Chetspeak on Sunday: C&B Meet Princess, the Show Dog

The huge dark eyes shifted over to Bernie. For the first time that I’d seen, Princess began to move under her own power. Hard to describe it, exactly. Her little legs were going quite fast, a quick trot, you might call it, or even running, but she was hardly getting anywhere. She reached the edge of the tarmac –

“Not on the ground, Princess,” said Adelina. “It’s dirty.”

– and kept on, around a dusty thick-leaved plant – where I’d have lifted my leg, for sure, and almost to the Porsche. Princess gazed at it, then trotted back, her legs almost a blur. And her eyes: was that an anxious look I saw? I was almost feeling sorry for her – how crazy was that? – when she regained the tarmac and stopped near Bernie. Then, eyes right on him, but expressionless now, at least as far as I could tell – she squatted.

“Good girl,” Adelina said.

A yellowish pool began to spread across the tarmac. It got bigger and bigger, shockingly so. The smell was – I’ll admit it – fascinating. But that wasn’t the important part. The important part was the fact of the yellowish pool expanding quickly, the lead edge closing in on Bernie’s shoes, black leather lace-ups with an interesting smell of their own, speaking of smells. We’ll save that for later. The point now was that growing lake on the tarmac and the way Princess kept her eyes on Bernie the whole time.

“A long flight,” Bernie said, stepping away.

– from Thereby Hangs A Tail.

Welcome New Year celebrant, go-getting dude.

Good morning, and Happy Egg Day! Chet the Jet! Meeting Princess for the very first time. Sammy’s opening debut! What could be better?

I’d say that Princess’ human leaves a lot to be desired.

    Good morning all.

Good morning, everyone! Life is better than good 🙂 Chetspeak and Egg Day, nice. Foggy, rainy and relatively balmy here today, 40F right now. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday won’t go above freezing; unusual for here.
Have a slowed down, special Sunday. (Oh, oh. 2 descriptors. We’d better pace ourselves or use Macy’s suggestion.)

Love getting my Sunday Chet Chuckle!

Sun is out, going to be relatively warm. At least until this afternoon.
Time to open a few windows.

Love Chetspeak Sundays, and Good morning to all.

Cold here and we are sitting at the computer watching the 70-something lady across the street try to shovel her way to the mailbox. She said the cold air helps her breath better with her COPD. Would have thought it was the opposite.

We are going to be lazy and stay inside till Josh comes and plows us out. Seems to have stopped snowing for now, thank Dog.

Melanie, why are you opening windows?

Good Morning all–Two fairly peaceful nights in a row for all three dogs. Not best friends yet, but mutual tolerance.
Tonight is Twelfth Night, tomorrow is Epiphany (I was wrong before) two excuses for party food! I’m hoping we all awaken to improved teeth, noses, eyes, and prospects. Be well.

Your highness Sammy, you don’t need no stinkin’ audition. You are already a princess in my book.
It is supposed to be a bit warmer here today too, with freezing rain. Then it gets brutally cold Monday night and Tuesday, with Tuesday’s HIGH only 11 ! Yikes!
I also would like to know why melanie is opening windows.

  9. Staff
    10:21 am on January 5th, 2014

The reason we dwellers in the cold states open windows is to let a little fresh air in and some of the old stale air out. When your house is all closed up for months at a time it gets sort of… ahhh… well what you want is some fresh air. So you open a few windows.

  10. Kat
    10:23 am on January 5th, 2014

We here can’t even open windows once our storm windows are on. I just step outside for some fresh air.

We are going to take the tree down today. Josh is out plowing and will be here around noon to do our driveway. He said we are supposed to get blizzard like conditions later today, so will make a quick dash out for supplies, then hunker down.

Good Morning Everyone! A slowed down Sunday sure sounds Special to us!
Hounds: Your Photo last night came through Right-Side-Up and it’s a good one.

Diane-C: Saw your photo of Hvorostovsky, the Russian Singer, early this morning but we weren’t quite sure what the connection was/is. That is Great News about everyone getting along. Thank Dog for that. And, thank you for the Reminder that this is the day before King’s Feast Day (Epiphany).
Time to get that tree and decorations down! I’m talking to you, Herd of Hounds! NO waiting until tomorrow. Heh.

Sammie: What’s this? An Audition? Finally.
Good News about Your Girl. It’s no fun having a Gluten Intolerance and having to watch one’s diet like a hawk, but we are just relieved it wasn’t anything serious.

I’m off to an Early Sunday Brunch – Bear

  13. Melanie
    10:36 am on January 5th, 2014

Not capable of taking Kat’s example for fresh air . . snicker . . the windows are open per Staff’s reasoning.

Diane, mutual tolerance can’t go a long way. It is how I made it through the teen years with my guys.

Deb is here today so our tree went out of the house. It is now a Christmas tree out front! It is right next to the bird feeder giving shelter. What better way for a Christmas tree to move on?

Chetspeak Sunday. Love the excerpt from THAT, one of our favorite Chet books. But hey, let’s face it. They are all our favorites.
Sammie: You will definitely be ready for the Princess role since you are getting in shape with your girl…those little legs a blur running down the sidewalk with her.
Chilly this am with a temp of 33…frosty. We won’t be opening any windows in this house today.
Where is the Pug? Don’t remember seeing him yesterday. Hope all is well.
Wondering how T&G’s mama and our pixie are feeling this morning.

  16. Kat
    11:30 am on January 5th, 2014

Masquers, it is all a matter of perspective. It is 24 here which feels balmy after the past several days and nights, and what we have in store for Tuesday. Horses and chickes are out. It goes without saying that Meashka and I are out. Dima? His belly is so bare, he stays indoors a lot. His special doc made a solemn oath that everyone will be given orders not to shave him again, even if they do an ultrasound.
Diane, I am happy that your 3-dog household is a peaceful one. I wish I could say the same but Mama Meash is so darn hard on me. However, she does make for a very good wrassling buddy in this snow!
All of you taking down your trees and other decorations: be sure to eat plenty of treats while working so hard. Momma does not want me to tell youse this, but our stuff was put away on New Years Day, and today is one of total relaxation (and French toast).

  17. Melanie
    11:31 am on January 5th, 2014

Sorry, Diane, that should be “can” go a long way. Not “can’t”.

Princess Sam, about that nasty gluten. Yuckers. Been there, doing that. I have found two sites that I can’t get anything from now because of blood sugar levels, but there is gluten free baklava and Belgium chocolates out there!

    Speaking of making errors.

Has anyone here had a fast weight loss that has complicated either the thyroid or blood pressure medication you were on? Have an email into my doc, but not sure when I can get to her. The cancer stuff comes first.

  18. Barb & Maggie
    11:38 am on January 5th, 2014

Bear, the connection to that hunky Russian singer is that his first name is Dimitri, and the nickname is Dima. Diane thought our Dima might be named for him.

Don’t know anything about those meds, so no help there.

Barb says we get enough fresh air every time she opens the sliding door for me to go out back.

Taking the Christmas tree down as we speak.

  19. Dima
    11:49 am on January 5th, 2014

I did not see Linda’s posts on the end of yesterday’s blog. Thanks for letting me know, Bear. That other Dima is very handsome. Mom thinks he is almost, but not quite, as handsome as me. And I doubt he could sing better than me. I love to sing.
Melanie, Mom says fast weight loss can definitely have an effect on thyroids, but she has no clue how to combat the effects on the medications you are taking. Sorry.

Chetspeak…This is one of the many funny parts of THAT.

    Masquers, Rio was here yesterday.

    From last night:
You guys have my word on it that is not Natasha in the picture. She has better fashion sense than that, but not good sense…wearing heels to do the Iditarod..sigh

Mom thinks the Russian singer is rather Hot. Maybe he has some videos on youtube.

OK, trees, cards, nativity, candles, train, snow globe, tree skirt all put away. Mom hunted for the “surprise ” decoration (isn’t there always 1?) but didn’t find it. We b Christmas free b4 Epiphany.

Siber: Thanx for the heads up about our pal, Riö. It’s only me reading every other word again.
Kat: We know what you mean about perspective. When living in the Midwest, if it got above freezing and the sun was out it felt like a heat wave.
Melanie: Weight loss has caused problems for Mom taking medication too. Is your blood sugar high or low?

  23. C.hobbit
    12:20 pm on January 5th, 2014

Melanie, I had a fast weight loss that did not affect my thyroid. I was surprised. My blood pressure, which was normal, did go down to 106/70 from 120/80. After three months I was able to stop taking my chlorestrial medicine. When I worked as a weight coach for a year, we always advised our clients on blood pressure medicine to have it checked as their weight went down especially if they experienced any light-headeness. Ditto if they had any blood sugar issues.

  24. Melanie
    12:28 pm on January 5th, 2014

Blood sugar is fluctuating. Have to eat small portions every two hours. It’s a drag, Masquers.

    C. Hobbit, I was wondering about the thyroid but to me the blood pressure med made more sense. Will have it checked ASAP.

    12:57 pm on January 5th, 2014

Good Sunday Morning, all. We are having a relaxing day after the weekend of delayed family Christmas celebration. Mom is washing sheets and remaking beds in the extra bedrooms. It’s always easier to do it right after company leaves than waiting for the next overnight guest to come and have to hurry up and get the rooms ready.

Happy belated birthday, Macy’s Mom. Hope you had a great day even if you didn’t get to pluck a duck!!

Mom had all 4 of her wisdom teeth removed at the same time. She was a little fluffy at the time (like always) and hoped that her mouth would swell and she couldn’t eat for a while. Her surgery lasted about 15 minutes. Dad thought something was wrong when they came to the waiting room to get him. No swelling and no pain at all. Mom and Dad went out for Mexican food the next day.

BooBear: Your mom is the lucky one with her extraordinary wisdom tooth extraction experience. Or was it a great dentist?
Howlers: Good idea to stay put today.
Melanie: Eating every couple of hours may be a solution for Mom too. She is going to try it. Looks like the sun is coming out here too. Yay!

  30. O'Howlers

BooBear, Mom had the same sort of experience when her wisdom (teeth) were removed. She was about 20 then, so maybe the body heals quicker.
    How is your dad, BooBear?
She just went up to give hay to the horses, and had trouble staying up on her feet thru the brick patio. It must be very slippery out there!

About to NAP! I did things today. So proud of myself. Made it to the corner and back. Took a picture of the river next to the house. Will attach. Then I covered the Honda with a tarp blankie.

Amazing. So I finally get over the sedatives they give me last week and will have more coming up. Carpola.

Zoë has decided we WILL NOT have an ice storm. We will see how that decision does . . snicker

About the Hilltowns and outside lights. I don’t know if anyone else does this, but many of us live the ouside Christmas lights on through February. It is a long dark hall up the windy roads in the pitch black. The lights are cheerful and you can tell where you are.

  39. Masquers

Siber: I hope she only has the “regular” flu and not the swine variety. Scott came over last Friday, with remnants of some kind of bug, carrying hand sanitizer. So far, so good. Mom has not caught it…yet…but is taking Airborne just in case.
Note to Riö: we do listen.
Melanie: The river looks frozen. Brrr!
We think it is a great idea to keep the outside lights up. Some folks do it around here as well.

  40. Macy's mom
    2:35 pm on January 5th, 2014

N1H1 is the prevalent bad bug in Texas right now. It was included in this year’s vaccine.

Mr. just came in from the porch and found something he ordered for our anniversary next Friday. Has anyone ever had Harry and David pears? Nom, nom, nom….

  41. Herd of Hounds
    2:46 pm on January 5th, 2014

Henry and David pears are yummy!

  42. Masquers
    2:48 pm on January 5th, 2014

Macy’s Mom: No pears, but one year we received a Harry & David’s chicken pot pie for Christmas. It was delish!
Funny note, and thinking of B when writing this, our friend who sent the gift said she was bombarded with H&D emails for a long time after that.
Does the current vaccination include protection against all known strains of the virus? My mom has opted not to get the shot after coming down with a very bad case of the flu in spite of it. That was back in her twenties and she has not regretted doing so.

  43. Masquers

We never heard of Harry and David.
Mom and Pop always get the flu shot. Pop has no choice, since he works at a hospital, but Mom is a big believer. However, every year is a crap shoot if those who develop it guessed correctly on the strain that will be hitting that year.

I told this story before, but one time I caught a baby possum, shook it till I thought it was a goner, then left it for Barb to admire. She noticed that the light had not gone out of its eyes, so she picked it up and put it on the other side of the fence. Half hour later it wandered away.

O’Howlers, Molly’s Mom and my Mommy eat a lot of eggs. We think they are nature’s perfect food. Ours are expensive because they’re not from the factory type of eggs. They come from walking around chickens and they cost much more. You are getting them sort of for free.

  109. Diane C.
    10:11 pm on January 5th, 2014

Is the egg discussion here anything to do with “Egg Day” (which is still a mystery to me)?
Miss Pretty intimidated a possum on two different occasions, and they were the same size. She backed the possum into a corner while s/he sat and snarled. Pretty seemed content to go no farther plus I created a diversion (with a bucket of water) and the possum escaped. It’s too bad the teeth make them so unattractive, as they only have that subterfuge thing to protect themselves…

Diane, we believe that Egg Day came from the Oley Howlers. It is their word for Sunday because special breakfasts with eggs appear. Some of us have taken it to heart and “spoil” our 4 legged partners with some type of egg each Sunday. There might be more but we don’t know.

  112. Siber-H

HOH, Ground Hog Day…I doubt if the NFL even gave it any thought.

I suppose I am the only dog on this blog that lives where there are no possums.

Diane, The eggs discussed on the blog have nothing to do with Egg Day, which is Sunday and a seperate issue. Of course, now that the Howlers folks have their own chickens, they are eating some of their own home grown eggs on Egg Day You should have been around for the lengthy and detailed discussions about chickens. Diane, we always get an egg on top of our kibble on Sunday mornings. We love Sunday mornings. Mom finally got tired of having to find new places to get her eggs, because every time she found a new source, those chickies would stop producing or get pounced on by a fox. So she got us our very own chickies. Only now there are so many eggs, and these eggs are so good, that she and Pop keep eating them (and feeding them to us us us).

The whole state of Minnesota has no school tomorrow per our governor. Sniff. I remember going to the University when the wind chill was 68 degrees below zero. Sometime in the late 1960’s. They didn’t close the U. then and they say they won’t tomorrow also.

    Here is tonight’s forecast.
    “Bitterly cold.
    Partly to mostly cloudy.
Dangerous wind chills as low as -50F. High -13F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph”

    News from the Quilt:
Thanks to the many visits of Smoochers, some bearing hot wings, and having had Tenzing, the Ultimate Pillow, we are pleased to announce that Mama’s fever broke tonight. She says that she will most likely need to whine about feeling tired for a few more days, but since she has been sleeping so much for the last four, we don’t see how.
Her ribs hurt from sneezing so much, and she has no voice at all, but now she is on the “getting over it” side of things instead of the “coming down with it”, so we think she will be fine.

One thing that is nice is you can see how people have reviewed the roof gutters that they
have and be able to avoid some of the pit falls that can happen with cheep or poorly
made roof gutters. Among this is the metal roof which in the
earlier years is one of the high priced roofing products used in America and in Europe.
To add insult to injury, the roofing contractor that would put his workers up on your
roof without insurance is the same contractor that would probably ignore most safety requirements.
