Chetspeak on Sunday

We were in a conference room at a hotel near the airport, and everyone in the audience – maybe not quite as big as it had been at the beginning, when Bernie had tapped the microphone, a painful sound for me, pounding like drums right next to my ears, although no one else seemed to mind, cleared his throat and said, “Can, uh, you hear me all right?” a terrific start, in my opinion – was a private eye, on account of this was the Great Western Private Eye Convention. We’re partners in the Little Detective Agency, me and Bernie, Bernie’s last name being Little. I’m Chet, pure and simple, and we’d been in business for almost as long as I could remember, although we’d never been to a convention before. “Not our thing,” Bernie said, so that was that, until Georgie Malhouf, president of the Great Western Private Eye Association, offered Bernie five hundred bucks to give a speech.

“A speech?” Bernie had said.

“Twenty minutes, tops,” Georgie Malhouf told him. “Plus questions.”

“I’ve never given a speech in my life.”

“So what?” said Georgie Malhouf. “There was also a time in your life when you hadn’t had sex. Did that stop you?”

That one zipped right by me, but the point was: five hundred bucks.

Barb’s wonderful son stopped by last evening and salted the driveway. Barb drove her car from the garage to the end of the driveway, got out, got the mail, and drove back into the garage. Her neighbors must think she is nuts, but didn’t want to risk another slip and fall!

Dawson, Congratulations! Canada won the Hockey Gold!

Melanie, It is so good to to hear from you and to know your sons are visiting. They are two fine lads.

Barb, That is a smart move. Mom has decided not to walk down our long driveway anymore if it is icy. We only had one day this winter of ice on the driveway but a man in this city slipped and is still in critical condition in the hospital. (head injury)

Howlers, Barb had something similar to the Winter Trax when she lived in the country. They had a bunch of spikes on the bottom and cut into the ice so you had traction. She has not replaced them since the move, but maybe she should. The back yard is too icy to do poop patrol and no one is volunteering.

Staff, I didn’t cancel going to Alaska, I just postponed it. I plan to check the vacancies in the Hobbit Hotel (I near it’s a 5 Star) after all the Iditarod hoopla is over. Then instead of taking an 8-day trip, I’ll make it 4 or 5 days. That would be 2 days on an airplane and 2 or 3 days in Anchorage. I can pack enough backup food for that amount of time. Maybe we could do that together.

Those coming to Alaska: don’t forget sunglasses. The sun can be really, really bright especially with the snow glare. This morning’s sun reminded me to tell you this. It is not icy now but with the warm weather coming, there will be melting during the day and freezing at night. I do have a couple of pair of those ice trekkers. I’ve never used them as my boots have good grip. Some people get their outdoor boots and shoes studded locally.

O’Howlers: yes there are extra hair blow dryers. Also check your SDD in a few minutes.
HOH: I decided to drive past your hotel but the road was blocked off for the Fur Rondy dog sled races. You will be close to the action but if I remember correctly, there is a steep sidewalk to climb up to 4th Avenue.
Mollypop’s Mom (and Staff): you are welcome at the Hobbit Hotel whenever you can come. I do have one major trip coming up Ap 20- May 3 (to Turkey on a Walking Adventures trip). T & G, That is a truly remarkable make over. We absolutely love it. It is so fresh and light looking. Makes the room seem much bigger too. Does your dad love it? And the floors are gorgeous. You didn’t even have to have them refinished! Can’t wait to be there in person.

OH: you can print a boarding pass at home from your info but NO MORE than 24 hours before departure OR there are kiosks at airports to print your info. This from the techno-challenged one so double check. Mom usually looks helpless at the airport and someone does it for her 🙂

    T&G Lovely light room!

Rio, It is hell to be so naive about airline travel. We are trying to tell them to just BREATHE. We think tomorrow, the magic email will arrive, and everything will be clear. Or else pop will low his lid. Heh!

    6:53 pm on February 23rd, 2014

Howlers: We always wait to print our ticket at the airport kiosk. That way there are no complications. Just enter your confirmation number and the little machine spits out the boarding pass. And, Riö’s right, two of those seats are yours.
    Loved your picture.

  88. Dawson
    6:53 pm on February 23rd, 2014

O’Howlers: Each airlines is different but the ones I travel on do not need a ticket. You DO need a boarding pass and if you do not print it at home then allow yourself even more extra time at the airport. Also a good idea to go early if the flight is sold out.

Howlers – no matter what else you do or don’t pack, make sure you have your license or passport.

And do just breathe. Believe us, you will NOT be the only people in the airport who don’t know how all this stuff works. Just think, on your way home, you can be the seasoned travelers who help the clueless newbies.

Hi Callie! I just noticed a familiar looking feline in the after photo. He must have slyly blurred out of here to get a preview of the finished project.

Maggie: Tell Barb that Bear thinks she should open her Own Restaurant. What wonderful smells must be coming out of your kitchen every night.

O’Howlers: Love the quote. Print off boarding pass at home or at the gate; you probably have been assigned seats already OR some of the ones claimed as booked haven’t yet been “released” by the airline for booking. I wouldn’t worry
Wose: Wish you were here too for Plunderfest. A returning Plunderer would be cool.
Staff: I will be in a VBM if I don’t get an ID. Sniff.
Mr. Redbone: ML read your message about Macy the other day but said she had been too busy to reply. I don’t know if that is a good or bad thing.
