Boxing Day

“Did you know today is called Boxing Day in the UK and some other countries?” Spence says.

“Kinda,” says Admin. “Why?”

“No clue.”

“Here are three possibilities. One, it’s about the Boxer rebellion. Two, after too much proximity, families end up in fisticuffs. Three, the house is full of empty boxes.”

“I think it’s two.”

Good morning all. Happy Day After. We are all ready to celebrate Boxing Day.

It is called Boxing Day in Britain and was named after the tradition of gifts called “Christmas boxes” being given to employees and servants.

    Good morning all.

Winter here is grand. Hope we get snow, maybe in Feb. or early March so Darah can enjoy it.

We would have to call it Bagging Day here, as I do more gift bags than boxes. I am the Gift Bag Queen in the family!

Now off to start my Christmas shopping for 2015. I always like to pick up some little things such as ornaments or Christmas accessories at 50% off. Then I save them for next year. Does that make me organized or just plain CRAZY?

HOH, Tupper’s Mama, Dawson et al–I have been looking for all the words to “Deck Us All…” etc. for years. Most people I ask just give me a puzzled look (one person told me he had an Uncle Charlie who lived in Boston) THANK YOU!!! (I guess I should always ask here, first)
My understanding of Boxing Day is the same as HOH and Bee’s–you make up boxes of stuff for the help (plus it’s a legal holiday, I think: a good idea).
I’m afraid to go near any stores today, but do plan to follow HOH’s example tomorrow and see what’s available. Leaving for the acupuncturist now–have a great day, all.

Stover’s definition of Boxing Day is what we found on the internet several years ago. My folks were in Canada one year on Boxing Day and none of the Canadians they talked to seemed to know what Boxing Day is about.
Spence’s definitions of Boxing Day are funny.

T&G, That is a cute picture of the Herbs, but DO NOT mail them to me…shudder.

Mom will be avoiding all stores except the grocery until around Jan. 5.

B: That is okay. I will take a little more room on the easy chair while you eat all of the Twix. It seems like a good compromise to me. Out of curiosity, is the reason you haven’t had Twix before the same reason I haven’t had Twix before? The Giant could be eating Twix from all across the land and I wouldn’t be surprised.

    7:36 pm on December 26th, 2014

I am in a very bad mood and not because the Giant eats all the goodies. Normally, I borrow money from that Damn Pixie to get the Giant the gift of hockey tape. This year, I decided to change things up a bit. I borrowed more money from that Damn Pixie and got the Giant some hair ties for his long hair. They are wonderful colors—pink, orange, zebra, leopard—and boring Giant black. He opened them up and all he said was, “Uh, I don’t know what to say.’ How about, ‘Thank you, Belle Starr,’ or ‘You are wonderful, Belle Starr,’ or ‘At long last, I am as pretty as you, Belle Starr.’ He has no fashion sense.

  59. Tupper's Mama
    7:42 pm on December 26th, 2014

Staff – we just chunk up leftover beef with any left over potatoes, carrots and or onions. Season with marjoram, salt and pepper. Moisten with leftover gravy, or just use a jar of beef gravy. (We also like to throw in about a half cup of red wine). Toss well, then pile into a pie crust, add top crust and crimp. Cut slashes in the crust and cover loosely with foil. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake another 20 -25 minutes until top is golden brown and the gravy is bubbling through the slits.

Amalia’s pot pie sounds wonderful. We don’t do a beef pot pie very often. When we do it is similar to a beef stew (beef, gravy, onions, potatoes and carrots). Then we top with a pie crust. No lower crust.

Watched 3 of the Broadchurch shows. Tried BSD’s suggestion about Subtitles. Made it much easier to understand what they are saying. Slightly distracting at times with the “dog barking, door creaking, crowd mumbling, etc” stuff. Overall, a big improvement.

OK, I have a question for the blog. The two demons kittens are in their jail room and they are crying so piteously and banging on the door that I feel really sorry for them.

Last night they did it to Mr.Staff and he caved. Do I want to let them out and reinforce the lesson that if you make enough noise you will get what you want? Or do I want to leave them in the jail room and let Alice lay on our bed in peace and quiet?

    Please give me your advice.

B,M and L–Sounds almost like beef cobbler (which just gave me an idea for a spinach carrot mushroom version). I did wonder about the initial question–why wouldn’t any pot pie be the same as any other except for the filling?
Belle Starr–No one could ever be as pretty as you. Perhaps the giant was just intimidated by the prospect of coming in second in the gorgeousness sweepstakes. I know I would be.
