Congratulations Cruizer!
The random number generator has spoken (in a heavy East German accent, circa 1956) and it said: “Cruizer.” Congratulations, Cruizer, Chet’s Friend of the Month for October!
Cruizer will be in the special place where Maddie and Ranger have been, and as soon as we get a mailing address from Cruizer’s human companion (send to spence.quinn@gmail.com) a signed and paw-printed copy of The Sound and the Furry will be on its way.
“Next month,” says Admin, “this could be you! Just send in a photo to the Friends of Chet gallery. The random number generator does the rest in its random and lovably Teutonic way!”
Welcome new friends Ginger, Chico, Teddy Rough Rider, Cheyenne, Shiloh, dreaming dude (possibly of cats).

MAD Monday. snicker . . Thanks for all the pictures, good thoughts and prayers. I will be reading everything again because my brain is not hooked in to my body.
Taking a rest day for REAL.

T&G, must be another furnance day if youse guys are up this early. I appreciated the ride yesterday. Without the two of youse your mom might have gotten lost.

Melanie – at least YOU appreciate the necessity of Corgi Navigators. For some reason, Mama seems to think she can drive anywhere without us helping.
Yes, it is Furnace Installation – Day 2. We now are without heat AND hot water. Until Thursday! Good think we happen to like stinky humans.
And Mama says that since we can’t do dishes, she really can’t cook dinner tonight or tomorrow. She is just devastated. tee hee.
9:19 am on October 1st, 2013
Greetings!
HRH, B: Another Google Doodle to look at.
Melanie: Strong good thoughts coming at ‘ya from Westchester. I know that your in good paws with the Smoochers at your side, and the pack to supervise.
T&G: When will royalty get recognized as FOM?
Poor, Macy. Tampa Bay did in Texas.

Good morning!
Congratulations Cruizer. Don’t be a stranger to this blog.
Melanie, Good to hear from you. Take it easy, and enjoy the great weather.
9:41 am on October 1st, 2013
I can’t get the song from Breaking Bad, Badfinger’s Baby Blue, out of my head. I downloaded it to add to my iphone collection and according to USA Today, I was one of 500,000 to do that since Sunday night.
9:46 am on October 1st, 2013
MPM: one of 500,000 does that make you feel special or what?
9:52 am on October 1st, 2013
P.S. MPM:Hard waiting to see ya’ll in AK in March
9:59 am on October 1st, 2013
HOH, I’d like to have a piece of that action. The original song was $.99 and the remastered that I bought was $1.29. That’s well over a half million dollars.
Actually, I’d feel more special if I was the FOM.
10:10 am on October 1st, 2013
This is it!!!! October 1, GRAND OPENING of Rick’s Knife Shop. Shop early, shop often. He can special order just about anything your heart desires, NOT just knives. If he doesn’t get to ship something soon, we might just have to sedate him. He really doesn’t want to mess with me now that we have hundreds of knives in the house!
10:18 am on October 1st, 2013
Good morning all.
Nice to hear from you Melanie. Relax and do whatever you like today.
Amalia, take advantage of the days off from kitchen duties.
Congrats to Cruizer, a good looking Bernie.
Barb is taking me to the v*e*t later today. Remember the little Boxer pup that our neighbor’s sister got from the puppy broker? Well, he had a cough, and now Fred has been really sick, with a cough and now has stopped eating and coughing up a white foam. Kennel cough for sure. Yesterday I started coughing and hacking so Barb called the doc right away. Usually kennel cough clears up on its own, but not taking any chances here. Fred is going in today too. This is another good reason NOT TO GET A PUPPY MILL PUPPY!!!
10:28 am on October 1st, 2013
Oh, Mags, you get well, RIGHT NOW. No puppy mill bug for you. Hope Fred is ok.
10:35 am on October 1st, 2013
Oh dear Maggie – paws crossed for you to be well REAL quick.
Macy’s Mom – we are going to go look at sharp, cutting implements. Nice business card.
10:46 am on October 1st, 2013
Maggie: Hope you will be feeling tip-top soon.
MPM: I love that song! Paul McCartney wrote their first hit song for them.
Congratulations, Cruizer!
10:56 am on October 1st, 2013
Macy – we like the web site and have just found the perfect Christmas gift for Gramp. Is paypal the only way to pay for things?
11:02 am on October 1st, 2013
T and G, no, we also take credit cards, and for extremely special people, checks. Ooo, you could be the very first customer!
11:58 am on October 1st, 2013
Macy, check your SDD and ignore my message.
12:41 pm on October 1st, 2013
Congratulations Cruizer!
Melanie, Good to hear from you but REST.
Barb and Maggie, Let us know what the vet said. My mom would do the same thing Barb is doing…off to the vet even though you are pretty certain it is kennel cough. The next time these pople get a dog I hope they do some research on how to adopt a dog and how to avoid puppy mills.
Macy, We will look at your dad’s website when we have more time. This sounds way cool. That is a catchy business card.
1:29 pm on October 1st, 2013
When we were in the show dog world, all of The Pack were inoculated against everything we could think of, including Kennel Cough.
I got clean today! Woo Hoo! Now I’m exhausted. Zoe and I read over everything from yesterday’s blog. We teared up and we laughed. Isn’t that how it is supposed to be?
Crusier, you look like a shot gun seat dog!
Macy, tell your mom I was able to look at your dad’s website. Something has caught my eye, but I’m to tired to think right now.
Going to catch some zzzzz
1:40 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy – we did it! We got Gramp a great Christmas present! Tell Rick his website is very well designed.
1:45 pm on October 1st, 2013
AND – we picked out paint for the house.
The color is called “FireDance” – a soft, red-clay color.
The trim will be Georgian PinkBeige – which is actually a cream tan
And the shutters and doors will be Buckland Blue – a more blue than grey slate color
And the solar panels will be going on the roof soon too.
The (stodgy, gossipy, bland) neighborhood will be scandalized.
Good!
1:54 pm on October 1st, 2013
Does anyone have an iPaw MIni? We are inches away from an iPAW!!!
1:56 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy, Mom checked out your website. Neat! It made her want something even though she isn’t into knives. Sign of good marketing!
BooBear
2:11 pm on October 1st, 2013
BooBear – did you see the Lone Star Ukulele? You could get that and join in the next jam session with Rio on the harmonica and Masquers on sax. Siber might even jump in and shake his tambourine.
2:16 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy: No 2 son is a Fishing Fanatic! We see Christmas Presents well in paw.
2:30 pm on October 1st, 2013
Another Option: the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8-Inch 16 GB Tablet…combo phone and tablet (phablet)
2:34 pm on October 1st, 2013
Royals: KatDog is still on duty with the Smoochers, but could blurr-by for a jam session with BooBear, Riö and Siber. Redbone might even join in ^..^
2:43 pm on October 1st, 2013
Google Doodle (thank you Rose): 123rd anniversary of Yosemite National Park…and today it’s closed….
Thank you Melanie. I love being a Prof…retired!
I have to check out Macy’s site.
2:50 pm on October 1st, 2013
We will let you know what I have as soon as we get back later this afternoon. Appt. at 3:30 our time.
The puppy broker lady was sneaky – she had an ad on the internet for Boxer pups, and just stated “I have 3 left, 2 females and 1 male”. Neighbor’s sister didn’t find out till she got there that she did not own either parent, and had 2 Lab pups a 1 Sibe pup who “belonged to breeder friends that she was helping out”. Yea, right! We found her FB page later and found that there was a stream of pups going thru there. Bee-ache!
This is what these scumbags do to unsuspecting people.

Tupper&Gilly: We Love your Mama’s FireDance paint choice!
2:53 pm on October 1st, 2013
Maggie: We are so Relieved Barb is taking you to the V*E*T today!
I know you will be okay, but please check-in as soon as you return.
Your Friend – Bear
3:09 pm on October 1st, 2013
Thank you Bear. Will do!
We love the colors for T & G’s house, too. Who says all houses have to be white with black shutters? Is there any way to post a before and after picture for us?
When Barb did her farm house in yellow, one of the neighbors out there said “Well, its nice but I could have done without the yellow”. Barb asked him what color he thought would have been a better choice, and he said beige. Typical guy!
3:12 pm on October 1st, 2013
I love my iPaw mini. Zoë and YSAS each have one and love them.
BearSpiritDog, OTAS is also a fisherperson! I have seen one or two things for him, but I need to email about what would be best for the type of fishing he does.
I also like the pink flashlights. My sister had to deal with breast cancer. She may be getting a pink flashlight.
I have discovered as the day goes on the computer has too many buttons and links to push.
3:13 pm on October 1st, 2013
MagPie, may your visit be quick, painless and productive.
3:20 pm on October 1st, 2013
Maggie, Hope hou get hour cough fixed, and fast.
We think that woman is awful, but puppy buyers need to take responsibility to research as well. Of course, most learn the hard way.
T&G, those colors sound lovely. We want to see the pictures when it is done.
3:21 pm on October 1st, 2013
Thank you all for your pawsitive comments on dad’s site. I know that having to go to work on his first day of his “store” drove him crazy, but he will be home in a little over an hour.
We were saving the bulk of TSATF for today when mom had to wait for the cable guy for Holly and Biddie’s new place. He was there before she got there, so no waiting was involved. How often does that happen. Anyhoo, no waiting, no reading, so now she is home in her nice chair about to go on a reading frenzy.
BBL
And how, you ask, did a ukulele wind up on a knife site? No idea!
But I did think of jam sessions when I saw it.
3:22 pm on October 1st, 2013
Melanie: Thank You for the (mini) iPAW info! It is much appreciated!
3:36 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy: The site is wonderful.
3:59 pm on October 1st, 2013
T&G, Royal colors for the Royal Family. Before and after pictures would be fun!
4:06 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy: Love the “Proud Firefighter Retired” notation on your pop’s website!
I have a feeling he will be getting more than a few orders from the plunderers. Heh.
4:06 pm on October 1st, 2013
Oleys, we agree about the buyers having responsibility, but to say this woman was an uneducated buyer is an understatement. Clueless is more like it! After going there and seeing these different breeds of pups, she still had no idea what was going on.
Will check out Macy’s dad’s site later.
Now, off to the V*E*T.
4:39 pm on October 1st, 2013
Well, there has been a little bit of an edit to the house colors. We (thank dog) got a sample of “Fire Dance” to pain a larger swatch of the house to verify the color.
Oh my!
Our house would have looked like a giant pumpkin. The stodgy neighbors would have had a fit and fallen into it.Even we had to admit it was waaaaaayyyyy too orange.
We went back to the paint store and got a sample can of “Copper Clay”. It is a warm, earthy, browner clay color that still looks wonderful with the other colors.
We have the before picture complete with out of control butterfly bush and other shrubs. We will post both once the house is painted.
5:15 pm on October 1st, 2013
tandg, we know all about colors not being what you think, which accounts for our living room being almost pink. Mom should have taken a hint from “cinnamon” in the name.
Dod, *dear old dad* is home and happily looking at his orders. Mom and I will be doing the packing as soon as he digs out the merch from his room of doom upstairs. Mom won’t even go in there it is such a mess right now. Since Angie is moving out we can put the “back room” in the front room, where mom might be able to find something.
5:23 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy: love the site but it is too hard to shop on my little iPhone. I’ll look at it when my computer is fixed. I will also post the link on my FB page to help spread the word
T&G: I painted my Mom’s old Spanish house a few years after she died. I did a lot of research and showed the family what I was going to do. There were three separate areas to paint on the terraced hillside: garage & retaining wall, house and guest cottage.I had to scrape the stucco, bleach clean it, prime and apply two coats–by hand. It took a month and I ended up with severe tendonitis. One neighbor said it was “interesting.” My sister visited the following month and the complained to her. She said she liked it but it was more Mexican colors than Spanish. She hied a professional painter to re-paint it “since the neighbors have to look at it everyday.

CHobbit – sheesh. Some siblings are just never satisfied. (NOT talking about Staff and Dawson!)
5:56 pm on October 1st, 2013
Wow, chobbit, I would me major p!$$ed!
6:02 pm on October 1st, 2013
Here is a handy reference I just ran across. Bee, is it correct?
Q: I’ve been writing for a long time and always assumed which and that were interchangeable, but I’ve recently been told that isn’t the case. How do I make sure I’m using the right word? —Anonymous
The battle over whether to use which or that is one many people struggle to get right.
Here it is:
If the sentence doesn’t need the clause that the word in question is connecting, use which. If it does, use that. Let me explain with a couple of examples.
Our office, which has two lunchrooms, is located in Cincinnati.
Our office that has two lunchrooms is located in Cincinnati.
These sentences are not the same. The first sentence tells us that you have just one office, and it’s located in Cincinnati. The clause which has two lunchrooms gives us additional information, but it doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence. Remove the clause and the location of our one office would still be clear: Our office is located in Cincinnati.
The second sentence suggests that we have multiple offices, but the office with two lunchrooms is located in Cincinnati. The phrase that has two lunchrooms is known as a restrictive clause because another part of the sentence (our office) depends on it. You can’t remove that clause without changing the meaning of the sentence.
Let’s look at another example:
The time machine, which looked like a telephone booth, concerned Bill and Ted.
The time machine that looked like a telephone booth concerned Bill and Ted.
In the first sentence (thanks to the use of which), the time machine concerned Bill and Ted. It also happened to look like a telephone booth. In the second sentence (which uses the restrictive clause), Bill and Ted are concerned with the time machine that looks like a telephone booth.

Congratulations to Cruizer, a big Chet fan like the rest of us.
Teddy Rough Rider was only seven spots away from Cruizer on FOC. So close but no cigar.
MacyMinPin: Tell your Dad he has a very nice website. I want a mini Mag light and one of the knives Grampa used to have and a ukelele and, and, and…the prices are great!
Melanie: Hope you really did manage to get some rest today.
Melanie and Barb&Maggie: Hope that coughing stops soon.
T&G: I’m glad you double checked the color.
CHobbit: She who does the painting, picks the colors. I cannot imagine painting over my sisters colors (of course, she is way more artistically inclined than I am), especially if I had to pay a professional. Frugal, I am.
6:15 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy: Oh, My….Which or That…Too late in the day to say.
6:25 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy: “That” is restrictive. Here is are the examples I always use:
The taxes that are due will be paid. (Some of the taxes are NOT due and will NOT be paid. Only those that are due will be paid.)
The taxes, which are due, will be paid. (All of the taxes are due and all will be paid.)
6:27 pm on October 1st, 2013
Back from the v*e*t and it is definitely kennel cough. Barb got some meds from the doc and then she sent her to Wallyland for the cough medicine. $100 poorer, but I am already starting on the antibiotic and should be better in a day or two. The vet checked my lungs and said they are fine, but after pulling on my leash on the way into the office, I was able to give them some really good coughs. Always aim to please.
C. Hobbit, Barb swears that your sister and hers are two peas in a pod. That was very hurtful to have the house repainted after all your work.
Good thing you double checked on the paint, T & G. Sometimes the names or the little swatches are not enough to tell if you will like it. On interiors we always say pick the color you like and go one shade lighter, as colors intensify when a whole room is painted.
6:38 pm on October 1st, 2013
Macy, We just investigated your dad’s website. It is a very easy to use website and very nice looking. I love the Texas ukulele.
Those are good prices on the items for sale. We are thinking about what we want to buy…mom has a thing for flashlights.
6:44 pm on October 1st, 2013
Maggie, I am glad you will be better soon, but I wish we could give that puppy broker kennel cough.
6:49 pm on October 1st, 2013
Kennel cough is very contagious. I wouldn’t be able to go to Jacqueline’s to get sheered like a sheep if I didn’t have the shot.
7:00 pm on October 1st, 2013
I get the up the nose kennel cough vaccine because of going to the dog park.
7:23 pm on October 1st, 2013
FOM!…Bah Humbug!…spit!
7:29 pm on October 1st, 2013
If anyone runs across an item they want that we don’t show, give a shout, we can probably get it for you. DOD came home, looked at his site for just a minute and flopped out on the bed. Apparently the excitement was too much for him. Two hours later, he is still snoring. Get up, we have orders to ship!
7:45 pm on October 1st, 2013
Thank Dog! It’s late enough so I can head upstairs. Whew.
I might check in later.
If not here is my goodnight to you all . .

I just discovered that if you do a search for “Macy the min-pin” you get all kinds of chet posts, plus an unrelated Macy the min-pin up for adoption! Who knew?
8:04 pm on October 1st, 2013
We would like to give the puppy broker more than kennel cough! A pox on her!
Has anyone heard any more about Ann Hillerman’s new book?
8:10 pm on October 1st, 2013
Pop is now salivating over the gadgets on macy’s dad’s website.
Barb, Mom and Pop are now putting up a flexible 7-foot deer fence for the chickies’ addendum/ airlock/vestibule. They have a 4-foot one, but they don’t think it is very safe. heh heh! The Black Australorp accidentally flew out of that one evening last week. We didn’t see it right away. Just when Meashka noticed, pop was getting her back in. Carpola!
8:19 pm on October 1st, 2013
Melanie: OMD. How’d they do that?!
Meashka: Curses. Foiled again!
Following the River Bears up the stairs.
G’night all – Bear
8:20 pm on October 1st, 2013
Black Australorp?
What the….???
8:34 pm on October 1st, 2013
Barb, Anne Hillerman’s book is released today. I would guess your library will have it. Here in NM a person might have to get on the list and wait a year to borrow it from the library.
Mom thinks the publisher of this book is asking too much for the Kindle version. It is smaller and more expensive than Stephen King’s new book.
8:37 pm on October 1st, 2013
Australorp!…snort!…Is that a black pug pretending to be a chicken?…sniff!…Never heard of it before…heh!
8:46 pm on October 1st, 2013
Barb, The book already has 3 five star reviews on Amazon. However, I am always suspicious of the first reviews because they may be friends of the author or publisher.
9:09 pm on October 1st, 2013
My bad luck continues. The computer store called and they have to erase my hard drive. I had taken a computer class in May and it was suggested that we turn on “fire vault” to encrypt and protect our machines. Now that there is a problem the encryption is preventing access to the operating system. So when I get my laptop back, all my files, purchased software, etc will be gone. And I have no physical backup. My computer discs are dated and somewhere in my Anchorage house. Although I had everything upgraded at this store in April, they can’t reinstall the programs and the upgrades.
9:10 pm on October 1st, 2013
Looks like it might be a good book, Siber.
Black Australop, we actually had two! Very nice hens.
9:33 pm on October 1st, 2013
Day!…What a day. A good day, but a busy day…sniff!…My friend says I should tell CHobbit that she did indeed get all the contents of the box that was addressed to dawg-knows-where…heh!heh!…She says she will be in contact with you about the tree in question…snort!…Is this a tree Beau and I should know about?….hmmmm.
9:42 pm on October 1st, 2013
Oh, Carol, that is terrible! What can you do?
On that note, we are saying goodnight and sweet dreams all.
9:45 pm on October 1st, 2013
CHobbit!…Why are you having such a string of bad luck involving large sums of money?…sniff!… You are nothing but generous and sincerely nice to everyone… grunt!…I hope all my bad pug-karma is not attaching itself to you instead of me somehow…wheeze!…What a thought!
10:44 pm on October 1st, 2013
Rio: tree? What tree is this that thou mentions? I don’t remember a tree but my brain like my computer is fried. Going to go watch NCISat a friend’s house since my tv is gone. Spent much of the day cleaning
10:48 pm on October 1st, 2013
I am reading a new book by Linda Ronstadt called Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir. It brings back a lot of memories of good music from the 1970s/80s. She had a stellar career. This book helps explain her beautiful voice and phrasing.
10:50 pm on October 1st, 2013
CHobbit!…heh!…My friend says she is very relieved that you have totally forgotten about The Tree…heh!…As it looks very complicated with totally different techniques as she is used to…sniff!

Our DSL box took a nose dive on Saturday evening, and we are finally up and running.
Melanie, I am glad to hear that your biopsy was not too dreadful. Lke everyone, I am anxious to hear the results.
CHobbit, sorry to hear about the computer.
Macy, mom will be doing some shopping soon!
1:22 am on October 2nd, 2013
Btw, I just finished Dogtripping and loved it!
I can’t wait until everyone has finished reading The Book so that we can discuss it. We thought it was wonderful!
1:46 am on October 2nd, 2013
Wolfie, we would love to discuss Dogtripping! Mom thinks that the people on the trip were Rosenfelt’s plunderers. A lot of work, but I bet it was fun too. And all those senior dogs who got a great home to live out their days. sniff
