Big #’s

Prof came over for dinner last night. We ate out back, with the canyon going red and then dark. Prof’s our go-to guy when it comes to following the money. He has a big round belly and loves to eat. Bernie grilled burgers. They were great.

“Guess what the population of the world will be in 2050,” Prof said.

“No idea,” said Bernie.

“Nine billion.”

Bernie didn’t look happy to hear that. “When is enough enough?” he said.  He was quiet, staring into the dark canyon. “What’s the dog population of the planet?”

“No one knows, exactly,” Prof said. “Estimates are in the 400 million range.”

Did I have a clue what they were talking about? These were numbers, right? I stop at 2, which is plenty.

Bernie poured some bourbon. “One day there’ll be just one kind of animal left.”

“The two-legged kind?” said Prof. Hey! Were they talking about birds? Don’t like ’em.

“Yeah,” Bernie said.

“Don’t forget the insects,” Prof said. “Plus bacteria and viruses.”

“Something to look forward to,” Bernie said.

Looking forward to something – my kind of talk. I wagged my tail.

Chet – People sure could learn a lot from your tribe. Dogs always look on the bright side.

Maybe it's because a dog has a tail to wag. Or maybe it's not the tail. Cats have a tail and when they wag that tail you know you've done something they don't like.

I'll have to think about this.

400 million in your tribe and yet most dogs are forced to live separated from their own kind. The saddest are those chained to a dog house in their back yard with scummy bowl of water–only to be yelled at if they vocalize with other dogs in the neighborhood.

Chet…did you know that in some Asian countries, puppies are raised for food? Let’s not think about either of these horrors.

Hey Chet, I know you and Bernie like to watch movies with your guys. There's a show you'd like– ever hear of the Dog Whisperer? Before you started writing, that show was my regular "dog fix." Not that you need advice from anyone– you and Bernie have a great thing going. But it is a great way to watch a bunch of your guys getting to live in a pack.
