Chetspeak on Sunday
Women of a certain type have an effect on Bernie. This was that type of woman, easy to see just from the way Bernie’s mouth fell slightly open. Curvy shape: check. Big blue eyes: check. Face tilted up in his direction: check. Poor Bernie: that was all it took.
“That’s me,” Bernie said. “And this is Chet.”
She backed away. “He’s so big. I’m not comfortable around dogs.”
Not comfortable around me? True, I’m a hundred-plus pounder, but she had nothing to be uncomfortable about, unless she pulled a gun or something like that. I watched her hands, square-shaped, a little plump, with bright red nails.
“You can be comfortable around Chet,” Bernie said.
“Why is he looking at me like that?”
Bernie glanced over at me. “Uh, not sure, actually. But he means well.”
Of course I did! But I kept my eyes on her hands, just in case. Funny how the mind works: mine was making some kind of connection between red nails and guns. Then I started thinking about the way women paint their nails – I’d seen Leda, Bernie’s ex-wife, do it many times – and men never did. Next I thought about what human nails were for, so small and dull-edged. And after that I lost the thread.

Happy Egg Day, Everyone! It is great to hear from Chet. Don’t worry…we here lose threads a lot too!
We just now got caught up on yesterday’s post. We are sending pawsitive thoughts to Lady. Please feel better, Lady.
And we are very happy that Macy has been ubabandoned.
Pop is mostly out from under the quilt. In fact he and Mom made it to Art for Arf’s Sake last night. Today, they said we have more work. We have to plant a dogwood tree sent to us from Leslie and Cherokee and the rest of the pack, for Sasha. We are also planting grass and wildflowers on a grave.
Birds: we love watching birds on our feeders. We get cardinals, goldfinches, redwing blackbirds, and lots more. We do not like grackles or blue jays tho.
We have some killdeers in our field, and Mom and Pop found their nest. Stupid birds lay their eggs in the gravel driveway, and then have a fit when anyone gets close. We put orange cones outto make sure nobody drives over that nest.

Gooood morning everyone! Chetspeak, Sunday, egg day, wowser! Can it get any better.
Dawson: other black dog in foto is Lucy Lou the labradoo. Emma P the boxer is missing (shy, hates water).
CHobbit: paws crossed here for Lady.
Macy: glad your pack is back together. Tell them our newfs have traveled well, just hard to fit in carry-on bags!
T&G: Give your folks (BOTH) lots of love.
Rio: you are a character, have a great day and don’t pick on poor puggy Beau! He can’t help it!
B, B&M, BSD, Wolfie,OH,SH,Kats,et al, Have a great day.

Good morning and back at ya on the good day.
Sunny and quiet here on this lovely Sunday, Egg Day.
Barb did have fun at Jack’s birtday dinner last night, now today has Ben’s birthday dinner. Two grandsons, and they were born 1 day apart. More importantly, MY birthday is on Tuesday the 7th. I will be 4 years old. Jack thinks it is funny that we are the same age.
C Hobbit, good prayers going out for Lady. Also, how did the realtor appointment go? Last we read, she was going to come back with some comps and give you an idea of pricing. Did that go well?
9:25 am on May 5th, 2013
Good morning. I had my soft-boiled egg! Molly’s Mom is here, that’s why.
9:37 am on May 5th, 2013
Good Morning all!
I will be having a soft boiled egg along with you Sammie!
C.Hobbit, The Pac enjoys some rice and egg when they are not tip top.
Playtime in the garden today. Still getting the soil ready. No planting until the end of May. Those who rushed the season? Last night the temp was 32.
Maggie, does Barb let you have any of those birthcakes?
Chet, that is always how I pictured you. And, I undersand about losing the thread. Just the other day I was telling Zoë . . whoops lost it again. snicker
9:40 am on May 5th, 2013
Oh, and Barb, thanks for letting me know about the compost tea. The asparagus will appreciates it.
9:42 am on May 5th, 2013
Sunday Chetspeak and there’s Chet with his famous White Ear on the cover of the new book! WoooHooo! A Collector’s Item for sure.
Happy Cinco de Mayo Everyone! It’s a day for Tequila and Fun. (except Nana says no tequila for her…she gets goofy(er)…and then Really Loses the Thread.
9:44 am on May 5th, 2013
Happy Egg Day!
CHobbit: Prayers of strength and love going out to Lady.
Aahhhh, Chet’s ear is back the way it is supposed to be.
Siber-H and Rio! GO Rockies!
T&G , Hoping that the Storyteller gains strength everyday , and is doing well in his own nice warm bed.

Cinco de Mayo…El Dia de la Batalia de Puebla…victory over the French in 1862.
Here in America a good excuse to partee and drink mas Coronas Extra.
9:48 am on May 5th, 2013
Here’s how I make Sam’s special egg. I put my two eggs in a small dish, cover them with plastic wrap and put them in the microwave. That way I can cook them so that they’re soft-boiled with chunks of eggs and I leave liquid egg that would be for Sam. Then the liquid that is left to gets poured over her kibble. Oh happy day!
9:49 am on May 5th, 2013
Good morning, Rose!
10:01 am on May 5th, 2013
Melanie, Yes the asparagus roots will soak up that tea. It gets the nutrients to the roots faster than just mixing compost into the soil. Here we can plant the hardy stuff that doesn’t mind cold nights – spinach, lettuces, peas, etc.
Barb has not had good luck with peppers in the past. She just found out that they are one of the most delicate veggies. They will live if you plant them a little early, but will not produce. The guy at the farmer’s market told her yesterday soil temp should not go below 60 degrees or they will be stunted.
10:07 am on May 5th, 2013
Poor Bernie.
I’m going to plant herbs today.
Bear/Masquers: How did you like the latest episode of Elementary?
I’ve heard killdeers but have never seen one. Very good of you, Howlers, to put those cones out.
Good morning all.
10:26 am on May 5th, 2013
Here are the killdeer eggs.

10:26 am on May 5th, 2013
Sniff!….I just checked my SDD and there is not one new donation for the Have Harness Will Travel campaign…grunt!…I was hoping to be very busy tallying up the dollars and announcing our first prize winner…huffle!…Nope, not this morning. Thank you to the few who have donated so far, by the way!….snort!snort!
10:30 am on May 5th, 2013
B: It felt almost like a season finale, but we see a new episode will be aired this coming Thursday. We are pulled deeper into solving the identity of Sherlock’s arch-nemesis, the mysterious Moriarty. Just when we think we know, we don’t.
Howlers: Good of youse to help protect those eggs.
10:48 am on May 5th, 2013
Maggie! Happy Pre-Birthday! And Happy Be-lated B-Day wishes to Jack & A Happy Birthday to Ben today. Lots of Cake & Celebration & Fun!
Melanie: We read/heard somewhere Not to Plant until after the 15th of May. 32 degrees! Hey. Wasn’t it 70 degrees just yesterday?
MollyPop’s Mom: Sammie is very lucky to have you there to prepare her Sunday Breakfast Special.
A soft-boiled egg Sounds Good to me this morning too.
10:51 am on May 5th, 2013
Cold!…It is only 37 degrees here. Someone’s mother decided today is the day she wants to run all over town to different stores….grunt!…My friend hates days like today – even though the fun won’t start till later…wheeze!
10:59 am on May 5th, 2013
BSD, it’s going to be near 70 today. Getting dry here. Weird to say after the non-Spring we had up to this week. High fire risk. The leaves are not out yet so the undergrowth is tinderbox ready. No high winds in the forecast, Thank Dog. Rain coming up midweek.
Breakfast egg on the front stoop!
11:00 am on May 5th, 2013
I didn’t get any cake (chocolate is bad for me), but Barb did bring home a huge steak bone for me, which I enjoyed this morning out in the yard.
We had kildeer in the country but have not seen any here. Not only do they lay eggs along the roadside in the gravel, but if you get close they will make a lot of racket and pretend they are injured to lead away a predator. They will put one wing down like they have a broken wing. Being a two legged, Barb knew to look for a nest close by.
Also had Bluejays out in the country, but none here. We were told that they got hit hard by West Niles a couple of years ago.
11:09 am on May 5th, 2013
MPM, Mom does not even cook our eggs, but that’s ok. We like them raw. She says when we have chickens, we will be eating more eggs, but she will have to cook them sometimes.
B&M, yup, those killdeers get crazy when anyone gets near that nest. They do the broken wing act, and try to lead you away from the nest. The ‘rents were not fulled.
We plant tomatoes, peppers, and flowers on Mothers Day here. The only stuff planted so far are cold weather plants such as lettuce, potatoes, and onions. They are all growing nicely.
Horses are on 24/7 turnout now. This means way less work and more time for fun fun fun.
11:10 am on May 5th, 2013
Wowser! We had poached eggs today. Just for us! Tonight is cilantro chicken enchiladas but we have to share with the 2 leggers and peck of parrots (little cannibals). So much rain here we are under 4 different flood watches, all in different neighborhoods than us. We be well above the TN river. Wet groung, no gardening, mud pies!
11:11 am on May 5th, 2013
Gah! Fooled, not fulled. Although, they are planning to go out to breakfast and get “fulled” there. heh!
11:27 am on May 5th, 2013
Lots of Poached Egg Breakfasts today.
Sammie you have started a trend!
11:38 am on May 5th, 2013
O’Howlers: Your Egg Day will soon be Guaranteed. That is unless a certain Project which is currently “under construction” is completed.
Lady: Hope the Chicken Soup did the trick and you are on the way back to feeling tip top.
Hounds: Soggy Sunday for youse. Muddy Monday coming up.
11:40 am on May 5th, 2013
Oley, We planted one row of beans today, but it might be a little early still. We are going to hold off till the 20th for the tomatoes and will wait till Memorial weekend to do the peppers a zucchini. We are going to see if we have better luck with the peppers by waiting longer.
11:46 am on May 5th, 2013
No fair – we didn’t get any eggs. Or bacon either. Ok, so we did get some duck jerky, but that’s all….sniff…
Mama is catering to the Storyteller’s dining wishes. He doesn’t usually care all that much about what is served, but the hospital food was so incredibly bad that to him, a hot, over easy egg is gourmet fare.
She is also catering to the Wrotten Kats who have decided that they no longer wish to partake of certain types of food, and prefer others, thank you very much.
And she is catering to us as we play “We Wanna Go Out – Now We Wanna Come In – Now We Wanna Go Out”. The point of the game is to see how many rounds we can play before she blows a gasket. We are up to 5, and the temperature around here is starting to rise significantly. tee hee
11:50 am on May 5th, 2013
Years ago when Staff biked all over town she was biking with a guy in a well populated area of Minneapolis and they went past a killdeer nest. Not that you saw it, they are hard to see. But the bird started her act and the guy believed it. He hopped off the bike and started after the bird to help it.
Staff told him several times that it was all a ploy but he didn’t believe her and kept chasing the bird. It led him out into the middle of the street and then flew away.
Staff did not say she told him so, but she didn’t see him anymore. Men who don’t listen are no fun at all.
11:53 am on May 5th, 2013
Tupper and Gilly you better watch out. When Momma snaps you are going to be very very sorry.
CHobbit we are sending loving thoughts and best wishes to Lady.
I had my eggs yesterday. Soft boiled and in an egg cup. My favorite way.
Dawson, I am sorry you had to listen to that little E swear so bad. She does get a little testy when she is losing and she really is happy and laughing if she wins. snicker.
Macy, stamp stamp back at you!
12:02 pm on May 5th, 2013
BSD: Muddy Monday will be right. Mmmmm, think if we try hard, we can convince the baby newf that mud is for swimming in AND frost’n tips?
12:33 pm on May 5th, 2013
Going to take Lady for a walk and see if it makes her happy enough to start eating again.
Had to share

12:53 pm on May 5th, 2013
HOH, glad to hear you are on high ground. It’s imperative for your morels.
snicker . .
Staff, speaking of herself in the third person again. Sigh. Anywoof, that guy deserved to be thrown back. I had one like that. He took me hunting for fuzzbutts. Dog, did it anger him that I was a better shot. Only time I ever had squirrel.
I have put on the second coat of paint. The salad wall looks better. I wii take a picture after my time on the heating pad.
Any of youse gardeners use peat moss as a mulch?
1:58 pm on May 5th, 2013
This is one of our vaca birds. We were staying about 15 miles from the winter home of the whooping cranes, but they left before we got there.
2:19 pm on May 5th, 2013
OOOO Macy! Only 15 miles from the whoopers? Well they wouldn’t have let you near them any way. They are working really hard to keep them wild and unused to humans.
Melanie,
I am so used to posting as Alice or Abbie that I get confused sometimes. That third person is a hard habit to break.
Going to take a bike ride now…yippee!

Masquers: There are three more episodes of Elementary. The final two are on the same night–May 16. Here’s a link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Elementary_episodes
3:01 pm on May 5th, 2013
Melanie, We are not using compost as mulch – no mulch except the wood kind around the trees and bushes. In the garden just using composted manure and mushroom compost mixed in with the soil. Mushroom compost is great stuff.
3:03 pm on May 5th, 2013
C.Harris, That is so cute!
Mollypop’s Mom, Where is the winter home of the sandhill cranes in your picture? They have a winter home in NM 60 miles south of here along the Rio Grande.
3:29 pm on May 5th, 2013
Not much planting today, just a clementis plant near our screened in porch. We did put up the tomato cages though, as our tomato plants are now three weeks old. As to this year’s crop, we have: Cherokee Purple (2 plants) and one each of Sara Black, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye, Sun Gold, and Virginia Sweets (the last one a type of cherry tomato). Some new varieties as Debbie felt adventuresome, in addition to the cherished Cherokee Purples. She also got them from a new place called The Tasteful Garden. We will let you know how everything turns out as the season progresses.
CHH – hope Lady is back to good health as soon as possible.
3:33 pm on May 5th, 2013
B: Thanks for the link. Yay! Three more episodes! Plus it has been renewed for a second season.
Looks like Zero Hour bit the dust after 3 shows.
Macy’s Mom: Love the bird photo! Tell us more about your vacation.
CHobbit: That Husky knows what he’s talking about.
Hope Lady feels better after the walk.
3:42 pm on May 5th, 2013
Wookie’s Dad, Those tomatoes sound interesting. We are going to check into the Sara Black, but don’t think any of the local growers have it. Since you seem to like the “black” tomatoes, you might want to consider Black Krim. We raised Black Krim, Cheroke Purple, Black Seaman (a dud) and Black Brandywine last year. Black Krim had a slight edge over Cherokee Purple, which is one of our favorites.
Now it is time for Barb to take off for Ben’s party. Hamburgers on the menu today, so I think that means no steak bones for me. A girl can always hope! BBL
3:43 pm on May 5th, 2013
It’s been a bit of a noisy morning in the kennel. The reason? We couldn’t decide who should make an announcement. We took a vote. Pancho distracted everyone, while Lefty made off with the bunny boot with the votes. From what we remember in our voting handbook—we can’t check it it because we had it for lunch one day—it is called a sweep when someone ends up with all the votes. That’s what we did. We have all the votes in our possession.
Ahem…Now, for the announcement. The Giant and our Lady traveled to Fairbanks on Friday night. On their journey they ran into an unexpected winter storm, a closed road due to an accident, and then truck problems—but, that’s a story for another time. On Saturday morning, they made there way to a outfitter to have the Giant measured for his new Clothe the Giant anorak. It will be made to fit his stature. This is the first time he will have a hood that fits properly so all the weight of the coat doesn’t hang on his head and strain his neck and shoulders, and the arms and hem will be the right length. Our Lady can’t thank all youse enough for making this possible for AJ. We give youse all one guess what color he chose…
Our Giant and Lady also saw our favorite Hobbit. She is busy packing up her house and taking care of Lady.
4:19 pm on May 5th, 2013
Pancho and Lefty: Hope your Lady and the Giant made it to Fairbanks and back in the truck.
Can’t wait to see, the Giant rock his new coat!
4:22 pm on May 5th, 2013
Macy’s Mom, that is a great picture of the vaca bird!
4:25 pm on May 5th, 2013
Wose: They arrived home late last night. His Cloth the Giant coat should be ready in a couple of weeks. Ooh, Wose, Mama Luna wants to talk to you. We’re not sure about what, but we’ve seen that look before.
4:36 pm on May 5th, 2013
Pancho and Lefty: Do I need to hide so mama Luna can’t find me?
4:45 pm on May 5th, 2013
Wose: Too late! We recommend looking as cute as possible and then blame someone else.
4:54 pm on May 5th, 2013
Wose, Wose, Wose: You know I like to indulge my girls, you and Belle Starr, from time to time especially during quilt time. But, now Belle Starr has it in her head that she needs a ta-tu, too. One a somewhat related matter, she now wants a tu-tu. It’s been ta-tu this and tu-tu that since you showed her Woodstock and Snoopy hugging. Non-stop. I can hardly get my ten naps in a day. I finally asked her what tatoo she would get. She responded quickly, “Me hugging Rio around his non-neck just like Wose’s ta-tu but different.” I told her she could get that tatoo on her ankle if she could convince a certain pug to pose for the image.
4:59 pm on May 5th, 2013
Princess Sam you are soooo lucky to have Mollypop’s Mom to give you such incredibly special soft cooked eggs. But the you are a special Princess so we would except nol less!
5:03 pm on May 5th, 2013
Mama Luna, I apologize for leading Belle Starr astray. You are the best mom, to me and Belle Starr. I think the tatu Belle Starr wants is a great idea. Just the problem of getting the pug’s photo.
I do not want a tutu, but Belle would look lovely in a pink, sparkly one. And what is this I heard about Belle’s new dog jacket?
I hope you will forgive me.

HOH, i made a joke for ou around 12:50 or so. Must have been a bad joke because no one got it. ;(
7:49 pm on May 5th, 2013
Melanie – I got your morels joke and thought that was clever, but didn’t say anything. Like Jack Reacher, I said nothing.
7:55 pm on May 5th, 2013
Thank you MollyPop’s Mom! Jack Reacher . . snicker.
I wonder if I’ll be able to read that series now. I keep seeing someone else’s face.
Hope your daughter has a wonderful birthday. You are way too young to have a daughter that old.

That’s okay, BSD. Zoë was banging on the furnace ( in the unfinished, dirt floor basement ), I was upstairs and called out, “Are you trapped in the furnace, and can’t get out?” The invectives spewing from the basement were impressive.
Picture of the painted salad wall. No paint touches the soon to be soil.

Tell us more about the salad wall.
8:24 pm on May 5th, 2013
Interesting plantings going on!
Hi, Finn.
The Whooping Cranes winter at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and folks with binoculars come by the bus loads to see them. (from a distance)

I did not get a picture, but I saw the most beautiful teal blue bird, some sort of bunting. And the most beautiful pink and red spoonbill.
8:38 pm on May 5th, 2013
sorry Macy Mom’s…I asked the question of about their winter home of Mollypop’s Mom instead of you, but I am glad you caught my goof up. People do the same thing here…the binoculars and viewing them from a distance. Mom won’t drive me through it so I could take my own tour.
9:03 pm on May 5th, 2013
Happy Birthday Pookey!
Hey Finn. Welcome.
Love the wall and asparagus bed, Melanie.
Speaking of walls, Barb has hit one and is saying goodnight. See you tomorrow.

Wall!…Someone here hit a wall too…sniff!…But we are still up watching a foreign movie of all things….grunt!…What the hell?
9:29 pm on May 5th, 2013
Guess what? Tomorrow is recycling day! I forgot about it. Boxes are now cut up, and in the appropriate container. Plastics, cans and glass are all stomped and are in their container. Both were wheeled out to the street using the dolly (how the carpola did that become it’s name), had the bear proofing apparatus (rocks) put on top. Wish I remembered I had to do that before all the garden work. slapping myself in the back of the head
Now I’m zonked beyond zonked.

Melanie!…Sounds like you make life so hard on yourself…sneeze!…Just get Staff to Re-Cycle for you….heh!
11:19 pm on May 5th, 2013
Welcome to Finn’s Mom. He is sure a pretty GSD.
We are all hoping that Lady starts feeling better.
I am slowly getting unpacked. The quilt room doesn’t look much worse than it did when I arrived and the library is starting to clear out. The garden distracts me from unpacking though.
It was decent weather here but our old asparagus bed, unlike Melanies, has absolutely nothing peeking out. Mr.Staff is working hard to clean up the garden. Tomorrow I am going to measure for a couple of raised beds and we will buy the lumber on Tuesday and some peat to amend the soil with on Wednesday. Should be an interesting gardening year. I have always wanted to try raised beds. This year I seem to have the energy.
I am interested to see how Melanie’s wall of green looks. Mr.Staff said to buy a package of mixed greens and lettuces and you can try them all and find out what you like for next year.
