedia article on her:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Mitchell
1:23 pm on August 1st, 2013
Tyb, Molly’s Mom told me you got some initials after your name. Could you please explain.
1:26 pm on August 1st, 2013
Whoops, one more thing . .
Dawson, saw this on Facebook, but didn’t like the way they did it.
Mine:
6 to 7 oz of flavored yogurt (they said Greek, but I don’t know from Greek)
1/4 cup rolled oats.
Mix well in a jar.
I add a bit of whipped cream because I use fat free yogurt
Add fruit. They said 1/4 cup.
HA!
I put in a 1/2 banana and a small handful of blueberries.
Mix well.
Put top on jar.
Put in fridge for night.
Eat in the morning. It’s all ready and I don’t have to think.
1:46 pm on August 1st, 2013
TYB: You’re the Best!
1:49 pm on August 1st, 2013
Melanie: That sounds yummy for me but Dad would probably turn up his nose at the yogurt bit. He likes his oats hot and salty.
When I worked I would put some butter in a pan, throw in some spinach, zucchini, tomatoes or hot peppers (usually just one of those things) until they were sizzling hot, then throw in some beaten eggs and cheese. Top with a dollop of yogurt and a dash of flax oil and I was good to go.
Occasionally I would whip up a big batch of “creole sauce” then I would scramble my eggs with cheese and put a cup of the microwaved sauce on top. That sauce was tomato-based, heavy on the cumin and coriander with onions, peppers, bacon, sausage, salami type meats. Yummy. I would eat that every day for months.
Then I was on an oatmeal kick. I mixed my oats with all sorts of minced dried fruits and some slice almonds. Microwave for a couple minutes. Add milk.
Whoops! I’m meant to be getting ready to go.
1:49 pm on August 1st, 2013
Melanie: That sounds Delish!
B: Gloaming is a Wonderful Word describing a Special Time of Day.
2:06 pm on August 1st, 2013
We are checking in. Barb left this morning before the new day started on the blog. Today was the last golf day for the kids. Ben is 7 and he hit a couple of drives as long as an adult woman coud do. Impressive. Barb got to ride around on the cart and keep score. They do 5 holes. Then lunch and back home.
Now time to read a little Rapid Fire (2nd in the Raine Stockton mystery series), then nap. Gosh, retirement is rough!
2:22 pm on August 1st, 2013
Barb&Magpie: Dog knows…we Deserve It!
2:23 pm on August 1st, 2013
Dawson: That Breakfast sounds Very familiar. Great minds think alike.
2:26 pm on August 1st, 2013
Spinach, eggs and cheddar cheese (or asparagus) and we are good to go! The Breakfast of Champions.
2:26 pm on August 1st, 2013
TYB, nice!
Dawson, yum!
Ow!
3:10 pm on August 1st, 2013
We have done bacon in the microwave. It isn’t as messy as a frying pan, but also not as good. You wrap it in paper towel which absorbs the grease, but it tends to be a little tough and hard.
May be a record high on Wall Street today!
3:32 pm on August 1st, 2013
Thumbs down to microwave cooking. It’s good for warm-ups but not much else. IMHO.
3:47 pm on August 1st, 2013
Barb is making me laugh about retirement. I agree with Bear….We deserve it!
4:04 pm on August 1st, 2013
New closing highs- the Dow, S&P and NASDAQ all closed at record highs! Good for us retirees!
4:07 pm on August 1st, 2013
Barb is very loquacious today. Good to hear.
4:13 pm on August 1st, 2013
Thanks for the information on Maria.
Read it to Zoë. We lived close to Lynn at one point. Would love to see Nantucket again.
Maria was once from Nantucket
She kept looking at stars up above it.
One day in fog
She tripped over a dog
And found more stars in her head than above it.
snicker
4:13 pm on August 1st, 2013
What the what? Loquacious? Ok we will agree that Barb is chatty and talkative. But doesn’t loquacious mean talkative about only subjects that they find interesting? We also happen to think tin futures are interesting!!!
4:15 pm on August 1st, 2013
Jeeze Louise, the blog didn’t think much of my limerick, and took my avatar away.
4:20 pm on August 1st, 2013
Loquacious Barb likes your limerick, Melanie.
4:22 pm on August 1st, 2013
B&M: Just means chatty or talkative. Nothing negative.
Melanie: Jeeze Louise may not have liked your poem, but the HOH rolled on the floor at home.
4:42 pm on August 1st, 2013
HOH, We are just ribbing you. We know you meant nothing negative. Although sometimes Barb just talk about things that many would not find interesting (ie. chickens or heirloom tomatoes, ad nauseam).
4:49 pm on August 1st, 2013
WE love chickens (roasted, fried, salad) and mom loves gardening so we fine lots of stuff (ah vocabulary) interesting.
4:56 pm on August 1st, 2013
Love the word loquacious.
5:02 pm on August 1st, 2013
There is at least one 2-legged on this here blog who would like to hear Loquacious Barb talk chickens and heirloom tomatoes ad nauseam. Not mentioning any names…
Maria! Heh heh!
5:10 pm on August 1st, 2013
Rex!…Bah Humbug!…grump!
5:21 pm on August 1st, 2013
Rio: I’m going to be watching the last two episodes of The Killing in just a bit.
5:29 pm on August 1st, 2013
Now why can’t two leggeds be this sweet to each other?

5:37 pm on August 1st, 2013
Because cats and dogs are more advanced than humans! That’s why.
5:38 pm on August 1st, 2013
Basil & Tupper: That is so sweet. Always knew ya’ll liked each other.
5:54 pm on August 1st, 2013
Stover!…Those are Tip-Top episodes…snort!…Sob!Sob!Sob!
6:13 pm on August 1st, 2013
Awwwww…Basil & Tupper.
6:22 pm on August 1st, 2013
Sorry about the limerick, B. Stover.
It’s just when I heard she was from Nantucket, I channeled the Raven. He loved limericks. We loved him anyway.
Dinner? Steamed clams and corn with a side of grapes. Delish.
6:29 pm on August 1st, 2013
Melanie: Loved your Limerick and your Dinner too.
6:37 pm on August 1st, 2013
Melanie, We are having roasted chichen (wispering), corn, zucchini and sliced tomato.
6:53 pm on August 1st, 2013
B&M Ah, ha! You got that idea from the HOH we bet.
6:56 pm on August 1st, 2013
Around here, we had Stuffed Shell Pie.
Mama seasons a pound of hamburg with Italian seasonings and lines a round cake pan with it. Then she puts in a layer of ( frozen) ricotta stuffed pasta shells and tops it with spaghetti sauce (usually leftover that she has frozen) and mozzarella cheese. Bake for an hour, and stand back as the “boys” dig in.
And we got a few bites too. Yum.
7:12 pm on August 1st, 2013
I’d come over to any of your houses for dinner.
Melanie: Nantucket does beg one to quote a limerick.
B&M: Why is the fact that all the markets closed higher good for retirees?
7:53 pm on August 1st, 2013
Our Nantuckett limerick would have youse blushing.
Dinner sounds like a great idea. Sigh. Pop is still at work, and Mom must now go back to work. There is no dinner on their horizon. Thankfully, we managed to have some kibble.
7:58 pm on August 1st, 2013
Rio: I watched the last two episodes of The Killing. I liked Bullet. I don’t understand why she was killed. I also don’t understand the point of the last episode.
8:04 pm on August 1st, 2013
My laptop has gone belly up. We are hoping it is the power supply. My tootsies are not cut out for the iPaw.
Tupper , you might want to take a look at Basil’s face. That does not look very loving to me. Maybe hatching a plan?
8:08 pm on August 1st, 2013
Dawson, The morkets closing higher would be beneficial for retirees if they have investments – 401s, IRAs, etc that are funded with mutual funds, or individual stocks. Since retirees usually are not in a position to keep funding these investment vehicles, markets going higher means their existing investments are worth more, hence more future income.
8:22 pm on August 1st, 2013
Stover!…I think the point of the last episode was to give the rest of the cast a vacation…sniff!… And to point out that she was not wrong about that guy being a killer…snort!…He had me fooled at first…but I think he killed his wife. This was the case that drove her insane, wasn’t it?…grunt!
8:24 pm on August 1st, 2013
Stover!…I do not understand why they removed one of the most interesting characters on the show…sniffle!…That does not make any sense to me…grunt!…Maybe the very talented actress has another commitment and could only be so many episodes…who knows.
8:25 pm on August 1st, 2013
Limericks!…I did not participate in the limericks – give me back my Avatar!…sniff!
8:50 pm on August 1st, 2013
There sometimes are poems on this blog,
Writ neither for cat nor for dog.
The rest they will say
Will take you away.
On that note we’ve earned us some grog.
(with apologies to everyone)
8:53 pm on August 1st, 2013
Grog!…Is grog the same thing as Shine?…snort!snort!
8:53 pm on August 1st, 2013
Perhaps The Killing will make more sense in future episodes.
8:57 pm on August 1st, 2013
Rio, are you looking for more country waters so soon?
9:00 pm on August 1st, 2013
Stover!…I am really hoping so. I bet they do a show on how Bullet came to her demise…sniff!…Also, I hope they explain the connection of the hang-man to the current killings…snort!…I thought both episodes were very well done though, her being car-jacked and that whole experience, and then going through the intense time trying to save this other loser…gasp!…She has to be exhausted.
9:03 pm on August 1st, 2013
Sharon!…No…grunt!…I was hoping Brother Redbone had a new delivery of Shine for me…sniff!…I hate to cut it close. I only have one case left…wheeze!…I feel a party coming on soon. Not sure why, but I do…heh!
9:05 pm on August 1st, 2013
Grog sounds good to us!
9:06 pm on August 1st, 2013
Herbs!…My friend says your recipe is very interesting and she is going to make a version of it one day…snort!…Instead of ricotta cheese she will use a dry cottage cheese mixture that has so much more flavor…chuffle!
9:06 pm on August 1st, 2013
Rio, you are one pugnacious pug.
9:07 pm on August 1st, 2013
Amalia’s dinner sounds very good. Will have to remember that one for the future!
9:10 pm on August 1st, 2013
Sharon!…That’s the nicest thing you’ve said to me all night…snort!
9:11 pm on August 1st, 2013
Rio, Have you watched Motive? We have seen it a couple of times and it is pretty good. On right now, so we may say good night.
9:12 pm on August 1st, 2013
SiberH!…He doesn’t know it, but he is one lucky Siber not being able to watch these games against the Atlanta Braves…grunt!…One lucky Siber.
9:13 pm on August 1st, 2013
Barb!…We here watched a couple of episodes, but we did not find them to our liking…sniff!…Maybe the show got better after the first 2, but we have not gone back to check…grunt!
9:27 pm on August 1st, 2013
Yup!…One lucky Siber…sniff!
Food!…Now I keep thinking about those Herb Kats recipe for goodness… slurp!…It is making me very, very hungry even though I ate my supper already…grunt!…Obviously there was not enough supper to keep me going all night long during this stressful game…sniff!
9:30 pm on August 1st, 2013
It’s not that late but we’re turning in as we we’re up early barking at butterfly farts. nighty night.
9:31 pm on August 1st, 2013
WERE…gah. tired 🙁
9:34 pm on August 1st, 2013
I like Motive. It’s on On Demand.
9:37 pm on August 1st, 2013
I also like Perception. A friend of mine said that Suits is good but I haven’t watched it yet. (Both are on On Demand.)
9:45 pm on August 1st, 2013
Stover!…My friend changed the channel from the mass murder of our team and now we are watching Perception…heh!…We have missed all of the previous episodes, but we know just enough to maybe gather what is up with the main characters…grunt!…Anyway, it is far less bloody than the baseball game we were watching…hmmmphhf!
9:56 pm on August 1st, 2013
We don’t get to watch a lot of the new tv shows. Mama’s schedule is so crazy that she never knows what night she might be home and have time to watch. So she is at her work table and the Storyteller is on the couch and they put on Netflix. Right now they are working their way through “Midsomer Murders”. They have done all of Poirot and Inspector Frost and the PD James.
9:57 pm on August 1st, 2013
Rio, Mom watched The Killing this season. She was very impressed with the show. She did not watch the 1st season. The episode last Sunday was the final episode for the season(we think). After you have watched it, let us know what you think. The episode earlier where Bullet got raped was almost more disturbing to us than the death….maybe because they didn’t show her murder, just when she was found in the trunk. Very intense show.
Dawson, whew!! No mosquitoes in winter in Alaska!!
10:03 pm on August 1st, 2013
Final!…That could not have been the final episode…sniff!… I will be very mad if it was…grump!
10:05 pm on August 1st, 2013
Midsomer!…Those are great shows. When my friend was out of work, the best time of my life, we used to watch those Midsomer Murder mysteries checked out from the library…snort!…It was great! We have many more to watch, but I think she is waiting till she finally tells the busy-place to go to hell before we start watching them again..heh!…I can’t wait for the day!…wooooo!
10:19 pm on August 1st, 2013
O’Nowlers, I don’t remember that the Raven ever had a limerick that could be told in polite society.
Everyone’s dinner sounds good.
I have taken one more stroll with the giraffe pills. So
TTFN

Driving home from Quilt Club tonight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa_tOFTOvd4
Cirrus clouds stretch pale wisps across the wide blue sky.
In the west the sun is staining the clouds on the horizon a pale pink.
Ripe wheat fields flow like thick golden meringue along the road. Shelter belt trees stretch their shadows half way across the fields.
Another shadow, the shadow of the car, paces me down the road.
The approach of the gloaming.
10:35 pm on August 1st, 2013
Raven!…He was my kind of guy…snort!…Me and him could have had a drink or two together while I listened to his limericks…snort!…I would have loved that.
10:36 pm on August 1st, 2013
Gloaming!…Why is this the first day I have ever heard of Gloaming??…sniff!…Isn’t that interesting or not?…grunt!
10:40 pm on August 1st, 2013
Staff: That was Beautiful.
Food & Grog. Still Hungry here too. See youse in the morning.
Nitey-nite – Bear
10:44 pm on August 1st, 2013
Bear!…It is good to have Bear back to remind me and everyone else that I AM NOT the biggest glutton on this here blog…heh!heh!
10:49 pm on August 1st, 2013
MIA!….I was really hoping that Mr.Tenzing, or even that Bellie, or gawd forbid those thieves, Pancho and Lefty, would show up tonight…grunt!…I may have to go to my cool soft bed with all my baseball toys in the right place without hearing from any of them tonight….gruffle!
11:24 pm on August 1st, 2013
Staff – how lovely. And romantic. You old softie, you.
Melanie – yup, we believe we heard some of those limericks.
Rio – as much as you love old movies, haven’t you seen “Brigadoon”? Mama still sniffs every time she sees it, and she sees it a lot! The gloaming is a big part of that movie.
11:35 pm on August 1st, 2013
Herbs!…We are watching a show on how not to be Fluffy right now…heh!heh!…Someone here says the only way not to be fluffy is to walk!walk!walk! and count yer celerys or was it calories…sniff!…Sometimes I have no idea what she is going on about….wheeze!
11:37 pm on August 1st, 2013
Goodnight!…Sleep tight!…Do not let those bed bugs bite…grunt!
12:55 am on August 2nd, 2013
Here I am in the office with Momma while she is hard at work. She says she hates her job, but if she does then why does she keep working on it? She should have been in bed hours ago, instead of keeping me awake.

My Lady has been working a lot. She had two brig projects thrown her way recently. She is going to be as busy as a pug on Kat watch.
On a sad note, she found out that her uncle died tonight. He was her Bev’s brother. MaBelle is very sad tonight which makes my Lady sad. Dear Creator, Bless and keep his spirit. Please bless he didn’t suffer. Please comfort those who grieve his loss. Please bless that he will know he is loved. Amen.
