Congratulations, Hilton!

Here’s Hilton, Chet’s January Friend of the Month, and first friend of the year.

“He looks rather equine,” says Admin. “Just sayin’.”

“Hilton will be in the special place on the right for the month, and as soon as we get an address for Hilton’s human companion (send to spence.quinn@gmail.com), a signed copy of The Sound and the Furry will be winging its way,” Spence says.

“Next month this could be you! Just upload a photo to the friends gallery. They say it’s easy!”

“And Happy New Year, everybody! Your fondness for the Chet and Bernie stories means so much to us.”

Hilton

Welcome new friends Quincy, Splash, Elijah Blue, Murphy, weary celebrant, Buddy & Kaidie & Raider.

Happy New Year to Hilton. I hope we get to know a little about him.

The prayer was beautiful last night. Thank you for your good thoughts.
And when did we get a Checkpoint? THANK YOU!

Bella’s reasoning on Safety mad Zoë and I cry again. This are good tears though. And then Dawson’s. Sniff . . You are Awesome, Dawson.

Doing better today. Still tired. The storm is looking worse. The doc said he would call if I can’t make it in. I think the question is “Will he make it in?”

Happy New Year, all!!!! May 2014 bless all of us with a healing of heart and body.

Mom missed all the posting yesterday. She thinks she did a months worth of work in the 8 hours she spent at her busy place. Then when she got home, she and Dad went over to a friends house to say goodbye to 2013 and hello to 2014. Just a small group of 8…no big party.

Thank you, Amalia and Leonard, for the wonderful prayer. Mom just caught up with all the posts and it was a special day on the blog. Love was evident in all the posts.

Melanie, when 1 door closes, another will open. They will find a way to treat and beat this cancer!! Don’t be shy about leaning on all your friends for support. Believe me, it helps beyond measure.

And always, thank you, SQ, Admin, Chet & Bernie, for this wonderful place to gather.

Love to all this New Years Day.

Mom is watching the Rose Parade…on TV. It is bringing back lots of memories. 1) Grand marshall is Vin Scully the voice of the Dodgers she grew up with, 2) Riding a bus to Pasadena with her folks in the early 60’s and sitting in the grandstands…Disney was Grand Marshall, 3) Camping on the curb o’nite with her Camp Fire group in the late 60’s…freezing and Lee Majors as GM.

Happy New Year. Happy New Day.

We here feel much lighter after releasing the “bad” and the “good” last night. There was lots of Sage smoke spiraling up through the trees as we read each list and sent it on its way. We had just finished the last list when we heard the siren of a fire truck coming up the main road near our street. The Storyteller and I froze and just looked at each other. When the siren went past, we both just fell apart laughing. So know that your lists were “delivered” and the prayer ended with laughter. What could be better than that?

Dawson is keeping track of who pledges to a checkpoint and which checkpoint. We then send a check for the amount we pledged to Snowhook in Alaska.

Still having heavy snow fall here. I was sitting outside and didn’t want to come in. There were 2 fuzzbutts in the tree next to my yard, which needed guarding. Barb had to keep yelling “treat” to get me back in. I was all white on top.

I think the coat looks perfect just the way it is, Macy.

Just to lighten her spirits Barb ordered 5 packets of tomato seeds for varieties she wants for our garden. Her old client and organic farmer, Gary Gauger, is going to grow them for her and then she will get the plants for free. She will take 5 plants, and he can sell the others. Works well for the boat of um, as they say in Chicago.

Well – it is still morning here but I did sleep in after my late night.

Congratulations to Hilton and to Chet and Bernie of Snowhook Kennels!

Checkpoints! As of now Rio and Beau are the owners of Golovin Checkpoint even though I told Wose and Grizzly it was theirs. That was before I refreshed and saw in black and white that Rio had beat out Wose by a nose. Or, as Wose put it, by a pug’s tail.
Anyway, if you guys want to switch it go ahead but I am officially going to stay out of assigning Checkpoints from now on. It only gets me in trouble.
The Safety checkpoint is fully funded. Do you want me to have that donor move some of the donation to another checkpoint? That could happen.
DianeC: You can donate to Snowhook Kennels at the address that SiberH gave. Checks made out to Rebecca or Justin Savidis. Or by Paypal at the Snowhook Kennels Blog. On Chet’s Blog we have three different fundraisers: Checkpoints, Booties (for the dogs feet) and Dog Sponsorship. They all involve letting us know how much you want to donate where and then sending a check or paypal amount to Snowhook Kennels. Basically all the money goes to where Snowhook Kennels needs it most. Dog food, booties, harnesses (Hey, there’s a Have Harness, Will Travel fundraiser too – or is that one over?) and other equipment is purchased with our donations.

  60. Teddy Ruff Rider
    5:10 pm on January 1st, 2014

I realized that I have yet to introduce myself to Diane C. I am Teddy Ruff Rider, a seven month old golden retriever puppy and the prematurely deposed December 2013 Friend of the Month. I live with my mom and dad (and grandpa too, who gives great tummies) in Chevy Chase, MD, in the same house where one the very original Plunderers lived before me, Wookie of Chevy Chase, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge slightly over a year ago.

Wookie was also known as Agent 00Wookie, formerly of her Majesty’s Secret Service, but more recently working under the able command of Commander Rio to perform various missions on behalf of the Plunderers, usually related to extracting information from OFA (our favorite author) about the next upcoming book. He also liked his martinis shaken, not stirred, so as not to bruise the gin, just like that other guy. He drove the Wookiemobile on many of his missions, and provided transport to various events, including taking Rio, SiberH and Wolfie Wigglebutt to a World Series game a couple of years ago. In his spare time he served as quilt tester extraordinaire for my mom, who is also one of the original Plunderers, posting then under the moniker of Debbie LM. (My dad now posts as well as Wookie’s and Teddy’s Dad.) He also supervised all the quilt ladies in my mom’s quilting guild, a near full time job in its own right. As you can tell, he was quite a guy, and I have very big paws to follow in, in order to live up to the wonderful presence he brought to the blog, but I will try my vey best to honor his memory that way.

Our teensy weensie tree is away, along with all of our other decorations, except 3 wreaths. We don’t go for that Jan 6th thing; never did. We were worried about the big snowstorm covering up all of our cords tomorrow.

Taste!… The Giant likes beef jerkey, cookies, candy bars, oranges, burritos ….actually anything that can be handheld while mushing and is very tasty would be a good choice….heh!heh!…So be thinking about what you can make, bake, buy or steal to send to The Giants wife so she can freeze and package it appropriately….chuffle!….Money is also a very good choice as he can choose exactly what he wants with it…chorkel!….We have to keep him healthy and happy while on the Trail…snort!

Rebecca!….Please let us know when it would be a good time to start sending actual food stuffs your way….sniff!….Money can be sent anytime. In light of yesterday’s posting by Spence regarding “The Quilt”, I thought I would provide a guided tour of the quilt to those who may not have been around at the time. The quilt was a collaborative effort by the Plunderers as a group at the time, but spearheaded by Staff (Nancy Drew), who assembled the quilt blocks together and quilted the quilt while recovering from her kidney transplant, assisted by Debbie LM who helped with the design of a number of the individual blocks. Some of the names on the quilt have moved on, either having crossed the bridge or otherwise. There is also an inscription on the back dedicated to Spence expressing our appreciation for the Chet and Bernie series. A series of close up photos of the blocks can be found in a folder in Dishlickers for those who want to see individual blocks more clearly.

At the very top of the quilt:
    Rio at Rockies Stadium
    Chet the Jet Banner
    SiberH

    First Full Row:
    Bluecat
    Wolfie Wigglebutt
    Rio the Evil Pug
    Gus and BooBear
    SiberH (signature)

    Second Full Row:
    Rio (Official Plunderer ID Card)
    Alice Johnson
    Wookie of Chevy Chase
    Abbie the Kitty
    Princess Sam

    Third Full Row:
Buford (a blind dog who lived with Kirby T. Pentworthy)
    Molly, a Black Poodle
    Cosmo
    Macy the Min Pin
    Kirby T. Pentworthy

    Fourth Row:
    Staff
    Alice Johnson
Mollypop (a very fierce poodle indeed)
    Rio (Bed Bug Removal Service)
    Jasper the Poodle

    Fifth Row:
    Plunderer Motto (per B. Stover)
Newf Puppies (last litter from the Pack, on puppy quilts made by Debbie LM)
    Melanie and The Pack
    Maggie (of Barb and Maggie)

    Checkpoint Announcement
The McGrath checkpoint has been fully sponsored by a combination of donations for KirbyTPenworthy and MacyMinPin and will be all inclusive to small dogs. Perhaps Princess Sam and Loulou could ride in the sled. Or maybe just Princess Sam.

Snowbella: We need checkpoints named for Buddy, for Shiek, Leo and the Equines, for Wose and Grizz and possibly for the NativeAmericanVeterans/Navajo CodeTalkers although I thought Amalia and Leonard may want to choose the last one. The last two are fully funded and the first two are still open for donations.

I am having a lazy day. Been reading a V.I. Warshawski novel by Sara Paretsky, a series about a strong, 40-ish detective who shares a dog with a protective elderly neighbor. I like the writing and will get more of her books from the library.

We need to research the highest calorie foods for the Giant on the trail. I seem to recall that many years ago one of those ultra marathon swimmers swam the Bering Strait. I remember reading that she was fed something that was like 1,000 calories a tablespoon. Sounds impossible but I know she needed something very high in calories not only for the swim but to keep her body temperature up in the cold water. We need to find out more so that the Giant doesn’t lose the pounds he loses each year on the trail.

Diane, let us explain in case macy is not looking at the blog at the moment. One of the iditarod race’s fundraisere is to auction off a seat in each musher’s sled for the ceremonial start thru Anchorage. It is 11 miles, and WOW! Wouldn’t we love it if Mom was on that sled with SJ and our beloved Snowhook team. Problem is that this auction usually goes pretty high, and it would cost funds we would rather put into Snowhook’s pocket. But if any of our fellow Plunderers is able to bid and win the ride as AJ’s “Iditarider”, that would indeed be cool?

I looked online and a lot of places are willing to sell ‘wholesale’ 48 packs of snickers. This is one of the better prices. Snickers Candy Bar, 2.07-Ounce Bars (Pack of 48)$35.49 with free shipping.

Diane – the history of our connection with the Iditarod and Snowhook Kennel:

A few years ago two of our Plunderers, Siber-H and Melanie, were again watching their favorite dog sled race, the Iditarod. They chatted about it a little on the blog but most of us didn’t know anything about the race.
Then, a dog from a certain team escaped during a rest stop. This happens now and then, and the musher may take the time to look for the dog, or may ask other people to do so. But this particular musher, now known to us all as AJ of Snowhook, akaThe Giant, not only stopped his race to find his wandering Whitety-Lance, but then instead of giving up and going on without him, forfeited the race in order to stay in the area, searching for his white and grey dog, in a white and grey landscape. This was hen Siber asked all of us on n the blog to say a prayer for the lost dog, and praised the loyalty of AJ who gave up his substantial entry fee and all the other money that goes into the race in order to find Whitey-Lance. There was a happy ending when he did find W-L, safe and sound and made it home with him, even though they had to scratch from the race.
Needless to say, all of us here on the blog fell in love with this great hearted man and knew we had found a kindred soul.
Rebecca of Snowhook was at home, waiting for word of both her husband and her dog, and she answered emails that offered prayers, and then the ones that came in celebrating the happy rescue. Rebecca was invited to post on the blog, and she became a regular Plunderer.
The next year, the Plunderers were educated about what it takes to run the Iditarod, not only in preparations but in finances. We do all we can to help support this small, and humane kennel to help Rebecca and AJ follow their dream of racing. We love them for all they do for their dogs, and for all the dogs they have rescued over the years, and for the delightful people they are. So, we hold auctions and boutiques online with items donated by the Plunderers and every penny goes to Snowhook to support the dogs. We also have fund drives called “Shake Your Bootie” to supply the necessary boots for the dogs in the race, plus a “Feed the Giant” fund to supply AJ with high calorie, high sugar, and good nutrition snacks – like Snickers bars. There are opportunities to donate to the checkpoints along the race trail where mushers and dogs rest, and to sponsor particular dogs in the team (we all seem to attach ourselves to particular favorites)
Come Iditarod time, there are two starts to the race. The first is the Ceremonial Start which is a short, 11 mile run through Anchorage to celebrate this Last Great Race on Earth. At that time, the Iditarod Committee auctions off the chance to ride in the sled with your favorite musher – this is a big fund raiser for the race committee, and IditaRiders pay literally thousands of dollars to participate in this Ceremonial Start.
The next day is the real start of the official 1000 mile race across Alaska. At this point, it is just the mushers, and their dogs, and the prayers of all their supporters. And that’s where the Plunderers come in again. Many will travel to Alaska to be at the starting line with Rebecca to send AJ off. And all of us will be glued to our computers for the next 7 to 10 days, following the GPS tracking of our team, keeping up with the reports from the rest areas, and cheering AJ and the puppies on.
These Plunderers – these marvelous people who have connected through Chet the Dog, and this blog – these are some of the most generous and great hearted people you will ever meet. And we are glad that you and any other new bloggers and lurkers have joined us.

DianeC. The money bid by the riders to go that 11 miles with a musher and team goes to help support the Iditarod Race and not the individual musher and his team. Yes, The Iditarod Race always needs money, but we choose to support Snowhook instead. Some of us do support the Iditarod Race by becoming Iditarod Insiders and paying our yearly membership to them.

Not to worry, a few years ago all the Plunderers (except me and I believe, Melanie and the Howlers) were new to the Iditarod Race. They are experienced Iditarod fans now. It didn’t take them long to learn.

The first rule if being a super spy that the thieves told me was to trust no one unless they smell like Slim Jims. They said they learned this at the curly tail of Commander Rio. I know that being a commander comes with the stress of divulging too many secrets like am I more pug than sled dog. I also know that a certain evil pug has a heart of gold. I also also know that Snowhook is public so all youse can find out all about us at your willy nilly. What I don’t know is what eyebrows are. This troubles me because my Lady says they are one of my best features.

Diane: For the record, I am not Snowhook’s infamous wanderer. That was before I was a wag in anyone’s tail. Said wander is a fellow by the name of Whitey-Lance. He helps coach the team and is sweet on Princess Sam. He also known as one of the best huggers in the kennel. He is not part pug and as far as I am aware, does not have eyebrows whatever they are.

I put a box of jello and a can of fruit salad out on the counter this afternoon. No action so far.

Seeing as it is very cold here I have been making luminaries like mad. I made 3 overnight. They almost became too frozen in only 16 hours. I am working on another set of 3 right now.
This afternoon, in only 6 hours, I made a round luminary. It isn’t really thick. Only about a half inch. It is working fine although I don’t expect it to last a long time. And the plus is that I can carry it around easily! Heh.

It really is perfect luminary weather. I am catching up with Dawson even though two of my round luminaries melted in that heat wave last week. They not only melted into non spheres but then they refroze into the metal they are seated on. I will have to bring them into the house to melt them off of the bases so I can put new luminaries on them. An artists work is never done.
