BSD, yep, still singing and toe tapping.
Rocky Raccoon visited our front porch to steal food from the birds mom says are our friends. We did our job nicely. Barked ferociously and threw ourselves against the window repeatedly. Gave him what for. Why was peeved? It was only 1:30 am.

I’ll have to check out the list of books. Thank you Spence.

There is a show on the Smithsonian Channel titled “The King’s Skeleton: Richard III Revealed” at 10 AM Eastern. It will probably be repeated but I don’t know when. Here’s a link:

Good morning. We have not read any of those books either. The first one on the list was one we heard him discuss yesterday. It is about the young Jewish men who took over Hollywood and became the founding fathers of the movie industry. Most were poor and born in Europe, migrating to the US as children. I think I will check it out at the library.

Good Morning All–I hope your weekend (why not anticipate?) starts off well.
    B. Stover–thanks for the link. I thought of you and some others on this blog yesterday while reading Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair (the first in a really great but bizarre series). Our heroine is at a local theater that only offers audience-participation performances of Richard III with performers drawn from the audience (“sometimes augmented by “seasoned actors and actresses…at a loose end..Just the week before, a local Richard found himself playing opposite Lola Vavoom, currently starring in Fancy Free in Ludlow…”) A lot like a Rocky Horror Show performance with audience members yelling “When is the winter of our discontent?”, putting on sunglasses at the “made glorious summer” line, etc.
I wish there were something like that offered around here…Actually I wouldn’t mind seeing something called Fancy Free in Ludlow either.
Today I am viewing a required (for staff) video on how to deal with “active shooters” at the library, then researching some mysterious deductions from my last paycheck. I sincerely wish you all a day filled with far more delightful activities.
    Later…

He said I had the mouth of the future because I never got any molars past my 12 year molars. So I didn’t have to have the other molars pulled out like many of my friends.

One of the books that was made into a movie that they did not mention is one of my favorite baseball books. The second book in the baseball series that starts with The Southpaw by Mark Harris. It is called Band the Drum Slowly. I really like it and read about it. Mr. Harris said he wrote it in 3 weeks when he was short of money. I though the movie was very well done.

I can’t believe none of you have read To Kill a Mockingbird. I know you just forgot it. Unless they didn’t put it on the list. I know they talked about it. I seem to know a lot this morning.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a book I read when I was maybe 18 or 20. It had been out a few years and I remember it as interesting at the time but not amazing. I read it again in my 4o’s and it seemed like a whole different book. It seemed significant. My book group read it a few years ago, all of us for at least the second time, and once again it seemed like a whole different book! It seemed stunning, shocking and amazing. Harper Lee may have not even known when she wrote this book how perceptions change with time and some wisdom built up with age. I heartily recommend a re-reading of this book for all of us of a certain age so we can look back and see how we have changed.

  39. ALR
    2:22 pm on January 30th, 2015

P.S. When I say all of us of a certain age I am speaking of 55 and above I guess! My last and third reading was around age 65 and my book group had one of the best and lengthy conversations ever.

    2:40 pm on January 30th, 2015

Wasn’t Harper Lee a neighbor and playmate of Truman Capote?

The dentist thing was my mistake. The post said she went to her vet, not her dentist. I just mentally connected DD and all that sugar to a dental appointment. Sorry to lead everyone astray.

Just finished the first Miss Julia and it was a hoot. You definitely have to read the first one first as it really sets up the story line.

  41. ALR
    2:57 pm on January 30th, 2015

Barb, Miss Julia sure is a hoot of the first degree! I read over the descriptions of each book on Goodreads dot com, where I tend to go for book info, and she get some good and bad reviews. I think some folks take it too seriously and don’t get the fun of it all. I read these books over the years with many books in between each one. A Miss Julia story was like a refreshing break each time and I love her charactorizations of friends and foes! It was always a pleasure to go back to Miss Julia’s house, kind of like a wacky retreat. I hear there will be another adventure with Miss Julia this spring and I am looking forward to that. Not sure I could read each book straight through the whole series without walking away agast and worn out!

Momma is home, and she said I should tell youse that her vet appointment was for her yearly physical and getting her mandatory biometrics form filled out. And, she tells me that her breakfast at DD was a healthy on, if you can believe it: egg white and veggie on flatbread. While she was there, the screen was showing chocolate croissants. Dawson, BSD et al–I just finished the video (AND the required test on the material) and it really left me depressed and somewhat alarmed. (Yeah, “Active Shooter” as opposed to what–I think refers to the potential for a “neutralized” and therefore inactive shooter but it does seem a silly term.) My library is across the plaza from the local PD which is some comfort, soft of.
Thanks for decoding DD (but why go there for eggwhite and veggies?)
Yay for snow in Anchorage! (And, let’s face it, better there than in SoCal.) Enjoy romping, y’all.
T and G’s Mama–Your car is gorgeous and the same color as mine (only many years younger). May you enjoy it for many happy years.
On the To Kill a Mockingbird thread–My story is the same as ALR’s–read it a long time ago and couldn’t see what all the shouting was about. Based on other comments here, it’s maybe time for me to give it another go.

I now jumped to Lisa Scottoline’s new book for a change of pace. I don’t think I will binge read Miss Julia. You are right tho, I think a lot of her humor is subtle or tongue in cheek, and some folks don’t get that.

T & G love the new wheels. That car is sweet – and sick! I can tell it is a Chevy, but what model is it? And I love the color, much sharper than a bright red.

We are going to get the biggest snow of the season this weekend. Nothing like New England got, but probably 6-8″. It has been so sunny that half the back yard is bare grass, so we will get a nice covering again. And the farmers can use the moisture.

I read “To Kill A Mockingbird” when I was a sophomore in high school. Couldn’t put it down. I think it was made as a film the next year starring Gregory Peck. Robert Duvall made his big screen debut as Boo Radley. The character, Dill, was based on Truman Capote, who was Harper Lee’s childhood friend.
