Gray And Blue

“I’m from Tennessee originally,” Colonel Bob said.

“I knew that,” said Bernie.

“My great great whatever he was grandfather fought for the south, like yours,” Colonel Bob said. “Rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest, in fact.”

“Not at Fort Pillow, I hope?” Bernie said.

“Fraid so.”

Bernie shook his head. Colonel Bob shook his head, too. I just lay there in our kitchen. It was real early in the morning and I wasn’t quite awake, a nice, heavy kind of feeling.

“I dropped out of high school and enlisted,” Colonel Bob said.

“I knew that, too,” said Bernie.

“But the night before I shipped out, I happened to meet this girl.”

“Yeah?”

    More treats for the humans!

Chet, I know how you feel, "not quite awake, a nice, heavy kind of feeling."

For me, that means another cup of coco.

So it appears that Colonel Bob was very young when he met this girl. Sort of wondering if this has anything to do with him having a son. . .

Another morning of research. Fort Pillow certainly has an infamous history. When I took history in high school, this wasn't mentioned. At that time we lived in VA, and the War of Northern Aggression tended to be talked about in a one sided manner.

I was from the north. . . Had no idea at first what the WofNA was until someone finally told me it was the Civil War. Tried to become a southern bell.

    It didn't take.

I read Dog On It 2 weeks ago, so I quickly went to get Thereby Hangs a Tail. First Book made me feel great, Dog On It, not so much. Chet has a lump and you are waiting on biopsies. Do you mind sharing your plans for Chet? I read fiction to feel good. I get enough pain with the news. I did not see the need for Chet's lump, took away my good feeling. Just curious as I have no intent of reading fiction that makes me fell bad. Thanks, your first book was top notch.

    What great info! Oooh.

Both Bernie and Col. Bob's great (or another great) grandfathers (1864) fought for the Confederates at the Ft. Pillow massacre. I would love to know more about them.

Then Col. Bob, of high school age, meets this girl right before he ships out. Don't go back to sleep, Chet.

Mom loves that song, "A Horse With No Name", but had never actually seen the lyrics in print before. This is vague, but she says the song captures the feeling of the desert. It some very strange way, it also makes her think of Coronado's brutal visit to the Southwest. Umm, she also thinks that they were stoned when they wrote that song.

WOW!!! Thanks for all the Siberian Husky videos that are up there today. Mom and I really enjoyed them. I was going to go outside for some fresh air while mom did her civil war research, but we got stalled at the computer watching husky videos. Rio. FYI, I've never had relations good, bad or otherwise, with Yoda, although as you may have discerned, Star Wars is where my name originates. By the time I got to my forever home, I had had three names, the last of which was Wookie, and my forever mom and dad decided to stick with that. Apparently I do bear at least a slight resemblance to Chewbacca (definitely a good looking lad) and I can make the funny sound he makes, so that how the name came to be and why it stuck. And to be sure, the force is definitely with me. Wookie

Yoda also speaks like songs in the Pirates of Penzance.

Youngest son, struggling actor, and I took a trip of 5 hours singing all the songs in that operetta. Had a blast.

Trouble was when we got there we couldn't stop our syntax from being weird.

Wookie! Our Ros sounds like Chewbacca also. Especially when she is carrying around a marrow bone in her mouth with the hole facing you. Then she echos when she's talking.

Sam- it is discouraging to hear that "those" songs are of your mother's generation. I appear also to be of your mother's generation then.

Rio – Horse, huh? I've always know that it also meant heroin, but never connected it to the song. Love the song. Been singing it now for hours.

Thanks I give to you, think I.

    B. Stover -Trying to become a Southern Bell; first I had to understand all those people. For the first six months our conversations consisted of "What?" and "Wha?" Then I realized these people talked about 7 times slower than I did. We tried meeting in the middle. They sped up and I slowed down. They were very pleased when I switched from "you guys" to "you all."

The "first families" didn't know what to think of us. We were from the North but some of our roots were in that county. Even had a town named after one of the ancestors. Got married at 18 to a "first family", supported ex while he started a business. Became a bank teller, had to wear dresses, joined the Junior League. Hmmm. I'm guessing that's where it all went wrong. Pearls and I just aren't an item together, then I got a raise at the bank that was WAY less than a guy got and we had started at the same time. I was told that I didn't need to support a family. I thought SO WHAT. And said so. Was told I could take that raise or quit, but I couldn't tell anyone what I made. Soooooo, I said "I'm out of here" which really surprised them all, and then I made SURE that all the women bank tellers knew how much I made and SURPRISE, I made more than the tellers who had been there for years. Snicker, that bank got a surprise.

Went to college, had two kids, got real sick with HCV and my ex left.

So I went back NORTH! Whew, that was great. Except we moved to North of Boston with my parents and I couldn't understand anyone there!

Now I help raise drooly Newfoundlands, wear jeans and Big Dog sweatshirts and live in the western part of the state. Much more fun!

Ha! Left out teaching in a Southern girls Boarding School, where the girls liked me, but again, I didn't fit in.

Someone said a barbecue and I came in jeans. All the other "ladies" were in dresses and hats and heels that sunk into the grass.

Also had to deal with dinners there occasionally. Do you know that there are such things as "napkin checks?" The first time I was caught with a used (gasp) napkin. So the next time I took 2 napkins and used one and showed the other.

That caught on at my table and all the girls passed their napkin checks.

Now we're lucky if we have paper towels at the table.

And in other news, I just escaped from the grasp of the Pit-Bully today. We were on a walk, Megan and I, and I saw him. He looked at me and barked and barked and barked. So I barked back, but then he almost got off his leash, so I ran away, out of my harness. Megan chased me again and caught me. AGAIN! Now, AGAIN, she hates my guts. But Megan said that my cute looks make it hard to stay made at me, so I guess it would be over pretty soon. I love me….and my looks? Cha-ching!

OOOO Now we know what Col Bob was doing the night before he shipped out! Even if Chet doesn't. 😉

Melanie, At age 9 I was moved from Michigan to Hopewell, VA. Fun things I remember. We had a neighbor whose name was Boy. I kept trying to make it Boyd and he kept correcting me. That next year, 1958, or maybe early winter 1959 they had snow and it stayed and the street outside our house had a slick of ice on it and I would get out my skates and skate down its little hill. (Or so I'm told) Anyway, all the neighborhood kids wanted skates for Christmas, but the freezing thing only happened once ever 25 years or so.

Mom, who never sews, remembers going to PTA and being told (to her horror) to make me a little dress, "Just a simple gathered skirt and puffed sleeves, you won't even need a pattern" for a school program. There is a picture of me in one so maybe she did it, but I suspect J C Penneys. We moved back north after 2 years there.

I suppose I was just in a rush and missed it, but it could be that Admin is embarrassed that it was so out of date and it is being redone now too.

I did want to look at the Siberian Husky video's. I suppose I can just search for that on Youtube.

How was your 24? Did Jack kill 20 more people tonight? Have you ever counted how many people Jack kills in his 24 hours? That man has to go!!!

Abbie the Kitty is a Quaker. :-) And she is looking forward to the Tutor.

We can't believe that B.Stover (teacher that she is) did not know that southerners refer to the civil war as the war of northern aggression!

And we agree with Rio…Princess has to be either a Pom or a similar breed. That's just how we picture her…aren't Maltese a little bigger than the toy breeds?

Loved Melanie's story about her experience in the South! Luckily, Texas is more rough and ready than the "old" south. We don't have silly rules like that (unless one is "old money") We wouldn't know about that.

Rio, don't let anyone bad mouth Jack Bauer!!! He is the best of the best!!!

We haven't had time to check out all the videos yet, but did see the on of Bizkit sleepwalking. Poor fellow must have some serious fuzzbuts he's chasing in his sleep. But we did laugh out loud at the video.

Don't know if anyone is still up, but we enjoyed all the comments and discussions today. But Chet, please pay attention to Col Bob and Bernie…we think more details are coming!
