Congratulations, Laika!

The random number generator has spoken! And if not actual words, then it did smoke and rumble a lot. Here’s Laika, Chet’s friend of the month for December. Her picture will be displayed over on the right until 2012! And her human companion will receive a copy of The Dog Who Knew Too Much, signed by Spencer Quinn. So, human companion, please send a mailing address to spence.quinn@gmail.com.

And welcome to today’s new FOC’s: Max in California, Beau (Rio’s new pal – how’s that working out, Rio?), flying dude, Tessa Marie-Marie, Oscar, Kylie.

Good Morning Wolfie and All. I do not consider it an “auto correct”, I consider this as “confusion software”.

Doesn’t Laika look great hanging out the window? Newfs can’t do that without goggles. They have too much loose skin.

    Acupuncture today! Woo Hoo!

Congratulations Laika. You’re beautiful. Sorry, Rio.

Mom has no self-discipline. She read the ARC last night and loved it. It’s a rich text with:
    ~ strong characters
~ lots of action, sometimes perilous
~ humor and social commentary (classic PSQA)
~ a touch of the paranormal (you’ll see)
    ~ a DOG!

Barb, I’m sending it on to you and if you will, send it on to Wookie. You both bid on it. Anyone else?

I voted for A.J. today. Hoping that SK sees an advertising opportunity in sponsoring Snowhook, even if A.J. doesn’t win their competition.

    Have a good day, Everybody.

Congratulations, Laika. Your picture on the blog all month will have us thinking its the new C&B book cover! But then we’ll wonder how Chet got demoted from shotgun.

You can turn off auto-correct, but then you won’t have spellcheck and run the risk of many typos like us.

I love the picture of Laika out the window. (Sorry guys but I don’t picture Chet looking like that.) Congratulations!!

Bluecat: Thank you for the summary. I bid on the ARC also but can wait for the hardcover since I’m busy winding up the semester anyway. (What does an ARC look like?) It’s very nice of you to share.

    Good morning all.

Good morning all. Busy blog this morning.

Congrats to Laika, not bad looking for a B.C. English Shepherd would have been better, tho!

Rio, Sorry you are not FOM, but at least you got mentioned up above. And that Beau is a good lookin fellow!

Bee, Special favor, please. Can you tell me what punctuation this sentence needs? It needs something after register I think, but is is a comma or semi-colon? “You do not need to pre-register just show up and enjoy the ride with a great group.”
YFS (Younger favorite son) has a website for which they paid beacoup bucks to a web designer, and Barb caught several glaring errors. This website for his new bike shop.

  12. Tyb
    10:49 am on December 1st, 2011

For what it’s worth, I think you need a semi colon after register. Let’s see if B agrees.

    11:03 am on December 1st, 2011

TYB, Thanks for the input. I think you are right.

  14. B.Stover
    11:28 am on December 1st, 2011

Barb: I would use a period after “pre-register” but you could also use a semi-colon. (A comma would make it a “comma splice”–meaning you “splice” two sentences with a common. That is not good. A semi-colon can be used between two sentences that are closely related as in your example.)

  15. BARB & MAGGIE
    11:34 am on December 1st, 2011

    Thanks a bunch!

  16. B.Stover
    11:39 am on December 1st, 2011

Barb: The reason that I think a period should be used rather than a semi-colon is that a short sentence (You do not need to pre-register) is more effective for directions which this seems to be. People don’t always read every word if there seem to be “too many words” and on a website semi-colons don’t always register with the reader.

Rio: Two things: First – why didn’t your friend listen to you and stay home from work? Dam. Now we’ll worry until she is home safe and sound tonight. Second – sorry about the FOC passover once again (but you did get an honorable mention) And, Beau got his wish (sort of) and is in close proximity, at least, to the 3 Pugitos.

Siber: Speaking of snow – along with the wind – looks like you may be getting a dusting of the white stuff also. Woo Hoo. Did your mom take you to the dog park this morning? Any power outages?

Tyb: Heh! I remembered to vote early this morning. You have us trained well.

Interesting that the new FOC is a border collie. Mom was up until almost one am finishing the Jon Katz book she just picked up from the library – Rose in a Storm. Sobbing through much of it, I might add. The first fiction book she has read written by Katz and, I believe, the first he has written.

I like Bluecat’s review of the new book. We are really looking forward to it.

Masquers, We did make it to the dog park this morning. It was a beautiful spring like morning, but the wind is just starting up now. Snow is predicted, (yeah, right) but not for today.

Howlers – Mama said to tell you that we all went to the post office today. We’re not sure why she thinks you would care where we went, but she seemed to think it was important. She thought Siber and Barb would want to know too. Huh? What’s up with that?
And she said she had made a little adjustment to something too.
Sometimes we don’t understand her at all.

All we know is that we saw the dreaded suitcases come out again. sigh. That means they are going to abandon us again. Which means we will have to sleep in Granpa’s easy chair instead of our own beds. And we will probably get extra snacks if we give him our “pitiful abandoned Corgi” look.
On the other hand it might be a great opportunity for us to do some holiday shipping…..here kitty, kitty, kitty. Come see what’s in the nice big box

Masquers, Sorry for the delayed response. Barb is working today, so has limited time. Not sure what we can say here, but here goes. IMO, JK is not a dog lover, like our favorite author, who definitely is. He has been known to use his dogs for a story line, then have at least one, if not more, put down when they became inconvenient for him. Also, his 2 Labs, that he talks about so much in his books, both died in mid life, due to very bad feeding habits on JK’s part. He does not take good care of his companions and is irresponsible. I believe he is self centered and egotistical. This might be hearsay, but I have read it on different websites, including reviews of his books. I will not buy or read him every again!!! Siber may want to jump in here and add his two-cents worth.

Aw Rio, you may not be Chet’s FOM but you’re our FOY (friend of the year). 🙂

I just finished paying $1,000 for a new water pump installation. I’ve always thought it was neat that I never had a water bill since I’ve always had well water but I guess the periodic maintenance and the cost of disasters are a trade off.

Barb: That is something we had not heard about Jon Katz. Mom says his latest story about the Border Collie is very good. As stated previously, unlike his previous books, it is a work of fiction. Most of it is told from the working dog’s point of view. If not for your dislike of the author, I think you would like it very much.

    Beautiful Patsy!!!

OK, now I’m on a roll. Also heard that when JK moved to the country he let his dogs run loose, and was very inconsiderate of neighbors and townspeople. Guess he figured that if he was in the country, he could do what he wanted. Another boo!

We are not lovers of JK either. I don’t remember which is his first, but
after I rescued Blou, my border collie, friends showered me with his books. I remember in one of the early ones he tells about giving up on a dog and putting him down. I have heard and read since that it’ s really all about Jon. The dogs are his vehicle. I felt when I was reading his work that he was self-centered and very selfish.

  47. Tyb
    4:31 pm on December 1st, 2011

    Wolfie,
I don’t mean to be argumentative and agree with you and B to a point about the period.
There is no question about whether it can be used correctly after pre-register. I agree with B, too, that the way people read on the internet makes short sentences preferable.
I went for the semi-colon because I just don’t like short, choppy sentences and wasn’t thinking “internet reader”. Actually I think it’s a coin toss.

Melanie: We loved the Newfie Strong video!

Tupper&Gilly: Are Mum and Dad off to another show? I know you miss them, but sounds like you have it pretty darn good with Gramp at the helm. Literally in the lap of luxury and living up to your name The Royals.

Well, sounds like we are not off base with our opinion of Jon.

As far as the period vs semi-colon, Barb told her daughter-in- law that either would be ok, and let her decide. I think she went with ; instead of 2 sentences.

Bluecat, not sure what to tell you about the ARC. Sort of feel that since we were not top bidder, we should have to wait till publish date. It was a wonderful, most generous offer on your part, but I think only one winner should get the thrill of holding the ARC in their hands (or paws). You are very kind.

Rio: I don’t the know answer but I think your friend should talk with her doctor.

What does “cover your six” or “on your six” mean?

  70. Melanie
    8:57 pm on December 1st, 2011

Hey Riö, did a fast search and yes, you need to fast before the test. Other things can also effect the tests. The time when the tests are taken. If she took the first test in the morning because she was fasting, and had blood taken later in the day for the second, that can affect the test. So can posture (lying down vs sitting up), one arm being more difficult to get blood out, exercising vigorously before the blood was taken AND a meal like Thanksgiving can also upset the results.

Weird. If the doc went all bonkers, I’d just take the test again and fast before hand.

  71. Melanie
    9:00 pm on December 1st, 2011

Whoops, your friend is paying for these tests and the guy did one he wasn’t supposed to do . . .. . . . .

Tell her not to pay it. Tell the doc she’ll do it again in February.

  73. Mollypop's Mom
    9:04 pm on December 1st, 2011

Rio – The test was not done correctly so the results are invalid. There should be NO medication based on this. Like Melanie said – do it again.

  74. Siber-H
    9:04 pm on December 1st, 2011

Rio, She needs to put a call into her doctors office and let him know what happened. I don’t know how it is where you live, but it might take a few days to get an answer from the doctor (probably through the nurse).

The doctor make want her to take a fasting test for cholesterol again or he may want her to wait until Feb. as orginally planned.

I don’t know what the lab tech thought he was doing by sending it in. He knows better than that. Us lay people know better than that.

I don’t want your friend to have to go on any meds she doesn’t need and if her cholesterol was good two months ago I suspect it still is.

  75. Melanie
    9:17 pm on December 1st, 2011

  76. Siber-H

Rio, another thought…If your friend talks to her doctor’s office, she should let them know she wasn’t fasting and she should also remind them that the doctor never ordered a cholesterol test.

Mom’s own personal experience is that they have to be reminded of a lot of things all the time.

Meds!….She is NOT going to take the medication and she IS going to call the Doctor tomorrow and say that she WILL take the test again as Planned at the end of February…grump!… Going from a 145 reading to really High when she has been eating good and exercising is ridiculous. The day of the test was a day the company had brought lunch in and it was food she would not normally eat and the test was done late in the afternoon…grrrrrr!

Santa!….We are watching Santa Clause is Coming To Town, this is helping to calm everyone down…snort!…Beau is so calm that he is sleeping on her lap….Gah!…That pisses me off to know end…sniff!

Melanie!….I do not understand the peeing table…sniff!…Or why Mac (or anyone) would want one….wuffle!

Dawson!… Geeze! If you have to be at the airport by 4am, what time are you going to have to get up and get ready?…..snort!…. Is Alice going to drive you to the airport? Maybe you should just stay up tonight and sleep on the plane with your Quilt….wuffle!

Rio: When your friend feels calmer can you ask her to check her SDD? It is about her trip north to Alaska which is only a few months away!

Rio: I don’t blame your friend for being upset. We’re fuming here just hearing about it. Doctors are so quick to prescribe medication. Grrrr. Don’t get me started…

Wolfie: Will get back to you tomorrow. Right now we’re in a brain fog.

Going to call it a night. Watching Super 8 on DVD.

We agree with all the other good advice you have gotten, Rio. Don’t pay for the test, don’t get upset about it, and don’t take the meds. The results were all flawed. Wait till Feb. She couldn’t have gone from 145 to high, in just a few months.

    Snowing here. Night all.

Hi everyone – quick note before bed.

Bee – “on your six” comes from military slang, especially from airforce target shooting. If 12 o’clock is directly in front of you, 6 o’clock is directly behind you. So, “watch your six” means watch your butt…”on your six” means someone is coming along right behind you, covering your butt.

Off to show time again. Mama does like this season for the show income, but its a very hard season too with shows every weekend and working for the CL in between.

Saying good night all – we probably won’t be back on til Monday. We do love staying with Gramp since he spoils us, but he doesn’t even know where the computer “on” switch is – he stays as far away from ‘puters as possible.

    Rio,
I also agree that you should complain to the doctor (through a nurse) that the test was not requested, not due, invalid because it was not done fasting and you are not paying it. Because it was not a fasting test I would refuse any change in the medication. I would request that they note this on your account and just in case have them notify the billing office.

PS You will probably still have to call the billing office but having it in your notes should help.

Patsy, gorgeous, girlfriend!! You look marvelous!

Read last night’s blog, but missed CHarris’s explanation of fur flowers creation. We will go back to that now as well as peek at Staff’s blog to see the purple quilt.

When Mom and her sisters were clearing out Grandma’s house, they kept finding antique quilts in the strangest places. They pulled an old roll-away bed (REALLY old) out of the attic. When they opened it up, there were several quilts tucked up between the folded up mattress. They all ended up with several to keep.
Only 1 or 2 showed any damage.

Tomorrow is Friday!! This weekend is slated to finish with the Christmas decorating. Lots to do.

Staff, Grandma also had an old Featherweight sewing machine with case. One of mom’s sisters took it because she really really really wanted it. But then she really really really wanted alot of the old things. Luckily, they all divided things up peacefully. Mom did end up with GreatGrandma’s old Singer with the treadle (it had been modified to electric). Grandma used to tell Mom ALL the time that it would sew through harness even though Mom didn’t plan on sewing any harnesses.

If they give you any flack tell them you wish to talk to the patient advocate. And if they give you more flack hire ‘McKey’ to talk to them.

Gus and BooBear, Yes those old Singers are really tough machines although if you do sew through leather regularly, except ‘glove’ leather, you can hurt the machine. Even the old cast iron ones. Even then they had special (not household) machines for doing the industrial type sewing.

OOOO a Featherweight. I have two so I have one to use and one for display. The one I use is cosmetically challenged so I don’t care if I scrape it with a pin or the scissors. The other one, that Dawson found for me, is in perfect shape so the poor thing has to live in it’s box. Sniff sniff sniff..

    Melanie,
It is a mystery to us what happened to Dawson and the goat. I do know that years ago she had a few. But I wasn’t around then, so I never heard this story.

Staff, what is the best way to store the old quilts? For the last several years, Mom has had them in a cedar chest, except for the one on the bed. But someone told us they should be stored in a pillow case in a regular closet.
