Chetspeak on Sunday
“What’s your name?” he said.
The dude gazed up at Bernie. He licked his lips, something I always watch for in humans. He had a stiff, pointy tongue, kind of whitish at the tip. I made up my mind about the dude: bad news, period. Period means case closed. Our cases closed just about every time with me grabbing the perp by the pant leg. So if I snapped down with a nice toothy grip on one of those overalled legs at this very moment, did that mean the job was done and we could pick up our check and head for home?
I considered that question from many angles – actually, none – and while that was or was not going on, the dude said, “Everyone calls me Moondog.”
Whoa right there. Sometimes with humans you can’t be sure you heard right.
“Moondog?” said Bernie. Maybe he was having the same problem.

Happy Egg Day to you too, Royal Mum!
8:40 am on March 30th, 2014
Back atcha, Mama.
No eggs on the horizon today, but looking forward to bagels and lox.
Today is Sammy’s last day with us as his folks are coming back late tonight. Barb is feeling oh so sad, NOT!
Today is supposed to be 60 degrees and sunny. Neighbor, in his upper 70’s, is out already raking the lawn. Putting someone here to shame. Better get a move on.
Happy Chetspeak, Happy Egg Day and Happy Sunday everyone!
8:42 am on March 30th, 2014
Greetings Royal Mum and Bear! Happy Egg Day!
Rio! I love the movie “Easter Parade”! Hope youse guys liked it too!
Hobbit, Look at you on AJ’s sled. So when do you start training for Iditarod 2015?
MPM, Thanks for the picture of my VBFF! Did you get to see Rose of the Plunderfest puppies?
Everyone have a swell Sunday!
8:50 am on March 30th, 2014
Good morning, everyone! Wose, you did my job, a swell Sunday, we can live with that. Judi, enjoy the trip to Girdwood but don’t let Hobbit take you farther south to Whittier through the tunnel 🙁 Mom didn’t like that one bit.
8:56 am on March 30th, 2014
Good morning Chet and all.
It sounds as though CH and MPM are having an adventure. I don’t think I’d like the “airborne” part however.
I’m watching seagulls flashing white in the sky as they fly by.

Hope Hobbit took her medicine….you know….her Airborne.

Good morning plunderers, I am going to an estate sale with sewing thingys in it today. If Dawson were here she could come too, sniff, but I must go by myself. sob.

Bee, You mentioned Red Winged Blackbirds the other day. We just saw some here this week too. Another sign of spring.
Barb is going to rake the garden this afternoon and get it prepped for planting.
9:04 am on March 30th, 2014
Hello Everyone–Not only is it Egg Day, it is also Cosmos Night tonight (although I suspect I may be the only one watching).
Prayers and good thoughts for all, and thanks for yesterday’s photos.
B. Stover–Can’t do it with the Greek font in this format, but o thesauros (can’t get the accents in, either) is one of the first nouns we get in beginning Greek. Seagulls are beautiful (but try to keep from being directly underneath them…)

Good Morning All
Wose, Which Snowhook dog is in the picture of the dog and sled?
Belle Starr? It is very cute. Also love the photo of the sled with the purple ribbon.
Mollypop’s Mom…Have Fun!
10:17 am on March 30th, 2014
I usually hear redwing blackbirds before I see them. They don’t come into the garden but stay in the trees.
When seagulls go “fishing,” they do a swirling dive into the water, go underneath and then seem to fly to the surface and take off. They are beautiful and graceful birds…and I love their call.
10:18 am on March 30th, 2014
Macy, Please remind your mom to let us know who we are suppose to make the checks out to if we want to contribute to the fundraiser the Fire Department has started.
10:28 am on March 30th, 2014
Good morning, and Happy Egg Day. Today’s egg selection included one from our resident house hen.
Hobbit, you looked teensy tiny in frong of AJ on that sled, but we wanted to be there too. MPM, airborn!!! Woo Hooo!
We have been hearing red-winged blackbirds for a couple of weeks, but only saw the first one yesterday. Hurray! Maybe Spring will be arriving. Today we are under a flood watch, and it is wicked windy.
Siber, we sent that check. We just made it out to Bedford Fire Dept. – Benefit for Rick Nash
10:41 am on March 30th, 2014
Diane: Does “thesauros” mean “treasury” in Greek. For some reason you’ve reminded me of the Virginia Woolf essay, “On Not Knowing Greek” which I have to reread.
10:52 am on March 30th, 2014
Our Illinois bird book says that Red Wings are supposed be here year round, but we don’t see them in the winter.
Siber, We sent a check for Rick and made it out to “Bedford Fire Dept. Benefit Account for Rich Nash”. I think that should be OK.
11:00 am on March 30th, 2014
Thanks for the replies Howlers and Barb.
We used to have Red Winged Blackbirds winter here but they don’t anymore. They were never here in the summer. Now, they are gone, just gone.
11:01 am on March 30th, 2014
Diane, I looked up Cosmos Night on Google and couldn’t find anything that looked like something you might be talking about.
11:08 am on March 30th, 2014
Siber, You are welcome. We didn’t notice that Howlers had already answered your question.
Now to add to the confusion, Lyla and Jack are here in addition to us dogs. Barb came home from the grocery store to find a large fern tipped over in the living room. Broken glass all over, plus fern fronds and potting soil. Someone wanted to look out the window when Barb left. Her own fault.
11:24 am on March 30th, 2014
BStover: Cosmos is a tv series which features Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astronomer.
I am amazed that the house was clean when I got home. Amazed! This has never happened before.
MPM: I remember those bumps! WhoooHoooo! I was sitting in the sled and ML was riding the runners when we went over them. Oof da!
Barb&Maggie: Yeep!
11:52 am on March 30th, 2014
Dawson, great news…some one missed you.
12:01 pm on March 30th, 2014
Dawson: We Here are thinking the same thing…Someone Missed You.
12:24 pm on March 30th, 2014
Was the sleeping one Belle Starr?
B. Stover–thesauros in Gk is “treasure” (so by extension also “treasury” or “storehouse”) I seem to recall doing sentences about “guarding the treasure” and an Aesop fable about two brothers, told by their father that there was a treasure in their vineyard, whereupon they set out to dig up every square inch. When no treasure appears, we are informed that because the digging will make the vines flourish, “to ergon thesauros tois anthropois” (in Gk if you click on the link, but still w/o accents)

12:26 pm on March 30th, 2014
Dawson–Thanks. Am I the only one who sees Neil de Grasse Tyson as America’s Sweetheart (despite what he did to Pluto)?
12:28 pm on March 30th, 2014
…also, “Cosmos” airs Sunday nights (sheesh–like you couldn’t figure that out! I’m going back to bed…not ready to face the world yet. Apologies.)
12:30 pm on March 30th, 2014
DianeC: Gah. What he did to Pluto is UNFORGIVABle.
12:33 pm on March 30th, 2014
Dawson, we think that someone was scared he was going to be in trouble for the house being a mess. Mom says she always cleaned before her mom and dad returned from a trip too. Heh heh!
Mom’s lower back is hurting very bad today. She wants to go play with Annie, but is making a warm bath instead. There is no reason for that pain, unless it is the memories of MPM’s airborne bumps coming back. Pondering…
12:33 pm on March 30th, 2014
What did he do to Pluto??? Has he picked on Goofy and Daffy Duck too?
(Yes, we are just kidding).
Just so you all know, we are going up to see Zoe today. The boys, GLAD, Martha and her kids will all be there. We plan on having a big hugfest, and maybe some tears. But we will all be together.
12:36 pm on March 30th, 2014

Tupper’s Mama: Big hugs to all of them from all of us on the blog. sniff.
12:47 pm on March 30th, 2014
Tupper’s Mama, Glad you are going to see Zoe. Give her our love.
12:56 pm on March 30th, 2014
T&G Mama, please hug my Zoe for me me me! If I were there, I would climb up on her lap and smooch her endlessly, but as Momma refuses to drive me up there in the rain (or snow or ice), you will have to fill in for me. Thank you.
12:58 pm on March 30th, 2014
Maggie, we think that your Barb was not refreshing last weekend when we posted about our visit (o.k. the ‘rents’ visit) to Bendy Brook Farm to buy pork and chicken. They have so far eaten one pork roast, bacon, sausage, and last night was roast chicken (yes, Fern was squawking loudly from the laundry room).
Bendy Brook is a mile or two from our farm!!! The meat is wonderful!

1:02 pm on March 30th, 2014
Again for Barb, as well as all youse other gardeners. We have not yet planted anything in our garden because of the awful weather. We normally plant lettuce and potatoes and onions on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, but there was still snow in the forecast then. And now, our place is water-logged. Anyways, we are asking for some suggetions. We have 4 beds (4×8 each). One bed will be all loose leaf lettuce which we love. One bed will be divided between potatoes and onions. One plant, to be planted much later in the season, will be tomatoes.
We also must plant one or two pepper plants. What else should we/can we plant in that bed with the peppers? Any good ideas?
1:24 pm on March 30th, 2014
Tupper’s Mama–Same wishes from me, travel safely.
BSD–He DID apologize for it on an episode of Big Bang Theory…
HOH–Hah! I get it! (Although the Cosmos show does feature a weird-looking spacecraft that looks more like a lighter or hand-cranked flashlight than anything else, so there is a cartoonish element…)
1:31 pm on March 30th, 2014
What did Neil de Grasse Tyson (I’ve never heard of him before) do to Pluto? (I’m not kidding.)
1:47 pm on March 30th, 2014
Bee, he is an astrophysicist, and we think he is the dude that decided Pluto is not a planet.
1:48 pm on March 30th, 2014
Howlers, Yes we did indeed miss the comment about Bendy Brook Farm last week. We just checked out the site and it looks like a great source for natural meat products, as well as a lovely farm. Not sure if we would try the goat, but the other products look wonderful.
Garden ideas – we always plant the onion sets (buy them in packages of 100 for about $2.00) around the perimeter of the beds. They don’t take up much room that way, and we pick every other one for green onions, leaving the others for dry onions.
Green beans give you the best bang for your buck of any veggie, in my opinion. If you don’t have a trellis, stick with the bush beans, and plant several rows 15-18″ apart. Plant every 2 weeks and you will get an extended season. If you only do a couple of peppers you will have room for about 4 rows of beans. They are easy to grow, and will produce all season, if you keep them picked. Contender, Top Crop, Blue Lake bush, Provider are all good stringless bush varieties. We are also going to try a row of fava Italian bush from Staff this year. Plus we do a planting of climbing pole beans, planted around the outside of a tall tomato cage. They produce even more than the bush varieties.
So if you plant the onions around the perimeters, that leaves half a 4 x 8 bed free. We would suggest a row or two of beets. You can pick a few of the greens to add to your salads, and the beets can be pulled all summer. The ones you harvest in the fall will keep in the refrigerator all winter. A couple basil plants would be nice two, especially as a pairing with the tomatoes.
Oh, and don’t forget spinach – you can add a row into your lettuce bed. Likes early, cool weather, just like the lettuce.
1:51 pm on March 30th, 2014
Thank you Howlers.
1:52 pm on March 30th, 2014
Howlers, Kale is another one you can put in as soon as the soil can be worked. Double crop it, with some later lettuce or spinach. We are also doing a planting of early snow peas, planted around a tomato cage, and then replanted with the pole beans in 2 months.
1:54 pm on March 30th, 2014
Hmmmm.
I mis-spoke. Tyson is not an astronomer but an astro physicist. http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2010/03/neil_degrasse_tyson_on_why_plu.html

O’Howlers: How about a zucchini plant? Yum!
I just filled many little pots with dirt. Flowers will be planted.
2:09 pm on March 30th, 2014
Howlers – now that you have your garden all planned, ask you mom to check her SDD.
2:13 pm on March 30th, 2014
Siber-H and Diane: Yes, that sleeping dog is my VBFF, Belle Starr.
Royal Mum: Please send big hugs and love to Zoe and her family.
2:13 pm on March 30th, 2014
Thanks Barb and Dawson. Zucchini and summer squash are favorites at this household, but they do take up real estate and produce a lot. That’s why we didn’t plant them the past two years. But we are contemplating them again this year. Beans are hard to keep up with, but we never thought about planting them around a tomato cage. And we weren’t sure if we could plant them in the same bed with the peppers.
Thanks to both of you!
2:29 pm on March 30th, 2014
Tupper, Mom checked and responded.
2:31 pm on March 30th, 2014
I don’t think there is any problem with putting beans and peppers side by side. We too love zucchini, but may just get ours from Jessica, as it takes up a lot of space as you said. Last year we planted 2 in a container, and almost all the fruits rotted with an end rot type problem. We will not try them in a container again.
Hugs to Zoe from us too. And to the rest of the family. BTW, that picture of Our Friend as a two year old was just so precious.
Back out to the garden. We are planting some onions, peas, kale and the garlic chive seeds from Staff.
3:59 pm on March 30th, 2014
For something new and entirely different, it is now snowing here in the Nation’s Capitol. Hope to post some more Teddy/Zeta photos next week, including one entitled Puppies in the Mist.
4:12 pm on March 30th, 2014
Teddy, can I please come visit you you you?
4:13 pm on March 30th, 2014
T&G’s Mama: Hugs all around for Melanie’s family today. Double hugs for YSAS and OTAS and Zoe.
4:15 pm on March 30th, 2014
I too like to plant my onion sets around the edge of the raised bed. And I pull every other one as I need them so the ones in between have more room to grow. I like to plant basil and lemon thyme and parsley and then go out and cut them as I need them for my cooking.I always have regular ([purple) and garlic chives (white) in the garden also. The purple blooms in the spring early and the garlic chives bloom in late August and September.
Last year I planted two rows of beets and two rows of the Italian Green Beans also. We planted the lettuce around the edge of the raised tomato bed and the carrots were on one side of that bed also. The carrots have to be on the sunny side or the tomatoes grow up and shade them too much. The lettuce I put on the west side of the raised bed so they get the afternoon sun. We put in two crops of lettuce. One early and one a little later.
We don’t plant until after the 21st of May and the second week of June isn’t too late to plant in our zone.
Ah memories. This is July 2013.
4:16 pm on March 30th, 2014
Head bumps to all of Melanie’s family and friends that will be gathered today.
4:18 pm on March 30th, 2014
And dainty licks, too.
4:38 pm on March 30th, 2014
Kat, Can you blur over to my place so I can see Teddy too?
4:41 pm on March 30th, 2014
Staff, that is a beautiful garden. Barb’s is just practical, not a piece of artwork as yours is. We are very limited on space, just 2 5′ x 12′ beds, and 5 containers. Your season in N.D. is later than ours, but similar in that we don’t put in delicate plants (tomatoes, peppers, squash) until after May 20th. Beans can go in early to mid May. The only things we are planting now are plants that don’t mind if it gets really cold.
I see asparagus in the back right of your garden, I think. Do you have rhubarb too?
4:52 pm on March 30th, 2014
Staff, can you come here and plant our garden. It is a work of art.
Momma is trying to talk Pop into beets now.
Wose, I can pick you up. If I have my directions correct, you are on my way to Teddy’s.
5:02 pm on March 30th, 2014
I feel like a twit in that I’m just barely thinking about trimming back some rose geranium (which goes where it wants and snuffs out all other life) and replacing existing ground cover with succulents. How do y’all keep your canine chums away from the edibles you plant? (Mine seem to regard anything bushy as something that MUST be marked–at the very least. I abandoned hope after they got to the tiny eggplants.)
5:21 pm on March 30th, 2014
Kat, my little travel bag is packed, and I am ready to go. I will follow Mama Luna’s rules: go to the bathroom, no wiggling, and bring lots of treats.
6:23 pm on March 30th, 2014
Diane, Momma has afence around her garden. The most I get from it is an occasional bunny trying to get in.
Wose and Teddy, Momma says I must stay home now, because we are under a Winter AWeather Advisory!!! Snow day tomorrow!!!
6:30 pm on March 30th, 2014
Diane, It is easy – no boy dogs, so no marking. Plus the 2 raised garden beds are outside the fenced area. The containers have not been a problem so far, either.
Kat, Barb never thought she liked beets. But just cooked in some water, or steamed and then peeled and served with butter and s & p, they are delish. Try some of the oval ones, or the mixed assortment with red, pink and gold beets.
Kelly just called. They have landed at O’Hare and are in route home. She may possibly come get Sammy tonight. Oh, break my heart!
6:54 pm on March 30th, 2014
Hi from everyone. It was a lovely gathering, and there were hugs, hugs and more hugs. And laughter and tears too.

Gathering!…sob!sob!sob!….I wish I could be begging at that table…sniffle!

Going around the table – YSAS (MCKey) at the head, to his right, engineer cousin Will, college graduate cousin James, the Storyteller, Martha at the other end of the table, with Zoe, recently married cousin Rachel, GLAD, OTAS (Rob) and Mac.
It was indeed wonderful – even if the picture is sideways.

Here’s a picture of Whitey-Lance. The guy holding him has lovely long curly hair and he wants to cut it. We don’t want to see it cut. Let’s take a vote.

8:05 pm on March 30th, 2014
We like the flowing locks!
8:12 pm on March 30th, 2014
Royal Mum, Thanks for posting that great picture! What a special day for our Purple Princess.
Rio, I wish I could be there with you.
Hobbit, Never say never. Thanks for posting the picture of the Pixie, Wade, and my VBFF.
Whitey-Lance is such a handsome dog! The Giant is very handsome. I think he should keep his hair that length.
I was watching “Born to Dance”, with Eleanor Powell and James Stewart. I got interrupted by Grizz. He wanted to watch “The Walking Dead.”
8:14 pm on March 30th, 2014
Kat, We will have to reschedule our trip to visit Teddy.

8:59 pm on March 30th, 2014

9:01 pm on March 30th, 2014
Rio, what do you mean I am not a friend of photography? Here is a beautiful picture of a person who has a head on.

9:03 pm on March 30th, 2014
MPM: You’ve been taking photography lessons!
Tupper’s Mama: A gathering of family and friends supporting each other with love. I have a lump in my throat, a tear in my eye and a smile on my face all at the same time.
9:04 pm on March 30th, 2014
MPM, Great photo. You didn’t even cut the tops off the mountains! Snicker.
T & G’s mama, thanks for the photo ids. We assume you were the one taking the picture.
Gotta go for now. Kelly is on her way to get the big guy.
9:21 pm on March 30th, 2014
MollysMaw!….snort!…Your are in Alaska, why do you keep taking photos of the highway?….wheeze!…Seriously easy to make CHobbit move off the middle of the highway and stand on the side of the road where you could photograph her with a beautiful background….grunt!
9:24 pm on March 30th, 2014
Highway!….CHobbit could have been run over during the taking of that last photograph! …gah!
9:35 pm on March 30th, 2014
Rio – Zoe and the boys are doing ok. Each one of them gets a lot of support. YSAS has a wonderful, loving and intelligent fiancé, OTAS has GLAD, and Zoe has all of them, plus Martha and her 3 wonderful adult kids. Everyone feels a great loss, but knows they still have a great bond.
After dinner, we were sitting in the living room where the computer screen saver slide show seemed to have picture after picture of blog pics, Snowhook pics and family pics. We all ended up just watching the scenes flash by – and smiling.
Loving the pictures of Alaska, and our gang up there.
9:39 pm on March 30th, 2014
Golinka!….Were there any nicely cropped photos of me that flashed by?….sniffle!sneeze!
10:11 pm on March 30th, 2014
MPM: When we had Rio with us in Alaska and the railroad tracks ran parallel to the highway we were traveling on, I wanted to jump over the fence and tie Rio to the RR tracks but the others wouldn’t let me. It would have been a great photo opportunity but instead we took a picture of all of us on the highway. Heh!
10:35 pm on March 30th, 2014
Yeeeeep!
10:37 pm on March 30th, 2014
Wose: I just saw a commercial for the University of Sing Sing, the show about the program for which the Prof teaches. I am recording it so I will not miss it.
10:42 pm on March 30th, 2014
That Wade guy looks a lot like me. My Lady say we are one in the same. Giggle.
Lies! My Lady said even if youse all voted to have the Giant go with Princess Sam to Jacqueline’s to be shorn like a sheep, she would have lied to him and said youse all voted for him to keep his hair long.
I can’t believe MPM is heading home tomorrow. I wish I could keep her.
10:43 pm on March 30th, 2014
Rio – there was indeed a picture of you you you! That was actually how we started watching the slide show – when I said “Look! There’s Rio the Evil Pug”, which started quite a discussion among the non-bloggers in the room.
And now – we are saying goodnight all. Sleep well.
10:43 pm on March 30th, 2014
Meant to tell you…when I went to bed last night and closed my eyes, the dog trail was playing under my eyelids. Just like when I used to take long road trips and would check in to a motel and try to sleep, I’d be seeing the highway when my eyes closed. After a few minutes of this last night, I turned over and closed my eyes and still again was seeing the dog rail moving in front of me. I guess any intense experience imprints on your brain.
10:44 pm on March 30th, 2014
Dawson…the track less traveled…snicker
Oh lots to reply to tonight. Wookies Paw..ahhh Puppies in the Mist? Is there something you need to tell us or is Teddy still a puppy and was there mist?
Barb, Yes that is asparagus in the back of the garden and there is a rhubarb bed outside of the garden on the back fence. Three clumps.
About the asparagus.
Mr. Staff told a neighbor (2 years ago when Staff was in Minneapolis and couldn’t stop him) that she, the neighbor, could come and get some asparagus. Oh she did. It was later in June and he never got another stalk up that year. He was surprised, the schmuck. This last summer several of the former clumps did not return and the ones that did were quite sparse. When that neighbor came questing around this year she didn’t get anything. Nada. And she never will again either. grump. We had that aspargus bed for 10 years…grunt.
Diane C. We here have a twisted wire fence and outside it an electric fence and inside it chicken wire and under the raised beds we have 1/4 inch hardware cloth. And the deer are our big problem. Deer and woodchucks.
So very nice to see the family and we echo Dawson. Both happy and sad at once. sniff Thanks Golinka!
We here think that AJ should grow the hair long enough for locks of love. He can do it! What nice red hair it would be.
Rose, I would much rather watch Dancing than the Dead…snort.
Mollypop’s Mom…heh. Good thing that person is short. You might have not had the head on her if she was tall!…snicker. Really you are doing a GREAT job with the photo’s. We are impressed.

Wyatt: they both begin with “W,” give this old person a break, heh. Maybe it was the otter cork since I called you Wyatt when I was visiting and petting you (I think).
Belle Starr: my gift to youse since you are so special:

CHobbit: There is no judgement from me. Nope, not in the slightet. I think the otter corks are in cahoots with the MGs.
More to CHobbit: Belle Starr is demanding the cuteness or she is going to be something, something…I forget the details of her demands and moods.

Here I am all alone in the night, again. I tried to get home earlier, but twice the man asked if I was leaving him. Finally convinced him that if I could leave I would be up early in the morning. I really don’t want to miss the doc. The girls and I are not sure that the chemo is worth what it is doing to his mind. Everyone would just like a last visit with the “real” daddy.
The Alaska pics make me nostalgic. I still haven’t gotten to show most of mine to Rick and that really makes me sad.
I will treasure my time in Alaska always, yet it will also be tinged with the sadness that I was away for those three coherent weeks.
Wolfie, thanks for filling in the blanks on the song.

ML, No matter what, we’ll always have Alaska. ❤️ And Whittier!
I’m glad you had that time. It gave you strength for what you must endure.
