Christmas Puppies?

“This is the time of year when some people give and receive puppies,” says Admin. “Do we have any advice to give on that?”

“Maybe,” says Spence, “but I think it would be better to hear what others have to say, especially our experts and other caring people in the down below section.”

Welcome returning pal and dude with cool boots.

Good morning all. Christmas puppies? Don’t a lot of those poor babies end up in shelters by spring? Should be well thought out, well researched, and not an impluse move. Life time commitment, you know.

Also, what about weather? Easier to go running outside when the weather is better. Housebreaking is easier in nice temps.

Bear, probably a good decision to borrow that book back after your son has read it. And btw, loved your Christmas card!

I don’t have any advice other than to love the puppy and accept the unconditional love he/she gives you in return.

There is a squirrel standing on his hind legs and looking in through my garden door wall. He either wants unconditional love…or, more likely, food!

    Good morning all.

Puppies!…. Hey, maybe I can arrange to give Beau away as a Christmas present this year….sniff!….Her brother seemed to really like him…heh!

Cawfee!….This morning someone was sitting in her big chair with Beau, I swear that guy is always on her lap…dammit!….Then she reached over to take her first sip of cawfee and Beau dropped his nyla bone right into her cuppa joe….HAR!.snort!… He didn’t get in trouble because she was laughing so hard she started crying…grunt! ….Although, he did not like the taste of his beloved bone after that….heh!

    Excellent advice Barb.

Gus and BooBear: As far as I know, plum pudding originated in Medieval England. It’s the combination of spicy, fruity, brandy-laden cake with the sweet hard sauce that I always liked.

An interesting question, Spencer and Admin.

When we had Christmas puppies, it depended. If an older friends or families without young children, we were more likely to let them pick up their puppies before Christmas. Small children? A few days or weeks after Christmas. Less stress on the puppies.

Of course, we had our puppy people fill out a questionnaire included references and V*E*T*’s number. We called the references and the V*E*T. We have said an absolute no to a few people. We’ve only taken one puppy back.

Dan’s getting his x-ray right now. Will keep you informed.

Riö, you were right. That video was about Pepper’s tail, except for the over the one minute of it of you!

(using font that Riö can’t read) I love that one of Riö begging. He is trim and muscular and so sweet!

Melanie, Your puppy placement is an entirely different secarino. You are reputable breeders, and I don’t think too many people would purchase a Newfie pup on impulse. You probably start your list and questionaire weeks before placement.

I am thinking more of the person walking thru the mall, passing a pet shop (shudder) and saying, Oh, wouldn’t _______ love a puppy for Christmas. Let’s put it in a box with a big red bow and stick it under the tree! So then they end up with an expensive, over priced pup of inferior breeding, with health problems. Think puppy mill!

That is excellent advice also Melanie.

    Rio: Beau is a joker!

One more thing about plum pudding (I’m going to do some research later on “pudding”): My dad’s family always had it. After they were married my mom served it. The first time she tasted it (before they were married) she said (and I can imagine her saying it in a common sense/disgusted tone), “There aren’t any plums in this!”

Now you’re in for it Mollypop’s Mom! (I’d love to see you all warm and fuzzy.)

  14. OleyHowlers

We agree wholeheartedly with Barb and Maggie about Christmas puppies. It must be well-thought-out since they are a lifetime cimmitment. If it is for an adult, it is much better to let that person pick out their own puppy rather than someone else presumong to know what they would want. And if it is for children, only the parents should choose the puppy, and only after much forethought and the knowledge that the puppy’s care and training will be the responsibility of the parents.
Our neighbors loved our big brother Misha and decided they wanted on like him. So the dad went to the same breeder, and the puppy was kept at our place until Christmas morning. That was a well-thought out decision, and Yukon was Misha’s best friend and he lived a very long and healthy life.

    Puppies/kittens etc for Christmas….
Only if it is well planned and desired.
Mama says if someone gave her a baby Corgi, she would be thrilled. If someone presented her with a baby Mastiff- not so much. Not that they aren’t good digs, but they are not her kind of dogs.

We say if someone gave her a baby Corgi, we would be looking up the etiquette of re-gifting REAL fast.

Speaking of…she is making “Rocky Mountain Chili” for tonight’s Howlfest. It is vegetarian and uses anasazi beans which she combined with cranberry beans. Also pepper cornbread to go with it.
And we just placed an order (or actually got in line for an order) of pork at Caw Caw Creek Farm. We will be getting a quarter pig. We’ve heard and seen wonderful things about that farm and the way the pigs are raised.

About puppies for gifts – at the holidays, or anytime. You all have expressed expressed it well – please think ahead and make sure the recipient is able and willing to care for it. As Barb says – this will be a life-time commitment.

    Melanie: Beautiful kitchen!!!

Rio: Your 9th card brought smiles all around!

B: We love Plum Pudding. Do you have a recipe?
There is a certain Gray Squirrel that comes up on the back porch to get drinks of water.

Barb&Magpie: Glad you liked it. We will take your advice and request it back after he (they) read. May have to order another copy for ourselves as that could be sometime down the road.

O.Howlers: We can’t download it because we don’t have a Kindle and think it would take up too much in storage space on the computer. I like the name Yukon.

MollyPop’s Mom: No! Don’t give him your address.

We found out yesterday she will be packing her bags and moving to Massachusetts on January 6. She’ll have 3 boys to play with and a family to hike with. T&G: I did see your message. Thanks for putting up this remider. Last year the Prof got me the Color Nook for Christmas. I’m not really technically inclined, but just this week, I started snooping around on it. It does have wi-fi internet ability, you can load apps, listen to Pandora, order certain magazines and newspapers, and if you like a good Dr. Seuss book (and I do), load color children’s books. Golinka, I would get the Nook color. It is Christmas, after all. Or maybe even the Kindle Fire. We like the looks of those.

    Grandma continues to do well.

Dan. Hmmm. Dan is on pain meds right now because of the trip. He didn’t meet with the doctor (who hasn’t seen the x-ray yet) and told me his info came from the ambulance driver. So I’m not sure how much of this is real.

Another month in rehab. Then he sort of went off talking about appointments he doesn’t have with doctors who do not exist. Luckily, he’s not on pain meds all the time. When he’s not taking them, he is more of this world.

    Congratulations Rose!

So we’ve had three different stories from Dan. All of them have the 1 month in rehab so we’re figuring that is true. Tomorrow Zoe will be talking to docs. We will get the low down.

Mom made plum pudding for 36 people ONCE. Many many plum puddings from scratch and all steamed individually. Wallpaper was peeling off the walls in her little kitchen (first apartment when married which had a PULL OUT galley stove top.) An old Martha Stewart recipe. It was yummy Dad says but one friend sat there and gradually ate a whole bowl of hard sauce (almost a double batch) a spoonful at a time and then complained about a tummy ache the next day. Mom had noooo sympathy for him.

The new kitchen is outstanding. I have to admit that I had trouble visualizing some of the elements when you talked about them early on, but I’ll give you a 15 on a scale of 1 to 10 upon seeing it. I think I had trouble thinking about the red counter top. It’s good that you’re not afraid of color as so many people are. There will be nothing dreary about kitchen chores at your house. Congratulations!

Barb&Magpie: Our movie for this evening is Midnight in Paris.

Tupper&Gilly: The Roku is really easy to set up. Only problem Nana ran into was with the router. Apparently our old one was not working properly, or had not been programmed correctly. When our high speed internet provider hooked up a new one it now works great. We just saw a blurp from Roku today telling of a new feature. Just remembered we haven’t checked that out yet.

Well, Zoe and I did a lot today. We’d do something then rest. Then do something then rest. Then do something and now it’s time to go to bed!

I burned the CDs from Audiobooks (just like they said) to play in the car for OTAS’s present (Dog Who). Guess what doesn’t work . . .

Next plan. Downloaded audible The Dog Who to Zoe’s Kindle and that works so she’s been listening to it when she naps.

I got this in an email this afternoon and think it’s worth sharing.

Nativity scene was erected in a church yard.

During the night the folks came across this scene.

An abandoned dog was looking for a comfortable, protected place to sleep..
He chose baby Jesus as his comfort.
No one had the heart to send him away so he was there all night.

Notice that the dog is a shepherd.

We howled in the Solstice, then stuffed ourselves with rocky mountain chili and pepper cornbread, and Sierra Nevada ale. Welcome, Solstice! Welcome, Light! Siber, it should be time for your howlfest soon. Youse should have seen Pipsqueak running back and forth from one of us to another, trying to howl. What a hoot.

There are a lot of bad latkes out there. Save your tummies. My Mom makes them perfectly my Grandpa,Dad and I say. We like them thin and crispy.
    Classic latkes
Take 6 large Yukon Gold potatoes (about 2 lbs.)
Grate the potatoes using the large holes on a box grater. Transfer them into a strainer set over a bowl. Squeeze dry with your hands.
Grate 1 medium yellow onion the same way.
Mix together 1 egg, 1/2 cup matzo meal, 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt and a few grinds of black pepper.
Drain off the liquid that has collected in the bottom of the bowl ans mix the remaining potato starch that is on the bottom with the eggs etc.
Add potatoes and onion. Mix well
Fry large tbl in 1 inch of oil that has been heated to 375 degrees ( Mom loves her electric skillet for this)
Fray each side about 4 minutes or until nice and brown. Transfer to a cookie cooling rack set over a sheet pan in a 300 degree oven. Sprinkle with a LITTLE extra kosher salt and serve….. Yummmmm your friend Wookie
