Congrats to Shadow, our new FOM.

Hope all of our eastern friends are warm and toasty this morning. Glad the electric is back on. Were you able to have Trick or Treaters last night? Heard that some communities postponed it due to power outages.

Morning everyone – We are among the lucky ones – there are still over 30o thousand without power. Our phones, internet and tv just came back about 10 minutes ago, but many places with power are still without those also.
And the CL is in CLL, upset because her opening person didn’t show up, and can’t be reached by phone – duh!!! She lives in an area very hard hit and still without power. She and her family are hopefully in a shelter somewhere, and all CL can talk about is her own “need” to get to her grandchild babysitting in Vermont. Yikes – talk about clueless!!!
    oh well
    Happy 11-1-11 to all

Rio, Looks like you have more snow coming! We have our last tomatoes sitting on the window sill, and snow not far away. Amazing! Still have lots of beets, some spinace and arugula in the garden to enjoy.
With all the stuff you can buy that will make you sick (when you think you are eating healthy), we are trying to avoid buying for as long as possible. A friend in St. Louis just eneded up in the hospital last week with eboli (sp?) I think there were about 3 doz. cases.
The Dept of Infectious Disease called him Sunday night for an hour-long interview. He and his wife were supposed to try to remember everything they had eaten for the previous 10 days! Not easy to do.

In our report this morning, we meant to say an outbreak of e coli, not eboli.

Does anyone else feel heartbroken that Kim Kardasian is getting a divorce 72 days after her $10 mil. wedding? Those people are a JOKE! At lease she put a little money back into our hurting economy. Whick incidently, fell even further today!

Just talked to(delightful, 10 yr. old, Grand, Lily. She is studying seeds in her science class, and the teacher was quite impressed when she told her she had her own garden this summer. She was able to identify several seeds, and told the teacher she had harvested some bean seeds to grow next year. She asked Barb, “Do you know the difference between a monocot and a dicot”… She does!

  26. Barb & Maggie
    3:38 pm on November 1st, 2011

Siber, Some people are actually speculating that the Kardasian wedding was just a publicity stunt. I don’t think so. I think she is just a spoiled rotten young woman who is way too full of herself, and probably doesn’t know how to behave off camera. She said “”After careful consideration I have decided to end my marriage”. Maybe the careful consideration should have been before she said I do. Guess her husband didn’t even know she was filing!

Waiting for Bee to say “Who is Kim Kardasian?”

Barb&Magpie: Lily knows more than we do about gardening! (more than a lot of folks we imagine) When Nana was a girl, the family lived away from the city and had a huge garden which she had to help weed. Pulling weeds in the hot sun.. not a pleasant memory for her. Later, after she went away to college, it was downsized.. too late for her to enjoy.

Is anyone watching Once Upon a Time? The pilot aired on ABC on Sunday, Oct. 23rd. Kind of a fantasy meets reality type of show. We like it so far. Seems strange to go from Breaking Bad and Damages to this. lol

    Who is Kim Kardasian?

  29. Barb & Maggie
    3:52 pm on November 1st, 2011

BSD, We were considering watching it, but think it interferred with the last Case Histories on PBS. The series was good, but the stories did differ from the books. Also it seems that the British shows are darker, and that is hard to get used to. Not refering to the story being dark, but the actual filming.

Mr. Kardasian, the lawyer, died and his widow married Bruce Jenner, the swimmer. They have a really popular reality show called Keeping Up With the Kardasians, which we definitely do not watch! The son is on Dancing with the Stars right now, and he seems pretty normal, in comparison to the females of the litter.

Congratulations to a good looking Shadow, and Hi, Everybody.
We have come out of retirement again and are spending long days at work. We are reading the blog but haven’t added much because we get home so late, many of you have signed off for the day and we’re beat. Today we worked and managed to sneak out for a while to run errands for the Letters from Home Program. We had to pick up
some supplies to include in our gift packages that will go out for Christmas. We expect to pack 5,000 to 6,000+ packages this month. When we finished our errands, we decided to take a short cut back to work and I want to show you something we saw along the forest road. It’s a youngster and probably doesn’t weigh a lot more than I do. His coat makes him look big.

Barb and Maggie – yes, we are fed up with celeb marriages too. Ok, so sometimes couples grow apart and divorce is the best solution. But 72 days after spending millions? Come on.
Our Dad does weddings, and he always insists on meeting couples together at least a couple of times before the ceremony. And he has turned down some couples that he knew weren’t ready, or not really committed.

Rio – was your friend’s doctor thrilled to bits with her amazing lifestyle changes?

We talked to Melanie a little bit ago – she had acupuncture earlier today and is feeling a little unsteady since. She said he did a lot of “deep work” today, and she is too lightheaded to look at the computer, so she may not be back today. But she is ok – no worries.

    Hi Guys!

    Happy All Saint’s Day!

I’m am very glad to hear that those who were without power, are nice and toasty again!

Bear: My town was one of the towns that postponed Halloween. In my opinion, that was a good idea, since we have a lot of trees down, with more falling every day. There are a lot of people in my area without electricty…All those folks are now all over our B&N charging their cell phones and laptops, taking up space so that the people who want to patronize the Starbucks cafe cannot.

Melanie: Great Newf picture. I especially like the Newf with the white fur.

Rio: Tell your friend I said, “You go girl!” I know how hard it is to lose that extra “insulation.” WW’s helped me lose 25 lbs. this year.

I DO NOT feel bad about KK at all. I think the whole thing was just a publicity scam so that poor Kim would still have the spotlight on her. Question: Does anyone know what the shortest “celebrity” marriage was?

Gongratulations, Shadow! You are a fine looking doggie. You are also named after the Prof’s favorite radio show… 🙂

Tyb: You make me so proud with all the fine and noble work you do. Cool picture of the bear, too!

Maggie: I saw the original “True Grit” as a little girl with my family in the theatre. I liked the ramke very much.

Rebbeca: I hope Luna and Belle Star return home safely. I had a great time with the girls. I hope they had fun too.

  42. BearSpiritDog
    6:15 pm on November 1st, 2011

TYB: Those bear photos are amazing! Looks bigger than a cub in those photos. I can see a definite resemblance to the Newfs size-wise. I always thought they looked like big cuddly bears.

Barb&Magpie: We ordered True Grit from Netflix a while back, but feel asleep watching it. This is nothing against the movie, just distracted at the time and very tired. So will have to watch it again one of these days. Let me know how you like it. Water for Elephants is in the Queue
Read an article this morning on Huff Post about Kris Jenner Kardashian saying she received a call from N. Simpson the morning of the murder asking to meet with her about something very important. The big headlines were: I could have saved Nicole’s life!

  43. Barb & Maggie

Rose, I will take a guess at the shortest celeb. marriage. Brittany Spears with the home town guy. Got married in Vegas, think it lasted about 48 hours. Are we right?

  44. Samantha
    6:22 pm on November 1st, 2011

We’ve been watching Once Upon a Time. I really like it but I’m not sure where the show is going to go.

I saw True Grit and Water for Elephants. Both were excellent. The Water for Elephants book was better but in my opinion that’s almost always the case. True Grit was really good. Not usually my kind of movie but I really enjoyed it.

  45. Rose
    6:29 pm on November 1st, 2011

Maggie: That was an excellent guess. Britney was married to the home town guy for 55 hours. The answer is actually Zsa Zsa Gabor and Felipe de Alba….24 hours.

Should have known it was Zsa Zsa. Good one Rose!

We read Water for Elephants and really liked it, although we found the graphic descriptions of animal abuse and slaughter to be disturbing. I understand they toned it down for the movie. I think it is rated PG13.

One of these days mom is going to get up the nerve to write to some of these people who have more money than they know what to do with and just politely ask for some. Mom does not want to spend the rest of her days in this house in the concrete jungle, but without an influx of cash, she will probably be buried in the back yard next to the hamster. *sigh*

And yes, I was licking my wounds. They are still not healed and may not be for some time. I’ll probably get an infection and gangrene.

Samantha; As for Water for Elephants – we’ve kind of put off both reading the book and watching the movie because of the subject matter. I will ask for the book from our library. Then will let you know how I like it.
Have only watched the Once Upon a Time pilot so far. Will get to last Sunday’s show sometime this week. Barb: You can go to and go into the shows section to pick up past shows you missed. As you know, we watch everything on-line because of the lousy TV reception here (no cable)

There’s been quite a break since I posted the pictures earlier today. Right after they went up, I left to deliver our Letters from Home goodies to the center (about 50 miles away from home) where everything is counted, sorted, acknowledged, etc. Along the way I kept thinking of the bear. The funny thing that I realized was that the supplies that had been picked up earlier in the day were teddy bears. There is an elderly lady
who learned about our program, and she passes her spare time writing little messages that she attaches to the bears, and she sews a bit of material to one of the paws as its
“blankie”. She calls the bears “Care Bears” and has sent hundreds of them to the troops to let them know we care. I had one lady make a special trip to tell me how much the Care Bear meant to her son who had received one of our boxes. She said that when he got ready to leave Iraq, he gave everything he had except for the bear away. He kept it and treasures it. She said that it’s hard to believe how much her 35 year old son loves his teddy bear.

TYB: Echoing Rio’s comment: Thanks for all you do. We know it is appreciated so much by the troops. We think you two are very special.
Rio: I’m sure your Friend made sure there is plenty of firewood and kindling for the fireplace. And, that there will be food to get through the worst of it. A storm warning is forecast for the Northern Cascades for Wednesday night, but we will be okay by the water. Just colder than usual at night.
Samantha: Some here on the blog have read A Dog’s Purpose, which Nana has on request at the library. Lost Dogs is being requested also. Sounds like a box of kleenex is a must for both.
