Chet And Bernie Music (1)

“Someone was unfamiliar with If You Were Mine?” Admin says.

“So here it is,” Spence says. “If You Were Mine, by Johnny Mercer and Matty Malneck, with Billie Holiday on vocals and an all-star band. The understated and brilliant pianist is Teddy Wilson, and that’s Roy Eldridge on trumpet at the end – you’ll see why that trumpet does things to Chet. The year – 1936, probably when she was at the height of her powers.”

For Molly.

    Hey Dawson:

Finn McCool is a great name. And what a cutie he is.
How are you enjoying your purple quilt?

Thanks for the tune, Spence and Admin!

Mollypop is at the top of my page, and that song was for Molly.

Finn looks like a wee little adorable puppy.

We read last evening’s blog….we didn’t know Melanie was neighbors with Rachel Maddow. That is cool. Do you know her, Melanie? Happy Birthday to your house. An old house has a soul…like another person being there.

Gah!…Friday the 13th!?…grunt!…That explains the strange music…cough!…I hope I make it through this doomed day. When my friend went out to start her car this morning a big Black Kat ran right in front of her and under the car….yeep!…I Yeeped at it but apparently it didn’t hear me. Then Beau Yuff! Yuffled! and it still didn’t move….grunt! ….Damned black Kat on Friday the 13th. Nothing good can come of this….sniff!

Morning! I’ll be back afternoon sometime. First meeting with the house assessment dude (love to know where those two decorative porches are that appeared on our house’s . Why the barn is now a mudroom. And where the heck did all that basement come from???

Anyhoo, after that I’m off to see Dan.

I live near Rachel. I see her house when I go for my long walks. Haven’t been able to do those lately.

Good morning and Happy Friday the 13th! Good luck to eveyone out there, expecially Rio who started out the day with a black kat. Oh my!

Barb made it in to work. Her CL called at 9:00 last night to see if she made it home OK. Good thing she did, or she could have frozen to death by then. She called at 8:31 a.m.to make sure she was at her desk at the proper starting time this morning. So thoughtful.

Listened to Rachel Maddow’s discussion on Mitt this morning. She let him have it.

Very nice Spence and Admin. Although I play sax, I do appreciate a good trumpet and Billy Holiday was a master at her craft.

Yes, my friends, today is Friday the 13th, fear of which is called

  15. Tupper and Gilly
    11:24 am on January 13th, 2012

    Good morning everyone.
Ok – we know that there are certain subjects that we all agree not to any discuss on the blog – we are all friends and we all have different opinions about what is right and wrong, good or bad, funny or not. And we try very hard to stay out of judgements on any of that stuff – if we don’t agree, we usually just stay quiet.
But this time we are going out on a limb.
We are going to say something that is probably going to be very unpopular with many of you, but we are gong to say it anyway.

We can’t stand the sound of Billie Holliday’s voice.

There – we said it. We’re stickin’ by it.

  16. Rose
    11:27 am on January 13th, 2012

T&G: Thank you! I am one of those people who sits back and says nothing to keep the peace. Notice that I only mentioned Johnny Mercer wrote good songs. I can’t stand her voice either. She is considered such a talent, but I don’t see it or hear it. Maybe Spence, Admin, Bernie and Chet need to listen to more of Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Adele, in my humble opinion….

  17. Riö – The Evil Pug
    11:28 am on January 13th, 2012

Billie!…Me either!…grunt!…Extremely dislike that sound she makes…snorkel!…The Kats and I agree on this one thing, now I really am feeling Friday 13ish…shudder!

  18. Riö – The Evil Pug
    11:31 am on January 13th, 2012

Doomed!…You realize now Spencer and Admin will probably torture us with multiple posts regarding their choice of music…sniff!…He’s already gearing up for it by placing that ominous “1” up in the Title….grunt!

  19. Tupper and Gilly
    11:40 am on January 13th, 2012

We are willing to concede “talent” in regard to Holliday – we don’t know much about the art of music, and others are far more informed than we are. But we do know what we like, and what makes us uncomfortable.
Don’t even get us started on “progressive jazz”. We just keep waiting for it to turn into a melody….

Now, old time jazz like Pete Fountain etc – count us in!

  20. Riö – The Evil Pug
    11:48 am on January 13th, 2012

  22. dawson

  23. Siber-H
    12:16 pm on January 13th, 2012

Rose! Thanks! A Yankees cap would be great! (whispering) Don’t tell Rio.

Ok, I said up above that it was always good to start the blog with music sometimes. It is, but that doesn’t mean I like this morning’s music either. Mom has told me at all times to try to be polite on the blog. We would probably appreciate Amy Winehouse singing some of those songs.
I usually like the music Spence puts up.
    Bluegrass anyone?

  24. Tupper and Gilly
    12:22 pm on January 13th, 2012

Dawson – if you have ever had to pick up a nasty, gooey hairball in the middle of the night, having awakened to the unforgettable sound of cat yak, you would know for sure that “splort” is not only a real word, but an undeniably accurate word for the action of an icky kat.

Siber – bluegrass can be FUN!

  30. OleyHowlers
    1:29 pm on January 13th, 2012

We liked listening to Billie Holliday sing, altho that is not the sort of music we listen to normally. Now blluegrass on the other hand….O Yeah! All bluegrass… But most especially Union Station. And one of the very best singers is Allison Krause.

  31. Masquers
    2:08 pm on January 13th, 2012

Friday the 13th. All in a “roll” is more like it, Rio. As in rolling our the maximum number this year. Rechecking the “facts”. Every year has at least one, but not more than 3. Rose is quite right. The next one falls in April, then again on July 13.

Howlers: Your choice of Union Station and Allison Krause is a good one. We like their music also.

O.Howlers: A very heartwarming story. That the shelter changed the rules and is now accepting pets is incredible news for the Nation Within. But, I must admit, I did a double-take at the picture. Is it just me or, does that look like the head of a Dachshund on a Great Dane body?

That is a good story, Fellow Sibers. They have a program here where foster pet parents will keep a pet for a woman that goes into the domestic violence shelter. All names and info are kept secret to protect the pets and people in danger.

Bear, I’m laughing, but yes, the photo does kind of look like the head of a Dachshund on a Great Dane. I think if the Great Dane’s ears were “cropped” it would look more like the Great Danes we are used to seeing. Ear cropping should be outlawed here just like it is in England.

Splort isn’t in the Oxford English Dictionary or the American Heritage Dictionary. It is an example of onomatopoeia.

I’ve know for a long time that Bernie and I don’t share a taste in music.

Interesting time here. For some reason (snicker) the weather forecasters got everything wrong! I was down visiting Dan, beautiful sunny day, 20 miles away from home . . . when Zoe called.

Major snowstorm had hit! Schools closed! Roads bad! I look out into the beautiful sunshine and said I’d be right home.

MollyPop’s Mom: I’m not saying anything about that because of you know who. I fear a breaking heart is in the making.

  44. Masquers
    4:08 pm on January 13th, 2012

Enough talk of politics, perhaps. We all have differing opinions and tastes – as we do in music. This one has been noted as it has obviously raised a howl among some pack members.

B: I researched the meaning of onomatopoeia to find out it means “a word that imitates the sound it makes”. Question: can it be called a “word” if it’s not in the dictionary? I say yes. Webster includes words as acceptable years after the fact – giving in finally to popular usage.

  45. B.Stover
    4:30 pm on January 13th, 2012

Masquers: All words have been invented and I always say that all language is metaphor–our way of communicating “reality” or what we think and feel, to one another. I have to ponder this more but the simple answer is that words in dictionaries are there based on usage. The editors of dictionaries gather words that have become common and are used by a group of people. If splort is used enough it will become a recognized word.

  46. B.Stover
    4:34 pm on January 13th, 2012

Just to give one example (and based on onomatopoeia), “buzz” is the sound that a bee makes and the word was “invented” to express that sound.

My dad’s law school roommate was a big Billie Holliday fan, so my dad first got exposed to her then. Great voice but sad story, unfortunately like a lot of others including Janis Joplin. As to favorite singers, we are kind of omniverous here in Chevy Chase, liking just about anything, although a special appreciation for Nancy LaMott (if you haven’t heard her, what a great voice) and, of course, the divine Miss M (Bette, we just adore you). Riö, Boston did not get much snow. And I hope neither you nor Beau have to wear that outfit.

Jasper, Glad your Mom is feeling better. The world seems to be filled with nasty bugs right now.

Can’t remember what else I was going to write, but remember the photographer who came on a while back? Ryan Marguis does photos up in AK.

Here’s one of his latest. Might have to get that as a Valentine gift for myself.

    Can’t stay awake. TTFN

Buddy. My mom really likes Neil Young also, as well as those other three guys (CS&N). There is also a songwriter singer named Richard Shindell that she likes a lot too; he was part of a short-lived group a few years back called Cry, Cry, Cry. Wookie

I get wacko phone calls. One time I was driving along at 65 mph and I got a call from Forest Lawn Cemetery asking me if I had made my burial plans.

So, I have no problem calling one of our Plunderer’s group who has furnished us with a phone number. I have Kirby’s info and will call tomorrow afternoon. I hope his family has just gone away on a wonderful vacation.

    Whoopie+++!
I got a package in the mail! It had a genuine anti-marauding goat charm in it so it got here in record time. It contained some wonderfully luxurious fur flowers, a butterfly dream catcher and a beautiful birch bark woman. I’m so happy, happy with all these fun, funky and functional items that I could just splort! No! Wait…wrong word. Twirl! That’s it. I’m twirling.
I’m twirling as I go out to dinner with SIL.
I’ll have to listen to the music links later. If you don’t like Billie Holiday or Bob Dylan you’d probably hate Tom Waits, one of my favorite musicians.
    G’day Liz!

Firm!…We are re-watching the second half of the Firm because someone here was preoccupied with twirling little bits of paper the first time we watched the show…heh!

Rose: I had no idea Gypsy Jazz has been around since the 1930’s. Grampa was a big jazz fan and was always talking about the difference in East Coast and West Coast Jazz. Lots of old LP’s still around in his house.
Wookie: CS&Nash one of our favs too.
Interesting how diverse, yet similar our tastes in music are here at Chet’s Place.
Rio: There should be a new episode of The Firm which aired last night (Thursday to be the regular day now)

Void!…. Someone here is getting really miffled because youse guys have been talking about musicians that she used to love listening to like Neil Young, CSN&Young, Bob Dylan, David Gates and Bread, John Denver, America, Kat Stevens etc, just to name a very few….sniff!… I say used to because here in this house there is no real way to listen to music except for that dumb old radio her mother has on upstairs in the morning to drive us all insane…grunt!…There is no sound system per say. Right now all of my friends music is packed away dawg knows where…wuffle!…She says she might go buy a small system to set-up down here so when she is “working” on her projects she can at least listen to the radio…heh!…It might make all the difference, you never know!…chuffle!

Alice!… Elmore Leonard is always interesting, so thanks for the link…heh!… That man created the “exceedingly courteous but trigger-happy character, U.S. Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens” character that we here love and adore…heh!… Can’t wait for the Premier of the new season…snorkel!

Unfair!….How come Bear gets that book Suds In Yer Eye first?….grunt!… I called for it too you know…sniff!…Now I have to read it after Bear and his Cheeto stained paws have been all over it…grump!….Who knows how long it will take him to get through the book. I could be waiting forever and 10 days…sniff!…Very, very very unfair deal there Alice!…grumble!

Oh, you were still up, ha ha! Tricked me… Hi again you guys, i’ve missed checking in. Rio, how come your friend doesn’t have an iPod?

I always confuse Elmore Leonard and James Elroy, for no good reason.

Bed-time!….Comes early because Beau pretty much got kicked downstairs by her mother…heh!…She’s finally had enough of his bed-hogging ways and gave him the what-for boot…sniff!…That means he is down here with us right now. So my friend says we should all go to bed to “keep the peace”…grumble!….That guy is really pushing my buttons lately…snort!

Liz!…Sorry, now it is our bed-time. Elmore Leonard and James Elroy are probably long lost twins…heh!…Not that I know that much about either of them…sniffle!sneeze!…Goodnight!..err, Good Day!

We finally listened to Billie Holiday, and we may be in the minority here, but we liked her singing. At least Barb did. She also admires her and feels sorry for her short problem-filled life. She had a tough start, and if she were a star today, her life could be much different. Growing up poor, with a mostly absent mother, uneducated, and a woman of color in the twenties and thirties, she sure didn’t have it easy. Also read that she wrote God Bless the Child. Who sang that later on, was it BS&T?

Liz!!! Hi hi hi!! Good to hear from you! And how is the lovely Ms Cricket?

MPM-thanks for calling Kirby’s folks. Please say hi for us too.

Music – we love so much of the music being bantered about today. And we like a lot of new music too. Lady GaGa may be a little weird, but some of her music does make you get up and DANCE.
We kinda like Mannheim Steamroller too

Rio – we think you should print out a picture of that dog in the pink snowsuit and use it to threaten Beau when he gets out of line. Is he still doing that biting thing? Sounded like he was getting a lot more cuddly with his lap sitting.

    Dear Rio,
If you go back and check you will see that Bear Spirit got in two posts before you for the book. But you are next and I am sure he will clean off any cheeto stains. Or Else.

After I started on youtube music I somehow got to the Beatles and have been listening to them all evening. I too use earphones on my laptop. The sound is great. Without earphones it is not worth listening to.

Now I should get ready for bed.

Nice to see Liz! And the rest of you of course.

I’ll try to keep my paws out of the Cheetos bag when reading the book, Rio. Also, am a pretty fast reader…that is unless someone starts bugging me…then my stubborn streak tends to kick in.
Thanks for sending it on Alice. We’ll be on the look-out.
A very interesting interview with Elmore Leonard. Had no idea he was 86. We have been reading and enjoying his books for many years.

Good day Liz. It’s great to have you back.

Looking forward to hearing how Kirby T. P. is doing.

And Barb and Maggie. Yes, it was Blood, Sweat & Tears that sang God Bless the Child. Talk about old memories. That was one of my dad’s favoritemost bands back when he was in college many eons ago.

I finally made it home. AJ was plowing and shoveling the driveway when I arrived hom. The snow is so high on the sides of the driveway I couldn’t get out and help so I was forced to stay in my nice, warm car and watch him shovel and clear a path for me. I go a weird Rio-esque enjoyment out of that.

MollyPop’s Mom: Please give KirbyT my best. I miss that guy. He and Liz were/are some of the late night posters that are still around by the time I get home along with Staff, Macy, T&G and Dawson during a race.

Tenzing is heading to bed and I’m going to take a page from his book and call it a night. I’ve been feeling lightheaded all day. Night all.

Dawson – you are probably sleeping blissfully by now, but we are glad to know your package arrived. That anti-goat charm really worked!

Liz – so glad to hear that vet is doing well for Cricket. Did you see that Melanie has her accupunturist working on Patsy?

Mama says she is very honored that you are all considering “splort” for the Plunderers’ dictionary. We have a list of words we are collecting.

And now, its time to go clean the clay out from under our nails and head off to bed.

Alice, I didn’t realise that but you’re right, the quilt is working beautifully.
Rebecca, still can’t believe you guys live in all that snow. ‘Eight Below’ was on tv tonight with those amazing dogs, i thought of you of course!
T&G, yes, I’ve heard of a few dogs getting acupuncture and it working really well, it’s great that Patsy’s getting it. If only C would sit still long enough…
Thanks for all your warm hellos, everyone.
