Chetspeak on Sunday
“Mistaken identity?” Bernie said.
“Can’t rule it out completely,” Stine said. “But just about, in the case of someone like you.”
“Someone like me?”
“How about I revise that to someone in your profession? Can’t help making enemies, no matter what a sweetheart you might be inside.”
At least Stine hadn’t missed that: Bernie was a sweetheart inside. But did we have enemies? I myself liked most of the perps and gangbangers we’d come across. And they liked us. Take Whispering Hex Voidman, for example, who on his very first day out on parole made a point of dropping in with some antler snacks just for me. Those antler snacks: a dream come true. And dreams coming true happens a lot in my life! I often dream about antler snacks, for example. Maybe you do, too. All of that probably fits together in a way that might come to me later. Too bad old Hex had boosted the antlers from Petco and ended up back behind bars by dinner time, but that wasn’t the point. The point was I couldn’t think of any enemies.

Good morning, everyone! Chetspeak, Egg Day (with apologies to Fern). Life is great.
25*F at 8 this morning here. 1/4 inch of ice on the sushi pond and wading pool. Darling Darah the Destroying Dog is “harvesting” ice a chunk at a time
Macy’s mom, take care and stay close to the little room.
Rebecca, hope you are home safely.
Everyone else, try to have a salubrious Sunday.
9:33 am on November 24th, 2013
Good morning. It was 21 here, with a wind chill of -4. Brrrrr
Fern ate this morning.
9:36 am on November 24th, 2013
Good morning and Happy Egg Day everyone. Special shout-out to Fern. Hope she is better this morning.
Speaking of the antlers that Chet likes, you can get those from Macy’s dad Rick. Barb brought me two when she came back from Texas. I have been chewing on one and it is great!
Someone asked when the new book is coming out. It will be September, 2014.
9:40 am on November 24th, 2013
Go Fern! A bird eating is always good. Maybe Dima and Fern should eat together. No scratch that…bad idea.
9:42 am on November 24th, 2013
How could Chet have enemies? Now Bernie? Not too sure even though he is a sweetheart. Finishing up something for the auction. Yes, I know I’m late . . sigh
We’re at 11 degrees with a wind chill factor of 1. YIKES Snow? About 2 inches and then windblown. Clean up was a snap. Kind of snow you only need a broom.
Fern? How ya doing, chickie? I understand about big babies. Not fun.
I bet Darah is bring the ice chunks into the house to chew. snicker.
The Pack helped with clearing and are now taking a nap.
9:47 am on November 24th, 2013
I’m almost afraid to ask: What are antler snacks?
Glad that Fern is feeling better.
It’s a beautiful sunny morning here–17 with a wind chill of 6.
Good morning all.
9:59 am on November 24th, 2013
Either I read every other post now or some posts show up late when I refresh. The O’Howlers were not there when I posted before.
Weird.
Deer shed their antlers every year. The antlers are bone. That’s all I know.
10:00 am on November 24th, 2013
Melanie: (says mom) Curse you, you know your Newf behavior. Almost no ice on pond or pool but couch and sunroom floor are quite damp. Darling damp Darah’s face…WET!
10:05 am on November 24th, 2013
snickering here HOH’s . .
It’s T&G’s Turkey Day! May they have many bits of turkey, mashed potatoes and other goodies passed to them under the table.
Now the Pack do not go under the table. They are too well trained for that.
They just put their heads ON the table.
My Grandmother (never Grannie) drilled into our heads ELBOWS OFF THE TABLE.
We now have to use our elbows on the table. To protect our food. Guard our space. We talk so much that if we didn’t our food would be gone.

Sorry abut the incorrect usage of commas. Tad tired here.

Antlers are naturally shed and then collected, cleaned and cut. A product of USA, so safe for the 4 legged. Nothing gross, Bee. Now bully sticks are another story. Barb saw one on clearance the other day for a good price, but couldn’t quite bring herself to buy it. What are bully stikcs you ask………
10:26 am on November 24th, 2013
Oley’s, In six years and 2 doz. hens, we had only one hen that became egg bound. Tried submerging her in a warm water bath, even tried the KY jelly (yes we did!). Nothing worked, but a day or two later she layed her egg and was back to normal.
Another time we had a hen with a prolapse. Had to go to the drug store and buy Preparation H. Barb was going to tell the druggist it was for a chicken and not her, but thought that made her look a little kooky. Snicker.

Greetings!
I am glad that Fern is eating, and seems to be on the road to tip-top.
Can’t wait to hear Teddy speak!
Lurking again….
11:44 am on November 24th, 2013
Hooray for Chetspeak. I’ll have to read the Sound and the Furry again. I don’t remember some of these passages that are being posted.
Melanie: “Mable, Mable, strong and able, keep your elbows off the table” I can see all youse guarding your food with your elbows on the table, forearms up and Newf heads decorating any empty spaces.
T&G: Your menu sounds delish. Have a great Thanksgiving.
Teddy RoughRider: Today is the Grey Cup, Canada’s football championship game. The Hamilton Tiger Cats are playing the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. The temperature will be just below freezing with winds of 15 to 20 kilometers per hour.
11:44 am on November 24th, 2013
Now I’m afraid to ask what bully sticks are….
11:47 am on November 24th, 2013
BStover, A Word of advice. You do not want to know. Leave it. It is really gross.
11:50 am on November 24th, 2013
Happy Chetspeak and Egg Day everyone.
B: Be afraid, be very afraid (Kidding…I don’t know what they are either)
Happy Turkey Day Royals! The rest of us will have to wait.
Another beautiful sunny day here. May get up to 50. ^..^

Agreeing with Staff. B.Stover, you don’t want to know. Have never bought them and never will.

Dawson, speaking of Mable, always tell the HOH, “Off the table Mable, the dollar is for…” enough said.
Look, Masquers is bragging about 50*F. We are still Brrrrrrrr……..!
12:19 pm on November 24th, 2013
Dawson, we haven’t heard that one.
Bee, Picture a big bull, and now think about the worse possible part to be made into chew sticks! Gah!
12:25 pm on November 24th, 2013
That Mable ditty was quoted many times by Dad as we were growing up. I had to google HOH’s Mable reference. While I did that I ran across thttp://www.redbubble.com/people/rogersampson/writing/3560897-things-you-dont-want-to-hear-a-doctor-sayhis:

Tupper&Gilly: I already have my spot reserved at your table. Still drooling like a Newf over the Mashed Potato recipe. Please add it to Dish, just for good measure.
“Vegetarians are just poor hunters.” Hahaha. Nana says she will have to tell that one to her sisters…both of whom are.
O’Howlers: Good News about Fern. Poor little chickie…what a Traumatic Experience for her…the trip to the Vet being the least of it. Wonder how many chickens vets see in their careers.
It’s very true…Emergencies always happen on the weekend…what’s up with that?
Awesome One: We figured as much…no choice in Dentists…only one who graduated from Little Shop of Horrors.
The Royal Mum gives good advice for the pain. As Siber-H says, the cut should heal in a week, but in the meantime……
Macy’s Mom: If hives are a reaction to an allergy…what could be the cause? Paws crossed you feel tip-top very soon.
12:31 pm on November 24th, 2013
I think that link was supposed to be funny but some of them hit the nail on the head and are more frighening. My favorite is #7.
Glad Fern has eaten. Is she drinking water? How can you tell if a chicken is happy? Do they wag their tail feathers?
12:39 pm on November 24th, 2013
For 20 years I had a fantastic dentist in Montana. He actually took pride in his work and cared about you, the patient. Then I moved up here. Normal is to have a couple dentists from down south alternate coming up here for two weeks at a time. Sometimes one stays for awhile. They care if you have insurance or not and many are incompetent.
12:41 pm on November 24th, 2013
Dawson, If a chicken isn’t feeling well, it sort of deflates. Its head droops, its wings hang down and it looks listless. They don’t wag their tail feathers if they are happy but they do talk a lot.

For all the Huskies – this screen shot from the Holiday Valley web site is the best I could do to show you the snow guns this year. I miss being there when the snow guns are blasting.

MPM: Love the “snow storm” .
To all else, the HOH apologizes about the “Mable” reference but mom says it to us when noses hit tables/counters…

I knew I shouldn’t have asked….

MollyPop’s Mom: Lovely Snow just in time for the Howladays. Siber-H is drooling.
Barb&Magpie: Memories from Nana’s youth…the expression “running around like a chicken with its head cut off” comes to mind. The Cold Realities of Days Gone By.
Hounds: And, that dollar used to be a quarter way back when.
Franklin: See youse at the Feast!
1:22 pm on November 24th, 2013
From everything I have read, the cause of hives is basically unknown. I personally feel that they are retribution for all misdeeds in my entire life, all being repaid at once. Double.
I now have a cleaning system in place. After trip to little room, spend 2 minutes moving stuff out of public area. Return to sitting. Nobody better open the bedroom door.
1:25 pm on November 24th, 2013
Love the snow picture MPM. We are starting on cards and do not have your new and improved last name, should we use the old one? If not, could you private message us?
1:27 pm on November 24th, 2013
And while we are more or less on the subject of manners, when did this one get rescinded?
Sit up straight, remove your cap. Put your napkin in your lap.
It still bugs the bejeebers out of me to see caps at the table.

My personal list of things I have not wanted to hear from Doctors is

Fern is now right here in our living room!!!!! What the heck????
She is still not standing or doing anything. Mom and Pop are still worried. Meantime, at the coop: 2 more eggs.
Rio, as far as we can tell, there are 3 kinds of 2-legged chicken owners.
The first are the big production farms that keep thousands of chickens in squalid and very inhumane conditions. That is the kind of chicken sold in grocery stores, fast food restaurants, and run-of-the-mill restaurants.
The second are the Good farmers. They raise small flocks, both for eggs and for meat. This is their business, and chickens must make money, not cost money, or yes, they will become food.
The third are the backyard chicken folks who keep chickens as pets and when they get eggs, that is just the “icing on the cake”. Our ‘rents are this third kind.

A camp Nawaka song from Zoë. Leavened when she was nine.
Are you a camel
A flip flopping camel
And say do you have a hump?
Or do you sit
At the table just
As straight as you are able
Or sit all in a lump?
Lump. Lump. Lump.
Are you a camel
A flip flopping camel
Without any starch in your spine?
If you’re such a camel
A flip flopping camel
Then go some where else to dine.

Yesterday, I helped with the errand run. When we got to the Feed, I was told to pick out something for me and Mama Meash. I picked us each one of those bully sticks. Mine was delish, and Meashka seemed to like hers too. We are farm doggies.

Jeeze Louise!

O’Howlers: I’m sure that chickens in the living room is bad manners. I’m almost sure you will not stoop to Fern’s low level. Gulp.
Melanie: I am now sitting up straight!

Thanks Barb&Maggie: Now I think I would be able to identify the moods of a chicken.
Princess Sam: I know you miss your girl but she needs to run and ski in the Alps! She will always return to you in the end.
Rose$Rio: Check your SDD.

Mollypop’s Mom, Beautiful Snow picture! We only got two inches where I live, but the NM mountains have been getting good snows. All the ski areas will be opening soon.
Macy, I wish your mom didn’t have to do this cleaning and cooking. She shouldn’t be doing it.
Dawson? Are you talking about what we call soccer?
Today is the end of the Formula One Racing season, sob, sob, sob.
2:32 pm on November 24th, 2013
Poor Siber – he gets snow, but loses racing. It just shows, if it’s not one thing, it’s another.
Macy’s Mom- yup, we get it. Our downstairs is off limits to anyone not wearing protective gear.
Dawson – did you get some clove oil?
Dear, sweet BSD – it is SO good to read the blog and see your avatar back with us. We missed you and Masquers and Nana so very much.
As to doggie chins on tables- we Corgis just don’t get that. We really don’t.
2:35 pm on November 24th, 2013
Ski? Formula one racing? Cooking/cleaning? Camels? Chicken moods? HUH? Have we missed something?
3:00 pm on November 24th, 2013
SiberH: No, not soccer. Canadian Football League which is like American football but with a few different rules. The Grey Cup is our Super Bowl.
3:04 pm on November 24th, 2013
T&G: I do have some clove oil but I’m a little leary of putting it on what is still in some spots a raw wound. This morning I was ready with a snack so I could take my pills within minutes of waking. I do think it is improving. Thanks for everyone’s concern.
4:02 pm on November 24th, 2013
HI everyone. I am officially now 6 months old, weighing in at about 50 pounds (dad says 50 on the way to 85 or 90). I still think they forget to feed me from time to time, but all in all. not so bad. And in honor of Dawson, just to let you know the kibble I eat is pure Canadian (a brand called Orijen).
I’ve met lots of friends since coming to my forever home in Chevy Chase. There is Charlie and Lucy down the block (both goldens) and my next door neighbor was Tasha (a black lab), but she was 14 and crossed the bridge a few days ago. I will miss her a lot. I also meet lots of friends when we go for walkies. A couple days ago I met a Siberian puppy named Zada who is just a couple of weeks older than me; we wrestled a lot (she is very good, but she only managed to pin me four times; I think I need to work on that some more). And yesterday, I met a border collie mix named Pepper when we went to Lake Frank (right here in Montgomery County) — we ran and ran and ran some more; boy did I sleep well last night. There are also my two legged friends, like Auntie Cindi and Auntie Susan who just adore me whenever I see them. And this grandpa guy is pretty good at tummies too; I think he had had some prior practice.
While my formal name is Teddy, I have a acquired a few nicknames as well. My dad calls me his little goofball, especially when I do something silly and my tongue hangs out the side of my mouth (apparently that happens a lot). I am also my mom’s quilter’s assistant, helping her with the quilt ladies and retrieving fabric for her whenever any is left at my mouth level (which is getting higher all the time).
Most importantly though, I am so happy to have all my blog friends on this here blog (including my bestest friend Rose). So long for now, I need to go supervise mom making dinner, one of my favoritemost things to do.
4:03 pm on November 24th, 2013
Oleys, Fern doesn’t have a prolapse does she? Is her comb bright color or pale? If she is sick her comb
will lose color.
4:10 pm on November 24th, 2013
Hi Teddy, you snuck in there while we were writing. Sounds like you landed in a pretty good spot, perfect even. You got some might big footsteps to fill buddy, but sounds like you are up to it.
Barb just ran out and bought a Christmas gift for Lily – an assortment of horse grooming supplies. Saw a good book while at the feed store, called The Eighty Dollar Horse by Letts. Looks like something Oley’s mom would like.
Now back to the task of dragging some Christmas decorations up from the basement.
Carry out pizza on the menu for dinner tonight.
4:28 pm on November 24th, 2013
I’ve got my Lady under the quilt with me. She arrived home last night after spending the afternoon at urgent care. The doctor said she is severely dehydrated and thinks she may have kidney stones. Why is she eating rocks? No idea. She plans to work on things for the auction later today.
Ruff Rider: Pancho and Lefty said they will resume your devil dog lessons once they finish tending to Nana. I wonder how Nana’s devil dog lessons are progressing?
4:41 pm on November 24th, 2013
Mom told us we CANNOT think Christmas until the day after turkey day…something about their wedding. BUT we have lots of turkeys, leaves, pilgrims and candles for them (even if they are doing Turkey Day in VA with wifi questionable). When they come home to us, us, us, we are putting lights and trees inside and out and stockings and nativities and advent calendars and more..
We’ll let y’all know what fun we have when we can do it all.
4:43 pm on November 24th, 2013
Siber-H, Holiday Valley got only 3 inches of snow. All of this snowstorm is from the snow guns. Remember a couple of years ago I posted a snow gun to buy and also directions to make one. Talk to your Mom again. That could be your backyard.
5:16 pm on November 24th, 2013
Barb, Fern’s comb is still red. She tried to stand a few times today…a good sign we think.
Teddy! You are living the life, Little Goofball!!! Carry on.
We are in our “winter tavern” and pop is cooking brats and beans on the woodstove. We would rather be upstairs keeping our eye on that chickie.
5:17 pm on November 24th, 2013
Mollypop’s Mom, I sure do remember that snow gun. I haven’t let mom forget it either. She just rolls her eyes at me and laughs.
I could put the cost of the water for it on her credit card.
TeddyRR, Enjoyed your update!
Tenzing, We are glad your lady went to urgent care, but we are sorry and upset she is feeling bad. We are now going to state the obvious. Make her drink lots of fluids.
5:18 pm on November 24th, 2013
Tenzing: Try to keep your lady there and feed her some water. Has she been taking lessons from Elim on how to eat inedible items?
Quilting Assistant Teddy Rough Rider Goofball: Happy Birthday and congratulations on the 50 pound milestone. I’m sad to hear about your friend Tasha but happy to hear about all your other friends and family, especially SiberH’s cousin Zada and Charlie and Lucy, the Goldens. I’m sure they will teach you all manner of essential skills. Keep eating that good Canadian food and Go RoughRiders!
5:37 pm on November 24th, 2013
Dawson: I have tried to bring my Lady up right. She still won’t get me homework to taste. Tenzing is making sure she is drinking plenty of liquids. We offered to share our indoor water dish with her.
6:13 pm on November 24th, 2013
Teddy Ruff Rider, Loulou is only 15 days behind you. She will be 6 months old on Dec. 9th. She’s a bit more behind you in the weight department – she weighs 5.5 pounds.
Loulou’s devil dog episodes are wild, but she can’t get up on the furniture yet. Today I bought steps and might regret this.
6:16 pm on November 24th, 2013
Tenzing and Elim, Please do not let your Lady out of your sight. She needs to rest, and drink lots or water. Or eat ice, like I do.
6:44 pm on November 24th, 2013
We are finally watching our football game, recorded yesterday. It is snowing in South Bend. We are getting snow this Tuesday/Wednesday! Hurray!
Melanie, Pop’s horse Ned saw a chiropractor today. He had acupuncture! He feels like a new Ned.
6:52 pm on November 24th, 2013
Wow. HOH’s mom has a b i l in Niles MI (just over the border from South Bend). We always love it when they get snow. We rarely do but may have snow on Turkey Day when we go to VA.

At least it was warmer out than yesterday….brrrrr!….The good news is she only has to go to the busy-place 1 and 1/2 day this week….woooooo!
Rebecca!…How come Rebecca is sick again?…grunt!…What the hell does she do when she travels for her busy-place that makes her so sick all the time? At this rate she will be in the hospital during the Iditarod, just youse all wait and see…sniff!

Hello, Rio!

8:08 pm on November 24th, 2013
Since the vets don’t seem to know much about chickens, isn’t there some sort of online community of chicken people who might be able to help with chicken problems?
8:08 pm on November 24th, 2013
Fern!….Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got. Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn’t you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they’re always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name….snort!

The Roughriders are running away with this game, 31 to 6. One difference between US and Canadian football is that we only get 3 downs instead of 4 to make some points.
Rio: I’m sure the man in this house is keeping a close eye on your Avalanche team. You are 2 points behind.
8:17 pm on November 24th, 2013
MollyPop’s Mom, I was going to tell you something or ask you something, but I can’t remember what it was . .
Tenzing, I am having to drink eight cups of water or liquids a day. Yikes.
I have a water bottle that holds 4 cups and then drink tea, lots and lots of tea.
I am headed to bed. It will be the evening when I get back.
So TTFN

They did the tests to make sure she could have the treatment and immediately put her in the hospital – she was severely dehydrated for one thing. They let her out the next day but she had to skip her treatment. Everybody drink some water!

Wose: You are up late! I have been doing my best to care for my Lady. She did absolutely nothing today. Both the Giant and I are in agreement that she needs several days of not doing anything. She won’t hear of it. I’ve threatened to bite her by the pajama leg, but she says she isn’t scarit of me.
10:27 pm on November 24th, 2013

Tenz – would a couple of “death from the ankles down” Royal Corgis scare her?
If not, for sure two Wrotten Kats would, and it just so happens we have a couple of spares around here. What was your mailing address again? We’ll get em shipped right off tomorrow. Avoid the Christmas rush and all that.
10:31 pm on November 24th, 2013
Tupper!….Good idea! Ship the Kats!…snort!…Two rotten Kats sitting on her head all tangled in her pixy hair might do the trick….heh!heh!

Rebecca, I am sending AbbietheKitty to sleep on you. She is not as big as a Newf, but she has some weight on her. Remember she does not like her mattress pads to wiggle around.
Melanie. I am supposed to drink between 12 and 14 eight ounce glasses of water every 24 hours. I keep track. 12 is easy now but it is a little struggle to do more. I have done as many as 16 glasses. snicker. AND they do not let me do any caffeinated beverages. Tea is often caffeinated. sniff The secret is to drink early and often. Good luck tomorrow.

Fern you drink too. Water is important. That is why we must not pollute it.
