Cap’n Crunch

Parrots came up yesterday, bringing to mind Cap’n Crunch, who plays a supporting role in Dog On It:

“He said, ‘Madison rocks.’ She taught him. He can say other things, too.”

Whoa. Cynthia was claiming that he – this beady-eyed inmate – could talk? I didn’t buy it.

“His name’s Cap’n Crunch.”

Cap’n Crunch bobbed his head back and forth, an ugly, lizard-like motion, and made the horrible croaking noise again. It ended in a high-pitched squeak that hurt my ears. One glance at Bernie and I knew he wasn’t hearing that squeak. Bernie missed some things, true, but you had to admire him: he never let his handicaps get him down.

“What else can he say?”

Oh, Bernie, please.

Cynthia approached the cage. “Come on, baby.”

Squawk squawk.

“Hear that?”

“’Light my fire.’ He said, ‘Light my fire’ when I said ‘Come on baby.’”

After Bruce Bird crossed the rainbow Bridge, we wound up with four Amazons and an African gray. Never a dull moment unless all the lights were out. None of the birds said the same things so you could always tell who was in a talkative mood. We had an orange wing Amazon, a double yellow headed Amazon, a yellow nape Amazon, a Mexican green cheek Amazon and an African gray. The only one that didn’t talk with the African gray but Oh, could he whistle.

When I was a kid we used to eat Cap’n Crunch (the cereal, not the bird). Also Fruit Loops.

Just the thought of it makes me nauseous. Amazon accidentally delivered some Honey Nut Cheerios instead of the regular ones and I’ll be giving them to my Mom as I can’t bear to eat them.

We stopped having budgies when the bird flu went through a few decades ago. 70s I think. Even though they were totally isolated in the house we lost two birds in a row and decided no more. I kinda miss them, but even though our childhood dog Cuppy was totally OK with Chipper (Chipper use to pull on her toe fur and sit on her back and head) I don’t think Diana or Freyja would be very bird tolerant. I know Freyja wouldn’t.

Grizz likes to say I am a big kid. I have never lost my taste for Fruit Loops, M&Ms, Hershey’s Kisses, Twizzlers and Swedish Fish, among many other things that are very bad for you… :^)
