Colonoscopies Are What, Again?

“Well, well,” Bernie says, “here’s a study that seems to show that the sniffing powers of some members of the nation within might equal colonoscopies in accuracy when it comes to detecting the big C.”

What’s he talking about? You tell me.

“So maybe I’ll postpone the test for a few more years,” he says, “let these new canine clinics get established.”

Sounds like good thinking to me.

“How do I smell, Chet? Healthy?”

How does Bernie smell? He has the best human smell there is; I must have mentioned that already.

Bernie: I do not recommend putting off tests. However, being sniffed by a dog (fun) does beat a colonoscopy (torture), paws down.

The worst part of a colonoscopy is the preparation. Even that is no so bad anymore.
I agree with Dawson on my first one, the prep was torture. The last one I had in August was a piece of cake. No problem at all. Whatever the case, they certainly beat the big C.

As for our sniffing powers: I have met service dogs that smell low blood sugar and warn their people of the danger. I know others that smell a seizure or a heart attack coming on and alert their “charges” to take recommended action. Someone about to have a heart attack can take medication, and depending on the situation anyone about to have a seizure should sit down or move to a cleared area so that he doesn’t hurt himself by falling on or against something. i even know a lady who has a service dog that’s trained to jump into the clothes dryer and bring her clothes to her
because she can’t bend down to reach into the dryer herself. We are incredibly trainable to do things for our people.

    Hi all,
I am not scheduled at the busy place today so I have been talking things over with my insurance company. They have been denying some claims and we are NOT amused. They SAY they will do “some legwork” and get it fixed. We shall see.

    Anyway.

Last summer, a few months after the transplant, I met one of those service dogs who can sniff out illness. He came into the quilt shop with his friend who was a quilter.
His job was to tell his friend when she needed her medicine. You could just see the intelligence and kindness in his eyes. There were two of us from the shop talking to his friend. Buddy, the service dog, just sat there until she gave him permission to meet us.
He walked over to the two of us, ignored my friend, came up to me and put his nose up close to my transplant incision and gave it a few gentle sniffs. I petted him and he went back and sat down by his friend. I told his friend I had just had a transplant and she said “Oh, that’s why he wanted to smell you.”

She also said dogs can’t be trained to do it. They just are naturally that way or not and they can test for the ability and then work with the dog to enhance it.

    I think it is amazing.

We used to know a weiner dog who like to sniff men’s parts…hmmm. Come to think of it, the dog’s name was Doc, although as one of 7 pups in a litter, he had been named for Snow White’s dwarf.
Wonder if he was trying to live up to his name?

Good morning everyone and Happy New Year! Year of the Rabbit, as we already know. Time to relect, focus on home and family, and have a calm and peaceful year. Dog knows we could all use this time of peace and reflection. Barb is going to try that full moon/garden thing each month and see what that brings. When is the full moon in Feb? Her garden is pretty snow covered right now.

Re: colonoscopies -not the most fun but TYB is right. The one Barb had in 2005 was worse than the one in 2010. Unfortunately, because of her breast cancer and some polyps, the doc wants her to have another one later this year. She is not thrilled.

    B. – People buy smartphones for many different reasons. Mom got hers last year because she wanted to have a camera with her all the time. She picked the Droid Incredible because it has an 8 megapixel camera and the ads all showed great photos. What a disappointment! That’s why Mom is trading it in for the iPhone, which has been out since last June and she knows it takes good pictures.

I have a trak phone. It is per minute, so I don’t talk on it much. I had it cause it was needed so I could be notified if a kidney was available. Now I have a kidney so I thought I could ditch the phone, but, who knew, it is a wonderful alarm clock to tell me when to take my pills.
I have texted on it, with great difficulty, just because it is cheaper than talking. (only 30 seconds per text)

My phone is $1 per minute roaming and it is roaming at home in ND and here in MN. The only place it is not roaming is at the quilt shop in Mayville ND.
That is why I go there a lot.
Not because of my friends or all the quilt toys there.

Mr.Staff is too cheap to pay a monthly charge. The trak phone service we have is $5 a month. Mr.Staff loves it. Pictures are not included.

He says you just can’t get that price anymore and he is keeping it until they make him quit.

Staff is too lazy to fight about it. When they started this Mr.Staff said she could have a monthly DSL charge or a monthly phone charge but not both.

She chose DSL. Dial up is a waste of time. (Do any of you remember dial up?)

My dad who is kind of tech savvy (although mom is the real pro there) has only sent two text messages in his entire life and that was because it was the absolute only way he could communicate with a particular client abroad, and I am pretty sure that my mom has never sent a text message at all, so put them on the list too. Same on the camera thing too, the only time my dad even used the camera on his phone was when he accidentally turned it on and then had to figure out how to turn it off. Me, I’m a big fan of pee mail, but that is something else entirely. Wookie

P.S. For Stover, to try to respond to your question, the iPhone’s functionality is really intended for people who want to use their phone as a sort of mini-computer, including sending and receiving emails as well as texting. A lot of the functinality you have on your iPad, including many apps, photo album etc., are essentially the same that you would get on an iPhone, only the screen is a lot smaller and the storage capacity in the iPhone is probably quite a bit less (i.e., while perhaps technically feasible, I doubt if you would want to either store or read e-books on your iPhone). The iPhone also has a GPS capability, but again the screen is probably smaller than many GPS devices (like Nuvi or TomTom or Magellan) and probably more difficult to use while driving than a dedicated GPS device.

DSL vs Dial up???? No contest.

Have to go for now. Mama is taking me (Tupper) to the vet. I pulled a Rio and jumped off the couch wrong. We go out and do errands and go to the vet, come home, turn on the local news and find out a State of Emergency has been declared in NM. We will be fine; mom has sleeping bags rated to 50 below or some such nonsense.

I was talking about our hillside tailgate party at supper today and mentioned that I had a number for the game. A guy at my busy place sells them each year.

I am not sure how it works but Mr.Staff says he knows. My numbers are 1 and 6. So in order to win those numbers have to be the last numbers of any score anytime. Like 21 and 6 would win me $40. Mr.Staff says not to hold my breath.

Does anyone else coming to the party have numbers?

Gosh Mr. Husky. I bet NM thought they wouldn’t need much of those two items since you are usually so warm. I wonder why the electricity is stuck though? Can’t it flow over wires? You certainly can’t ship it in trucks. Even I know that.

Rio, I appreciate your restraint about pictures. That was a terrible picture of me. Staff is still in my bad books over that.

SH: Why is your natural gas stuck in Texas?

  79. Macy the Min-Pin
    8:00 pm on February 3rd, 2011

Mr. Husky, do you have mother issues?

The NM electricy is stuck in Texas because they sent it to us to try and stop the rolling blackouts we have been having. Not sure what is plugging up the gas lines.

Mom went to a craft fair and one of the vendors scanned her card on his eye phone. Mom gets a pop-up daily offering her the service. Not sure what she has to sell. Maybe her rocks. She did paint quite a few gray ones and is now ready to move on to beige. We took a picture, but are now sure how to load it off the camera card without loading all the pics we did yesterday..major pondering.

Mom thinks the best thing about her iPhone is that if she is off somewhere and realizes that she forgot to harvest her Farmville crops, she can do it from her phone. Plus there are goodies to buy for FV that are only available on the iPhone, so I think she thinks she is special because she has theses things.

She also enjoys Words With Friends, which is like an old mail chess game. You play your scrabble like word, send it, and when your opponent(s) have time they play their word. Mom usually has 5 games going at once so there is usually one that it is her turn.

She also wishes to be added to the do not text club. She does not see the point, plus she has bad thumbs that do not cooperate.

Tyb- I think it is safe to say there is a VERY small number of under 40’s here. Very small.

That is the expression the news is using “stuck in Texas”. I watched more news and the explanation they are giving is that there is a shortage of electricity in both Texas and NM and electricity is what gets the natural gas here from Texas. They only have enough electricity to bring a trickle of gas in.
I am not sure why there is a shortage of electricity…something about overuse, the cold, and transformers blowing.

They are setting up shelters all over the state for people. No Pets Allowed, but my folks wouldn’t go to a shelter anyway.

BTW, I will not be at the stadium on Sunday. I am still having the hilltop party. Someone please at least stop by. I feel like my little party got lost somewhere along the line, but I have already placed orders, so the party goes on.

Maggie..we are confused. Where did you get a Newfie?

Oh, and we are expecting more snow tonight. Big talk on the local stations is that Texas will never get another Super Bowl because of this weather. Shame on us, but I am pretty sure a large part of the country got the same storm we did.

The larger amounts of snow tonight are expected for Gus and BooBear in Houston of all places.

Mr. H..I guess that explains the jar comment?

My dad works with the state emergency preparedness commission and at their last conference they had an entire session on dealing with pets in an emergency situation. Texas pets can expect much better treatment than the New Orleans ones did.

Macy – We want to come to your hilltop party but the weather is so terrible. Little Sammie would freeze.

  87. Tupper and Gilly
    8:27 pm on February 3rd, 2011

Hi everyone – Gilly here for a change. Tupper is kind of drowsy tonight after all her adventures at the vet. And Mama is still saying so many bad words, she probably won’t go near the computer for a while.
Mama took Tupper to the vet that we have always gone to…except our nice old vet has retired, and sold his business to PollyAnna and her 12 year old sidekick. We have met PollyAnna before (Oh I’m just SURE that everything will be alright in a couple of days, why don’t we wait and see if it goes away….all said with a GIANT smile, in a cutsy pie voice….yuck), but the 12 year old was new to us. So Mama thought it would be good to try her. Mama explained to this vet that Tupper has sprained or wrenched her leg – that she has had this before and needs an anti-inflamatory. She told the vet that Tupper has been getting carried up and down stairs, and isn’t allowed to jump off the couch, and that her leg is lots better, but she just needs a little help.
But the 12 year old (ok, maybe she isn’t THAT young, but she sure looks like a snot nosed little kid)decides that Tupper needs to have all kinds of bloodwork. And her rabies shot it due. And she wants to x-ray Tupper’s leg. She won’t give Mama the anti-inflamatory, or a rabies shot, or even refill our heartworm prescription unless Mama lets her do all this labwork. Mama told her that Tupper is healthy and up to date on everything, but the 12 year old says that SHE doesn’t know Tup, only our old vet did, and she needs to do all this.
All Mama wants is for Tup to feel better, so she said go ahead, but she wouldn’t let her do the xray. Then the 12 year old said she would call us later and let us know about the tests, and then Mama could BRING TUP BACK TO THE VET for her shots and the antiinflamatory. So Tup has been to the vet twice today, and Mama is still walking around swearing about “I’ll give HER a blood test!”. Seems like Mama thought $300 was a big bill when she knew what Tupper needed when she first walked into the office.
Oh dear….sounds like we will be looking for a new vet!

    Yes, I have numbers! 0 + 5 and 5 + 4. Lots of 5’s there.
We will win $125 if it lands on our numbers.

    8:36 pm on February 3rd, 2011

Hmm, Tupper sounds like she does need a new vet, before her mama takes the 12 year old to task!

I have no numbers. I like the number 10 but that doesn’t work. Our family does a Superbowl themed dinner. We like the idea of cheese, but don’t think we’ll do any steel pipes.

Macy, Melanie was close – the Newfies, Joe and Gus, live with Kelly’s daughter, s-i-l, and 3 kids. One of whom is the cute little blondie that Mollypop likes so much. The other photo that Barb tried to post twice was a funny shot of Gus all covered with millions of tiny snowballs embeded in his fur.

Also, Macy, your comment about Siber having mommy issues was funny. Are you suggesting a freudian slip?

GRUMP!…. My computer, now that it is finally on again, is acting up tonight….grrrrr!… She came home in a bad mood and her knees hurt and she said she needed to use it to email someone a photo…snort!…Well, that took forever! Now she is off trying to figure out some food and I finally get to see if I can post something…dammit!…Dammit to hell this old computer…bugger!…..What are we talking about?…sniff!

T & G, That $300 bill is outrageous! Are they trying to pay for their new practice? We think you should look for a new vet, if there are other good choices nearby.

  95. Siber-H
    8:48 pm on February 3rd, 2011

Mollypop, I don’t think it is dangerously cold weather, but NM evidentally can’t handle this. Mom is going around muttering that this weather is perfectly normal for some parts of the U.S.
We should have a warm up by Sat., but it still won’t be up to our normal average temperature for this time of the year.
Schools have been closed for 3 days and will be closed again tomorrow. Pipes in the schools have burst and the school busses won’t start. We are a state of wimps when it comes to cold weather.

    Some interesting typos today. 🙂
I have never had a cell phone. When I try to answer one I usually hang up on the caller accidentally.
I agree with Macy. I prefer to be on the hilltop for the Supper Bowl. The boxes sound nice but I like the open air, truth to tell.

Oh dear..we are very sad here. Mama has been talking to a rescue shelter for two weeks about adopting a sweet little Corgi that they had. We have been so excited to have a new baby sister.
But the rescue people just emailed…they won’t adopt her out as she has bad seizures and some other depressing stuff. Mama is crying and we have to go sit and cuddle with her.

    Thanks Melanie,
I followed your link. Those guys must have a great sense of humor. They are so deadpan.

OOO Wow, look out for that tachion beam!

Well Abbie, Staff and I are planning to fly in on a lear jet. The airports here are open and doing just fine. We only got 6 inches off the edge of the storm. We will be bringing in some treats. Let us know if you need any of those hot air blower thingys to keep the air warm up on the hill by Macy’s place. I think we will all have a great time as long as the electricity doesn’t all go to New Mexico.

I am thinking salmon cupcakes and lobster patties for all. Should be a great time.

It is probably too late to respond to Melanie’s question about 1967. Barb said she was not in Illinois then. She moved here in 1971. Also, in order to get rid of some of the snow, they put it in this big melter thingy that can melt tons of it really fast. Then it gets poured into Lake Michigan. Some of the smaller communities still have to truck it away.

Sunday is supposed to be 45. You northern pups surely have warm weather wear. We have rented a tend with a couple of outdoor heaters so we should be just great.

I will be wearing my traditional black with brown accents. I am not sure if I have an appropriate bandana, but my green Christmas sweater should be good for a Packer supporter.

Freudian slip indeed Maggie, tee hee

So sorry T and G. Give mama lots of kissies.
