Book Away From Home: Kimpton Hotels and Us
Book Away From Home is an idea we like! When a Kimpton hotel guest is logged into the hotel wireless, their welcome page will announce a “Book Away from Home” library that includes access to an Atria library of 3 books. The program just had its launch at the Kimpton at 70 Park Ave. in New York, and the first three books are: Jamie McGuire’s RED HILL, Diane Setterfield’s BELLMAN & BLACK, and – THE SOUND AND THE FURRY, by Spence.
Welcome Leo.

Greetings!
Hey, way to go, Spence! The Kimpton Hotel has good taste! Would have been most excellent if they had the first three Chet and Bernie books instead!
I am watching the Today show, and the Rockettes were performing. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I saw Kat ou there with her long, long legs. Yeep!
8:42 am on November 8th, 2013
I thought that Crime Bake was today in Boston…not New York.
Good morning all.
8:53 am on November 8th, 2013
Good morning, everyone! Love the “Book Away From Home” idea. It’s grrrrrreat!
Dawson, last night you mentioned your use for toilet paper rolls. Mom laughed and laughed. She thought she was the onlu one to do that. We have an Ashley in the basement that we use in the cold weather so she thought…why waste these? If eggs still came in cardboard cartons, she’d fill them with sawdust then cover that with parafin for starters 🙁
Melanie, we are glad you like the new dr and hope all goes well.
T&G’s Mama, thank you for being there. TY for being a friend. Looking forward to spring and a visit to states we havn’t seen yet.
On the home front mom is hoping to hear from the face special dr so thet she can be rid of “lumpy”.
Mmm, Friday? Let’s have a Free-For-All Friday! (Just for you,Wolfie, miss you)
8:58 am on November 8th, 2013
Good morning! We here are all tip-top. How can we not be? It is FRIDAY!
More hotels should do what The Kimpton Hotel is doing. That is fantastic!
9:05 am on November 8th, 2013
What an honor to have one of the 3 books chosen.
Bee, you are right – Spence has a 3:00 time slot this afternoon in Boston.

I know it’s been a long time since Kirby and I have written, but this computer is so hard to deal with, and the wireless was never installed, so unfortunately we got out of the habit.
I’m afraid I have some bad news. Kirby T. got sick last week. We knew it was serious when we brought home pizza and he didn’t even want any crust. He was hospitalized last Saturday with what turned out to be pancreatitis. After several days of ups and downs, yesterday he went into cardiac arrest and died.
Although we miss him terribly, I’m sure when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge he saw a lot of familiar faces. I’m sure they’re all having a great time romping together.
9:26 am on November 8th, 2013
Kirby T’s Mom: I’m so sorry. I still remember the sestina that he wrote for the blog.
9:28 am on November 8th, 2013
So sorry to hear about Kirby T. We have lost so many on this blog in the past few years. We hope his crossing over was joyful and that he is romping and playing like a pup again.
9:32 am on November 8th, 2013
Kirby’s Mom, We also are very sorry to lose Kirby T. on this side of the Bridge, but we know lots of wonderful friends who will welcome him and play with him on the other side. We are most sorry for your loss though. That is always so very heart-breaking.
sniff

Kirby T., we are newbies but we know that our Emma and Ella met you and y’all are now having a high time.
9:42 am on November 8th, 2013
Melanie, we love Gracie’s new foto in Friends of Chet, a real lady. If only Darah could aspire to such ladylikeness
10:02 am on November 8th, 2013
Our little community has lost another of the true “gentlemen” of the blog. We know that dear Mr. Penworthy had a good and happy life with you, chasing balls to his heart’s content.
We send comforting hugs in your time of sorrow, and thank you for sharing the life and times and adventures of this most excellent little dog.
10:03 am on November 8th, 2013
Kirby T. Penworthy’s Mom . . I am sorry to hear of that sweet poetic dog’s passing. May he have fun where he is. There are a few Newfs over there who will be glad to see him again.
10:16 am on November 8th, 2013
I have been on the phone trying to gather all slides and scans from the past four years. Not an easy task. I will be going back to it shortly.
This morning we had a dusting of snow this morning. It is gone now. I took a picture, but haven’t had time to look at it.
The snow is a month late for our area.
I’ll be back after lunch.
10:49 am on November 8th, 2013
Kirby’s Mom, we are so very sorry for your loss. It sounds like it was a fairly quick crossing and sometimes that is a blessing. Hugs and Purrs for you and the family from Texas.

Wow! COLD here. We think winter is coming with a vengeance. Is this to get mom ready for AK in March? Maybe.
11:17 am on November 8th, 2013
Congratulations.
It would be an excellent surprise to find The Sound and the Furry on your wireless at the Kimpton Hotels.
Kirby T. Penworthy III’s Mom: I think of Kirby often and occasionally that wonderful portrait by GLAD shows up and amazes me. He does have many old friends from the blog to welcome him in the land of peace and unlimited balls and treats. Hugs to you and your family. (By the way, the blanket you made is Ruby Jo’s “go-to” blankie when sitting in her car seat.)
One inch of fresh snow on the ground this morning.
11:49 am on November 8th, 2013
HOH! It is very windy and cold here too, according to Mom. She is hiding indoors. How is she ever going to make it Way Up North, in Alaska? You tell me.
12:02 pm on November 8th, 2013
The hotel guests that choose The Sound and the Furry will not be able to put it down once they start it.
Kirby’s Mom, We are so sorry about your loss of Kirby, sniff, sniff. He was a great little guy and he was welcomed with open paws at Rainbow Bridge. The painting GLAD did of him is awesome and we are so glad you have it. Hugs from us to you.
12:26 pm on November 8th, 2013
Kirby T’s Mom, I cannot begin to express how very sorry I am for your loss. Kirby was much loved on this blog. He will forever be in your heart, and will forever be remembered here at the blog. He has lots of friends waiting for him at the bridge.
He left such a nice message on the “Rose” quilt. Whenever I snuggle up in the quilt, I will be thinking of Kirby. sniff
12:29 pm on November 8th, 2013
Meashka: Tell your mom that I bundle up like nobody’s business to go on my walks and have received several comments from the locals like “What are you going to do when winter really gets here?” These are the ones that run from the door of the building to the door of their trucks, never feeling the brunt of the cold temperatures.
12:30 pm on November 8th, 2013
Meashka and HOH: if you think it is cold now….Remember the secret is layers, layers, and more layers. And for sure, you must wear a hat! Don’t concern yourself with fashion, WARMTH is the main goal. I did not care one bit that I looked like the Michelin Man, no I did not.
12:32 pm on November 8th, 2013
Sunowing, here now. Flurry in the sun.
A morning of tears, phone calls and paperwork.
Exhausted now. Going to hide.
The following is how I changed some one’s attitude.
1:02 pm on November 8th, 2013
Rose is making me laugh.
Melanie: Leave it to Churchill.
1:02 pm on November 8th, 2013
I have been missing Kirby T. Penworthy and now am bereft to hear of his passing. I hope Kirby’s mom is comforted by many years of good memories and that she will resume the blog habit and check in with us when she can.
I hope that when the 2015 calendar is produced that the verso of the back cover could include an “In Memoriam” page. {{{sniff}}}
1:07 pm on November 8th, 2013
Kirby’s mom. We are so sorry here in Chevy Chase to hear about Kirby T. He had been an integral part of this blog family for a very long time and he will be sorely missed. In particular, we will remember his fortitude and determination, which was a true inspiration to us all. I do know that he was greeted warmly on the other side of the bridge by many old friends, with Wookie leading the way. May your sorrow be tempered by the memories of all the joy and happiness he brought to you and your family. Also, while I understand some of your technical difficulties, I sincerely hope that you will continue to be part of the blog. Please know that you and Kirby will always have a special place in our hearts.
1:21 pm on November 8th, 2013
sniff…Very well said Wookie and Teddy’s Dad.

2:01 pm on November 8th, 2013
Ok – it is now official – HOH’s Mom is Silly.
Warm….but silly.
And not for today’s Julia Child (like) cooking tip. When roasting acorn squash, cut the squash in half, clean out the seeds, and cut a tiny slice off the most prominent rounded ridge on the back, thereby making a flat surface for the squash to roast upon. In a pan large enough to lay out the number of squash halves, fill with about a half inch of water. Lay the squash cut side down and place in a 375 oven for about a half hour. ***Now- this is the part of the recipe that I am adding. When you place the squash in the pan and water – PLACE A TOOTHPICK UNDER AN EDGE OF EACH SQUASH HALF, WITH THE TIP OF THE TOOTHPICK PROTRUDING. THIS WAY, THE WATER IN THE PAN WILL NOT BOIL AND CREATE A SUCTION CUP THAT WILL REQUIRE THE ARMY CORP OF ENGINEERS TO REMOVE THE #$%@#$%^ SQUASH HALVES FROM THE PAN****
Once the halves are chiseled off the pan, take a number of deep breaths and calm down. Then empty the water, place the halves back in the roasting pay cut side up, fill with your favorite type of stuffing, and return to a 350 over for 30 minutes.
Ok, I feel much better now.
2:02 pm on November 8th, 2013
What’s wrong with the facebookie foto? They are holding each other’s books?
2:04 pm on November 8th, 2013
HOH mom is once again hanging from the rafters!
Kirby’s mom, we are so sorry to hear of his passing. We felt a special kinship with him, being in the “small dog of no particular lineage” category. Well, Annie and Biddie anyway. I am mostly Min-Pin, or so they tell me. Anyway, peace to you at this sad time.
2:06 pm on November 8th, 2013
OK T&G’s Mama: Am warm but silly. Gotcha. Will have acorn squash later this week. Tonight is chili. (like mom is chilly) Dogs are barking! will be back soon.
2:07 pm on November 8th, 2013
Mom cuts a acorn squash in half and cooks them in the microwave.
Julia Child, she is not.

Chilli Silly what the hey! we be here!
3:00 pm on November 8th, 2013
That is the way we cooked our acorn squash last week, minus the toothpick. 30 minutes in the water, than filled with a miniature meatloaf, and baked another half hour. Very festive.
Melanie, hang in their and make those people send the info, now not later!
3:31 pm on November 8th, 2013
SnowBella: Did you ever get some heat in your hotel room last night?
Tupper’s Mama: Laughing myself silly at your Julia Child post, happy no one was injured.
Light snow with sunshine, 20 degrees F., cancelled my dental “consultation” and am going back to the heating pad to read some more Hillerman. Spider Woman’s Daughter started out with a bang and is hard to resist.
3:32 pm on November 8th, 2013
Youse guys are making me laugh.
I just finished playing in the dirt. Inside. My sedum carpet arrived, but not my Hen and Chicks. I am wintering them over inside under a full spectrum light. It is not a warm light, but cold, ?
I was wondering why we were getting tips on cooking until I read the shouting. Snicker.
Love the pictures and the hat.
Here’s one of Mattie. She wouldn’t move, and got vacuumed.
3:33 pm on November 8th, 2013
Like Dawson, I have retreated to the heating pad.
3:33 pm on November 8th, 2013
HOH: You in that fur hat got me laughing too although it’s hard to do while standing on my head.
3:49 pm on November 8th, 2013

Hugs going out to your Mom during this sad time for her.

Have you ever been on the telephone, dealing with a corporation and had to finally question yourself as to whether YOU speak English?
((((sigh)))))
Anyway – the good news is that we had an interview for a magazine article. (totally different phone call) Yes it is a small, online, quarterly magazine, but we will take any good press we can get.
5:02 pm on November 8th, 2013
Kirby T – farewell. You are a Southern gentleman with the heart of a Husker. Head bumps to your family.
When the boy was in grad school in Chicago the parental units stayed at the Kimpton Allegro, in the theater district, near where he lived. It’s a fun, funky hotel with floors that creak in the night. Congrats to Chet and Spence on the Welcome Page.
Twice Mom has ordered from Ebay and twice the credit card was compromised a few hours later. The first time she thought it was a fluke. Has anyone else had a problem with Ebay/Paypal?

Mr Staff is reading the official guide to Anchorage. Lots of good info. You can get it from Anchorage.net and it is FREE!

That reminds me that I have some second hand clothes for someone who doesn’t have warm stuff on hand.
I have a pair of LLBean flannel lined jeans, size 18, that are now too big for me. They are wonderfully warm. They have the high waist so if you wanted a low waist don’t bother with them.
Also I bought a XXL black Snowhook hoodie sweatshirt that is now way too big for me darn it all.
First come first served.
5:13 pm on November 8th, 2013
Dawson, We felt the same way about Hillerman’s new book. Good from the get-go!
Barb is going out to pick some lettuce from the garden. Yup, it is still growing. And we have a few beets left, too. Snow is expected in the next few days.

KirbyT’s Mom: Last week I couldn’t help but think about KirbyT. I had no idea why my late night friend from this here blog was on my mind. Last night, I was looking at photos from our meet and greet in Atlanta. What a special day that was. I am sorry to hear of KirbyT’s passing. Like others have said, I have no doubt he was welcomed by many from this here blog. Please don’t stay away too long. You are missed. Head bumps.

11:15 pm on November 8th, 2013
This is what I was afraid of…we are not getting the Avalanche games. This doesn’t make much sense because most people here would root for a Colorado team. It isn’t like we have a professional hockey team. Maybe a few of their games will turn up on ESPN.
Staff, very nice song.
Alice, We are going to have such fun at the Olympics.
