Chetspeak (4): A Yiddish Moment

“Hold it,” Bernie said, raising his hand in the stop sign as we were about to step inside, “have you dusted for prints yet?” We’d worked together a lot, me and Bernie, so I shouldn’t have been surprised. He had a nose, even kind of big for a human, but what did it do?

“Yup,” said Rick. “Bupkis.”

Bupkis? I remembered no perps of that name.

“Where’d you learn a word like that?” Bernie said.

“Counterman at the Brooklyn Deli,” said Rick.

Bernie laughed. Whatever the joke was, I’d missed it, but I knew the Brooklyn Deli, a downtown joint I didn’t get to nearly enough.

    Greetings!

    Happy Egg Day!
O’Howlers: I am glad to hear your mom’s paw is on the mend.

Sammie: I hope you are taking nice long slenderizing walks.

Siber-H? Rio and I are worrit. You are missing your team’s winning ways. I just miss you.

RIO! Your Rockies rule! I am looking forward to working on many fund-raising Snowhook projects with you. I am at your service.

Rebecca: It is true. Grizzly and I had never held a puppy. The meaning of life is now known to us.

I’m here. Mom was kinda sick yesterday and didn’t get the computer turned on for me. She is fine today. Thank you all for missing me. I missed you. Mom slept through the baseball game, but I watched it. It wasn’t nearly as much fun to watch alone…without Rio.
I’m getting very nervous because the Rockies keep winning.

Excellent post today. I did not know that “bupkis” was Yiddish. Those dam goats are everywhere.
A good deli is non-existent in these parts. It’s one of the perks of visiting Minneapolis.
I am partially packed and will be ready to leave early tomorrow. Will stay in Fort St. John tomorrow night, then on to Vancouver and a few days in Bellingham and into Mpls late Friday.

Morning all. Guess what? We had (unintentional) Egg Day. Seems Mama was feeling pretty feisty about her slowly healing bum flipper. She was making breakfast for Daddy and had just gotten his over- easy eggs perfect. She spun around to serve them and the “no-stick” pan proved itself. One egg arced gracefully through the air and landed on the floor at Daddy’s feet. Our rule here is that any food that lands on the floor is legally ours.
We did obey the command “wait”, until it was cool enough. Then came that magnificent release word” ok”. And in baseball terms, that egg was “outta theah”.

Got up early this morning and met Josh over at Menards (big box home improvement store). He came in his pickup and brought all the lumber back for our raised garden beds. He said he had no idea that we were getting that much wood! Now it is in our garage. First step done.

Need to look up B.Stover’s pondering.

This morning Grace and I went to the Gluten Free Baker (Over the hills and through the woods) and picked up my birthday cake. We were early, and I decided to let Grace out at the very LARGE lake near the bakers. Got her out, we walked to the beach, she looked at her feet, she looked at the lake (still ice on it in sections), and then headed for the car. snicker

Rio, There has to be something your friend can do to compromise with Mama Grump. Why don’t they take turns grocery shopping? If she doesn’t drive, drag her to the store and let her make the decisions. Tell her they will take alternate weeks for meal planning and prep. She pushes your friend’s buttons way too often.

Siber-H: welcome back! We still have a couple of Plunderers checking for coats. Right now Rose, Rebecca and I are on the quest for 3-4 more of coat #2 in grey/black and then we will have a full set. With a full set Rebecca will sew the Chet patch on them and the dogs will wear these “team jackets” at the ceremonial start in Anchorage next year. If we meet this goal, I will pledge money to have “Snowhook Kennel” professionally embroidered on them. They will look so snazzy!

Rio: no groceries means no treaties. Just saying…

We would very much like to donate toward the team jackets. Mom tried to find one, but as many of you know, shopping is not her strong suit. We dearly love the idea of a properly outfitted team. We also think we need extra coats, because of certain team members who like to chew.
How many of #1 and how many of #2 coats were located and purchased?

Oh dear – we seem to have created a monster. We have a rule for Sunday morning breakfast – if the tv is on, no gloom and doom news or sports are allowed. This morning, AS A JOKE, Mama put on a Frankie and Annette beach movie. Daddy had never even heard of them (he was in the military during their heyday), and he just thought it was a fun, stupid, silly movie. What we didn’t realize is that the movie was part of a Frankie and Annette bikini movie marathon. He is still watching them. This one is “Haunted Bikini” with Boris Karloff.
    oh dear.

“The Tigers game…,” “the Rockies game…,” “The whatevers game” do not need apostrophes since the name (Tigers) is being used as an adjective. Thus, SiberH’s statement is correct without the apostrophe. And I never used red pencil.

There are a bunch of red-winged blackbirds calling to each other (we love that sound), a woodpecker hard at work down by the creek, and just now a bluebird came by to help Mom inspect Pop’s tree-clearing work. He is getting that area ready for the chicken coop. We are hard at work planning our tunnels.

    Dawson,
Mr.Staff just told me that is a chance of snow all week in our home town in North Dakota. However, just so you know, the snow is almost all gone here. It is still on the shaded side of buildings but no where else. I am saving a luminary in the freezer to light when you are here. And the quilt room bedroom is all ready for you.

Mollypop’s Mom I had to enlarge the picture to see that little groundhog. Did you know they love dandelion flowers? They also love old stone/boulder foundations.

I am sewing a bathrobe for Dad. They are about all he wears now and the 2 robes he had were shredded. I took the worst one and made a pattern. Then my SIL came over with a thick heavy terry cloth robe (from Victoria Secrets but we are not telling him) that I could cut down to his size. I took about 8 inches off the arms and length and it is OK but a bit heavy.
It is about impossible for a person to find a robe his size. He weighs 130+ and is less than 5 feet tall now. Boys robes are seasonal. Did you know that? When I tried to find them I was stymied at every turn. Either they weren’t in stock until the fall (LLBean was just what I wanted and theirs is not due until August) or they were cartoon characters or had huge hoods. (Dad doesn’t want hoods)
So I bought some soft flannel (Thursday)and started the process Friday, Washing the fabric cutting out the pattern etc. The day I got the fabric I got a note from LLBean. The backordered until August robe is shipped.

Soon he will have 3 new robes.

I did look on Amazon, but not on eBay. I looked at Target and Macy’s and jcPenneys and sears and herbergers. I looked at Lands end and LL Bean and the Robe Co.com and all sorts of places. Boys robes size 14-16 are nonexistent.
Of course I could have gotten the ones with the dragon spikes on the hood. I really liked them, but they had Hoods dammit. But the spikes were cute.

Now Men’s robes are all over the place. Yes with hoods. But I suppose I could have cut that off. However do you know what they think you ought to pay for a Man’s robe? ahahahhaahhaha. Like I am going to pay 95.00 for a ROBE!

And, Bella, Do as Melanie says and Do Not, under any circumstances, try picking up that hankerchief!

Blah! Just about the time we adjusted to the blog time stamp being on “winter time” and did the math in our heads (lots are better than 1) we now have “summer time”:( Makes us tired ponder it.

    B. Stover, I like the new housekeeper on Elementary. snicker
There was some snow in NYC, but nothing like that. I think they had help.

Robes! (and slippers). The thought of taking a robe apart to make a pattern? Yikes.

While rearranging my rooms I needed several heavy items to go up and down the stairs. Golinka said I needed a dumbwalter. None were available. I still haven’t found a place to build the dumbwaiter.

My solution? I took dog leads, attached them to the babygate, vacuum, all the cleaning supplies, and a heavy bag of my clean clothes and proceeded to lift them – hand over hand – to the upstairs.

Lifting I can do. Carrying things on stairs? Nope.

Bad-Dream!…sniff!…I must be having a bad dream. I think I missed all of season 5 of Mad Men…wheeze!…How could this have happened? Wait! This can’t be possible, maybe I just missed some of the last episodes….gasp!…We are going to watch the last 4 or 5 episodes from season 5 before we set eyes on season 6…grunt!…The last thing I remember is the gal advertiser leaving the office after getting a new job. I thought that was the end of season 5. Bear, am I losing my man-men mind?

Crisis!…Averted…heh!…Weird though, we watched a re-cap of season 5 and nothing looked familiar. It was all new stuff. So I freaked out and thought I had missed the whole damned season…heh!…Right now we are watching the last episode of season 5 and I’m pretty damned sure we have seen it before…heh!whew!heh!

I am getting interested in Mad Men. They said in the Sunday paper that the Mad Men encounter the women’s lib movement this year (It’s 1968 in their time). Heh heh heh.

Hmmm. What kind of testing are you doing, Rio? Oh, wait, what was I thinking? A test on bases of balls’ stats.

I am now in my warm bed with no toys surrounding me.

I am concerned that since I put the bed up on its legs again, I’m going to fall out, or run into a wall. I moved the bed. I will have to remember to turn on the light before I move.

He has watched WLIIA over and over for years and claims he never remembers them.

Staff: That was a stampede start. There is a stampede race for the Willow winter carnival. Teams of two start sitting in their sleeping bags. When the race starts, they have to get out of their sleeping bags, put on their boots, store their sleeping bag, melt a pot if snow, harness the dogs and hook them up before they can take off. Several years ago the giant did it. My two-legged couldn’t because of her back surgery so a neighbor road in the sled. That year the race was two laps around the lake before crossing the finish line. The finish line had money and gift certificates clipped to the line with clothespins. As teams crossed under the finish line they would grab as much money thu could. Guess who won that year? Us! The Outlaws were on the line and in their youthful exuberance lapped several teams!

BelleStar: I can’t watch the stampede race on the you tube link because it has dogs barking on it. My dogs go crazy.

Well, we had 3-4 days of weather in the 30s and everyone was in a good mood and spring seemed just around the corner. Then it abruptly went back to being barely above zero during the day and below zero at night. Painful. Things were going so well when it was warm. So I have briefly (for a few nanoseconds) considered truly moving south rather than just to Anchorage but then I’d be further away from Snowhook and the Iditarod. Not going to happen…

When I take a look at your web site in Safari, it looks fine however, if opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping issues.

My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing many months of hard work due to no back up.
Do you have any methods to prevent hackers?

he escrito por mi cuenta. La verdad es que no se si son tan buenos
como los tuyos pero intento hacer algo a este respecto. Que bien es encontrarte en internet y espero
que prosigas escribiendo que por acá ya posees un fan.
