Chet: From A Fistful Of Collars
Only money! What a thing to say: our finances were a mess. But I started to cheer up, partly because Bernie told me to and partly because, well, how long can you stay down in the dumps?
– coming Sept. 11. 2012.
Welcome Terri, ear-thing dude.

Bernie will never learn. (Will the cover be posted here also?)
Good morning Chet and all.
7:33 am on March 21st, 2012
Hi there, B!
I guess will have to keep an eye on the blog background.
Very foggy today, high temperatures expected in the 70’s!
Greetings All!
7:35 am on March 21st, 2012
Hi Rose. It’s going to be 83 here today. My brother is on vacation in the Saint Martin area and it’s 80 there. But this is Michigan!!!
7:56 am on March 21st, 2012
The weather certainly has been unusual this year, hasn’t it? We may be seeing 80 on Thursday and Friday, but then the weekend calls for rain, with temps in the mid-50’s. Go figure!
7:59 am on March 21st, 2012
Good Morning Rose and B.Stover! I’ve tried to find the cover art but all I’m finding is the following. I have also found them in red.
Patsy is better this morning. The tile on the rug (duct taped down) with a fan directly on her helped. It was rather cold in my bedroom this morning, but she made it through the night without waking. That is the first good night sleep we’ve both had since the weather turned summery on us.
8:47 am on March 21st, 2012
I’m glad Patsy is feeling better.
8:56 am on March 21st, 2012
I’m glad Patsy is feeling better, and that you both slept well.

This is the 327th birthday anniversary of J.S. Bach.

I have pre-ordered my copy of Fistful of Collars. Yipee, I can’t wait to read it.
The Prof and I are going to see the restored 70th anniversary version of Casablanca on the big screen this evening. This is to celebrate its DVD release, and will be screened simultaneously throughout the US.
Is it a holiday? Where is everyone??
9:24 am on March 21st, 2012
Hello All. Mom is busy at work, and then she reads Winterdance to us in the evenings. We promise to finish it soon and mail it to Bear.
9:33 am on March 21st, 2012
I’m looking forward to seeing the cover of FOC.
I bet Natasha could get us an arc of FOC.
I am glad Patsy is feeling better. Our weather is going to slowly warm up, so maybe yours will turn cooler.
9:42 am on March 21st, 2012
I believe that the ear bling will be a hit amongst The Nation Within …
Thans for the Patsy’s thumbs up. She is taking at easy today. As am I.
Hmmm, maybe I’ll read something?
9:46 am on March 21st, 2012
I’m not wearing ear bling.
10:06 am on March 21st, 2012
I have never seen you as a canine bling type!
Dan is writing again. Not sure what. It takes him a long time. He gets tired easily. And the lessons I have given him in the iPaw are sticking with him!
He is happy. THANK DOG!
10:20 am on March 21st, 2012
Good morning all. Warm here too. Snow peas are up in the garden, as well as onions, chives and garlic. Rhubarb is peaking up too.
FOD is coming out one day before Barb’s b-day, so guess what she is giving herself for a gift this year!
Melanie, glad Patsy is feeling good. Joey is hanging in there too. They were concerned about leaving him this weekend to go to Florida, but think it will be OK. Their housesitter came over last night, and it seems like she will be able to manage his special needs while they are gone.
10:28 am on March 21st, 2012
I’m glad Patsy is feeling better. I never thought about this early summer weather affecting dogs that still had their winter coats. Mollypop was always groomed so I don’t even know if she got a winter coat of fur or not. It always seemed the same to me and also with little Sammie.
10:29 am on March 21st, 2012
Hi everyone. Another day of errands. Today they are going to Cross The Bridge.
For years, a local bridge over a very wide river was under construction and only under dire circumstances did anyone from this side Cross The Bridge as it could literally take an hour or more each way.
Nowadays the construction is long over and traffic flows very easily in both directions, but everyone got so used to the trauma of having to go over the river that even today, if we have things to do over there, we have to coordinate all the stops we will make, so there will only be one trip across The Bridge.
10:32 am on March 21st, 2012
I saw Casablanca on the big screen during the 50th anniversary. Before that I hadn’t considered it to be humorous but at that showing the audience laughed throughout.
What ear bling?
10:35 am on March 21st, 2012
T%G Please tell your mom to check her SDD. no hurry
10:37 am on March 21st, 2012
T%G Please tell your mom to check her SDD. no hurry
Stover, I don’t know what ear bling. Melanie brought it up and I just thought I could put my two cents worth in.
10:37 am on March 21st, 2012
T&G, have a good trip.
Barb and MagPie, I know what the weather reports say, but I don’t trust them. Many a year we’ve had a two foot snowfall in March or April. So no gardening yet.
MollyPop’s Mom, sorry to hear the skiing is over. I can still see some snow on one of the ski hills when I go down the mountain, but not sure there’s enough cover. It only got down to 48 degrees last night so they would not have been able to make any.
Because Patsy had puppies and was then spayed her coat is a bit different than other female Newfs her age that were spayed when they were young.
Hmmm. the best way to describe her coat is … a huge puff ball! The groomer was able to take out a great deal of the undercoat, But she is still a hug puff ball!
Newfs have two coats the undercoat for winter and cold water, the over coat for pretties.

10:40 am on March 21st, 2012
duh How did that happen? I can see I need to go outside and dig for awhile or maybe my toenails need to be trimmed…NOT
10:43 am on March 21st, 2012
Melanie, The only things we have planted are cold-hardy, so even if we get cold weather or snow, they will be OK. Spinach Barb planted late last summer actually wintered over and is growing again. We are not foolhardy enough to plant the more delicate plants in March or even early April.
10:44 am on March 21st, 2012
Good Morning Everyone.
We here are having a tough Time with this Leap Forward in the Hours.
Getting up later which means later evenings too.
The birds and plants think it is spring. It is not…temperature-wise at least.
Melanie: Two very good pieces of news: Patsy (and you) sleeping better and Dan writing again.
A Big Hurrah for Dan!!! Do you think it’s the iPaw that is doing the trick? Nana has been telling her sister that maybe this would be just the bit of encouragement the BIL needs also.
Barb&Magpie: It is difficult to leave one of us guys even in the best of times to go on a trip, or so I’m told. Good to know Joey will have loving care while they are away.
Royals: Did a double take there for a minute.
11:06 am on March 21st, 2012
I don’t know why Dan is now writing. Maybe he decided that we were telling the truth when we told him we were not here for his entertainment.
The Decorah Eagles are looking good.
YSAS took a picture of himself in 1950’s garb. Snicker.
11:18 am on March 21st, 2012
Nice picture YSAS took of himself!
Communication issues here this am. Cel was out overnight…now working but loses 3G signal. Land line no dial tone. Yikes! Cut off from the world! Wait. The computer is working…thank you very much.
11:28 am on March 21st, 2012
Mom just read the part Siber warned us about. She called us all choked up.
12:11 pm on March 21st, 2012
Chuckling a bit here….YSAS kind of looks like that phony Rockefeller guy… 🙂
12:14 pm on March 21st, 2012
Rose – I know just who you mean and YSAS does look like him.
12:17 pm on March 21st, 2012
Rose, You are so right. He could play the part of Clark Rockefeller!
We did a double take over the Crossing the Bridge part too. Sigh of relief here!
Going to go read and nap. BBL
12:22 pm on March 21st, 2012
Damn!…My friend takes a day off from the not very busy-place and messes up my whole schedule…grunt!…She got some errands done that she was not looking forward to, like talking to Insurance people…sniff!…That turned out really good though and she will be saving over 500.00 a year by switching insurance…heh!…Beau and I are licking our lips at the prospect of more treats and tennis balls…chuffle!… She now has Landlord Insurance on my other house…sniff!…Took her long enough…grunt!
12:47 pm on March 21st, 2012
Rio: Sounds like your friend had a productive day!
How is Beau, btw?
Maybe I’m a little slow, but the significance of Fistful of Collars just hit me……
1:05 pm on March 21st, 2012
I must be slower than you are, Rose, because I am not seeing the significance of FOD, unless it’s the Clint Eastwood thing.
It is way too nice to be indoors, but mom is stuck at the busy place. No word from the rehab place yet. I told Chad to keep calling.
1:07 pm on March 21st, 2012
Fistful of Collars…It could be a take off of a spaghetti western or it could be a description of a fight at the dog park.
I don’t know. It is a clever title.
1:12 pm on March 21st, 2012
Rose? Do you get something different out of the title?
They should cast YSAS in Mad Men. He looks perfect.
1:53 pm on March 21st, 2012
Spence has a thing about wordplay on the titles of movies for the Chet titles. Aren’t To Fetch a Thief and Dog Who Knew Too Much similar? (Of course, DOI and THAT are examples of wordplay on common sayings.
2:30 pm on March 21st, 2012
I’m reminded of a story about William Faulkner. He was having a hard time coming up with a title to his latest novel. One day he and his wife were leaning against a fence and looking out into the distance when his wife said, “The light in August is different.” Faulkner said, “That’s it!” and he went in and titled his manuscript Light In August.
2:31 pm on March 21st, 2012
Yay! The land line is working. Very traumatic to have it go out, especially at the same time as the cel, since it is my go-to phone when the cel loses power.
B: We have reached the same conclusion. Our favorite author does have a clever way with book titles.
Siber: I agree…YSAS would be perfect in Mad Men…also Boardwalk Empire.
2:36 pm on March 21st, 2012
Hmm. Cool story about Faulkner.
This is from T & G: Buffalo spotted in Western MA! (I bet it took those two corgis a long time to herd these creatures into a group!)
2:52 pm on March 21st, 2012
Dawg, I should think slower when I type….I meant the significance of the RELEASE date…..
I’m hitting my head on my desk…….
2:54 pm on March 21st, 2012
dumb, dumb, dumb,
I’ll just keep quiet for now…
dumb, dumb, dumb
2:56 pm on March 21st, 2012
Melanie!…Where are the mountains in your photo?…sniff!
Soaked!…Get this, me and Beau were out back and I heard the hose being turned on in the front…snort!…So I huckered down under some patio furniture and Beau…heh!…Beau decided to go around the side and check-out what the noice was (a hose)…wheeze!…Well, he peered out of the chain link gate to see what those guys were doing and someone yelled, “Get Beau!!”….chorkel!…Then I heard Beau running back here and all that laughing…heh!
3:00 pm on March 21st, 2012
Rose, that is okay. Your statement got us all thinking about how Spence came up with the title of FOC.
We have montains right behind the herd of buffalo that is closest to us. Mom has never driven me to see those buffalo. I wonder why.
3:09 pm on March 21st, 2012
Mom says there are buffalo in the hills near us. The horses hate riding past them. We wouldn’t mind seeing them, but just like Siber, we have been excluded.
3:39 pm on March 21st, 2012
O.Howlers: Please tell your mom not to feel like she has to rush through the book. We are a bit backed up here too, what with the Last Great Race and all.
Hey! I’ve seen buffalo up close and personal. We won’t get into the chasing…er I mean herding…part.
5:33 pm on March 21st, 2012
Down-time!….snort!…We are settling down to watch season 3 of Damages…sniff!…We already watched most of these episodes when they were aired, but we had missed most of season 1 and season 2…grunt!…So now we are all caught up and know whats really going on…maybe…..wuffle!
5:53 pm on March 21st, 2012
Riö: Mountains? What are mountains? If anything the hills should be in that picture. T&G live in the lowlands. Have no idea how they disappeared my hills.
I am stuffing Dan under the quilt. His blood pressure has been a problem. Even though his medication is being upped, it’s still going up. Call to cardiologist tomorrow.
5:58 pm on March 21st, 2012
Dan!…The Man!…snort!…Take care of him! We know about blood pressure here…sniff!…Apparently me and Beau cause a lot of it. There are also pretzels. Dan doesn’t eat salty pretzels does he?…wuffle!…My friend gets in trouble when she eats salty pretzels…grunt!
6:12 pm on March 21st, 2012
As I recall, we tried to help Spence with the title of one of the books but we couldn’t agree on any one title.
6:17 pm on March 21st, 2012
Hello Plunderpack. Still holding down the fort here. Mom is still sick and has slept the day away. She said that she may be turning the corner on this thing. Huh. I turn corners all the time to look for my bones and ropes.
Feel better Dan.
LOL @ Beau.
6:22 pm on March 21st, 2012
Riö, we have hidden the salt and he’s enjoying salt free potato chips.
B.Stover, we did. Was it T-FAT or The Dog Who?
Jasper, once she turns the corner I bet you’ll get lots of tummies.
Cooling down now. Feels good.
6:22 pm on March 21st, 2012
Title!… Spencer should just ask me if he ever needs a new Title….snort!… I always have a great title on paw like this one, “Two Pugs In A Pickle”…grunt! … Now if that’s not a great title I’ll eat some ones couch cushion…wheeze!
6:39 pm on March 21st, 2012
I think it was TFAT but I’m not sure.
6:50 pm on March 21st, 2012
Not feeling great here either. Sort of like a cold and sore throat starting. Bummer.
Dan, feel better.
I think it was the last book, wasn’t it, when we tried to come up with a title?
6:55 pm on March 21st, 2012
Bad!…Spencer had chosen a really bad!bad!bad! title for the third book….snort!…We persuaded him it was a bad choice, even though Stover always said she liked it. It ended up being To Fetch A Thief and everyone loved that Title…snort!…Right now the really bad name eludes me. Thank dawg!…heh!
6:57 pm on March 21st, 2012
Snort!…I just remembered the bad title!…heh!…. To Bark Perchance To Bite…heh!snort!heh!….Its still BAD!
7:23 pm on March 21st, 2012
That’s right! And I still like it…..Hamlet sort of.
7:30 pm on March 21st, 2012
But the title didn’t have Princess in it.
7:37 pm on March 21st, 2012
Tupper and Gilly please check your SDD.
THanks,
Staff

Mom just finished reading Winterdance to us. What a great book! Youse are all going to love it. Thanks for loaning it to us,Wolfie.
If we had read this book before this year’s Iditarod, we would have been in a perpetual panic for AJ and The Team.
Siber, he tells about The Burn and Dalzell Gorge in detail, and also a part called Happy Canyon. We think that is The Steps. Do you know?
8:05 pm on March 21st, 2012
This is for Barb and Maggie…
http://chetthedog.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Chick_em.wmv
If Mike Baker won’t let it through (it’s a wmv file) I will email it to you.
8:09 pm on March 21st, 2012
Winterdance!…We here are perfectly happy being ignorant of all the hazordous things that AJ and the A-Team have to go through…gulp!…Not reading that book right now, or anytime soon…grunt!
8:12 pm on March 21st, 2012
Howlers, we thought that Happy Canyon was the Steppes too.
Oh Beau, beware the hose, hee hee.
Melanie, we lol’d at the image of you stuffing Dan under the quilt. Kind of like “it’s for your own good dang it”. Please allow him a breathing space.
8:17 pm on March 21st, 2012
Fellow Sibers, Yes, Happy Canyon is the Steps. The river that runs through the canyon is called Happy River.
Poor Beau, he might not like water any better than I do.
8:22 pm on March 21st, 2012
Rose: That date you mentioned earlier caught my attention and has piqued my curiosity too. Not that it takes much. After all, Kurious is my middle name.
Boy, I know what you mean. Some things we just want to erase, erase.
Staff: No he didn’t. It come through in code.
Melanie: Hoping the docs can get Dan’s BP under control.
8:25 pm on March 21st, 2012
I actually had some time to read and didn’t fall asleep! “Cold Hands Warm Heart” has some great stories in it. The writing? Ummm.
Anyhoo, King was writing about a 2 day race, The Bull’s Eye-Angel Creek Race, where he was racing to get in shape for the Yukon. Thinking, since he was a seasoned musher, that he didn’t need to pay attention to the race master’s strong suggestion that only 12 dogs should be used, he used 14. He was also the last sled going out.
Saying his dogs were eager is like saying that Riö passes gas just a little! First they took off to catch up with all those other teams and decided that the car road would be a great place to run the race. After sparks flying and considering looping his snowhook on to a coming car, a bunch of volunteers get him going in the right direction.
Then came the ice. His sled turned over, he kept a hold until he hit his head, flew off and watched his team leave with the sled hitting a rut and bouncing back upright.
He starts running behind them. No musher coming along to pick him up!
The team catches up to the musher ahead and he sees that King is off. So he stops his team and snowhooks them, King’s team stops and gets tangled up. He untangles them and uses the snowhook to attach them to a 15 foot spruce.
As he’s about to make the turn to the next point, here comes King’s team dragging the spruce, roots and all! He tells the people what’s happened and they stop King’s team and attach them to a pick up truck. They got to rest while King finally got up there.
Why am I thinking of Siber-H and the OleyHowlers right now?
Bedtime. TTFN

Dan: Rest comfortably under the Quilt tonight. It is a very healing place to be.
I just know any minute Melanie is going to say TTFN.
Heh! Tonight we’re beating her to it – Bear

Yawn…stretch…I just woke from my second and probably final nap of the day. It takes us a couple of weeks to start feeling normal again. Our sleep schedules are way off.
Note to self: Leave salt free snacks at center of quilt next time I’m there.
8:29 pm on March 21st, 2012
Noooooo!
8:33 pm on March 21st, 2012
Melanie!….Is this a Stephen King or a Jeff King novel…heh!snort!faaarrrt!
8:38 pm on March 21st, 2012
Melanie, we hope Dan’s BP gets under control soon. You are taking such good care of him.
Rio, we don’t blame you for not wanting to know all of the trail trials (try saying that 5 times fast).
King’s story sort of reminds us of Mom’s story about when they first moved to the farm. Workers were installling all the stuff up in the barn and she wanted to keep Misha (Sasha’s husband-to-be) out from under them. They cabled him to a cemented-in washline pole. Well, Misha was not used to being tied, so he just ran on up to the barn, wash pole and all. Heh heh
8:45 pm on March 21st, 2012
We laughed so hard during the runaway team part of King’s book.
That happens in the movie, Snow Dogs, also.

You had to stir him up, Masquers. Now he wants to ride us on up to bed.
Good night all. It sure feels different going to bed at our old time now that the Iditarod is over.
9:10 pm on March 21st, 2012
Idol!…Remember way back when I said Phillip Phillips would be the best? …heh!…I still think he is the best this year on American Idol…snort!…I am not allowed to Vote for him on my little Go Phone…sniff!

Rebecca, when you have time, could you tell us how W-L did in this year’s race?

9:53 pm on March 21st, 2012
Not sure if anyone is still up – but we are just getting on line after a LONG day.
First it was up to the clay place for a while. Then it was over the bridge for all the errands there. It is a big business center, so it took lots of time to get sneakers for Dad and some stuff at the craft store, and some stuff at the do-it-yourself hardware store,(the buffalo farm is next door to that, and it required some time to just sit and admire these magnificent animals. Then on to the discount gourmet food store and then the just cheap grocery store, and a few other errands in between. And once home, it was time for a really quick dinner, and then Mama and Dad both had meetings to go to, and just got home.
So – goodnight to everyone who has headed off to bed.
Hello to everyone still up
Mama says she got lots of emails and handled them all.
And now, she is going to check up on what had been going on all day on this here blog.
9:58 pm on March 21st, 2012
TTFN from Staff and the kitties. Staff says her legs have ‘the wigglies’ and she can’t sit down any more. So off we go to get ready for bed.
Night all.

Thanks for the welcome! “Terri: ear-thing dude” ??? What’s that all about … perhaps you know the breed (Belgian Shepherd – Tervuren) and are aware that they can move their ears around like a cat. Chet is 100 lbs. The pictures on the first two books look like a possible Belgian Shepherd – Groenendael … or perhaps a mix of GSD and Groenendael, given his weight is high for a Groenendael.
