Bernie’s Super Bowl Pick

“OK, two teams with blue-collar names.”

Bernie’s at his desk, scribbling away on sheets of paper and muttering to himself.

“Steelers make steel, packers pack meat. Which is bluer? Hard to say. Then there are the uniforms. Black and gold; green and yellow. What’s my favorite color, Chet?”

I didn’t know, waited to hear.

“Guess I don’t have one,” Bernie says. “Maybe I could add up the weights of all the players on both teams and go with the heaviest. On the other hand, they might also be the slowest.”

He takes a deep breath, reaches for the phone.

“Dominic?” he says.

Dominic the bookie? Oh, no.

“Five grand on the Packers.”

On the other end, I can hear Dominic saying something about whether we have five grand.

“Don’t worry about a thing,” Bernie says.

I go look for something to gnaw.

Rio. Speaking as someone who loves to cooks and had to eliminate ALL SODIUM from her cooking when her Mom lived with here with renal failure I can tell you that while the transition to using lots of herbs rather than salt takes a little time it is really a lot of fun. Try growing small pots of herbs indoors and then just pick a little bit of this and little bit of tat until you begin to find your favorite combination. During warmer months, sewing a few seeds of different easy to grow herbs such as basil, cilantro, dill and then planting some perennials such as lemon thyme and rosemary..its lots of fun!

Mostly getting rid of sodium in your diet requires conscientious reading of labels – the majority of your salt intake probably comes from both process and even natural foods, so plan on an extra 15 minutes when you grocery shop and read those labels – that will really, really help (for example bread contains a lot of salt.) Good luck – you can do it and you’ll never miss the extra salt. Debbie

Good luck with that, Chet. That’s a lot of dog treats that Bernie’s betting. Hope you both win big.

The Super Bowl notwithstanding, we are gearing up for baseball season by watching one of our all-time favorite baseball movies — A League of Their Own. We had forgotten how funny Jon Lovitz was as the scout at the beginning of the movie. Great cast! Including Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, just to mention a few. And a really sweet and poignant story. Most importantly, it’s all about BASEBALL! Wookie

Isn’t the pocket watch already in hock?

    This could be really bad.

    9:52 am on February 5th, 2011

Well, at least Bernie didn’t do some sort of point spread. I know that can be a problem. I don’t know HOW it can be a problem. He is rooting for the same team I am.

I hope the watch stays with Bernie.

Riö: Mrs. Dash user here. It gets to a point that when food has salt on it, it’s too salty for your taste. We tend to cook without salt because of Dan. I am a low salt person. It doesn’t matter for Zoë.

We tried an experiment last night. We have a dog who likes poopsicles (and yes, that’s what I meant to write), we put red pepper on deposits last night instead of picking them up. They were still there this morning. Not sure how long we’ll have to keep this up, but supposedly the dog will learn.

I’ll put a nickle on the Steelers.
I’m somewhere on the trail between home and Arlington. We left last night because it’s been too warm during the day. The dog team is packing their own food and mine. Mine is dry meat (elk), bannock and quinoa tabouli – made without salt but extra garlic.

Hello Dominic – hey listen, there’s some joker going around calling bookies and using my name. He’s bettting wild amounts on the Super Bowl.
What? You mean he already called you? Hey Dom, you know me – I don’t make wild bets like that..heck my pocket watch is still in hock.
How much? 5K – hahaha…so, Dominic, you know it’s not a real bet, right? I mean, this guy is just trying to get me in trouble.
Yeah, ok, so we’ll talk after the game.
What? Am I placing a bet? Why no, Dom..I kinda thought I would make that my New Year resolution…no betting while the watch is in hock.
Oops. gotta go..Chet is looking at the back door like he means it.
(sorry Bernie – we’re just trying to save you from yourself)

Bernie, that’s a big, big bet. Perhaps you should bet only for fun. That could put a serious dent in Chet’s treats from Rover&Co if the Packers don’t win. Remember tin futures???????

Hi, everybody. We’ve been off the computer for the last day and a half. Dad had the computer out in his shop where he’s rebuilding a 56 Chevy. It has been very cold here by southeast Texas standards, but we didn’t get any of the snow that was forcast. It stayed up in Macy’s area…and we really wanted it. Instead we got ice…lots of ice. All kinds of accidents (something like 800) on the roads Thursday night and Friday morning. Luckily, both Mom’s and Dad’s work places decided to do the smart thing and close on Friday. Dad played in his shop on the old car and Mom watched old movies on TV (she really should have been working around the house, but NOT!!)

The pictures and descriptions you guys have posted are amazing. Can’t imagine what that is like. Melanie, your house and the Newf pic in the snow were awesome. B., your pictures from your recliner (think those were several days ago) are beautiful too. SiberH, sorry New Mexico is in such shortage but we’re really glad your Mom & Dad are prepared and the shelter animals were handled so quickly.

Sorry this is so long, but had to catch up. We will see all of you on Macy’s hillside tomorrow (and very glad we’re coming since Mom and Dad have people coming over to watch the game and we want to be out of here)!!

    Go Packers. G&BB

Yes!… The Packers all the way baby!…heh!… Hey, when Bernie collects his winnings maybe he will donate it to the Mission Fund because I for one have not seen a red cent coming in from those greedy Kats….grunt!

Debbie!…My friend read your post up above and she is looking very dubious right now…sniff!…This is going to be hard on her. She dwelled on it all night long but is resolved to radically change her eating habits even if they don’t seem so bad (to her)…grunt!…Every one and their dog will be at the grocery store today buying chips and dip and hot wings and all that stuff she was planning on having…grump!…Now it will be fruit and salad stuff and her new pal Mrs. Dash….huff!

    11:33 am on February 5th, 2011

Dawson, hope you are making good time. And what are those things you mentioned after elk?

Bernie, maybe we should have put the 5K in tin futures. Suggesting a cash position might have been short-sighted on Barb’s part. Too tempting for Mr. Little. Well, we think the Packers are going to win, so maybe it will be ok, but we are too conservative to have plunked big $$ down on a game. T & G, maybe you phone call will work.

Off for some Saturaday morning shopping.

  15. Melanie
    11:35 am on February 5th, 2011

Riö: Tell your friend they make potato chips with hardly any salt and some with no salt. If we have the no salt I like to dip them into sour cream. The ones with hardly any salt are pretty good on their own.

YSAS does a chicken thing in the oven. He takes a rub with no salt (your friend could use Mrs. Dash, one of the hotter spiced ones) he then coats that on to cut up chicken and bakes it. Very good.

Siber – quick note while we are pulled over on a siding. The train trip is going very well. Only problem is that the club car doesn’t stock chew sticks, so you may want to grab a couple to bring along. We’ll be in ABQ soon…get the lear jet warmed up.
Macy – we’ll be on the hill soon so we can help you set up the party. Anything last minute you need picked up on the way?

Food!… My friend is reading all of your suggestions and says, “Thanks”….sniff!…She has to go to the store soon, but is dragging her feet…snorkel!…Also, she wants to start another quilling project but can’t decide on what to make…grunt!…Things are kind of up in the air around here this morning…heh!

I snatched the keys from my dad and got it souped up real nicely so we can make great time (we should make it to the party about an hour after I pick you up). Hey Chet! Just finished your third book “To Fetch a Thief” and it was an awesome adventure. I loved when Bernie said, “I sure wish I knew how you did that!” Of course Bernie knows, Bernie knows everything, he’s always the smartest guy in the room.

Love, love, love your books. Got hooked on the first one on books on tape and now I hear Chet’s voice just like that, when I read the books. My dog Kona thinks Chet is maybe tied for #1 in the ‘nation’, ties with him of course. Although Chet would proably prefer Mocha who is a she dog.

Can’t wait for the next one, but happy that you mentioned this website on the acknowledgements. I’m guessing that was Chet’s idea, or maybe Suzie’s?

Golly!… We are finally home. What a nightmare shopping trip…grump!… My friend had to do her mother’s grocery shopping too just to make things even better…snort!… The store of course was a zoo. Everyone was out shopping either because of the big game or because of the snowstorm that’s supposed to move in tomorrow…grunt!… When she was finally at the cashier a big Bang! went off and everyone was ready to hit the deck. Luckily, it was only a great big balloon that popped….heh!

Go Packers!! I am not a betting dog so I have no money on them. Oh, Bernie…You should know better than that by now. I will send Chet a box of my special chew strips. He is going to need them.

T&G..I will bring a box or two of my special chew strips. Mom gets them from the vet and orders them by the case. Come to think of it, I had better bring a case or two or three.

I hope Dawson is planning on her sled dogs attending the party. What fun!

There has been some great suggestions on this blog about how to do away with salt. Many heads are better than one. Rio, Your friend can’t jump into this no salt thing and try to do it all at once. Tell her to take it slow and take her time.

It has been snowing for over four hours and they’re still just saying “light snow” but we’ve had four inches at least. A friend of mind got stuck on the freeway.

uh, Melanie, if you get a roof rake, and if you use it, and if possible, could you please take a picture. We who live in the land of no snow find this interesting.

Hi June! I’m sure mentioning the website was Chet’s idea.

Siber-H: Look at the picture of the house from yesterday. You can see where we raked the roof.

Hey to All: Be on the look out for YSAS panhandling his way over to Macy’s for the Supper Bowl. He decided to go at the last minute and, of course, being a struggling actor, had no money. He put on his homeless gear he wears for extra work.

How much money did Clarkson make?

  41. Tupper and Gilly
    6:40 pm on February 5th, 2011

Hi everyone – Tupper here. Glad we got out of our area before this latest storm moved in. Everything is now getting a coating of ice. And of course the opportunists are out there…our Gramp was looking for some help in getting some snow off his roof. He talked to lots of people and got quotes from $30 an hour (4 hour job) to $400. And then there are people in pickup trucks with ladders and snow rakes, driving around neighborhoods and offering roof clearing services…some of them are shady characters. Glad Gramp has his giant Great Pyrenees to watch over him. She really is as gentle as a lamb, but her woof is pretty convincing. Some of the “roof pushers” have stopped by, but they take one look at his dog, and take off again.
Oh and by the way, Basil and Sage won’t be at the party – Mama found out what they did to Rio yesterday and she has grounded them. Silly kats – they are still giggling…something about Paris? Those boys could get in trouble in an isolation booth!

We have ordered a big screen TV so we can all watch the puppy bowl that will be on starting at 3(Eastern)(2 Central) tomorrow afternoon. On Animal Planet of course. So Dawson, make sure you get there by then. OK? I expect you have moved into the lower 48 already. Make sure you aren’t taking the Coastal Highway. I think it is too wet there for snow.

If you have any problems with lack of snow (heh heh heh) Alice will pick you and the Huskies up in the Lear.

Rio has decided to go with Wookie. Sniff. I don’t think he wanted to see Alice piloting a Lear Jet.

BTW I have sent Wookie a Debit card. The pin number is the same as Wookies Agent number. You do know that don’t you Wookie?

Oh, and I bet wookie would pick up Clarkson unless he wants to have Alice come over there. She could you know. It is just a hop and a skip in the Lear and someone has to drink all that champagne.

I just got a call from YSAS. He’s still on the road. I told him to look out for Wöökie. I also told him that Barb and MagPie wanted to know how much he had made.

Nothing so far, but he did remind me of when he was going to acting school in NYC and he was sitting on the stoop of the school. It was a hot day and he’d taken his hat off when someone walking by put some bills in it. He got up to return them but the guy said to keep it anyway.

Be ready to anty up, Wookie

Hi all, You guys are fun! I just got in from shoveling, something I do maybe once a year to be nice when hubby’s off somewhere. Wow! I got a workout. The dogs had a lot of fun messing up my neat rows and now are happily chewing their giant bones. Have fun rooting for your teams 2morrow. As Chet would say, my eyes are getting heavy…

Mr.Staff says he will come and wants to know if he has to wear a costume. Teehee.
    I told him yes.

I wonder what he will wear. The last time I told him he had to wear a costume he put on his ‘Old Pro’ baseball uniform. That was from his town softball league about a million years ago. He might still have the jacket, but I haven’t seen the rest in years.

Siber – we thought you wanted to hang out on the train with us. Oh well, let’s have Alice stop by in ABQ to get us after we have dinner at Powdrell’s. Then we can all land at the same airport and head to Macy’s together.
Hey – has anyone heard from Macy?? I hope she’s not wearing herself out getting the hill ready for the party.
Maybe she’s out at the groomer’s getting ready to party with a certain Husky boy from New Mexico…

  88. Staff
    10:26 pm on February 5th, 2011

You know my Mom, Maggie, taught flight simulation for the Army WAC during the war. She got up-to-date and gave Alice a course in it years ago. Alice has been piloting quite a while now. She checks the tires every 4 days and sometimes more often. She will not be piloting all the Lear’s. She had to hire some two legged ones for the extra two because of the Newf’s.

I haven’t heard from Dawson lately. Maybe her wireless card is in a dead spot. I am sure they are doing fine on the dog-sled.

Rio, the other day when I said that the husky-euthanising man should go see you, I meant that I thought you would be the right person to hand out some punishment to him, NOT that he should go there and do something bad to you. There was a little problem with the sled dogs. One went missing at the 2nd stop and only showed up after I’d started a campfire and cooked a bit of moose…I guess the smell brought him back. That wasted 6 hours. We made real good time after that until we had a misunderstanding between the 2 largest males…things went downhill after that. Except for the sled…it stayed where it was. I had to separate the boys and finally traded both of them for a couple standard poodles. Then everything went smoothly but we only made it to Williams Lake before we needed a major rest and food stop. The 2 female Huskies really wanted to go to Texas to meet Siber H. and the 2 male Poodles were very interested in meeting Mollypop but I am too exhausted to deal with them any longer. I left them with a good friend and caught a ride to Missoula to see Ruby Jo, my newest grand-daughter.

So Alice Johnson: I’ll be at the Missoula airport by 7 a.m. in the morning. I need a ride in the Lear Jet.

Hopefully someone will see this in the morning. I just got back from the hillside. It was wet and slushy so we took some leaf blowers out to make it nicer. The tent people finally arrived. I hope nobody minds pink and purple tents. Don’t know why they brought pink and purple to a supper bowl party, but they gave me half price and I never turn down a bargain. Today was sunny and 60 degrees, we are hoping for the same on Sunday.

When you arrive, please pick up your sit-upon at the first table. I ordered them in Packers style and Steelers style. I did not order very many steeler ones (why would anyone want one anyway), so first come first served. There are also snuggies for the more delicate among us, but they should not be needed. I guess I panicked when the weather turned out so yucky earlier.

I am so happy that Staff is providing us with a TV for the Puppy Bowl. The Kat half-time show is always quite good even.

Don’t worry about the Kats on the jet. Don’t they have 9 lives anyway?

I will be at the hill by noon, but Annie, Biddy, Belle and Holly will be there to greet you. Just tell them to “shake”. They will not have internet, so talk amongst yourselves. Help yourself to the bowls and pre-party munchies.

Can’t wait to see everyone. Nite nite.
