Christopher Hitchens

“We didn’t really discuss Christopher Hitchens when he died,” Spence says.

“And now it’s too late,” says Admin.

“Humor, Spence. Black humor, or at least slate gray. How about we sum up by saying he was a very good writer and an outstanding speaker? And his essays on writers like Graham Greene, Anthony Powell, Evelyn Waugh, and many more, are the very best of their kind.”

“What about how he faced death?”

Welcome tough lifer, Ben, dignified dude, Sally, Chester.

Excellent BlueKat! CH was a great writer and speaker. I didn’t agree with most of the things he had to say, but his ideas and themes were obviously thought through.

Hello Mr. Redbone Hound, sir! Glad to see you back. Have missed your Southern charm.

Acupuncture today! Then Staples (the store, not in me), the grocery store and the bank. Hmmm. Maybe I should go to the bank first?

    Good morning!
Whenever I read or listened to Christopher Hitchens he always made me think for myself, was always extremely interesting and stood up for the principles in which he believed. A shockingly honest and educated man.

Last night I finished 11-22-63 and I really really liked it.

I have lots of books waiting – free from Amazon for the Kindle – and then I have three Jack Reacher’s that I just got from Audible. Decisions, decisions.

Book!…. We are reading a book called, The Alchemist…snort!…She picked it up in the second hand store….wuffle!…It is a fable about following your dreams. If I followed my dreams I would be chasing squirrels down the street all day long…heh!…From the book, “My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer,” the boy told the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky.” Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams.”

    Hey there!

It is way cold up here in Warwick!!! For the past two nights Prof and I have lit the fireplace. It was very nice and cozy!

Molly’sMom: What Reacher’s did you get? I read “The Affair” as my very first Reacher book, and as one of my Christmas presents, the Prof gave me “The Killing Floor.” I think that is the first in the series???

Right now I am reading “Lust for Life,” the story of a pug in Colorado, NO, NO, NO, just kiddin’. It is an historical novel about Vincent Van Gogh. Very good, and very interesting.

B: The Prof and I went back to see “The Artist.” I just LOVE this film!!!

I don’t know why I had never heard of Christopher Hitchens before he was first mentioned on this blog.

Mollypop’s Mom, Glad you really, really liked that book whose name we are never to mention on this blog. Mom really, really liked it too. I wonder how the Howler’s mom is doing with it?

Mom read in one “All Quiet On The Western Front”, yesterday. No, she had never read it before and she is glad she wasn’t made to read it in school because she wouldn’t have liked it then.

Will being leaving for errands after lunch. OTAS gave Jesse (our go-to guy) at tattoo on Tuesday night. I saw it for the first time today.

Quite great, if I say so myself! OTAS included Jesse’s birds and guitar in the tattoo.

Rose: I haven’t gotten to The Artist yet. I will. Right now I’m putting a bookcase together. And it’s snowing out and I don’t feel like driving in it. (And for the first time in my life I don’t have to drive anywhere if I don’t want to!!) Lust for Life was made into a film many years ago with Kirk Douglas I think. I’ve never seen it.

SH: I’ve taught All Quiet on the Western Front several times, most recently last semester in my Victorian/Modern lit class. It’s the best novel I know of that can show the main cause of the change between the two periods. Did your mom like it?

Stover, All Quiet on the Western Front is now up there as one of mom’s all time fiction favorites. It is excellent. It is a timeless story, but it also puts the reader right there with those guys during that tragic time in history.

Mom basically read the book in one setting. She didn’t get much else done yesterday.

She also said you can guess the ending from almost the first pages of the book, but that takes nothing away from the story.

SiberH: Don’t despair…I had never heard of him either, until the Prof told me about him several years ago. And thanks for the tip on “The Killing Floor.” By your recommendation, I will read them in order.

B: Building a bookcase sounds quite ambitious! I thought you were retired. There is still no snow in New York. 🙁

Rose: You might enjoy the new biography out about Van Gogh by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith. (They won the Pulitzer Prize for their biography on Jackson Pollock.) I’m currently reading it.

I’ve discovered that I’m not good at putting bookcases together. Think I’ll donate some books to the library–books that are already on shelves–so that I have room for the books in piles.

Mom is way excited about the Stephanie Plum movie. She was afraid that it would get all Hollywooded up. But isn’t Morelli supposed to be a cop? WTH? And Ranger is not smoldering enough for her taste, but she will probably get over it. She agrees, Grandma needs to be way weirder looking. Lula looks exactly like mom imagined, but the other girl whose name has taken flight needs to be a blond. When does it come out, she can’t wait and she is like #103 on the waiting list at the library for the new ebook. Maybe the real book will be faster.

Mom had not heard of CH either, but did a little research after he died. Our Niki was surprised when Mom asked her if she had heard that he died. (she is, unfortunately, a fan). Apparently, she thinks mom never sticks her head out of her shell at all. Heh, heh, thanks blog for making her seem way hipper than she is.

    Laughing here. 🙂

Someone suggested what might be the problem with my upstairs computer. When I started using the humidifier (so I could breathe with this rotten cold) all the buttons froze up on the monitor. The guy thinks that all the gunk that’s gotten in there over the (many many many) years has solidified because of the humidity.

So I’m supposed to take a soft damp washcloth, lay it flat on a table and put the monitor on it’s side. BUT not put too much pressure on it. Then by osmosis the gunk will loosen up. WHAT? The thing is as heavy as lead!

My guess is I will put a bunch of coins down to rest it on and then use the wash cloth. That might work. Have no idea.

Anyhoo, it won’t be tomorrow because Zoe, my sister and I are going to the Christmas tree exhibit at the museum in town. That will be fun.

I’m signing off for the night. Getting cold down here.

Someone mentioned a Clumber Spaniel earlier. They have been described as the perfect hunting companion for the older gentleman, because well, they sort of clumber along. (Is that a word?)

Rio, Barb has not read SK in years, or even watched his movies for exactly the reasons you gave. However, this one, with the date for a name, she loved.

Also, Water for Elephants – loved that one too. Also The Help was a good one. Saw both of those movies as well.

  78. Tupper and Gilly
    9:34 pm on December 29th, 2011

Dawson – Depp is now claiming that he has some Native blood – in the most condescending tone of voice. He says a grandmother was some kind of Native, maybe Cherokee or Creek.
In our world, if you don’t know your Nation, or can’t name your family, you don’t get to claim the rights of being Native.
Sorry folks but this is a hard line for us.
Depp is wrong. He claims that he is doing this because “Tonto always got the raw deal” in the old Lone Ranger shows, and he wants to tell the story with the Lone Ranger as the sidekick. Ok, so how come now that Tonto is gonna be the Hero – he can’t be played by a Real Native actor – there are quite a few of them out there, and the movie is being filmed in New Mexico – hello – home of the APACHES that Tonto is supposed to be!

T&G: This version of the Lone Ranger will not be the conventional adaption, but more of a quirky type tale told from the side-kick’s point of view. Depp would fit such a role well. Armie Hammer will be cast as the Lone Ranger.

Rio: I saw that one coming…..

Aha!….Now I see why Depp is taking that role…snort!… The role of Tonto as the hero instead of the Lone Ranger…grunt!…This is more his style. Who the heck is playing the Lone Ranger?…sniff!…Is this going to be a comedy like that Pirate thing he did?….choke!

T&G: I hear what you’re saying. Things have improved over the years but it seems to be a long, painfully slow process. Not all casting directors seem to be on the same page.

You all will have to just accept that we are going to be grumpy about this.
We are sure that there are Native actors that could play Tonto in a quirky, ironic version of the old story. Depp could just as easily play the Ranger and camp it up.
If he really thought Tonto was getting a bad break – how come now he’s giving Native actors a bad break.
    Ok – we’re done

So Rio – how is your Friend’s tooth?

T&G: Many are sharing your outrage over the casting of Depp in the role of Tonto. However he has been associated with the script since 2008, so we are assuming this is the main reason for his involvement. He is saying he wants to change the image of Native Americans as portrayed on tv and in classic films because it is in his heritage.

Now I have to find a warm place to read. The living room is freezing. Good night all.

Tupper&Gilly: We are 100% with you on this subject. If he really wanted to help those he claims to be so concerned about he would have seen to it that the casting was appropriate. Instead, he is taking all the glory. Let’s face it…he did it because he could.

Rio: Yes, we can see him as a campy Lone Ranger.

I’m late to get back to the blog but I see some of you have done your research and learned that, yes, indeed, it is true that Depp will be playing Tonto.
Mom and I are in agreement with everything T&G have said about this.

sigh, I have more bad news for some of you. Tom Cruise is going to play Jack Reacher. Mom’s comment on this is, barf. She will not see the movie.

Masquers – We know we said we were done, but you touched on another really touchy point.
So many celebs claim Native when it suits them –
Cher, promoting her song “Half-Breed” (which is a racial slur in our world)
    Shania Twain
Val Kilmer – when he was promoting his movie (name escapes us) about being a part NAtive FBI guy sent to the reservation
    and now Depp.

But none can trace roots, none have ever done anything for the reservations or the culture, none show any interest once their particular project is over. Nope – Depp’s “concern” doesn’t wash with us. He could change the image of the hollywood stereotype by putting forward a brilliant Native actor who could do the comedy thing.

Ok – this time we are getting off the soapbox for sure. And we are breaking it up to use the wood for the fireplace. Gotta find a way to keep Dawson warm.

Cruisin!….I am so glad I have no emotional attachment to the character of Reacher…snort!…Or I would be mad as hell that Cruiser the Loser is going to play him…sniff!…Just from the comments on this blog I have a definite image of Reacher and Cruise is not It. …heh!

Golinka!….Do you have a specific actor or actors you would like to see in the role of Tonto….snort!

Tooth!…To answer Tuppers questions, that tooths jagged edge has driven my friend insane all day long….sniff!….Her tongue is raw from it….grump! ….Maybe that’s why she’s in such a bad mood tonight. ….yeep!

Pissed!…I sure hate to see my friend Golinka so upset over a movie that will probably be a dud anyways…snort!…Maybe I should put paw to pen and write this Depp guy a letter telling him to lay off the Tonto role….sniff!

    Dear Mr. Depp,

Please think twice no thrice about playing the role of Tonto. If you continue on this Tonto path you will find yourself Cast In Clay and on Exhibit in Newark New Jersey one day. So give the role to a real actor, one who is a preferably a Native American.

Back off pal, you have been warned….sniff!

Hey! Where are all the blogkats? The only one I’ve seen around today has been Bluecat. The Herbs are doing something with a box & tape again and no one noticed my kool link except Rio and he’s not even one of us guys. sniff.

Rio – we knew there was a reason we loved your grumpy little puggy butt! But poor little Beau…
Our favorite Depp is in “Chocolat”. Like the pirate side too.

But most of the movies like this do end up as duds dont they? Wonder why Hollywood keeps doing them.

Siber – if they ever decide to do a remake of Due South, you could try out for Deefenbaker – you would be GREAT!

Butterfly!….It looks like we are staying up to watch the flight of the Monarch Butterfly on Nova…heh!….She is thinking of trying to quill a butterfly, so this is categorized as research I guess….snort! …I’m just happy to be here. Beau is already in bed and I’m sure he is snoring and farting to his hearts content up there…gasp!

LOVE Due South! Still watching the DVDs. Yes to Siber-H as Deefenbaker…a perfect choice. Sadly, the way casting types have been making their decisions of late, we doubt a Siber would even be considered for the role.

All they are trying to do is go to Mexico for vacation…grunt!…They come all the way from Canada and need a summer break for Pete’s sake…sniffle!

    Dear Masquers,
Hey honey, I saw the Cat alogue of Cat books. snark. But for some reason it didn’t seem that funny to me. It seemed like someone said “Hey there are a lot of cat lovers out there, do a little book thingy for them. They will love it no matter what you do.”

Now THIS is funny…especially the second leap.

I just played Staff’s video and yikes! the volume was turned way up high. That hurt my ears this morning. I liked Masquers link although I am not really a cat person. Cats just happen to live in this house, that’s all.
