Chetspeak Sunday

“The client is a dog?”

I sat up. Bernie was gazing at the photo. I could see it, too. One of my guys was in the picture? Where? And then I spotted her: a tiny fluffball with huge dark eyes, reclining on a satin pillow. I knew satin pillows on account of Leda having had one, although it got chewed up in a kind of frenzy, the details of the episode not too clear in my mind. But that satin taste: so strange and interesting, a vivid memory. I glanced around the Dry Gulch bar: no satin in view.

from Thereby Hangs A Tail (which has new cover art, by the way).

Melanie, The car, The car. That is one Hot car!! That was extremely generous of the Newf Pack, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. They can play with it for awhile before I take possession of it. The color of it also goes well with black Newf hair so I am sure they look way cool driving around in it. I will need it in time to drive Sammie to the movie set.

Speaking of dog hair in a car…Mom drove our neighbor to the auto parts store this week in my truck. Both he and mom rolled down the windows and then he says to mom, “Has Sasquatch been riding around with you?” (dog hair)

Happy Egg Day! The young woman who will be living with us just came by for a walk-thru. She is very nice and we think she will play with us a lot. Of course, the horses and Kat cannot be trusted alone. The rest of us could fend for ourselves, but it will be fun to have company.
Friends came over on Friday night, just to hang out with the ‘rents. And guess what? They brought along 2 Members of the Nation so we could hang out too. Their names are Scout and Hunter and they were very nice, though just a tad too well-behaved for us

There is a new list out of the 20 Top Trendiest Dogs
(Trendy??? I ask you. Dogs are to love, not to be a fashion statement. Really – people are just silly!)Anyway:
    2.Puggle (Pug/Beagle)
    4.Cane Corso
    6.French Bulldog
    9.Dogue de Bordeaux
    11.Coton de Tulear
    12.Blackmouth Cur
    15.American Bulldog
    17.Bernese Mountain Dog
    18.Great Dane
    19.Mountain Cur
    20.Anatolian Shepard

Sheesh – some of these we have never heard of, others sound like an upscale name for “mutt”, and some are just too silly to pronounce. Really, can you imagine telling people you have a “Yorkipoo”, and not have them look at you like you are strange?

This is weird. When I first retired last September I joined a few local meetups. One was for walking around scenic areas on Long Island. Only wee problem is that they walk very briskly and I struggled just to keep up. My wife, who has had knee surgery, could never go to these because of the speed and because they walk up to five miles. About a month ago we were kicking around the idea, “Why not start our own meetup for people who are older and want to just take their own sweet time. A day later I went to and did just that. I had to pay a stiff fee for the privilege and for three days I thought I’d simply wasted my money because nobody responded. Then they sent out the announcement and things got crazy. We now have more than 115 members. I’d picked today for our first walk. Brilliant. It was cold, rainy and ugly, but that didn’t stop six people from showing up to walk with me, Donna and Yuji. Normally I am the shy person who will go to a party and not talk to anybody unless somebody talks to me first, so I feel weird being in the position of leader, but something worked today and the genie is not going back into the bottle.

Terry: Excellent! A couple months ago I was walking when I met a younger long-legged acquaintance who was out walking her dog. I sped up to her pace for several blocks until she turned off. That extremely fast walking gave me a strained muscle that persisted for a couple weeks. Everyone should go at their own pace and mine is not too fast.

I’ve was surprised this morning by the sil and Turtleman who seem to think I am on a losing streak at cards and so were anxious to play. I guess I showed them. Heh, heh. Then I downloaded some books for Dad onto a flashdrive. (Can you believe it. SiberH?) And mowed the lawn with the push mower just before the rains started.

B.Stover keeps reminding me but I forgot again to plant the beautiful basil plants.

Wow Terry, We here are impressed. The Slow Walkers Society. Heh. That is almost as neat as our Literary Blog. snicker.

We are in a rain delay here. Jim is watching the Twins in a Rain Delay and I am watching the garden in a rain delay. If only I had put in 1/2 hour more work last night I would be watching two raised beds in a rain delay. sniff

I did run out between raindrops and put in a border row of sweet yellow onion sets around one end of the finished (full of dirt) raised bed. Then two rows of beets. By then it had started to rain again and the Baltimore Orioles were scolding me.

They have been eating like crazy today. I think all the females rode in on the storm last night and I am on my 4th two pound jar of Grape jelly and I am out of oranges. I have 5 jelly feeders out and 8 orange halves and they wouldn’t be happy with double that.
I have seen over 30 Orioles in the garden and another 15 in the side yard off the deck. I had to put out some feeders and oranges over there because the Orioles were trying to get into my Hummingbird feeder and the 3 male hummers who were fighting over it were getting no nectar at all. I have refilled the jelly feeders three times since this morning. That is over 6 pounds of jelly so far. I am hoping that will last till morning.

The birds that come to my garden for the jelly are Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Yellow Warblers, Catbirds and Purple Finches.

Each of my jelly feeders has a crowd around it today, just like this video.

That rattle like warning sound is the Orioles telling each other to let them at the food. Mr.Staff and I hear it a lot if we stay in the garden too long. Most of the jelly feeders are in the garden.

I think the reason I am having to feed so much jelly today is because there was a ‘fallout’ last night during the storm. Pine siskins, goldfinches and orioles are in a feeding frenzy.

I have a great suet recipe that is peanut butter, lard, oatmeal, cornmeal, a bit of sugar and flour with sunflower seads and peanuts. I got it from Wild Bird magazine. The birds love it. Woodpeckers, chickadees, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Nuthatches and even the Orioles eat it. Since I hang it in a suet feeder some of the ground feeding birds wait below it for pieces that get dropped.

I don’t use straight peanut butter but I know some people do. I have heard of it smeared in holes in branches for the birds. Lots of good protein in Peanut butter.

The alarm goes off in 15 minutes. In the meantime, we cannot sleep.
Staff, we loved reading about your birds. We here have never seen Baltimore Orioles, other than the baseball team. We are now thinking grape jelly and orange slices. Thanks!
Terry, a meetup for walkers is a fantastic idea! Mom is wondering how a meetup for walkers with dogs would work. Pondering…
