Congratulations, Correction, Follow-Up

“First,” Spence says, “congratulations to Snowhook for their great 5th place finish in the Northern Lights 300.”

“Second,” says Admin, “a correction. We messed up yesterday regarding the redoubtable Whitey-Lance – he wasn’t on the team yesterday.”

“But Marco – Whitey-Lance’s son – was,” says Spence. “At least until Justin noticed his wrist might be bothering him and sidelined him for the duration of the race. Here’s a post-race story about Marco from Rebecca. Kind of reminds me of someone we know.”

We waited for the call to tell us Marco, the second of Snowhook’s dropped dogs and son of Whitey-Lance was ready to be picked up after being flown to Willow from the checkpoint where he was dropped.  Marco displayed the signs of a sore wrist on the the trail, and taking no chances, AJ dropped him as soon as possible.

As we dozed off and on throughout the day, both AJ and I trying to catch up on some much needed sleep, we received a call Sunday afternoon.  It wasn’t the call we were expecting.  Instead, we were told Marco was loose on the run way and asked if we could go to to airport to help catch him.  We donned our cold weather gear, fired up the dog truck and headed for the small airport.
When the volunteers opened the door to the plane, Marco jumped out and over the head of the volunteer, and channeling his father, Snowhook’s infamous wanderer decided to go on a walkabout, running free on the straightaway the runway provided.  When we arrived, he was zigging, zagging and ran into the trees, past a volunteer and sped down a trail.   We followed him in the dog truck.  Now, away from strangers trying to catch him, we parked the dog truck, got out, called his name and he ran straight into AJ’s arms.  After loading our pup in the dog truck, we thanked the volunteers who tried to help and were nervous with worry, and finally headed home.  Marco is a good boy and will make a full recovery.
Marco:
Welcome BJ, Bear, resting buddy.

OMD! A chip off the old block. And we thought W-L coached the teammembers to stay with the team. Well, we think that is what Marco was trying to do. After AJ dropped him, he was just going back to look for his team on the trail. Thank Dog he came when AJ called.

Yesterday we watched the PBS series The Abolitionists. It is very good and we realized that even when the rents were in school, it was not taught this way.

Top of the Morning to youse O’Howlers!

The apple never falls from the fruit of the looms! Marco wrist must not have been to sore to elude his many would-be rescuers.

Belle Starr, seems to me that if Marco was loose on a plane runway, that is a lot more serious than you jumping out of the trees on your own property.

We were thinking the same thing as Rose. Wrist must not have been too sore if he felt up to a lengthy walkabout, or in this case, a runabout. Glad there was a happy ending to that tale.

Marco does remind me of Chet and I think he feels the same about plane rides as I do.

Good job Snowhook, in both race and rescue!

    Good morning all.

Was Marco channeling his dad or his namesake? Not sure the Chief Naming Officer should have named a son of Whitey-Lance after an explorer!

Whitey-Lance has found a new calling. He is an excelllent news reporter for Snowhook.

Marco! Way to go, bud. First you channel your inner Chet and leap over the volunteer’s head, then you pull a Whitey-Lance and do a run-about. Chet and Whitey-Lance are a redoubtable team but in the end it is best to listen to AJ. Good boy!
Now I have to check out the new friends of Chet.
Hope all those who are under the weather start feeling tip-top soon.

Marco–already a legend amongst race volunteers.

Crap, it was supposed to warm up today and instead it is -51 with super thick ice fog.

  16. Junior

What a race, what a race? Truth be told, racing is very similar to what we do everyday with some exceptions.

There is a starting line and a finish line—whatever those are—and neither begin and end at our kennel. The Giant makes sure we follow certain trail markers. I’ve camped before on training runs with the team, but we camped next to other dogs at checkpoints. That’s another thing that is different, these things called checkpoints. Some checkpoints we blow through and others we stay and rest, only leaving when someone with a watch and clipboard says we can leave.

I’m still worried I didn’t do my race correctly. Word is Quigley brought his toolbox on the race. I didn’t know I was supposed to bring a hammer. Is it supposed to be like the hammer of Thor or the Giant’s hammer my Lady decorated with sparkly stickers and ribbons? Maybe Belle Starr was right about how to prepare for the race. I feel like such a rookie.

CHobbit: What is ice fog? Sounds scary.

It’s time for my Lunch. See youse later.

  19. c.hobbit

Masquers: Ice fog is basically frozen fog. It is “a fog composed of minute ice crystals that form in the air in extremely cold temperatures.” It is just very hard to see any distance at all–just a few feet. Fortunately, I don’t have to be anywhere today.

And where I am ice fog is mixed with wood smoke from people heating their homes. The cold air forms an inversion layer over our area so smoke can’t disperse = very unhealthy air.

  20. Masquers
    2:26 pm on January 28th, 2013

CHobbit: For some reason I’m having a hard time getting my mind around the unfamiliar concept of ice fog. Is it similar to snow, but in the form of ice crystals, or does it feel like a thick soupy mix? At over 50 below, one can only imagine. Maybe one has to be there to understand.

It is -51 by C hobbit, and they are saying it will be +65 degrees here tomorrow, with about 2″ to 2 1/2″ of rain. 67 degrees is an all time record high, so we may beat that. The weather people say 1″ of rain = 10″ of snow, so if we had normal weather for Illinois we could have 2 feet of snow! Crazy I tell ya!

We are hoping to get an update from Wolfie today.

After today we will be off the grid till about Friday or Saturday. Kelly knows that Bee will check with her for a medical report.

I’ve looked in the straw in my house and when the Giant put fresh straw in yesterday, I had to start all over again. I’ve checked my dog dish, my belly, my tail. Nothing. Re: leaving the radio on….Five years ago I got two parakeets as a first time bird owner. I was told that in nature silence means danger to birds so to leave music on. I was also told that individual birds have definite tastes in music. So over a period of several days I tried different stations without any response from the birds. Then I played country music and they sang their hearts out. Five years later I instruct any house sitters to leave the radio on during the day and that if they don’t like country music, that is too bad.

My Mama says she is forever grateful for all the assistance, support and use of equipment they gave to AJ. The year after, AJ blew through the McGrath checkpoint, and Abe, the trapper not the brother, hopped on his snowmachine and followed the team to the next checkpoint where they were taking their 24 just to say, ‘hi.’ Last year Abe, trapper not the brother, provided AJ tools to help repair his sled after it was damaged in the burn.

Rio, we agree that was confusing. But we think that Marco has a brother named Abe, and the two legged Abe helped out AJ. Abe the four legged was named for him. What do we win for figuring that out?

Rio: There is only one Trapper Abe and the other Abe is my brother. He is a dog, like me. My brother can’t drive a snowmachine, and like, Junior, he doesn’t have a toolbox. Howlers: I’m not familiar with this term, wanderlust. Does it mean the ability to stay put, and do as you’re told? If so, the answer is no. My mama thinks if you google the term, my photo comes up in the image section. My Mama says we Alaskan huskies have a pack mentality. She recalls a time when during play time several dogs were free running in the kennel and Bridger’s inner wanderlust kicked in and he took off down the trail. Being a lead dog, several dogs decided to follow him. AJ took off after them on the four-wheeler. When he found them, another musher had stopped the team and was busy loading them in his truck knowing that they belonged to someone nearby. The other musher said the dogs were running in perfect formation, side by side in twos as if they were on the line.

Just popping in to add all of our best wishes and good thoughts to Barb. Mama and Dad did a special prayer for you tonight. And they did a part for Maggie too so that her “2 days” fly by.

Well we had an exciting time tonight. I was in the kitchen making dinner when I heard a loud thud. Dad. In the bathroom. Sigh. Big bruise on the back of his head, scrape on his right arm and leg and by his right cheekbone and a cut on his lip.

Called 911 (Did not try to get him up and he was in too small a place to get up by himself) He got a ride to the Emergency room and some attention and is now home. We were only there 2-1/2 hours. A new record. When we went with Maggie it was always 6 hours and a room in the morning. Tried to call the Turtleman or his wife but they were both not available. I only got their voice mail. Hopefully they don’t get their messages at 2 a.m. and call.

I brought Dad home and I gave him a Reuben sandwich which is what Mr.Staff had earlier. He is still in the kitchen eating.

The Turtleman just called so I no longer have to worry about that. I am looking forward to bed.
