Congratulations John Baker!

“So,” says Spence, pouring coffee, “John Baker, member of the Inupiat tribe, won the Iditarod, setting a new record by three hours.”

“Got the stats?” says Admin.

“Eight days 19 hours 46 minutes,” Spence says. “Average speed 4.98 mph. Prize is $50,400 plus a new Dodge pickup. He had 10 dogs – wish we had the names – and of them he said, ‘They are willing to climb any obstacle and make the most of it. I’m really proud of them.’ As for Justin Savidis, I think he’s currently 38th.”

“Not too shabby.”

“Think Chet and Bernie will ever get up there?”

“To Jack London country? Wouldn’t surprise me.”

Hey! Are they talking about me and Bernie? I wait for more.

Welcome Daily.

Bee, enjoy your coffee and meeting.

Whitey-Lance and the gang are only about a mile from Shaktoolik. They have traveled 41 miles north up the coast from Unalakleet. There will be another long rest at Shaktoolik.

One of the bloggers from Anonymous Bloggers (rural Alaska) was very happy that Joh Baker, leaders Velvet & Snickers and team dogs won.

They had a party with salmon served on a bed of straw (cheese) and sprinkled with snow flakes (more cheese)

They also had balloons and part hats on their dogs. The dogs did not get the salmon though only some cheese.

Alice – is vorking. Plan to drive Commander Rio into frenzy is vorking. But vy are you paying Mike Baker? He is vell compensated by home office for his bugs, bloops and assorted bothers. If he is telling you he needs more pay, he lies for you. Maybe is time for him to be demoted….again.

Melanie – I don’t think we sent that crummy weather to you this time. Yesterday it reached 60 and it felt like spring is coming. For the next few days we’ll be in the 40’s but that’s okay. Skiing will continue for weeks yet because the ski hills have lots of snow. There was a bumper crop of snow – 238 inches and the base on the ski trails is 22 – 55 inches. That will last a long time.

Wookie!….I’m worried about my best Agent….snort!… I hope he didn’t go to Japan like he was talking about. I told him there were other guys specially trained for Search and Rescue, and that his abilities were needed here to Fetch the ARC when and if it ever materializes before the big Meltdown. ….sniffle!

Way too boring Rio. Besides I am not sure how much he really likes the salmon flavored treats. However he did say he would accept them in lieu of money. Maybe he gives them to his dogs.

I would NEVER use the Mission money for anything else, Rio. It is sacred.

So, Nattie, you are paying Mr Baker too? Hmmm. He must be living high on the fish these days.

Chet in Jack London Country would be great. I bet Chet would take over for a lead dog and save the day.

Only 9 dogs for Snowhook? Whitey is still there. Go Snowhook.

We are kind of worried about the radiation here as it will get to us first. Someone I know has ordered the pills from eBay.
It does sound pretty bad & they say the radiation gets in the milk, cattle and ground too. I guess they are not making cars either…

    12:00 pm on March 16th, 2011

Little excitement here. Barb’s daughter (Joe and Gus the Newfies mom) is going to be filmed for a tv commercial today. This national carpet company called her to see if they could take a look at her home, after a friend had recommended their place. They came out 2 weeks ago and took pictures and are coming back today to film. They take up your furniture, roll their carpet out and then put your furniture back for the shoot. They asked her to be in the commercial and she said that’s not really her thing, and she is shy, etc. Then they said they would pay her $600. She decided to get over her shyness!

  28. Melanie
    12:03 pm on March 16th, 2011

Mollie (APB): One site I saw had the radiation, at this point, headed towards Alaska. I think we better think about getting Wölfie to blur some pills up there to C. Harris.

In China an eleven month old Red Tibetan Mastiff was sold for $1.5 million dollars. YIKES!

His breeder said the person could recoup his money by putting the dog up for stud at $15,000 a “pop”.

Wow, sure hope that dog is fertile.

  29. Melanie
    12:04 pm on March 16th, 2011

Barb and MagPie: I think Joe and Gus should be in it too.

  30. Siber-H
    12:21 pm on March 16th, 2011

Mollie(ABP) The talking heads on tv keep saying that the USA has nothing to fear from the radiation in Japan. One doesn’t know what to believe and I’m afraid the Japaneese people are having the same problems trying to figure out what the truth is.

Lance Mackey is almost into Nome with just 7 dogs, but that is Lance Mackey…not an ordinary dog mushing mortal.

If they would put Joe and Gus in the commercial, more people, like my folks, would actually watch it.

    1:24 pm on March 16th, 2011

Hey everyone. Wookie checking in here. Rio, my mom nixed the idea of me going to Japan to help out, so I am still here in Chevy Chase. Actually I am feeling very good right now; this is my off week in terms of treatments, but I start again on Monday. I did have blood work drawn on Monday and the vet was very pleased with the results. Sorry for not posting the last couple of days, but my dad has been hogging the computer — it’s that busy place thing happening.
I did want to belatedly offer best wishes to Min Pin’s mom today for her meeting with the career counselor. Always remember, when one door closes, another one opens. It will all work out for the best in the end. Also, continuing good luck to Kirby’s boy with his interview progess for the paralegal position. Sorry I am late on all that, but blame my dad. Last, but not least, an extra special wooo wooo woof for Whitey-Lance and the rest of the Snowhook team. On to Nome! Wookie

Macy’s Mom – all the places my Mom worked would only verify that a person was employed there from this date to that date. Nothing more. If they did anything to jeopardize a person’s next employment, there would be lawsuits. So you have nothing to worry about. You were under- employed at that big box and now you have an opportunity to use your skills.

    2:48 pm on March 16th, 2011

Melanie and Siber, Kelly thought it would be cool to have the dogs in the commercial, but they said dogs can be “boisterous and hard to work with when untrained for the camera”. Guess they don’t know how laid-back Newfs can be.

    Can we say Empire Carpets?

  35. Siber-H
    3:00 pm on March 16th, 2011

Maggie, Maybe the carpet company will put the commercial up on their website and we will get to see it. I can’t remember seeing any commercials for Empire carpets on tv, but, hey, if they don’t have dogs in them, we don’t watch them.

Melanie, I think that is a good head shot. I can see all sorts of possibilities for that face to play different characters. We need Rio’s opinion.

Melanie and all: I wish we knew more about what was happening with the possible meltdown in Japan. They are probably doing their best but the news isn’t very forthcoming. Nothing good comes from an overheated and crippled nuclear power plant.

I am very pleased with John Baker’s win.

Chet & Bernie are always welcome up here. But if you come in the summer, be prepared to be drenched in mosquito repellant. Dawson, do you have lots of mosquitoes also?

Whitey-Lance and the team are on the move!! They are headed north for the village of Koyuk. They will travel for about 10 miles on land and then they will be on the sea ice for a long distance until they get to Koyuk.
I am slightly nervous about the sea ice only because two different teams have quit out there in the middle of nowhere. The dogs refused to go any further, were not having fun anymore, and told their musher to send a message through other mushers for the Iditarod Air Force to come get them out of there and fly them back home. Their mushers had no choice but to scratch.
    North to Nome, Snowhook!

Siber-H: Is the sea ice like a frozen river? Could the ice break and they fall in?

  44. Siber-H
    4:10 pm on March 16th, 2011

Don’t hold me to this Mollie, but I think the sea ice is easier to travel on than a frozen river. The Iditarod Trail Committee puts up trail markers and marks the best route across the sea ice for the teams. There is no danger of falling in.
The worst problem has always been storms and wind on the part of the trip, but right now, the weather is holding and is good.

Let’s put it this way, you know how I hate water…I wouldn’t hesitate to travel across sea ice.

Wow! That video of the dog buddies is as disturbing as it is moving. I am glad to find out that the two dogs were rescued and not just filmed. I was worried for a bit there. The video reminds one of the type of events that happened in the wake of Katrina.

Congrats to John Baker and the mushers! I (ahem) have a bit of a tendency to pull on lead so my mom taught me that when she says “mush!) I can go full out and pull her wailing down the block. But when she says “fini” then I have to walk nicely. I am still working on that part. I got the mush part down pat!

Riö, trying to find that, but I don’t seem to have the correct link. Could you put it up?

  53. Siber-H
    6:51 pm on March 16th, 2011

Most long distance mushers at one time or another experience these hallucinations. They go so long without enough sleep. Remember, the dogs get enough sleep, but the mushers don’t. Some studies suggest that these hallucinations are caused by dehydration instead of sleep loss. An example of one…Newton Marshall thought that along a remote section of the trail, a family of four was standing there waving at him as he mushed on by. He cheerfully returned the wave. The family of four turned out to be four spruce trees.

High altitude mountain climbers have also experienced these hallucinations.

The Sharpies look very strong…all they need are some booties and jackets and they are good to go.

We have had Canada Geese come into our yard. We are across from a slough. A couple of years ago a pair of geese landed on the roof of our decrepit old barn every day for about a week. From there they yelled at their friends (or enemies) in the slough for hours. Gosh they are noisy. You can see how far away we are from the barn in the video in this blog post.

Just checking in. When I booted up my computer, I found this site quite by accident.
It’s hard to look at, but if you scrool all the way down and read the text, you’ll see that both dogs have been rescued. There are several sites collection money for the animal victims of the tsunami. We’ve looked at several of them and like the animal rescue site.
I won’t put the URL up here because I understand it’s a no no to have two of anything in a post. Just googling “the animal rescue site” should get you to it if you’re interested.

Mom says thanks to Wooks and Pollymop for the good thoughts. The counselor was helpful in getting mom’s state sponsored resume sorted out so that she will get more jobs to choose from that are actually jobs that she likes AND is qualified for. And No, she is not willing to drive an hour for 9 dollars and hour. Or call people and harrass them. Or sell stuff over the phone. I got called into work today so I left in a hurry this morning.

Mollie ABP: The BC government is saying they don’t have any health concerns regarding the radiation blowing from Japan into the Pacific Ocean on its way to us. They’ve lied to me before and I do not trust them one iota. They have ordered pharmacies and doctors NOT to dispense the potassium iodide pills that could help avert thyroid cancer. What’s a cautious person to do? I’m popping a bucket of popcorn and totally salting the hell out of it. And…why not…butter too…lots of it.

And my advice to the Japanese who are anywhere near that radiation. GET OUT NOW.

Barb and Maggie: Congratulations on the commercial. That would never happen in my house in a million years. Right now there is a mattress in the living room because the bedroom is being painted. In reality, no painting has happened and it’s been a month.

Melanie: A red tibetan mastiff for 1.5 million. Unbelievable!

This is different from mushers having hallucinations but still interesting. Years ago when I had a 2-month job in Point Barrow, my Dad warned me that I might see optical illusions. He and his crew spent a lot of time in the arctic doing land surveys and he particularly mentioned Point Barrow. He said that sometimes they would swear that they could see the lights of a large city on the horizon. I never saw any but then again I spent 95% of my time inside, working 12+ hours a day to get the job done.

Rio, we only look tough. You would probably wipe us up. I am not too sure about the booties thing. Cosmo (the chocolate color pei) wears all terrain booties here in Texas. It is good on the hot sidewalks but he has allergies and they keep his feet off the grass. He doesn’t like them very much. He does this little hop dance thing while mom says #@$%?!! a lot.

Dawson!… I thought you were talking to your imaginary friend again this morning after your Three word post.….grump!…What have I told you about the blog count? You hardly ever post on the Dark Side, so what do you care!….grumble!

The stores here have sold out of potasssium iodide pills in the greater Albuq. area. I am very concerned about Japan, but this is nutty overreacting here in NM.
Mom and I like Dawson’s idea of buttered, salted, popcorn.

C.Harris, I wonder if what your dad saw was what is called ice blink. That is interesting. Arctic explorers in the 19th century saw mountain ranges that weren’t there.

    Hi Dawson,
Just stay indoors and you will be fine. heh heh heh heh heh. (Quote from Japanese government one day ago.)
You should hear Dad muttering about this. He said that the gov’t in Japan knows nothing about how far their citizens need to move away to stay safe. He says 50 miles should be the minimum distance.

I am horrified/fascinated by the nuclear meltdown chance. Can you imagine Japan becoming a nuclear wasteland. It could happen.
I bet the chances are better than 50/50 right now.

Shall I find and mail you some of those potassium iodide thingys?
(And what a great excuse for eating salt!)

Love the Sharpies. Siber-H: I’ll have to check out “ice blink.” My Dad is too elderly and a little too into dementia to remember the old days so I can’t ask him.

Aw Rio, don’t you like me anymore? I don’t really have anything interesting going on right now–sorry. It is ironic that those of us who suffer from SAD/depression often get worse as more daylight comes into our lives. So I am struggling a bit and probably won’t be posting. It won’t be long when I and the dogs can walk outside and that will help. Everyone take care!

Yo Plunderers! Whats up? We haven’t been able to get anywhere near the ‘puter for days – Mama has been running all over creation, and then the Corgis are such keyboard hogs.
But we aren’t posting to complain about the Corgis…actually we wanted to ask everyone to keep good thoughts for Tupper tomorrow. She went to the vet’s last month cuz Mama was concerned that she was limping. Some of you may remember THAT post – $300 vet bill for nothing. And Tupper still limps. Anyway, the new vet is having her come in for x-rays tomorrow since she just can’t get rid of that limp. She does not seem to be in pain, and she and Gilly run around the back yard like lunatics. Mama rubs her leg and shoulder and checks her pads and everything, and Tupper never says a word. And that lazy little dog hasn’t had to go up or down a flight of stairs on her own snce she started limping – Mama or Dad or even Grampa CARRIES her! Lazy mutt…
No, really she isn’t lazy. Mama is just really worried, and wants her doggie to be ok. We know you guys are all used to us teasing and harrassing all the dogs, but we really do like Tup and Gilly, and we’re kind of worried too.
So anyway – just keep a good thought for her tomorrow that the vet will say its nothing serious and she’ll get better in warm weather.
Thanks all, and we’ll let you know what the vet says later tomorrow.

I don’t want C.Harris to go away either. I don’t know how anyone who lives that far north could escape having SAD/depression. Mom says she would without a doubt experience it. It bothers her that since we went on DST, the sun is rising an hour later. I tell her that she will adjust.

However the person she calls Dad has his computer on but is in the kitchen listening to the radio to find out anything he can about the nuclear accident in Japan. He is all over anything nuclear.

His computer is just sitting here. tee hee. And he stays up way later than Staff. Maybe he will stay away from it long enough for me to talk to Liz. I wonder if she draws Kats? Here lizzy lizzy lizzy. Come to Abbie……
