… But No One Does Anything About It

“Athena and Brutus, huh?” Spence says. “Now they’re giving names to winter storms.”

“That’s the way the country’s going,” says Admin. “Ten years from now they’ll be naming every damn zephyr.”

Welcome 2 team players, Scout the sugar plum.

Brutus????? Brutus?????? Gosh darnit! That is the name our aunt always used to call brother Boris. She could never remember that is name was Boris, not Brutus. And now here they are naming a stupid Noreaster Brutus? Which one was that? The one that missed us by “that much” ?

Terry, we are very sorry to hear how bad that one hit you yesterday, and we are now doubly worried about our cousins.

    Other than that: Good Morning!

Hi OleyHowler! Naw, that last one was Athena. Now I’m going to have to check the weather. It’s only the Weather Channel naming them. .

Naming these storms seems to be somewhat stupid. I didn’t know they were doing this until I read today’s blog.

Happy Birthday Patsy! Husky birthday hugs to a beautiful girl.

Beau? Are you still with us?

Wildland firefighters from the southwest are going to the NE to help with storm damage. HUH? That is what the newspaper said this morning, but it didn’t say how they are going to be helping.

Oley – Right now we are just fine. This morning I put the capstone on ending this crisis. I filled the tank in the car that was down to a quarter. We even heard from those Good Hands people that they’re paying us a whole lot more than we expected. Life is good.

Nice shot of Twain ca. age 60. Holbrook has done such a job of cementing America’s image Twain that it is easy to forget that he was at one time a young man and a middle aged man. You might enjoy a project that I did in partnership with the Twain house in Hartford – a map of the places in America important to Twain-

An embarraassing moment from many years ago, upon arriving to visit friends in Florida:

    “So, how was your summer?”

“Not so great. Andrew came and spent a few days with us. We are still cleaning up the damage.”

    “Really? What happened?”

Well, he ripped up the entire front lawn, smashed up the car, and broke every single window on one side of the house. There was trash EVERYWHERE and we are still finding odd little bits of damage here and there”

“My gosh – why did you allow Andrew to do all this?”

For which we got a pitying look for our being so dense.
    “Umm – Andrew was a Hurricane….”

It was a first time that a storm was given a male name. Dam you, weather channel!

T&G, NOAH decided to have male names to himacanes. The Weather Channel just decided a few months ago to name “major” winter storms. NOAH doesn’t do it.

Patsy sends Thank you licks and tail wags.

I am going to be a royal pain here and point out that it is 99.9% certain that the “Everybody talks about the weather” quote was not Twain but his friend and collaborator Charles Dudley Warner, editor of the Hartford Courant. There are attributions for him saying this as far back as 1884, where Twain wasn’t cited as the author until 1905. Twain also never said “It’s better to keep silent and let people think you a fool than to speak up and erase all doubt.” My fourth book will be called “The greatest things that Mark Twain never said.”

Lecture over, but this might be on the test.

If you have as active an imagination as I do, you may just see Twain’s face in the center window.

Heh, heh, heh . . I love seeing the pictures for the auction first!

Isn’t the new Lincoln flick out?

Let’s see. . YSAS and SO sent pictures of an underground house to me! A friend of SO has one. I love underground houses. I think that C.HobbitHarris lives in one.

Zoë has always thought I was nuts. But when I showed her the front of the house, she did not think it was an underground house. Then I showed her the roof. All grass.

So I am going up to bed, and dream of an underground house where the entire heating, cooling and electricity bill is only $150 a month.
