Cape Wildlife Center

“You visited the Cape Wildlife Center yesterday?” Spence says.

“The very nice director, Theresa Barbo, gave me a tour,” says Admin. “They’re doing great work.”

“She’s also a writer,” says Spence. “Weren’t you on a panel with her once? I’m sure you remembered.”

“Um,” says Admin. “Anyway, I saw two or maybe three different kinds of hawks, an owl, and even a couple of fishers, all in various stages of recovery and being cared for in state-of-the-art fashion until they can be safely released into the right habitat.”

“Fishers on the Cape?”

“Yup. And don’t let me forget the turtles, and lots of other birds, plus rabbits and raccoons. It’s a great facility. There was some talk of a  signing, maybe in conjunction with a wine tasting.”

“One of my favorite conjunctions.”

“Cheers.”

Stover!… Those are guys who stand in rivers with fishing poles, or who sit at lakes with a cooler of beer with fishing poles….sniff! … Or who ride around in boats with coolers of beer with fishing poles….snort! … The common objects are always beer and a fishing pole, except for the serious river standing fishers…..heh!

We have fishers here, but I’ve never seen them. We also have fisher-men (get a lot of those) and also Kingfishers. The latter live in back of the house across the river! In the Spring you can here their kakakakakakak noise.

First story of the day . . . On Tuesday YSAS was doing background work for Boardwalk. The ROTC one. They got there early, got dressed in wool uniforms and waited for the correct lighting. It was hot. They were given popsicles and entertained themselves by reading the jokes on the sticks.

Finally, they started rehearsing. They had to march. Actors! As Riö would say “Snort!” They could NOT march in unison. snicker.

So YSAS went up to the Production Assistant and said, “When I was in school, I learned how to do this. Would you like some help?” At that point the PA was at wit’s end and said yes.

YSAS goes to the head of the line and says, “This is how you do it. I’m going to say, ‘Left, Left, Left right, left.’ We will all march in place until everyone is doing the correct foot and then I’ll say ‘forward’. Everyone got it?”

    It went perfectly!

Carpola, I forgot the best part!

YSAS did not tell them when or where he learned this in school. In the Virginia Public School system the eighth grade has a CLASS in marching. For 45 minutes a day, 3 days a week, he marched around either outside or in the gym.

That is while he was living with his father. I did not know about the marching until around 3 months ago.

Proving you never know when you are going to need your education!

Fishers are shy critters. You don’t see them very often.

Melanie: That’s a hilarious story. Good for YSAS. I hope I will be able to see the marching on Boardwalk Empire. The first season is being replayed now on HBO.

We have a wildlife rehab and sanctuary east of Albuquerque in the mountains with all the native wildlife in residence.

This is not a good time to mention skunks to my mom. No, I haven’t been skunked, yet, but we have a skunk invasion in the neighborhood. The neighbors across the street were setting on their back patio and watched a total of 5 skunks walk across their yard. The guy has been setting the trap since then and catches a skunk in it every night.

Staff! Great news about the pawtographed copies of The Dog Who!
Thank you so much! That makes all of us who may never be FOTM feel better. The copy may not be free but, thanks to you, we will have one.

    B. Interesting to find out there is also an animal called a Fisher(ing)Cat. I’ll have to look it up. Most of the kats I know are local guys that sit by the sides of fish bowls hoping for a lucky strike.

Kirby: I liked your “booties” poem from last night. I’ll bet you look very handsome in both the every day and dress-up ones.

Bella: We love your stories and are looking forwarding to hearing more. A children’s series about the kennel dogs is certain to be a best seller. Can’t wait to read more tales on your blog. You will soon be a best selling author and the rest of the Plunderers will be asking for your autograph.

So on Sunday, OTAS and F took YSAS and me to a house they are looking to buy. Unfortunately, though the land is beautiful and the house has potential, today they found out that there is MAJOR oil contamination. Bummer.

But after that, Andrea cooked us some portabella mushroom burgers (very good) and we went to Harry Potter.

I loved HPDH part 2. We did see it 3-D, but I don’t think it made that much of a difference. OTAS and I now have to read the end of the book because we think (thought the fight scene was great) it was different than the book. I remembered that they left out Creature changing sides and coming into the battle with the House Elves. He remembered that the main battle between V and H was with everyone watching. We’ll have to see who is correct!

    Here’s F doing our dinner.

Barb, The neighbor calls animal control in the morning and they come and pick up the skunk in the trap and return the trap later in the day. Animal Control uses a blanket to put over the skunk and trap when they approach it, and they seem to have pretty good luck with that method. It is a humane trap. It is actually mom’s trap, but she gleefully loans it to the neighbors. Mom has had to de-skunk too many dogs in her life to have fond feelings toward skunks. She would never bother a skunk in the wild, and she knows the skunks lived here before people arrived so she knows she is being unfair. It all comes down to DOGS. Mom had to kill a rattlesnake once in her yard before her dogs found it.

Sam, I don’t blame you for being upset.

    Mollypop, paws crossed.

  32. Siber-H
    12:40 pm on August 4th, 2011

Barb, I am sure we can correctly assume that, but skunks are not an endangered species right where I live. There is some sort of weird overpopulation of them going on right now. If they would just let a few Sibers roam the neighborhood that problem could be quickly solved.

Hi Gang! Its lunch hour at Crazy Lady Land, so Mamam gets a few minutes to say hi.
Bee – Fishercats can be very dangerous and aggressive critters. they have been known to attack and eat cats and (gulp) small dogs. Don’t worry Sammie – they would NEVER bother a Princess!
They are just one of the many good reasons that Basil and Sage are indoor only Kats. We have fishers, coyotes and bears in abundance.
Siber – when Mama was little, her grandfather’s pet name for her was “Golinka”. He told her it meant she was special. Later, when she learned more of the Native language, she found out that Golinka is the Apache word for “skunk”. So she was her grandfather’s Little Stinker

Last summer a regular at the dog park got skunked right in the face before her mom brought her to dog park. Us dogs were fine with it, but the two-leggeds kept their distance.

Bee – sorry to be so long getting back to you – clay class tonight after work. But as to fishercats – yes, they are found in wooded areas, and especially like to be around water sources. The Cape is actually full of wooded areas. The woods aren’t full of huge, tall trees – they are smaller because of the salt air and sandy soil, but the Cape’s woods are lovely, dark and deep as a famous New England poet would say. So fishers abound. There are many deer also, but we have never actually seen one while on the Cape…we do see them here almost daily.

Rio – good for your friend for saving her ass – ets and selling her stock. Maybe her vacation got postponed, but she should still be able to buy your treats for you.

    Dawson,
Did you read that I ordered you a paw printed and signed copy of The Dog Who?

You should use the secret decoder device and let me know what you want signed on the book.

    🙂

Funny joke on Letterman: Recent Gallup poll shows that the President’s approval rating is down, the economy is the biggest concern and 58% of the population beleives in God…the other 42% were turned into pillars of salt.
(well, we thought it was funny)

Macy: I think your mom’s SDD may have been hacked by the maruading goats. I recieved a SDD from your mother that would likely make even Mr. Redbone blush.

I like the idea of Alaska as a vacation destination for Rio’s friend. I also like that Rio’s friend listened to her gut regarding her investments.

Once again, it is raining Herbs and Royals. I need to put on my rain boots and do chores.
