Chetspeak on Sunday
The door opened. Surprise! There was the Hawaiian shirt dude. Bernie: the name came to me at once. We were going to take him down? I wasn’t sure I wanted to do that. Then I caught the first lovely whiff of him and was sure I couldn’t. His eyes – very interesting eyes, full of both shadows and light – went to Rick, me, and back to Rick.
“Rick?” he said. “Something up?”
“No,” Rick said. “I mean not really.” He gestured toward me. “Remember, um, Butch, here?”
“This is Chet,” Bernie said. “Butch is the lazy one.”
“Chet, right,” said Rick. “Anyway, maybe you could do me a little favor.”
“Like what?”
“Turns out that Chet washed out of the program.”
“He did?”
“Flunked the leaping test.”
Bernie gave me another look, maybe the strangest look I’ve ever gotten from a human: he seemed to see inside me. “That’s weird.”
“Bobby sort of predicted it, actually. Which is where the favor comes in. He tried to drop the dog off at the pound but they were closed. So Bobby needs someone to board him for the night, and I thought of you.”

Ah, the very beginning! C & B had no idea where that little meet and greet would take them. Thank Dog for Rick. I for one am glad his name was Chet and not Butch!
Morning all. And Happy Sunday.
T & G, Are you getting hit with mega snow again this morning?
8:40 am on February 15th, 2015
Good morning! Happy Egg Day!
Chet, the story of you and Bernie becoming partners is our most favorite valentine story yet.
8:50 am on February 15th, 2015
Good morning, B&M&L and O’H and everyone! That is probably our favorite Chetspeak of all time! And today is a sunny Sunday here (for a few hours anyway) and Egg Day. Life is good! There were so many great fotos yesterday, way more than 2. 16*F here and we may get some of that white shiitake tonight or tomorrow. If we do, the ice chest is ready and waiting to send it to Alaska just for our Snowhook friends 🙂
Have a sunny or snowy or shadowy or supurb Sunday.

It is 4 degrees, with wind chills in the -30s. Mom still has not opened up the chicken coop.
When Pop drove out our lane for the newspaper earlier, there was a car that slid on the ice, thru a stop sign that he couldn’t see because of the blowing snow, and up into a snow bank. The front-end of the car was pretty messed up. Pop talked to the driver, who said he had been sitting in his car for an hour. He had a phone, and he has AAA, yet he was sitting there, waiting for a plow to come along and get him off the ice. He said he lives an hour away. Pop thinks that the reason he was not calling anyone is that he was somewhere he was not supposed to be.

A cat was involved….
The wind chill is minus 30 here and our high today will be 5. The sun is shining brightly so it doesn’t look that cold. I saw on tv that Boston airport is closed. Yark! I hope all is well for Spence et al.
Good morning all.
9:43 am on February 15th, 2015
All of the pictures from yesterday are wonderful.
Rio: I think the word you were looking for is “antithesis.” And I love Rebecca’s images from Dirty Dancing.
Zoe: I’m glad your getting Dan the Newf puppy.
9:59 am on February 15th, 2015
It’s -7 degrees with -35 wind chill. We are not going out. Sam’s Mom is having her usual family Valentine’s dinner but we’re not going to try to drive. It’s dangerous out there.
10:03 am on February 15th, 2015
So…it’s cold. Really cold. Damn cold. Two more weeks until Hilda gets here. Looks like it’s Hilda, that’s what the breeder’s calling her too. Two more weeks. And Melanie’s doing better every day, so hopefully home soon…we should find out something tomorrow? Maybe? And we’ve a houseful of in-laws.
So I had occasion to be rereading C&B books, and…there was a flashback scene in one of them, though I can’t remember whether it was “Thereby Hangs a Tail” or “To Fetch A Thief”. But it hinted at a very, very different origin story. Anyone?
10:04 am on February 15th, 2015
Wise decision, MP&LL’s Mom.
Maggie, ask Barb if we must open the chicken coops? It is still only 5.7 with negative wind chills.
10:05 am on February 15th, 2015
Buddy, Chet was a puppy in a drug house, before the cops rescued him.

10:08 am on February 15th, 2015
True. I’ll have to find the specific reference, but it was a very different Chet and Bernie meeting. Or seemed like.
10:11 am on February 15th, 2015
No, I’m fairly certain it was “To Fetch A Thief”. I think sometime during when C&B got separated and Chet was turned over to Jocko. When he got knocked out the one time.
10:20 am on February 15th, 2015
I don’t remember that scene Buddy.
Howlers, no I would not open it. They will not go out when it is that cold anyway. Barb had a little milk house electrical heater that she ran when it got this cold. It had a safety feature that would turn it off if it got knocked over, but she still elevated it and had it away from any combustibles. It was about $30.00 from Farm and Fleet, and it worked really well. It would bring the temp up 15 to 20 degrees in a 100 sq foot coop.
10:24 am on February 15th, 2015
Brrrr, shiver, grump.
Yes, we are buried in snow AGAIN! And they tell us another storm is headed this way. Maybe the start of Iditarod could be in our backyard.
(Then again, it may be that he’ll IS freezing over. After all, Bee made another grammatical error. tee hee)
10:26 am on February 15th, 2015
What a Morning already! B, of all Plunderers, made a Grammatical Error (using your instead of you’re) and Buddy did a Double Dawson.
Knocked out? What’s this about Chet getting Knocked Out?
(my memory is so unreliable).

Time for the your vs. you’re lecture!
10:33 am on February 15th, 2015
Poor B. I’m sure it was the otter-cork and not the foe paw. Then again she and Charlie may have had a little too much fine wine celebrating yesterday.
10:34 am on February 15th, 2015
Damit! That was me, not BSD!
10:38 am on February 15th, 2015
Now I have to find this scene. Heh…
10:39 am on February 15th, 2015
It is 18 F (whatever that means) in our backyard. Mom thinks I am cold because I have been playing in the wading poot. I laugh at cold and say,”Mom, I’m a Newfie!” Wish she could understand me, but she does play “super puppy” with a towel when I come in so I get lots of love. Just don’t let her see me lying in the sun from the living room window between ice raids.
10:42 am on February 15th, 2015
Speaking of cold…we know what youse mean…it’s only a 43 chilly degrees here this morning, with a high of 54 expected. snicker.
At this rate the first mowing appointment will have to be postponed until March.
10:48 am on February 15th, 2015
Thanks, Barb. We do have red heatlamos in the coops. The sun is shining brightly in the big coop now, so we unplugged that one. We can leave Fern’s on. We will keep their doors closed.
10:53 am on February 15th, 2015
Darah, we can relate. Right now, we are busy proving a point. The point being: We are Siberian! 6 degrees? -13 wind chill? We scoff!

11:10 am on February 15th, 2015
“Flunked the leaping test.” I’m laughing, Chet. As if!
Buddy and Leno: Now you’ve made me curious. Unfortunately, my memory is bad.
Sorry for sending that cold weather to all youse but I was tired of being cooped up inside like a chicken. Now we are 9 degrees F. and that seems downright balmy.
11:27 am on February 15th, 2015
Dawson, 9? Wow we are a whole 10 degrees warmer than you! Our b i l who lives in Niles, MI is at 1*F right now and still getting lake effect snow. What a lucky guy 🙂
11:44 am on February 15th, 2015
I hate it when that happens….

I hope Buddy can find the part he’s referring to because now I’m curious.

12:19 pm on February 15th, 2015
Barb?
I have a question about the George Foreman grill. I know it will cook hamburgers, but will it also cook steak and pork chops?
I don’t care about chicken because I don’t like chicken.
How difficult is it to cleanup?
12:28 pm on February 15th, 2015
Thank you, Siber Maw.
12:30 pm on February 15th, 2015
Checking out B’s link (thanks!) to the Westminster Dog Show, we note that we are listed, along with The German Shepard Dog, under The Herding Breeds. What’s up with that?
Herding?? I don’t think so! Unless you are referring to Perps.
Heh, heh.
Buddy: Happy to hear your Melanie is Steadily Improving.
Hi, Siber-H’s Mom. That is very Nice Weather you are having.
12:41 pm on February 15th, 2015
Bear, Several years ago or even longer than that the American Kennel Club put GSDs in the Herding group. I thought it was strange at the time and I still think it is strange.
Fern, lol You are welcome
12:45 pm on February 15th, 2015
Bear, Both the GSD and the Malinois originated as sheep herding dogs. The Malinois is also called a Belgian Shepherd. Both are used more as working dogs today rather than herding.
12:57 pm on February 15th, 2015
Siber-H’s Mom: Strange indeed, since many of us are the most Excellent Partners of the Police.
Barb,Magpie,Lucy: Belgian Shepard. Yes, that’s me.
BTW: We can’t wait to show you that Cool Member of the Nation Within we were talking about at last year’s show.

The Foreman does steaks and pork chops very nicely. Also grilled cheese, although it makes those pretty flat. Easy enough to clean, although I think I’d like to get one of the models that has removable grill plates. They have those now.
I still haven’t found that section. It’s a very short passage, kind of a flashback. Sigh.
1:31 pm on February 15th, 2015
Buddy&Leno&Hilda: Don’t you just hate it when that happens!
Speaking of Flashbacks…Nana cannot find her copy of A Cat Was Involved…Anywhere! A Paw Printed Copy no less!
Last Time it was seen was during that unfortunate time in 2013.
So this morning Her Heart did a little dance thinking it was for sale. Alas, this is not the case. It is the ebook version that is available instead. {{sigh}}
1:33 pm on February 15th, 2015
Aha! Found it! Check the very beginning of Chapter 25 of “Thief”.
1:37 pm on February 15th, 2015
To tell you the truth, I like the redo better than the flashback.
1:44 pm on February 15th, 2015
Siber’s Mom, Buddy is right about the George Foreman grill. We have done steaks and chops on it, but it seems to work better with boneless cuts. It cleaned up pretty easily, but we would agree that the newer models with removable plates would be a big improvement. Also, keep in mind that you are going to have a shortened cooking time, because both sides are cooking at once. In the beginning we over cooked the meat. I think it does a great job – meat is really good, and much easier than broiling in the oven, which as we said before, we never do.
1:52 pm on February 15th, 2015
Thank you Buddy and Barb. I am probably working up to buying one.
1:57 pm on February 15th, 2015
Well, in a few minutes we are leaving for Sammy’s house. Storm or no snowstorm, they talked me into it. Of course the lobster might have had something to do with it.
2:31 pm on February 15th, 2015
Siber’s Mom: I am more successful cleaning my grill when it is still hot–I wipe it down with folded layers of paper towels. Then once I’ve eaten and the grill is cool, I clean it with a hot, soapy sponge and wipe it down again.
Good day all. Tired even though I slept many hours. Must be all the furniture moving and painting I’ve been doing.

C.Hobbit, Good idea. I always clean my outdoor grill when it is hot so what you are saying makes good sense.
Mollypop’s Mom, I agree with Rio, Yeep, or in my case, Yark

Masquers — We are not getting much snow from Neptune, although we did have an inch or so last night and are looking at a couple of inches tomorrow, but it sure is cold, cold, cold, with serious wind chill (wind chill temp this morning was -13). Only getting shorter walks today but dad did brave the elements for some good frisbee in the back yard earlier today.
And Scout, while we don’t have the white canyons that you are having (which sound really cool to me), it isn’t quite spring yet either. There actually is starting to be some serious ice on the Potomac and it does not appear as though temperatures will get above freezing this entire week.
And thanks to B for the heads up on the Westminster ability competition. I got to watch a fair amount including seeing Keebler the Corgi win for the small dog (12 inch) competition.
3:00 pm on February 15th, 2015
Mpop’s and Loulou’s Mom: Yikes! I was happy you were staying home. Drive safe. Enjoy the lobster.
Buddy & Leno: Hooray for Melanie and Hildagard!
I don’t know what to say about Chapter 25 except it is Chet narrating. I’ve heard tell that he is an “unreliable narrator” and his memory is suspect.

3:45 pm on February 15th, 2015
Just catching up again. We have been shoveling. Again. sigh.
Foreman grills. We just treated ourselves to one, and we love it! It has temp control, and very easily removable grill plates. We have cooked all kinds of food, from tuna steaks to pork chops to you name it. If we had known, we would have gotten one much sooner.
We missed the agility show, but thrilled the Corgi won. Now if the Corgi can just go Best In Show at Westminster, we will be soooo happy.
3:50 pm on February 15th, 2015
Buddy, we read it, and it is the same beginning story for Chet, but nothing about Rick dropping him off, huh? We think you deserve some sort of prize from SQPA.
4:00 pm on February 15th, 2015
HOH: The “unreliable narrator” did not come from me but from either Spence himself on one of his “appearances” or from a review on the blog or somewhere. I liked that description and it stuck in my mind.
The Westminster shows are never on up here when they are on down there. I usually get them a day or two after.
4:31 pm on February 15th, 2015
Had a visit from our Newf to be and his breeders. Mac took it with his usual calm making it clear but nicely, that he did not like being humped. The breeders and training the 20 month old as he did not get much at his old home.. I, too, am getting trained..it’s been while .
He has a sweet face, nice body, and loves the snow. They asked me last week what I’d like to call him since none of us liked his former name. His name now is Dan.
I am so lucky! Love to all

Awww – Mac is going to be such a good “uncle” to the NewBee Newfie.
We can’t wait to meet him. And we will take pictures if none have been posted by then.
4:41 pm on February 15th, 2015
My mastery if the computer is fading Anyhow, we are in the process of getting another Newf. My neighbor got us in touch with a breeder he knows and I think he must have said a lot of nice things about us because a 20 month old Newf who any breeder would be happy to own will soon be ours, He met Mac today and while Mac made it clear that humping is not something he tolerates, he seems to like the kid.
The pup needs training and the breeder is doing that and he’s good. The pup’s parents divorced and …so I met him last week and I think that with help on the training we will do fine .Next Sunday he is coming with his litter mate and we are all going for a walk. His name is now Dan.
4:43 pm on February 15th, 2015
Zoe, we love your name for the new Danny Boy. He sounds like a great guy.

5:05 pm on February 15th, 2015
Zoe I am excited for Dan to be able to move in with you. He will be a wonderful addition to your family. I bet he is a handsome boy.
T&G, Thanks for your report on the Foreman Grill. I am going to buy one.
This is the most suspenseful Yukon Quest I have suffered through.
5:19 pm on February 15th, 2015
The Quest is fantastic this year! Dan the new Newf is bound to be a hoot. And TY for the Foreman grill info as we have thought about one but were waiting to hear from an owner.
6:08 pm on February 15th, 2015
We have done tuna and salmon on our Foreman too. The steaks and pork chops are great too, just do better if they are boneless. The top presses down more evenly if there is no bone in the meat. However, we think bone-in pork chops are much tastier, either center cut or rib chops.
Tonight we are having beef short ribs that have been cooking since 3:30. Seared in bacon grease and olive oil and then covered with onion, shallots, carrots and red wine and beef broth with a dollop of tomato paste. Wish I had some corn meal to make polenta, but will have to settle for mashed potatoes.
6:19 pm on February 15th, 2015
We’re back home. The drive was no problem since the roads were dry. The temp was below zero but there was no blowing snow. I’m glad I went, the lobster was great!

Rio, shhhh. Don’t worry. Fern is fine, but what she doesn’t know can’t hurt. Heh!
8:26 pm on February 15th, 2015
Barb, Maggie and Lucy – that evil woman is abandoning us forever! She is cruel and heartless and is leaving us all alone (except for Gramp) for way more than two days. She made some weak excuses about travel days, and then having enough time to drive around and see all the relatives, blah, blah, blah. You would think that by now she would know where her real priorities are – cuddling US, US, US!
We just KNOW that she is only going for the green chili stew.
Howlers – chicken wine? yuck…. How long does it have to ferment?
8:26 pm on February 15th, 2015
O’Howlers, i’m just watching SNL’s special. Is your chicken wine anything like the Bassomatic?
8:33 pm on February 15th, 2015

Mpop’s and LL’s Mom, The Bassomatic! That was one of the funniest sketches I have ever seen on SNL!

ML: Good one!
Brent Sass has 12 dogs and Allen Moore has 13 dogs. They are currently climbing almost straight up a mountain about 10 miles apart.
Mike Ellis is resting at Slaven’s Roadhouse in 8th place.

I have been late the last few days. All I seem able to do is play catch up at night. I am for Team Sadie. Sorry Hobbit.
Don’t tell her but tomorrow morning we will be taking AbbietheKitty out in the cold to go to the V E T S. She has developed feline acne. Yuck. We tried to treat it with baby shampoo and Neosporin but it didn’t seem to make any difference. I suspect she will get antibiotics and the cone of shame but do not know for sure.
Soon we will take Keiko in for her coming of age ceremony. Poor little kitty is still so tiny.
My favorite picture from yesterday was Teddy and Zeta sharing a stick. What a great picture!
Off to do my taking care of Dad chores. Nighty noodle to all yoodle And to LizF in OZ, good morning

Hello All,
I just wanted to take a minute and update everyone on the goings on…
First and foremost we’ve been working on drop bags. Believe it or not moving 1600 pounds of food and gear across the state is not as complicated as it sounds. Changing plans mid stream though with the route change did cause some mental gymnastics however. None the less, the trailer is loaded and just about ready to go and I am glad that chore is almost done. Most of the gear has been living in our house for the last month.
The teams are doing well though it’s caused me some stress. I’ve switched three of my dogs to Phil’s team to make up for injured dogs on his team. They all seem to be doing better but it thinned the ranks and puts me with just 17 dogs right now which includes Twig. I mention Twig because Phil started running her this fall but she’s had bad feet most of the season. I started some more intensive rehabilitation on her and she is making a big improvement. Largely this is her living in the house right now and keeping her feet dry. If you all could see fit to keep her in your thoughts to make the team this season I would very much appreciate it. She’s quite a special dog to me.
In other news we do blood tests and EKG tests tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing if the new training regiment and supplement schedule the team is on makes a difference in the blood chemistry.
And finally because Rebecca just came in with a cheeseburger for me and Twig is trying to eat it… Thank you for your support and sponsorship. I appreciate this more than all of you know.
All the best.
AJ

Sad news posted by the Knik 200 Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race 1 hour ago:
George Attla, the legendary sled dog racer, has passed away. The sport has lost one of its heroes. Rest in peace, George. http://attlamakingofachampion.com/

AJ: Thank you so much for your latest report.
You and Rebecca work so hard to make everything come together. The Plunderers are honored that Snowhook is (as Spence would say) “our team”.
And I don’t know if you know this or not, but Twig just happens to be one of our favorites too.
She will definitely be in our good thoughts and prayers to make the team this year.
All she needs right now is that cheeseburger!

We just read about George Attla’s passing on facebook. Sad.
AJ, thanks for the update. We are worried for Twig, but we will keep her in our thoughts. We are also concerned that you had to thin the ranks of your team.
