Chet and Bernie 6: The Sound and the Furry

“I hear there were a lot of great title suggestions,” Admin says.

“It was really impressive,” Spence says. “And the Plunderers were responsible for many of the best. But we fell head over heels for George Scott’s (he’s from Peerless Book Store in Alpharetta GA) entry. Here’s George and Buddy Thor looking at poster art of the new cover.”

Welcome beautiful dude from the recent past, Mrs. Murphy.

    Are we first, are we?

There wer many, many great suggestions, none of which came from us!

    I like the title!

I am not so sure about the white image on the front cover though. Is that a whale looking at us?

Morning all, Zoe is resting as comfortable as possible while having, what she says, is an electronic multi plug object on her arm. Turns out her veins are not happy with all the sticking.

The Pack enjoyed a tin of candy canes while I was gone taking YSAS to the train. The idiots.

About the title. I find it intriguing. I believe Chet is the Furry, but what is the Sound?
    Water? A Noise? A UFO?

Is there something like Big Foot in the Bayou? hmmm, pondering . .

We are in an out. Got a call to watch some little ones at Josh’s. Will be back this afternoon.

Wolfie, don’t think they have whales in the bayou. Maybe it is a picture of a swamp. LOL

I like the cover art. It looks like Chet and Bernie are on a shore looking at an island in the middle distance. No leaves on the trees so it must be the winter months. A “sound” is an ocean inlet so that would explain the location…and title.

    Good morning all.

I laughed so much at Amalia’s story. (I was drinking coffee at the time which turned out to be a mistake.) When I got to the description of the aunt as Salome with 7 veils, I said the same thing as her parenthetical comment but used “dog” spelled backwards. Wonder who was playing the part of Herod.

Happy Egg Day! Meashka got a fuzzbutt this morning.
We wish we liked that title. Maybe it will grow on us.

But, but, but… there isn’t any ocean sound in the bayou is there? A delta is not a sound. But a full moon over a misty bayou gives a very whitewashed look to a scene.
Think maybe “sound” refers to Bernie’s health? Maybe he went there on vacation after one of his unfortunate experiences with a Pedro’s fist.
We do wish Chet’s white ear was visible.

Bee – Herod was played by good old goofy Ichabod, complete with his gigantic white sneakers poking out from under his bedsheet royal robe, and a Burger King crown decorated with glitter glue.
In his next role, he will be playing “Elf” from the Will Farrell movie. They found or made some kind of shoos that have curly pointed toes, and green tights that are long enough for his 6’5″ frame. Of course his bullet proof eyeglasses can only add to the characters he plays…..
(Oops – should there have been a “put down your coffee warning at the beginning of that?)

  10. Tupper and Gilly

And we did NOT say “Pedro’s fist”. The word is PERP, you stupid ipaw!

Congratulations to George and his sidekick Buddy Thor. I like the title. I think the sound is a noise that Chet can hear but Bernie cannot.

Melanie: Glad that Zoe is starting her rehab. Sorry she has that multi-plug thingee on her arm but it might be better in the long run.

I wrote a long post that disappeared and now I can’t remember what I said. Sigh.

Melanie: If I recall correctly, we—the team and I—were running on the trail and making good time especially accouting for how warm it was. Our Giant tried to get is to rest once. We laughed at him and insisted we run another twenty miles before we had a little lie down. But, on the trail we couldn’t believe our noses and AJ couldn’t believe his eyes. A gang of huge hogs were running toward us. The details might be fuzzy, but I think they started snapping and we started snapping, and then there was a dance number and a song about ‘When you’re a dog…’

The hogs attacked us! Us? Can you believe? They went hog wild! It was pigdamonium! Our Giant interviened and kept us safe. Safe from bacon for dinner? I’ve never heard of bacon being bad for your health, but our Giant insisted he was looking out for us. We trust him even if we were disappointed about dinner.

As we’ve come to understand, there is a remote farm nearby. AJ saw some guys on the edge of the river and wandering through the trees. Looking back, he thinks they must have been looking for our dinner that got loose.

Gosh, Junior, I know Moose attack sled dogs in Alaska, but hogs?

  36. SnowBella
    2:31 pm on December 30th, 2012

BStover: AJ estimates the hogs were well over 300 pounds. I’m not sure who would win, but AJ wasn’t taking any chances. He said the hogs were terrible. As he passed two other dog teams on the trail, he called out a warning; those dog teams turned around to avoid the hogs. I guess the race warned the rookies about the hogs this year in the mandatory rookie meeting.

Over 300 pounds…that is scary! Yes, it is best to stay out of “pigdamonium.” (Pandemonium is the capital of Hell in Milton’s Paradise Lost….from two Greek words: “pan” meaning all and “daimon” meaning demon.) Yikes!

It is hard for me to remember exactly how AJ broke up the fight. I was in my favorite place—the middle of the melee. I believe threats were made, insults were spoken, scruffs were grabbed, hogs and dogs were kept apart, a snowhook was pulled and our speed over that of the hogs was counted on for our get away when the time come.

Hogs are extremely intelligent, some say they are equal to dogs. Not sure if that is true. People keep them as pets, so I think they are norlally docile. We have heard of serial murderers who have fed their victims to pigs. Good way to leave no evidence, I guess.

Melanie, Barb made a Mexican soup that was quite tasty. Started with a can of Wolfgang Puck’s organic Chicken Tortilla soup, then added more broth, chicken, black beans, corn, rice and fire roasted tomatoes. Yum

    Just sponsoring dogs,
    What a glorious thing,
    And we’re happy again.

    We’re laughing at hogs,
    So dark, in the night
The Race is in our hearts
    And we’re ready to run.

That is the new snow they are plowing through. There is two feet of hard packed underneath them.

Speaking of underneath, I’m getting ready to go to bed.

    Let’s see,
    Do the Pack’s water,
    Water the Christmas tree,
    Turn down the heat,
Gather the laundry (you should see how I take it upstairs)
Give out pills for those on pills,
    Take my pills,
    Turn off the lights,
    Go upstairs,
    Start the heated mattress,
    Get ready for bed,
Open bedroom doors for those that aren’t Patsy (she’s already in there)
Climb into bed and READ. Yeah, right. That last one? That doesn’t always happen.

From Checkpoint Central comes a dedication from BearSpiritDog and Masquers for Yentna, the Family and Friends Checkpoint:

“BSD and Masquers have more Family and Friends who (insist on) would like to be included. They will be watching over Team Snowhook from the Yentna checkpoint. Their special talents are available throughout the race.: Among them, a doctor, a nurse, a private investigator, a positive best friend who believed every problem has a solution and our beloved gramps & grandmother whose love was without measure.”

Ahem!…cough!… I would like to say a few words tonight to kick-off the celebration. Although, I don’t really know when it is supposed to start…grunt!…. Today is the two year anniversary of our grandma’s passing and my heart has been heavy today. You guys were here when it happened and most of you are still here now. … sob!…I’ve known most of you for about 3 years and they have been very good years. There have been some ups and downs and disagreements, but what kind of friends never have disagreements or ups and downs?…snort! …We’ve been through a lot together over these few short years. There has been sickness, pain, heartaches, headaches, brutal walks and even death. Through it all we’ve managed to still be friends and most importantly keep our sense of humor. I believe this is because we have also experienced a lot of really good stuff together as well. Like the love of good books. Chet and Bernie being at the top of this list, and watching the exciting adventure and terror of the Iditarod unfold before our eyes together. We embrace the challenge to support our Snowhook team and help them to the starting line for the second year now….woooo!… While sharing our love of family, food, movies, arts, crafts, farm animals, auctions, checkpoints, quilts, poems, wine, sewing, music, pies and baseball….heh! …I’m sure I forgot something because for such a small group we have very diverse interests. I cherish this diversity because it keeps this here blog and our community thriving. Please raise your bowl and drink a toast with me to another year together through all things good, bad, sweet and sad…snort!chug!chug!

I am thinking of the many that have gone before:

*Fargo, the alpha and leader who, with patients taught me a lot about mushing and more about life. He defended the team from a wolf, barely surviving, but later that same season lead AJ to a 3rd place finish in a 300 mile race.
*Trent Howard Whatshisname, who was, nay, still is my heart.
*Rory, our rescue who, once she understood love, gave it freely.
*Younger, the gentle dog who was a powerhouse on the trail. I am reminded of him each time I look at this brothers Jesse and Frank.
*Willie, oh, I miss Willie. He was our gentle giant and our residnet clown.
*Rowdy was one of my best friends in this world. Some of my best conversations were with Rowdy. He understood the secret of life. Sometimes, I still think I see him out of the corner of my eye.
*Bridger—they broke the mold with Bridger. Like AJ, he had a strength of character that required him to prove little. He was my protector.
*Our Boy Named Sue—he learned everything he needed to know about being a dog from Willie. He was a love.
Patsy Ann, the first—what a good girl. Thank you for your short time with us.

I am grateful I was intrusted with their keeping.

I would like to take this moment to tell you about my husband and my love, Misha, who Mom and Pop call Moon. He was the best partner a girl could have, and our hunting dance was a thing of beauty. He still watches over me, and on beautiful moonlit nights like tonight, I believe I can hear him calling me to help him hunt down the critters living under the shed, or in the woods, or far out the fields. Sigh. Misha was the very best man I could have ever dreamed of.

Hmmm Almost time for 2012 to be done. It started out well but ended in too much sadness and heartbreak for many. This is from a song: “better days are coming…we’re going to wake up and break this curse…”

I’m in Anchorage for a few days and it is very warm which means slush turning to ice. With regard to sponsoring dogs…since we don’t know who will make the team, I think we should just label the slots 1-16 and then as AJ picks the dogs, the numbers can be replaced with names. So we have funded dogs 1 and 2. Would that work?

We will raise a toast too. BSD did a great job of listing everyone up above. We sincerely hope that 2013 holds more joy and less sadness than we met this year. We are looking forward to saying goodby to 2012 tomorrow night and hoping for good things ahead.

I know that the Plunderers are a strong bunch and together we can deal with whatever life sends our way. Good night and God Bless. We love you guys.

Oh my Goodness, we forgot all about the celebration of Life!

    So embarrassing!

But mom seems to be in a bit of a funk, so I hope everyone will understand.

Wolfie. As this wonderful idea was your mom’s, we are glad that you and she have joined us now, and hope we can bring her out of her funk as we celebrate life.

Wolfie: No need to apologize. I’m glad you made it.

I’m grateful for the Quilt that rest softly, but warmly on the shoulders of those who need it whether they’re feeling less than tip-top, have a hurting heart or find themselves in a funk.

Wolfie! You made it just in time for me to say good night and dog bless you. You might be in time to get some bacon and hot wings. The boot rear floats are delish.

Almost missed the party! Where are the root beer floats? I will raise a root beer float to everybody mentioned above. Especially good wishes to G&BB’s Dad, Zoe, Wookie’s Granddad. I hope they feel better soon. Also good feelings for Sasha and Shiek, Tenzig and Patsy and to all in pain that I forgot.

And to Chet the Dog who made it all possible.

    Sweet dreams everyone.

Wolfie: Can I serve you up a boot reer float? Or, perhpas there are some hot wings left if Rio didn’t eat them all. Nevermind. I see orange pawprints leaving the scene and heading in the direction of a warm, soft bed with baseball toys just so.

    Just because I can…number 201.

Thanks for the celebration everyone. I think we deserve it.
Now I really am going to bed. My list isn’t as long as Melanie’s but it is long enough.

    Nighty noodle.

AJ and I just got back from a jaunt to rescue our snowmachine that ran out of gas. At a fork in the trail, the following occurred, “We could go that way. It’s easier, but longer.” True to our nature, we went the other way. Snowmachine rescued.

Bluecat up top! That is a nice way to end the evening.

We are glad Wolfiemade it and we hope he and his mom managed a toast everytime they read one of our toasts! They need that and they need to be pampered under the quilt right now.
Siber, now that the final postings are in from Top of the World 350, it turns out that Tsuga not only came in 10th place, but still had all 14 of their Sibes! That is a really great showing for Siberians, isn’t it.
Now we are turning our focus to the Knik 200 and doing a Snow Dance. We are going to have cold temps here (relatively speaking) this week, so maybe if we get all of our local friends to blow those cold temps northwest to Alaska?
