Busman’s Holiday

“What are you doing here, Tulip?” Bernie said.

“Stripping, basically,” she said, still patting me. She was an expert! We were in the dressing room at Club Utopia, which I should probably remind everybody about.

“Um,” said Bernie, “uh. I meant are you still with Livia, or … “

“Oh, yes! I’m learning so much from her. This is just something extra, sort of a busman’s holiday, Livia says.” Maybe I should also remind everybody that Livia Moon runs a place in Pottsdale called Livia’s Friendly Coffee and More. Tulip works in the more part. “But can I ask you the same thing?” Tulip said. “What are you doing here?”

“Looking for Astrid Jason,” Bernie said. “Do you know her?”

Tulip nodded. “I hope she comes back soon. Not that I mind storing her stuff. But it’s a big responsibility.”

“You’re storing her stuff?”

“Just a couple suitcases,” Tulip said.

“Can we see them?” Bernie said.

“Well, I don’t know,” Tulip said. “I promised I’d take good care of them.”

“Then we’re on the same side,” Bernie said.

Admin to Staff: If Staff will send an address to spence.quinn@gmail.com an arc of To Fetch A Thief will be on its way, a little recovery-period reading material.

Here’s a little more Rosie Gray. If link doesn’t work, maybe cut and paste: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2010/07/chelsea_clinton_2.php

Staff! take lots of naps, with purring engines around you, and enjoy the ARC. Wow. That's great.

In the suitcases: well, we know it isn't Albie, but perhaps something that Astrid "borrowed" from Albie. With our luck it will be tin futures.

So Chet, our dogs love, behind the ears, on the chest, gently over their eyes and most of all belly rubs. What's your favorite?

I'm glad that the Rosie isn't our Rosie. There are times we think she's got static between her ears. And that would not fit with knowing how to work the computer.

That was extremely nice of Admin to agree to send an ARC to Staff. My dad had contacted his lawyers (Dewey, Cheatam and Howe — just a little legal humor there) to see if we could somehow use the force majeure clause in the 47 page contract (something about Alice Johnson hypnotizing me to send the book to Staff) as a means for us being legally ble to send our copy to her, but that no longer appears necessary.

Note to Macy and Wolfie. My mom would be very pleased to make your blocks for you. Wolfie — we do need a photograph of you, so please post one. Macy — you have actually posted a number of photos, so please let us know which one (or which ones) to use, or post a new one for her to use. If you want, she can probably combine multiple photos into a single block (although each may be a bit smaller)if you prefer, again just let us know.

It does seem as though the entire Abrahams clan, including siblings and offspring, is incredibly talented.

Debbie LM: Just saw the quilt square pictures. They are just very very unique and beautiful. I guess this quilt is real, not virtual? I would like a square but no one here is crafty at all. You take the pictures & Staff puts them in a quilt? Anyway, sounds like it will be really wonderful.

The Librarian is huffing and puffing her way to the kitchen, so I will remind Dawson & Staff that she's been taking a memoir-writing class. I believe she's planning to change all the good things she wrote about you. "They have just proved once again that the youngest was always left out of things." Then she does a "Rio:" sob!sob!sob!

She's a little whiny today due to having a mammogram first thing this morning. And they didn't let her drink coffee before. She's brewing some strong stuff right now.

I always thought that a busman holiday was doing the same thing you do for your job on your day off. As go for a drive if you were a busman.

Alternative theories: Busman was the cab driver (with horses) and would spy on his relief driver by pretending to be a passenger.

OR a Buzman Holiday, a buzman being a pickpocket and never being on vacation.

I'd rather go on a long drive without a regular schedule for my day off instead of spying on people or picking people's pockets.

I had fun visiting with the other guys at the B&B.

Indie is independent. Not a Barnes and Noble for instance. Not a chain. There are a lot of Indie's that specialize in mysteries. Minneapolis has two!

    Once upon a Crime:
    http://www.onceuponacrimebooks.com/
and Uncle Edgar's, which is part of Uncle Hugo's (Sci Fi)
    http://www.unclehugo.com/prod/
Rio has a wonderful Indie mystery bookstore in Denver too, but I forget it's name.

I just use Uncle Edgar's. My Mom started me going there back in the 1970's.

She liked your song, but she spent the whole day with "Our House" going through her mind the whole time!

Staff: We love your quilt squares, and we think it's great that Spence is giving you an ARC. However, I did hear my mom grumbling that maybe you just said you got a kidney transplant so you could get Spence to send you a sympathy ARC, and maybe you should have to show your scar before anyone sends you anything! (Except the quilt squares, of course. Everyone can still send you those!)Don't listen to Mom, though. She's still upset that they snag all the good ARCs at the library downtown.

Staff: Funny about your cats quilt squares. I was going to order a purple dog but after seeing those beautiful squares Wookie did, I thought it would be too crazy. However I do not want those crazy eyes. But could my dog have purple eyes? Or black is fine.

FattyKitty: You should know you are really my most favoritest sister. Now what about that ARC of To Fetch a Thief? Does your library get them? By the way, if you have a boob-squishing test up here they do not make you stop drinking coffee. I asked about that and they'd never heard of stopping caffeine. Don't ask me why.

Is Kindle Amazon? Right now, Random House & Macmillan (publishers) are mad at the Wylie Agency (literary agency) for developing an ebook deal for the back copies of their authors' list. Wylie would sell the ebook back copies to Amazon ONLY.

This would bypass the publisher. For some reason this is really upsetting the publishing companies.

    Interesting. So is Kindle Amazon?

Will READ the rest of Chet's blog tomorrow. Still need to know about the suitcases, but eyes are slowing closing. I would try to find a dog to curl up in my lap while I sleep (like Abbie) but I think I would just get smooshed.

Dawson and FatKitty, you have heard how to get ready for your mammogram, correct?

    It involves a refrigerator door.

I MUST turn the computer off.

Slapping hands. Off, Off I say!

    ~OK Sam,

I will work around them. Sounds like you know what you are doing. ~Dawson,

I will look for some purple eyes when I am out and about tomorrow. Otherwise the black ones.

    Coming together! Yes!

Hi, everybody. Rio – how goes the Dixie reading? I said it freaked me out. It was my first PA book and I didn't expect…if you don't know yet, you will. I liked it.

Admin – very nice gesture, sending Staff the ARC. You make Chet proud.

Staff – many thanks for helping. Your quilts are gorgeous and you're mega-talented. Glad you're mending 🙂

Happy weekend, everybody, especially you, Chet.

I was just doing my Elvis impression and Mom tried to take a picture, only I ended up with crazy eyes, and when Mom tried to do the "red-eye" fix, it didn't work. So she's going to try to get a better picture next time, but for now here's me doing my Elvis impression with crazy eyes!

Staff – Don't let Sam fool you. She is good at giving orders but it is my Mom who is doing the square. Mom is a no-talent and has never done quilting. She is in awe of you quilters and just hopes that she doesn't do something that you can't work with.

You are so sweet to give Staff an ARC. She has been though a lot.

I just thought I might mention that my mom has been through a lot, too, with my rascally boys. Sometimes she cries and me and Baxter and Claudie and Maggie climb into her lap and give her snuggles and cuddles.

(I know, I am laying it on a bit thick, but it's all TRUE. And not can I blurrrrrr, but I can grovel for books, too. Is it working? How am I doing?)

Sigh. Mom, I did my best…..

hums the la la part of Our House in a very fine, blurry sort of fashion.

We are off now for a couseling appoint with the rascally ones, only I think they are off awol again.

Heh!… You guys are amazing! … snort!snort!…All this talk about your quilt squares and working together to get this very important project done on time!… wheeze!… I think we all agree we want the quilt to be in the Charming Mr. Abrahams lap by To Fetch A Thief’s pub date! …snort! …That would be very awesome indeed!…grunt!…Does everyone think this is possible?… wheeze!

I wonder if he will accept bribes?

Are you going to machine quilt the quilt yourself?

Or are you sending it out?

Let us know so that we can pass the kitty (not Alice or AK, I promise) for you! Plus we need to send $$ for the backing fabric and the batting.

Wolfie: I add my thanks for your song last night. So true for me as well. It is hard for your Mom right now and I'm sure glad she has you, Baxter, Claudie and Maggie to give her some loving. I would agree you could use an ARC to help you deal with those rascally, reckless boys.

Rosie!… I’ve been giving it some thought and my thought is this….snort!… I am going to make Rosie’s blog part of my morning ritual and see what that talented girl gets up to out there on the Village Voice every day… grunt!… I read some of the other bloggers posts today and she has a lot more talent and humor in her writing by far… snuff!…Although, she does tend to use the “F” word quite a bit(might be a NYC type of thing). That of course is just my opinion…sniff!… Her dad is my favorite ever, and believe me when I say I will not take time to read her blog because of him… wheeze!… I’m just happy he introduced me to her stuff! …sneeze!…If she sucked big time, I would definitely say so (and then cringe from the wrath of you-know-who!)…gasp!… But I will not have to do that because she deserves to be read, everyday! ….heh!heh! … That’s my soap box of the day!…yeep!yup!yip!

Oh, and I meant to say that in this morning's post, I liked how Bernie asks Tulip if "we" can see Astrid's suitcases. Of course, it could be the royal "we," or Bernie could mean he and Tulip, or maybe he and Ray (if he ever gets out of the car, although I thought at one point I proved he had). But I like to think Bernie means he and Chet!

Dollars and Scents! …. We will have to let Staff figure out her costs and then divide it by the count of our squares… snort!… She will lets us all know how much to give her per square. Since we all should have her address by then, we can send it ASAP after she lets us know the bottom line. ….wheeze!…And please remember to think of the cost that Wookie’s friend is incurring for your photo squares….sneeze!… We will need feedback from Debbie on this….cough!…I can tell you that the Fabric Photo paper she uses is not cheap by all means!…snuffle!… My friend bought some last weekend to get the good quality and it was pricey! …snort!

    Kirby,

I want to know what is so awful about Alice Johnson eyes. And of course Bernie meant Chet in his 'we'.

    Alice Johnson

Dear Maggie and Barb, I got your card while in the hospital. Takes me forever to thank you. Thank you.

While I am sitting up here in the messy quilt/computer room my windows are open and I can hear the loud cries of the barn owl. I bet it is a fledgling (or three). Everything else is fledging. Goodness they are noisy.

Well I see you are all conspiring to send me money. I will think on it. Who knows what will happen. I might find the perfect doggy backing on the sale racks at Faye's. And yes, as long as it doesn't get too big I am planning on quilting it myself on my vintage Bernina 831 from 1971. (Otherwise it gets too expensive.)

I have to go to bed now. I stayed up too late last night. Sleep is the best thing for me now. Thank you for all of your good wishes. You keep me cheerful and busy and that is the very best thing for me now.

Thank you Admin, I will defend you from that trash talking Rio anytime you need it! You are the best too.

Those quilt squares are perfect for Alice and Abbie!

Barb, yes an indie bookstore is owned by an individual rather than a corporation like B&N…locally owned usually.

Also to Barb since she and Maggie live in the country: Mom talked to a groomer friend of hers who lives in another state. The groomer said that if a dog gets skunked, you need to start de-skunking it immediately in order to get the best results. Mom doesn’t do that. Mom now knows better.

Alice Johnson: I think you have very nice eyes, as long as you don't turn them on me. You see, in case you haven't noticed, some of the folks here think your eyes are hypnotic and that you sometimes use them for not-so-nice purposes. I'm not saying that I buy into that theory. I'm just saying that I don't want anyone confusing the two of us!
