Chetspeak on Sunday

“I’m Autumn,” the young woman said, closing the door.

“That’s a nice name,” Bernie said.

“I found it online,” Autumn said.

“Oh,” said Bernie.

She looked at me. “Is this Chet? Livia asked me if he was with you.”

“Yup,” Bernie said.

“Can I pat him?”

“He hates that.”

“You’re joking right?”

Of course he was. Bernie’s quite the joker at times, not always the right ones. But in this case everything worked out fine. Autumn turned out to be an excellent patter. The young ladies in houses of ill-repute were always excellent patters, although why I wasn’t sure. What the whole business was about, meaning what was actually for sale – for example, Max’s Memphis Ribs sold ribs – remained a mystery to me.

Good morning! Happy Egg Day! We love how Chet gets those nice pats from those ladies. He is so pure and simple…no judgement, other than rating their patting abilities. Humans could learn a thing or two from Members of the Nation in that regard.
HOH’s maw was worrit about us, because we have not been posting so much. Truthfully, once Spring springs, we are hard-working, and Mom puts away the iPaw. By the time we finally come back indoors, we are famished, and after we eat, we crash. We have been trying to post a line or two from time to time, so youse wouldn’t worry, but for some reason Sharon was still worrit. So just so youse know, it is going up to 80 today, and we have to go coach the ‘rents and those horses, and then get a big fire started, and then put the finishing touches on our outdoor lounging/eating/drinking areas. We are not much for the indoors in this here family.

Rio, we agree completely with all you said about The Giant and the A-Team’s ability to persevere through all of the obstacles and hurts and terror of this year’s race. When we learned of all of those mushers scratching, including some longtime top finishers, we never doubted Our Team’s will to not just survive, but to Finish. We are very proud to be a Snowhook Groupie, and even prouder to call AJ and Rebecca and all of the Snowhook dogs “Friend”.

Good morning all. Happy Sunday and Egg Day. The grass has greened up and the first daffodil is going to bloom. Warm and rainy today, but like Bee, we could get some snow tomorrow and Tuesday. Will it ever end?

Howlers, your garden beds looked great. Did you ever decide to plant in the extra space?

It is supposed to rain, and get cooler here on Tuesday/Wednesday, with the possibility of a little snow. That is a good thing. We call it the Onion Snow.
What we have planted so far is potatoes, onions, and lettuce. The onions are around the outside of the lettuce bed, like Barb and Staff suggested. We are a little worried about water for them, with the way we run our soaker hoses. We will be planting zucchini next to the taters, and beans and peppers and tomatoes next month.

Some of the work done yesterday was those red stones we putdown on the paths around the raised beds. On the photo we posted yesterday, it was not yet complete. You can see the weed barrier laid down underneath the stones. They are hoping for a much neater look to the garden this year. We’ll see how that works out.
They are even planning to string the tomatoes this time. And they will try to sucker them, which is what we think they are for all of the work they do on their non-work days.

  9. Barb & Maggie
    9:45 am on April 13th, 2014

Sounds great, Howlers. We also sucker the tomatoes, at least the first half of the season. That creates a stronger main stem, and less foliage. We are not sure what you mean by stringing the tomatoes. We use large sturdy cages which we found at Farm and Fleet. They cost about $7.00 each, but are the only ones we have found that are big and heavy enough to support those heirloom plants.

I don’t think onions need a lot of water, so I wouldn’t worry about it. You will be picking half of them for green onions, before the season gets really hot, so you should be fine. Soaker hoses are good for plants that put down deep roots.

Now, back outside for a bit before the rain comes back and keeps us in all afternoon.

Yes dagnabbit, snow. This is Wednesdays forecast from NOAA

“A chance of snow before 9am, then a chance of rain and snow between 9am and 10am, then a chance of rain after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. East wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.”

What does it mean to “sucker” a tomato plant?

  14. Staff
    10:31 am on April 13th, 2014

O’Howlers that was the funniest tomato video I have seen in a long time. I do believe that ‘spousal unit’ has a screw loose. Either that or a desperate attachment to his ax.

  15. Herd of Hounds
    10:35 am on April 13th, 2014

Staff, we are with you, only problemo? Acts just like the DDD here.

  16. Barb & Maggie
    12:01 pm on April 13th, 2014

I think a post-pounder would be safer for the “spousal unit”. He must have a death wish, using an ax while standing on a ladder!

The stringing technique looked nifty but more work than our heavy duty cages. Since Barb doesn’t have a spousal unit and since our raised beds are 2 feet high, I think we will stick with the old method.

Bee, Suckering is removing the little shoots that grow in between the main stem and the branch. If you don’t take those off you get a very bushy plant that puts a lot of energy into foliage rather than growing the tomatoes.

Spence: Thanks for the Chetspeak. How did you come up with Autumn’s name?

O’Howlers: I’m with you on being outside as the weather warms up. Today it is going up to 13! (mid 50’s). I got a some belly laughs out of that video. Your spousal unit did a great job on your garden area. I think he did not use an axe!

The man who lives in this house brought home many daffodils and tulips last Autumn (heh!) and I planted a long strip of them along with lavender along the driveway. I see the two yards closest to the sidewalk are snow free so I will start looking for shoots (the rest of the row is still under 2 feet of snow). I do not have high hopes of the lavender making it through the winter but my hopes are alive for the bulbs.

Kat: I see you are willing to “take one for the team”. Good dog!

    HOH: 80’s!!!

Hello Everyone–Is next Sunday going to be a “Double-egg Day”?
Macy’s Mom (that’s ML AND Mary Lou, right?)–Thank you for the beautiful pictures. I’m glad it was a magical day for you and your family–that’s how it’s supposed to work, I think…
HOH–He could stop anytime! (Now I get it…)Yikes.

On my way to wishing you all a wonderful Sunday, here’s something I copied from another site today:

“The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creatures that cannot.”

Oh–B. Stover–could that have been “succour” a tomato plant?

And while I’m at it, does anyone have ideas about reviving a baby rose, once potted, possibly overwatered, and now (I hope) about to take up residence in a larger pot and very much trimmed back?

  20. O'Howlers
    12:23 pm on April 13th, 2014

Diane, very true quote from one of our favorites.
Double Egg Day! Heh he! That took us a while, but now that we get it, we like it.
Dawson, we want to see those flowers when they come up. We are amazed to see daffodils and lilies and hyacinth coming up here, because we forgot we even planted them. Autumn seems like forever ago.
Barb, we use heavy cages, but we still end up with tomato plants that are too bushy and heavy, and have to be tied. We end up missing out on lots of tomatoes. Of course, we did not know about suckering. We still need to re-watch videos on exactly how and what to sucker.
That video is a hoot, isn’t it? But it does do a good job of explaiming the stringing technique. We have old clothes racks from before we had a closet in this here house, and we are thinking of using those to string to.
Everybody stop worrying about snow. We need an onion snow before we can trust that Spring has sprung.

And, Mom’s Annie is about as perfect a horse as ever lived, even after 4 months of no work.

If you have a photo of you in your new outfit, we’d love to see it. Luna is still considering Wyatt’s request to adopt you as his very own.

For some reason, and we’re not sure why, our white fur is pink today. It started late last night when we read Rio’s post about the Giant and the team. My Lady says we are pink because we are blushing. It’s hard to tell if the Giant is blushing because his beard is already red. You honor us and humble us. We are proud to be ‘your’ team.

Today he picked up a Rainbow playground set that he bought used from a bike customer. They run from $4,000 to about $8,000. I am sure you have see them – they are the big wood sets that people buy for their spoiled kids today. Anyway, he bought it for $350 and a few bike accessories. He had to disassemble it, haul it home in four truck loads, and now will reassemble it in their back yard and then re-stain it. It will look like new when he is done.

ML, you can show up on my porch any time. I can give you a brief respite if you need it.

On HGTV’s Living Alaska right now, it’s about the Berrington twins moving to Alaska with the dogs! Pretty cool that we know who they are!

ML, poor Angie. That is really low of her boyfriend. Cut him lose, Angie. He has just shown you that he won’t be there for you when you need him.

The details are furry, but we are pretty sure that the sermon that accompanied our blurring of Beau to Rick’s bedside included some very specific thou-shall-nots. Among said thou-shall-nots was something about boyfriends shall not hurt Angie, thus saith the pug. The black pug never lies.

Shelves!…Who here loves shelves as much as my friend does?…snort!…I bet No One. Tonight someone found two shelves that apparently her mother took out of my other house sitting down here on a cupboard….sniff!…My friend has been too busy cleaning to notice they were gone from the house. She left them there when the other renters lived there and was going to leave them for the new family…wuffle!….I wonder why her mother took those shelves down. They are very decorative and handy to put knicky-knacks on…sniffle!

We are innocent in the case of missing shelves and any pugnapping that happened this evening.

Shelves. I love shelves too. A friend of mine drove over from North Dakota and on Saturday we went to IKEA. (Her spousal unit came along and pushed the cart) We looked at everything. Some things more than once. We saw these long but tiny little shelves in a room designed for sewing. They were about 2-3 inches deep and they had them stocked with spools of thread. When we finally found where they were stored for pickup they were advertised as plate shelves. Heh. But they are cuter than the dickens as thread shelves. We bought 4. One long one (45″) and 3 shorter ones(20″).

I posted a message to the turd-besterd on Rick’s iPaw, so it looked like it was coming from the Great Beyond. Heh-heh, be haunted ya besterd. He messaged Angie that someone called him a satanist. I MAY have said he was a sadist, but if he can’t tell the difference, tough noogies. Then she blocked him from her phone and facebook. Just sorry that his 10 year old son has to live with the hoor-monger.

Thank you all for the chance to rant. I will attempt to regain my civility tomorrow but right now, I just want a certain someone to rot in a hot hot place.

You really help it become seem to be not that hard with all your speech on the other hand uncover this condition to be actually another thing which i believe I might in no way fully grasp. It appears to be way too tricky and intensely considerable in my opinion. I am just looking ahead to your future create, I am going to make an effort to find the hang on to from it!
