Gooood morning, everyone. Are we excited, or what? Have a serene Saturday.

Good serene Saturday to HOH and All.

I believe we will be going to see ” Peter Pan” today. A big theater festival is putting it on for a fund raiser. I know the young man playing Smee. They are flying people in and out over the audience. How cool is that?

Today is the Tenth! Eight more days to send me pictures. Two people have sent things in and gotten them returned.

I have actually gotten some of my own in to Rebecca. (Usually a last minute deal)

Thank you, HOH for the Serene Saturday. We can all use one of those.
60, kool and drizzly here…a good excuse to do “inside things”.
Melanie: Loved your comment last night about the “Newfoundland of Kats”.
Staff & Dawson: That tree is Huge…thankfully there was no damage from the fall other than it obstructing the entrance.

Staff: Thank you for the fashion advice last night. Mom loves it but is considering the caftan as she has a jillion (is that a lot ?). She even has a “formal one which is sheer with a liner (gah). Since all the neighbors think she’s looooney tunes, it will be great!

    Hi Wölfie!

Masquers that is one huge Kat AFTER he lost weight. Hmmm . . I wonder about a human underwater treadmill . . Pondering

For dinner? B. Stovers’s Spudder soup. I will be staring it right after my cupof tea.

Got up and started the pickled beets heating while I had breakfast. They are sitting on the counter now except the ones in the canner being processed. The recipe I followed said 5 pints. I have 9-1/2 pints finished. I had to go down in the spidery basement and get 4 more pint jars because I only told Mr.Staff to bring me up 6 before he left. I hate the spidery basement.

A friend just emailed me to say there is an auction up in town today. I do have to go up there and get supplies for next week so I might as well do it today. I do not need a thing from an auction but I cannot resist.

3 more minutes for this batch of beets and then the second batch.
Time to go get ready to travel. BBL

Melanie, Staring at the recipe is the most important part of cooking. I had two recipes for the beets and went back and forth between the two.
Hmmmm. I had three recipes now that I think of it. Two for the beets and one for the onions that I like with my beets. I ended up using all the beets from the garden and almost all my onions. I snuck a couple of bites after I had the rest canned. Just the way I like it. sugar and vinegar. I just realized I forgot the dill. RATS.

Staff: Sounds grrrreat but tell us why it is always so HOT during canning time?

Melanie: Your dinner sounds delish but mom said something about firing up the barbie to celebrate a return to real food and throwing a banana and toast at it. She is pretty sure the rice and applesauce will slide through.

Herd of Hounds. I was thinking about the weather as I was canning. Usually it is way too hot. It has been perfect weather here lately. In the high 70’s. Not too windy. Sunny and no rain. Perfect if you are not a farmer anyway. I have the doors and windows open in the kitchen. Usually in canning weather it is hot hot hot and the AC is cranked and the windows are closed tight.

You guys are making me Hungry!

Hounds: A Banana & Toast doesn’t sound much like Bar-B-Q fare, but to good to hear Real Food is on the agenda.

We remember the days of Canning the Fruits and Veggies. Slaving over a hot stove is more like it. One Favorite Memory is that of making home-made Root Beer. The hard part was waiting the 2 weeks until it was ready to drink.

Staff, Just picked some beets from the garden to have for dinner tonight. Sorry to admit this, but I am not a big fan of pickled beets. Just like them cooked with a little butter and salt and pepper. The pickled beets do look lovely in the jars though.

We are going to try a side with the roast chicken tonight. Saute onion and a green pepper in oil, then add fresh corn cut off the cob. Cook a couple of minutes then add black beans. May add a little brown rice too. How does that sound? Should we add anything else?

Need to go back to last night and look at Dawson’s tree.

Our old neighbors from Lena and driving in to have lunch today and check out our house. They drive motorcycles, he has a Harley and she drives a Harly three wheeler. It is their passion, and they ride all over, even going to Texas and the Smokey Mountains. Nice way to see scenery, but a little dangerous for Barb’s taste at this stage of life.

  17. Melanie
    12:13 pm on August 10th, 2013

It is a beautiful day here too. Nice! Maybe the peaches will ripen. The peach tree is going to lose some limbs if the fruit doesn’t do it’s thing soon.

I used to can, Staff. The last thing I did was dilly beans. Yummmmm.

How on earth did you prepare the beets. I have tried to cut a raw beet. That is NOT easy.

    HOH, grilled banana sounds good.

  18. Barb & Maggie
    12:20 pm on August 10th, 2013

Melanie, When I do beets for dinner I just cut the root and top off, cover them with water and boil for 30-40 minutes till they are fork tender. Let them sit for a couple of minutes, then the skin will slide right off by pincing it a little with your fingers. Slather on some butter (Irish or American) and a dash of salt and pepper. They are delish.

HOH Many years ago I had my tonsils out. (Over Christmas vacation. I missed both my birthday and Christmas sob sob sob). I could only eat soft foods. I would have killed for some nice crispy toast. I thought it was going to be so wonderful having ice cream and soda for food. To this day, 50+ years later, I am not that fond of ice cream.

OK off to the auction now.

If the Howlers have their way, the chickies will be brought in the house.

That is excellent O’Howlers. I just wonder how the rents get the chickens into the transport.

Peter Pan was fun. The children playing the leads were great. The adults were the pirates. They were excellent. Hook and Smee? Beyond excellent.

I parked just a block away from the theater. Then we walked the wrong way for five blocks. Both Zoë and I were thankful that the seats were comfortable when we finally got to sit down.

    Greetings All!

Yesterday was a busy day at my busy place. My department is moving to another building, and we were given a day and a half to pack! Yeep! Too much stuff. Then I had to take some special things over myself, so they would not break. I have a Royal Mum bear, a penguin quilling from Rio’s friend, a Derek Jeter bobble head, and several Legos. I am black and blue.

THEN, last night Grizz and I went to see Justin Hayward. Boy, he was great!

Wookie’s Dad, Teddy is so adorable I want to squeeze him. More pictures please!!

RIO! Thanks for posting that picture of you, Beau and Pepper! I love that picture! I am so happy it is on the Rose quilt.

Speaking of pictures, Rebecca— You MUST post your picture of your new do. What a wonderful cause. I really do admire you. (Whispering) What did the Giant say? And I think I need to see some pictures of the Alaska office of the Little Detective Agency.
