Blue/Gray

“One hundred and fifty years ago today,” says Admin.

“Lots of dogs involved,” says Spence.

They’re quiet for a while. Me, too; no particular reason.

“Didn’t you write a book about the Civil War?” says Spence.

“More about reenactors, actually,” says Admin.

“Who really really get into it?”

“That kind of thing.”

“So,” says Spence, “are you of the school that believes that the terrible sacrifice made us great?”

“Yes.”

Contest clarification: Any friend of Chet is eligible! Any number of limbs will do, or none. Chet’s the inclusive type, as readers of the series probably know. And, as a smart someone has pointed out, this is more of a drawing than a contest. But why not?

Welcome Mick, Min, Belle and Nino, Sassy, Hubble, Orange-Toy Dude, Staff, Brewzer, Keely a.k.a. Cutie, Lily from Down Under.

Chet! We didn’t know about that book. Thanks for telling us about this conversation. Mom just downloaded it to her Kindle.

We are feeling rather gloomy again, reading about the commemoration ceremonies at Ft. Sumter.

Sorry we couldn’t post yesterday. Mom was at work all day as usual, and then when she got home we all went for a long walk! Finished up the evening with brats on the grill and one of her Middle East chick pea dishes. But we see that someone is working on adding points on the map. We are in Southeastern Pennsylvania…about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia. We would be honored to be added to the map.

Good morning! I think G & B has us on the map, but just in case, we are 10 miles from Wi border, and 50 miles east of Iowa.

Tell us more about the dogs involved in the Civil War. Were the message carriers?

I didn’t realize that the civil war started on this day. And I never realized dogs were involved. Interesting. Spence and Admin: Why not indeed!

    Good morning B&M and Howlers.

I enjoyed Last of the Dixie Heroes.

I’m going to school today to meet with my TA. We’re going to work out her thesis subject and decide what she will do as TA. (I’m going to have her research the artwork that goes with the various periods in literature we cover. Fun!)

Admin thinks the sacrifice made us great. We think it made us better but that it somehow feels like it never really ended. Until it ends, and the wounds heal, we cannot be great. Thats the opinion here in Oley for what its worth.

We made the Oley Orange You Glad You Asked Salad….wow was that good !!!

T&G: I love leg of lamb!! (I’ve never prepared it.)

G&BB: For the map–I think you already have me just outside of Ann Arbor in Michigan.

I could never agree that any war makes any country great because war is not a solution but everything that is opposite of civilized. (Sorry. I’ll go back to artwork and literature now.)

Barb fixed leg of lamb years ago, but it is too much meat unless you have a crowd. Bee, do you ever grill lamb chops? Expensive but yummy. We have also done shoulder chops/steaks which are less expensive, but still good. They look sort of like a small pork steak.

We agree on war, Barb has always been more of a dove than a hawk.
And it does seem like some Southerns have not gotten over the Civil War. What is it that they call it? The War of Northern Aggression I think.

    Good morning all –
Oley – glad yo liked the salad. It does sound kinda weird, but it is good! We have it a lot in the summer, and if we make extra, its even better the next day.
You asked why the CW gets to you so much. hmmmm. This is a little off the wall, but here goes.
Mama loves the ocean. She loves the colors and the scent and the air and the waves and the beach..you name it. But whatever you do, don’t put her on a boat. Her heart gets tights, and she gets really scared. Now the weird part – if she sees anything about the Titanic (chills down our spine just typing the name) she starts crying and gets physically sick. No, she’s never seen either movie. She has never been to an exhibit or had any kind of real contact with it. But she reacts very strongly to it. And on the next level of weirdosity – her brother is fascinated by it. Has books, knows all kinds of factoids, even owns a little tiny momento. (shudder)
She doesn’t know if she beleives in past lives, but someone who has seen her reactions says she was on that boat….
Wonder if they would say that maybe you had been there in the times of the CW?

    Good Morning All.

G&BooBear: We are on an island off the coast of Washington in the Pacific Northwest. Lots of room to run like the wind – which I love to do.

    B. You could do something like Staff’s avatar, or how about “adopt a dog” for the contest? I’m sure you’ve already found a solution.

Here is something for the Corgis and for all of us to start the day with a smile.

Last of the Dixie Heroes looks great. I’m going to download it as soon as I get my kindle from upstairs.

The Civil War vs The War of Northern Aggression: Did it make us great? Before that question can be answered I think there are other questions that should be considered.

Was losing a generation of working aged people worth it?

What was the war about exactly? Was it economic or slavery? Both?

If slavery was one of the reasons was there no other way to free the slaves without resorting to violence?

I don’t know. I am not a historian of this period. I have lived in VA and MA and IL. There were and are many opinions about the War. And not necessarily certain opinions from the South or the North, but combined.

Good things came out of it and bad things came out of it.

As happens in all of life’s situations.

  14. Barb & Maggie
    11:09 am on April 12th, 2011

T & G, Barb thinks there might be such a thing as past lives (don’t want to freak out the conservatives). She has always had a strong connection with the pioneer days and Native American ideas toward nature, animals, etc. She gets an emotional joy from working the soil, tending animals, storing food for the winter. In general, things she did not grow up with in suburbia.

One time a 30 years ago, a neighbor said, “Barb, if I were a pioneer going west, I would have wanted to take you with me”. She took that as quite a compliment. However, she does not connect with the idea of nature being there just for our use, but rather that we need to coexist, be respectful, and tread lightly while we are here. I think that is more of the Native American philosophy.

To us,it is quite believable that you have past memory of the Titanic.

Melanie has some good points about the war. It was not just about freeing the oppressed, but had economic overtones, too, which had a greater affect on the southern way of life than the northern.

BearSD – love the video – except when they got on the boat….

Wolfie – Mama showed her Dad that video yesterday – she was right, he really loved it. He says things like the ideas in the song all the time. He even has a sign over his sink with the Will Rogers quote “If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went.”
She went to the website of the lady who sang it, and has ordered the book and the cd and all that stuff for her Dad. Thanks again.

  20. Tupper and Gilly
    11:52 am on April 12th, 2011

Dawson – Corgi energy is legend. Except when you are a dignified, middle age Corgi like myself. Gilly, on the other hand, is just nuts. Our fenced area is almost an acre, and she can make it around the perimeter in about 2.3 seconds. Especially if there is a willing squirrel just teasing to be chased.
Wonder what she would do if she ever caught one – squirrels are not much for being herded…

  21. Barb & Maggie
    11:57 am on April 12th, 2011

T & G, I think a squirrel would react very much like a rat. They don’t much like being herded either, but someone has to do it, and I have rat herding down to a skill level obtained by only a select few!
Gilly, come over sometime and I’ll race you around my perimeter. I have longer legs, but it might still be close!

Why don’t you stowaway, and come hang with me!I’ll show you all my house redecorating tips, using ALL the shoes in Mama’s closet, we can race around the yard and herd squirells (too early for the snakes to be out yet) and I’ll show you where the hole used to be in the fence – it’s a mystery to me as to where it went – it was right there when I left it…now its gone!

This book is one we will look into. I would like to know more of the background of this War between the North & the South. It is so difficult for us to understand, especially over a century later. O.Howlers: Perhaps it is as T&G says – or your deep feeling on this matter come from some ancestoral memory. I have yet to ask my brother-in-law in Montana his viewpoint on this. I know of his interest in all things historical. I would be especially interested in learning more about the nation within the nation who participated.

Haven’t had too much experience in eating lamb and none in cooking it.

He was a devout, traditional Catholic, but he swore he was a WW II fighter pilot who lost his life in battle the same year that Ron was born. What! Dawson & O.Howlers – no x-files? (like Melanie, ours was a household with two boys) Liked both your Eisenhower quotes. We know, although he was a military person, he was not an advocte of war. A very wise man in our opinion.

Barb, the story of the WWII fighter pilot is facinating. Also, T&G’s fear of water, thoughts on the Titanic and O.Howler’s feelings of unrest about the Civil War. We are inclined to believe there is something to the past lives theory and also are very interested in anything to do with quantum physics.

A civil war battle was fought in NM…the Battle of Glorieta Pass.
In March of 1862 some Texans decided that they would secure the Santa Fe Trail for the Confederacy. The Confederate troops marched up the Rio Grande past Albuquerque and encountered the Union troops on the south end of the Sangre de Cristo Mountians.
at Glorieta Pass. The Texans won that battle but lost the war in the rest of NM and the Southwest and went back home to Texas.
The battle of Glorieta Pass is often referred to as the Gettysburgh of the West. Glorieta Pass may be one of the most scenic battlefields to visit to watch a reenactment.

Hey, y’all! When Mom and Dad bought this house they were told it was 30 years old, but then Mom did some research and found out it was built in 1888 — a wee bit more than 30 years old! So Mom went to the local historic society to see if they had any information about the house. The lady there was really nice, except when Mom said something about the house not being around during the Civil War. Then the lady said, “Around here we call that the War of Northern Aggression.” Oh. Mom, who is definitely not from around here, says she almost felt like apologizing!

Crap!….Our baseball game was delayed because of rain in the Big Apple…grunt!…So we are watching the latest episode that Comcast will allow us to of The Event….sniff!…There is a torture scene in this show that quite frankly surpassed the hand hitting in Justified that so riled Mollie. Someone here is shocked that they allowed this to be shown on prime time TV…sneeze! …The intriguing thing is trying to figure out who the other ‘Sleeper’ is in the Whitehouse, so we will of course keep watching the show…grunt!…I’m stumped right now as to who that sleeper might be….sniff!

    Hey there Dawson and BStover,
I put your quilt squares up and they are being checked over for evil things and hopefully will be posted tonight. By the way B, I said that you said that Chet was a ‘good read’.

    Heh heh heh,
OK so I didn’t say that. But I wanted to.

  71. Staff
    9:22 pm on April 12th, 2011

Speaking of the Civil War. Mr.Staff reads history and just about anything he can get about the Revolution and the Civil War fascinates him. He read a history book this winter that claimed that one of the ’causes’ of the Revolution was that at that time England was outlawing slavery and was going to impose it on the Americas. The rich land owners of the south were opposed to that change. (Slavery had been abolished in England in 1772)

So the United States was created, not so much for ‘freedom’ as we all have been told, but for a lot of reasons, one of which was to have the right to ‘own’ slaves. That fight finally was resolved with the civil war.

Gives you a whole new light on ‘freedom’ doesn’t it?

Thank you Bree, and good night.

Liz, Happy Birthday to you! Enjoy the dinner with your father. Do you have other family that is going to be there for the celebration?

Yes,Liz, Barb’s philosophy goes along with a famous Native American proverb that goes something like “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” We have to keep in mind that the earth’s resources are not infinite, and we have to take care of what we have, or there will not be such a great environment for our future generations.

We are looking forward to another gastranomical delight tomorrow evening. I am hoping I can sneak a ride out there to play with Gilly. Maybe Dawson has a wild trip planned, or Wolfie can blur by and pick me up. What do you think, guys?

Hi everyone – we’re home, but so tired, we are probably going to just head off for bed. Still covering for the sick co-worker, and this job is the very definition of a “physical” job. So, doing the double shifts, day after day after day is getting harder. And now, we hear coworker is out for the month. oh well…just keep thinking paycheck, paycheck, paycheck, (soft fluffy bed) paycheck, paycheck…
Tomorrow is Mama’s usual day off, so she only has to do one shift for her coworker. Then home to cook for the party. Sure hope everyone can come. Main courses are prime rib, roast turkey and leg of lamb, but we will only put up recipes for the side dishes, ok? Sure hope there is something for everybody.
    Talk to you all tomorrow.

Leg of lamb tomorrow here and there, fantastic! I’ll be on holiday tomorrow and Friday so i’ll check in for the recipes later. Incidentally, Julia Child has a recipe for a garlic sauce for roast lamb which is sensational.

Great words of wisdom, Barb, and very true, nowadays more than ever as far as the environment is concerned (and the creatures that live in it). No, no other family, only me and dad and Crick, who of course is as thrilled about roast lamb as I am.

Attempting to make your ex-spouse jealous is among the worst
points you can do if you would like to come back with your ex-spouse, because all it
is going to do is reveal him that you have gone on which he needs to do the same.
