Chet At Mesquite Road For The First Time
What a nice kitchen! Not big, but full of light. On the counter lay fast-food containers—a very good sign, fast food being one of the best human inventions going—not quite empty and really not all that old, to judge from the odor. The table was mostly covered in papers, a big glass of bourbon—the scent impossible to miss— topping one stack.
“Everything to your satisfaction?”
I turned and there was Bernie watching me from the kitchen doorway. What was the question? I’d missed it.
“Just don’t get too comfortable,” Bernie said.
That one blew right by me. Was there even such a thing? I wagged my tail, one of my go-to moves.
From A Cat Was Involved (the Chet and Bernie “origin story” now available for download.) ($.99!)
Welcome Aspen Ann, Shadow, Bear.

Good morning, y’all! I agree about that fast food thing. Mmmmmm, french fries!!!
9:34 am on August 20th, 2012
Good MOrning Kirby T and everyone!
The Honda sounds like the rear end is falling off. We’re taking it in this morning and leaving it. I hope it’s just because I didn’t know how to put the spare tire in correctly . . .
Beautiful night last night. 47 degrees. Patsy slept on the bed most of the night. Luckily, she got in just when I got in bed so I was able to hog the blankets on my side.
The house guys are back this morning. Painting and still replacing some more clapboard and window sills.
Dan has written a short story! I will see if he’ll let me post it at the mail box.
9:35 am on August 20th, 2012
Oh, I forgot . . Tenzing is one beautiful hunk of dog!!
9:36 am on August 20th, 2012
Chet: I agree that there is no such thing as too comfortable!
Good morning all.
9:58 am on August 20th, 2012
Cabin!….In the Woods looks awesome and very comfortable from here….snort!… I can’t wait to move in!….Woooooo! ….I can bring my warm soft bed with all my baseball toys, right?…grunt!
9:59 am on August 20th, 2012
GAH!
10:15 am on August 20th, 2012
Sigh…Mom’s getting ready to go out and run her usual Monday morning errands before she goes to work. And she won’t be home again until late tonight. Which wasn’t so bad when Dad was home all day. But now he’s back at school, and between football practice and duty he won’t be home until even later than Mom. So now it’s just me and those rotten kats home alone all day — and half the night. Hey, maybe I can have some fun with those kats — any suggestions, T&G? And don’t suggest the box-’em-up-and-send-’em-to-Alaska thing, because that hasn’t been working so well for you!!
10:19 am on August 20th, 2012
Oh no!
Beau has taken over Rio’s bed and he’s moving to Alaska!
10:23 am on August 20th, 2012
Dawson: Somehow I don’t think that’s gonna happen!
Bye, y’all! To paraphrase Tony the Tiger, hope your day is grrrrrrrrreat!!!
10:32 am on August 20th, 2012
I love it when Beau leaves his info on the computer and Rio doesn’t notice and posts….snicker.
Thanks Dawson for pointing it out. I was wondering what the GAH! was all about.
It NEVER happens at this house….ahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahah
10:32 am on August 20th, 2012
Melanie: We can’t wait to read Dan’s short story!
Sounds like you are feeling a wee bit better today, but the poor Honda…off to the M-E-C-H-A-N-I-C.
Kirby: It’s no fun being home alone all day. You have my sympathies buddy.
So, Beau, you are now sleeping in Rio’s cool soft bed with his favorite baseball toys?
Tenz is a very handsome, hardworking guy. Snowbella and the Giant are fortunate to have him on the job.
10:33 am on August 20th, 2012
Hi, Dawson. I was thinking of you earlier – Gordon Lightfoot, Canadian Railroad Trilogy track in the car.
Tenzing is regal!
Have a good week, Everybody.
10:34 am on August 20th, 2012
Oh No, now Beau has baseball toys too! Wasn’t one Pug with baseball toys in his soft warm bed enough for this blog? LOL
Beautiful dog, beautiful cabin, Rebecca and AJ. Is that for winter guests?
10:46 am on August 20th, 2012
Moving!…No!No!NO!…sniff!…Beau keeps forgetting to remove his logon info from this here blog and it is starting to really tick me off…grump!…He and my bed and toys will not be going anywhere near my Cabin In The Woods…gruffle!huffle!
11:03 am on August 20th, 2012
Masquers: I keep forgetting…I do not want that Playing for Pizza by Grisham book back. Maybe someone else would like to read it?
Bluecat: G.Lightfoot is one of the greats. The Edmund Fitzgerald song never fails to give me goosebumps.
I went on a boat ride on Saturday across a big lake for brunch, then crusing around some islands until it was noticed the boat was taking on water. Oops. Luckily it was easily fixed…a malfunctioning bilge pump. What a great day. I want a repeat.
I’m running out of supplies…the grocery store beckons…maybe I can put it off until tomorrow.
I am not sure about one of Chet’s new friends.
11:16 am on August 20th, 2012
I’m back from my first cataract surgery. All went well and I’m at Sam’s resting. She’s taking good care of me. Tomorrow I go to the doctor’s and I’m sure he will release me to go back to skiless country.
11:18 am on August 20th, 2012
Dawson, I think I know which new friend you are talking about. I raised my brow at him too.
Rebecca, Tenzing is quite the looker! I love the little cabin! An excellent choice of color. Did my BFF contribute to any of the construction work? 🙂
Good day to all!
11:19 am on August 20th, 2012
MollyPop’s Mom, I am very glad to hear your surgery went well. Make sure Sammie tucks the quilt around you.
11:31 am on August 20th, 2012
Rose: Belle Starr has played a critical role in the building of Beau’s, I mean Rio’s cabin. Her job is to do whatever she wants and to make sure we take breaks to rub her belly.
MPM: Glad the surgery went well. I have no doubt te Sam will nurse you back to full health.
B&M: we are renting out kennel space and the small cabin to another musher. Last year she was the race official that gave AJ permission to email me to check on Rory, and when he found out about Rory’s passing, she gave him her cell phone so he could call me.
11:33 am on August 20th, 2012
MPM, Glad you are doing well. Don’t overdue it. Let yourself be pampered. Sammy can tell you how to do that.
11:33 am on August 20th, 2012
Dawson: Thanks for letting me know about Playing for Pizza as it was a rush to return it to you before you returned home. It is so seldom you find a book by Grisham that vears off from his stories of lawyers and legal maneuvers. If anyone else wants to read it give me a holler.
Your day on the lake sounds oh sooo nice.
Bluecat: Love Gordon Lightfoot here too.
B: It is one of our favorite parts of the story. Of course, they are all fast becoming favorites, lol.
Mollys Mom: I know Sammy will take good care of you…happy to hear all went well.
As we look at the calendar and realize the summer is quickly disappearing…day by day…it becomes a priority to enjoy each and every day to the fullest.

That’s good news Mollypop’s Mom.
12:04 pm on August 20th, 2012
Wose: OMD! I see what you and Dawson are talking about.
Barb&Magpie: Just a few more days! Nana says she admires you for having all your ducks in a row…whatever that means.
12:06 pm on August 20th, 2012
I went on my big car ride yesterday. We went to my girl’s college. She has a different room and I like it a lot. Her bed was just perfect for both of us so I took a little nap in it. Then we went to the car saying our goodbyes. Imagine my surprise when I got plopped back in my car seat. Hey! That wasn’t supposed to happen.
Today I have to take care of Molly’s Mom. She can’t bend over to pick me up and I like her to carry me around. In fact that’s part of how I take care of her. I also help her with her food. Dog’s work is never done!
12:14 pm on August 20th, 2012
Hello All. We are back to our boring humdrum non-vacation world. Mom thinks this is the helter skelter busy time. We don’t see it that way.
Tanzing is Woo Hoo handsome! Looks like he really knows how to handle his tool! Tee heee…thats from The Hot One.
The cabin looksgreat, and we are happy that you are helping out the very nice race volunteer who helped SJ contact you, Bella.
Aunt MollysMom, Wonderful news!!! one down and one to go. Be sure to let us know hoe your recovery gors. Hopefully, it will be fast and good. If you need Kat to help with Sammy’s loving duties, let us know. On the other hand, if you are in need of nursing care, Meashka would be your best bet, although she did begin nursing training with Kat this morning…
We had to have an emergency v-e-t call this morning, bright and early, for Shiek. He has climbed on top of that their quilt now. Mom keeps calling to ask us how he is doing. What do we know?
12:15 pm on August 20th, 2012
Grrr…that would be AJ not SJ. Whatever.
12:19 pm on August 20th, 2012
Sammie!…heh!snort!heh!… No one carries me or Beau around because someone could get hurt. All that dead-weight…sniff!
12:26 pm on August 20th, 2012
Tenzing is one handsome dude. He looks like he has a lot of Siber in him.
I didn’t expect Mollypop’s Mom to be able to report in so soon. She was in our thoughts. We are glad she is doing so well.
We love Gordon Lightfoot! My folks have seen him several times and mom has the dvd from when he did a concert that was on PBS.
Canadian Railroad Trilogy is a masterpiece. The rest of the world would not have known about the Edmund Fitzgerald going down if it weren’t for Gordon Lightfoot.
12:28 pm on August 20th, 2012
Maskers!….What episodes of Breaking Bad have you watched so far?…snort!…What do you think?
12:28 pm on August 20th, 2012
O.Howlers: With Kat, Nurse Meashka, the Quilt and Plunderer prayers, we know Shiek will soon be feeling much better.
Good thing Kat has become part of Team Smoochers. She may be joining Sammy to help take care of Aunt Molly’s Mom.
Oley Mom and Dad: It is such a shock to return to the Race of the Rats after the lazy days of vacation.
12:35 pm on August 20th, 2012
Bear, so far we have not seen any rats, and we are bored silly watching over this here farm. Mom and Pop went away to their offices, so it seems to us they are living their normal boring lives without us us us.
12:39 pm on August 20th, 2012
Rebecca, I do exactly what Belle Starr does when the Prof is doing projects around the apartment. 🙂
Bear, there is something so not right about that FOC.
12:44 pm on August 20th, 2012
Riö: We have only watched the first episode so far, but love, love, love it! It will be difficult to see this most excellent of series come to an end.
For Siber, Dawson, Bluecat and all who love Gordon Lightfoot and this song:

Wasn’t there a sone about a little cabin in the woods?
That cabin looks great. Snug and with the insulation, nice and warm. Think AJ and Bella can make cabins for all of us?
MollyPop’s Mom, take at easy, give tummies without bending over and get lots of kisses.
Did Macy’s mom go to work?
That Friend of Chet’s looks like he might be an extra for Boardwalk. I wonder if YSAS has seen him?

Just announced to other librarians that at the end of next week I’m beginning my new life as a retiree. As Don Imus so poetically put it, “Time to park the bus before the food starts falling out of my mouth.” What does this have to do with dogs, you ask. In case you haven’t seen the show on Nat Geo, there is a group out here on Long Island called Rescue Ink – a band of tattoo-wearing ex street toughs who reformed and took on a mission to help animals. I’ve met these guys a few times and, if you are an animal abuser, you don’t want to see them walking up your driveway. They’ve taken to running a no-kill animal shelter 20 minutes from my house, and I have signed up to volunteer. This may involve dog poop, but I may also help them with Web things. Only thing I won’t do is get a tattoo. While at the facility I fell utterly in love with 40 cats and 12 dogs. My wife thinks I’ll have trouble adapting to retirement. We’ll see about that.

In case you haven’t guessed, I’m the one in the middle.
1:03 pm on August 20th, 2012
Terry Ballard: congrats from one retired librarian to another. Rescue Ink is a great idea, I hope it spreads. Volunteering is a wonderful life. At the end of the month I am taking on a Meals-On-Wheels route and I look forward to it.
I adore Gordon Lightfoot and especially The Canadian Railroad Trilogy. However, I always thought there should be a banjo on the track and mentally add it when I listen to it. I saw him a few times when I was in college in the states many, many years ago.
1:05 pm on August 20th, 2012
Terry!…I love the thought of those guys going after the mean-ones…heh!heh!…Makes me chorkel!
1:06 pm on August 20th, 2012
Thanks Masquers, That is a well made video…a fine tribute to both the ship and the song. sniff
Terry, We have seen that program a few times. They are good guys. We need more like them.
Congratulations on your retirement!
Melanie, There is a song about a cabin the woods, but mom doesn’t remember any more than you do.
1:10 pm on August 20th, 2012
Congratulations Terry! Are you going to show us your tats?
snicker
1:10 pm on August 20th, 2012
Barb and Maggie — you had asked yesterday about our tomatoes. Unfortunately, we have had a mixed year in terms of experience; none of the new heirlooms we tried worked out at all, but the Cherokee Purple were terrific again. We would be more than willing to try seed harvesting for you for the Cherokee Purples if you would like, you just need to let us know what to do.
Wookie
1:18 pm on August 20th, 2012
Tomaters!….We’ve got tomaters coming out the ying-yang….snort!…Beau has even tried eating a small one that he confiscated from the garden….heh!…They later found it behind the chair where he hides all his treasures…grunt!
1:22 pm on August 20th, 2012
Sneeze!…”Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.'” Genisis 1:29
2:06 pm on August 20th, 2012
Maskers!….What was your first impression of the first scene of the first episode?….sniff!… Where Mr. White is in the café with hair and what he did to his plate of breakfast?…sneeze!
2:10 pm on August 20th, 2012
Terry: The bookends in the photo look like they mean business! Congrats on the upcoming retirement from your official job and on to new adventures in the world of volunteering.
Rose: The photo of the FOC is well done, but a tad too early for All Hallows’ Eve. He should get together with Masquers wearing the scary Halloween suit when that time rolls around.
Beau: What are you saying? We should all become vegetarians?
Tomatoes are our favorite…wish you could send some our way.
Barb&Magpie: Does Josh know about the 2 barrels of compost yet?
2:12 pm on August 20th, 2012
Terry: Congratulations on your imminent retirement although you may find you are working more than ever. Nice tats!…on your friends. If you change your mind about getting some body art, I know an excellent artist who does tatoos.
Masquers: Thanks for the link.
2:16 pm on August 20th, 2012
Riö: It kinda caught us off guard. Was this a look into the future? Tonight is episode 2.
2:17 pm on August 20th, 2012
Rio: That first scene made me very hungry.
2:19 pm on August 20th, 2012
We have had 3 ripe tomatoes. Homestead. Lots of green tomatoes and 2 are turning orange.
It was not the rear end on the Honda that was the problem. It was the brakes. Luckily, we got it in before they failed.
2:20 pm on August 20th, 2012
Speaking of tats. OTAS wants to do one for someone to celebrate Shark Week. He wants to do one of a Great White. The Royals and the Pack immediately thought of Riö. They want it to be biting his rear.
2:24 pm on August 20th, 2012
lol Melanie, but a tatoo of a great white shark is an excellent idea. They are such magnificent creatures.
2:25 pm on August 20th, 2012
Congratulations Terry.
2:26 pm on August 20th, 2012
Shark Week!

2:50 pm on August 20th, 2012
Shark!…Bite! Butt? No!…sniff!
3:10 pm on August 20th, 2012
Maskers!…I feel that first scene is a peek into the future…snort!…What was in his trunk? Was it guns and ammo? I need to re-watch that bit more closely…wheeze!
Bear!…That scene really made me hungry to because that is my favorite breakfast…sneeze!…Did you notice what he did to his breakfast? This comes up again in a later episode and it also gives us a clue about how far in the future this scene is…chuffle!
3:25 pm on August 20th, 2012
Rio: He shows his ID to the waitress for his free Birthday Breakfast. However, he must be going by an alias because when he leaves she calls him by another name.
We are trying to draw the season out…savoring each episode.
3:30 pm on August 20th, 2012
Bear!…Thats right!…sniff!…I keep wondering if he winds up alone and on the run?…snort!
3:35 pm on August 20th, 2012
Dawson: do you have a tattoo? Does anyone on this blog (or has this been discussed before when I was gone). I have none but have thought of getting an Athabascan rose — I’ve always loved the beaded version.
3:52 pm on August 20th, 2012
Melanie: Check you email.
4:21 pm on August 20th, 2012
Terry, Rescue Ink rocks!
4:51 pm on August 20th, 2012
C.Hobbit. Neither Dawson nor I have tattoos. However SIL “E” has several. One is a rose bracelet around her ankle.
5:01 pm on August 20th, 2012
Congrats to Terry on your retirement, and finding such a great volunteer opportunity. We want those guys to go after all the baddies, starting with Vick.
5:04 pm on August 20th, 2012
You all are making Mommy cry discussing tomatoes. We have tons of beautiful, delicious tomatoes here, but Mommy is afraid to eat them now. Tomorrow is her allergy test appointment, to see what made her get all those rashes and have her face swell up so bad. Cross your paws that it wasn’t tomatoes.
5:12 pm on August 20th, 2012
T.C.: Is that allergy test where they scratch 100 marks on your back then put a liquid dab of each type of food on the scratch? That test made me laugh and laugh because I am very ticklish. The nurse kept telling me to stay still and I kept saying quit tickling me and I will!
5:19 pm on August 20th, 2012
Dawson, I have no idea how they are going to do that test. I just know that my mommy will be in a very bad mental state should they tell her she can’t eat tomatoes. She tells me that she spent most of her life thinking that she hated tomatoes. Then a few years ago, she learned that she never had “real” tomatoes (unlike grocery store or hoagie shop ones) and that vine-ripened tomatoes are one of the best things in life. Truthfully, those are the only real reason she gardens.
What were the results of all those scratches they made on your back?
5:27 pm on August 20th, 2012
I’m allergic to lobster!
5:30 pm on August 20th, 2012
Thanks B.Stover. We have been watching, and will finish tomorrow, “From Time to Time”. It’s an English movie taking place after the war. Family oriented and has Maggie Smith in it. It’s excellent.
Getting it on Instant Netflix.
Time to start getting dinner ready.
5:35 pm on August 20th, 2012
T.C. We are betting it is not tomatoes.
Terry, Wonderful group, but with a name like Rescue INK, you really should think about getting a tat. Maybe just a small one to start. We hear they are addictive.
Wookie, Thanks on the seed save, but we should be able to find Cherokee Purple next year. We were hoping one of the rare ones would be an A+ tomato, and worth the work of seed saving. It is a several step process, but is fun if you like science projects. If you want to do it we can email you the steps, but don’t do it just for us. Hint – you don’t just squeeze the seeds on a paper towel and dry them.
Bear, We are not going to tell Josh about the 2 20 gal. cans of composte till he is loading the truck. He might have a few choice words, but maybe not. He knows his mama!
Barb is heading out for a couple of quick stops then drinks and dinner at Coaches with the former work associates. All have been thru the Pat Wars, so there could be some mild bashing.
Barb will be back later if she can still focus, if not we will be back tomorrow. Nice night everyone.
5:39 pm on August 20th, 2012
Congrats to Terry. I thought for sure you were the one with the beer!
Mom does not start work until next Monday. She has to get fingerprinted, then sign her contract, then get to work, all on Monday. She can’t sign until the fingerprinting so it will be a close shave. She goes to an in-service thingy on Thursday and then goes to take a look at her school.
CHobbit, are you going to be doing M-O-W during the Alaskan winter? Yikes!!
Our girl Niki has an ice cream cone tatoo and Angie has a French Kitty. Neither one is even 1′ tall. They are real ink girls, I tell ya.
5:43 pm on August 20th, 2012
Mom just received a “Man’s Best Friendship Bracelet” that she ordered from a silversmith in New York. They retail for $50, and ALL of the money is donated to your choice of one of several charities, including Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA, where we all met and adopted Kat.
Mom’s bracelet is single-strand in pearl-colored leather. But there are lots to choose from. Just in case any of you are interested, here is the link:
http://www.mansbestfriendshipbracelet.com/
Mom took a picture of the bracelet on her wrist, but then she saw how horrible her skin looks that close up!
5:50 pm on August 20th, 2012
Barb&Magpie: I imagine his reaction will depend on how much those compost cans weigh.
Heh, heh…guess we’ll see you tomorrow then…have a fun dinner exchanging stories of the Crazy One.
O.Howler’s Mom: That test Dawson described sounds like kat scratch fever. Paws crossed it’s not the tomatoes!
Melanie: Will you be posting a link to Dan’s story?
6:00 pm on August 20th, 2012
BSD, probably tomorrow. Getting tired. T.C., tell your mom that both Zoë and I have been really done in by allergies this season. We aren’t usually affected this badly. The news have said because of the weird weather we’ve been having the pollen is terrible.
6:08 pm on August 20th, 2012
Im betting too that O.Howlers’ Mom is not allergic to tomatoes. It’s good to identify what thing or things it was, so we will know tomorrow. Good luck!
7:04 pm on August 20th, 2012
Tired here too. Having an early supper then off to watch another episode of Breaking Bad.
Talk to youse tomorrow – Bear
7:08 pm on August 20th, 2012
Staff needs the address of Rio’s friend. She had it in a safe place and now can’t find it. Could some one send a SDD to her with that info?
She has a mystery package to send to her. Shhhh. Don’t tell. It is supposed to be a surprise.
7:12 pm on August 20th, 2012
I don’t think the perp is going to be tomatoes.
Howlers’ Mom, Good luck tomorrow with the allergy test.
7:16 pm on August 20th, 2012
Staff: Please check your SDD.
7:25 pm on August 20th, 2012
Pizza night here! And now a storm is close and we are ready for bed believe it or not. Good night all.
7:31 pm on August 20th, 2012
Mystery!…Package and surprise!….Wooooo!…My three favorite words…snorkel!
7:44 pm on August 20th, 2012
Rio: To me, those three words usually mean that Belle Starr ate something that didn’t agree with her. The surprise is usually the part where I find it on the floor when I least expect it.
7:48 pm on August 20th, 2012
Hi and good night to some of you.
Terry, congrats on retirement and on your choice of volunteer work. We love to hear about people getting involved in animal causes.
Rebecca, LOVED the picture of Tenzing. What a handsome fellow. He’s quite large, isn’t he? Larger that your racing team?
We also LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the painting of Lefty by GLAD! She is so talented. What an artistic couple.
Barb, enjoy your peaceful days this week. The big move will be here before you know it.
8:27 pm on August 20th, 2012

Rio,
You might have noticed I have been rather quiet about the Twins lately. Those guys can’t win a bet. They are baaaad right now.
We are closing in on the Rockies! (Or, you are closing in on them) Take your pick.
Sigh…

Mom and dad have no tattoos, but my boy Chad has James 3:16 written on his arm. And when I say James 3:16, I mean the ENTIRE verse. It was done by a ‘friend’ of his who was drinking tequila by the bottle. So it looks like one long word.
Snort!
He also has some kind of Chinese symbol on his chest. I wonder what it really means.

Macy the Min-Pin: I signed up to do Meals on Wheels until the end of October (subbing for someone else). Then I’ll see what routes are available. The sub route is perfect: 20 meals to 3 apartments so I’ll be inside a lot rather than driving around to different houses. I have to be fingerprinted and have a background check. I had this done as a teacher and as a foster parent three years ago but it has to be recent. Oh well
Wolfie: too funny. If James 3:16 looks like one long word, he needs to add a hash tag in front of it and be current. Those Chinese symbols are tricky and often wrong.

Terry: Congratulations on your retirement!
I wonder if AJ should get the portable burled arch ready so Terry can touch the top?
CHH: We here at Snowhook are tattooless. At least, I think we are—I can’t ever be too sure with the likes of Pancho and Lefty.
Tenzing is definitely blushing with all the compliments received today. Since being put on a steroid for his disease we have said good-bye to his racing weight of 58lbs and now shop for his collars in the big and tall section. He is now a 70 pounder plus. Tenzing and I have one thing in common—we’re always hungry. He is the father of the Outlaw litter so they are built like he is (and AJ, too). I tell people that the Outlaws are built like AJ—tall and all muscle. Our lead dogs tend to be a bit more petite. Rory was a speck of a thing and Annabelle is small too.
BlueCat: I believe you said Tenzing is regal. I can see how he would look that way, but that is only because you can’t see the south end of a northbound Tenzing. The latter half is green. It seems he insisted on helping AJ paint the dog houses last week by checking the dryness about five minutes after AJ finsihed painting.

Before I forget, good luck to Golinka and Leonard, the Storyteller not the dog at the reelly big shew.
AJ has a cold and I’m starting to get a sore throat, so I’m calling it a night. Good night all.

Good night again, Bella. And best of luck to The Royal Mum and Leonard.
