Cool, I’m listening to the link while writing my comment. It’s excellent. Sounds like it’s actually from a real record. Remember those?
Macy, it was your cool post on color that got me musing on color . . .
Rebecca: We got “Newf Prints” (Our club’s newsletter) and there was a link for you! Third cool!
This is about a reading program in which children read out loud to dogs . . . Our Eleanor was one such therapy dog. The Pack thought perhaps Rebecca could picture all her Pack listening to her instead of two footeds.
Good Morning. Oh and a fourth cool . . . Or should I say cold this morning with the sun shining and a good still breeze!
9:35 am on October 16th, 2011
Carpola!! STIFF breeze NOT a STILL breeze. Snigglefritz

Melanie: I prefer “still breeze.” You don’t get that every day!
Good morning all.
10:19 am on October 16th, 2011
Still breeze=air hardly moving? That is what we have today. You are probably getting what we had for the last 2 days – knock-you-over breezes.
Melanie, With all your allergies, how can you drink chocolate and not coffee?
When Barb took One Summer by Baldacci back to the library, she told the librarian you would swear you were reading Nicholas Sparks. She said everyone says that. Here she thought she was being so profound!
11:06 am on October 16th, 2011
Good Morning Melanie, B, Barb&Magpie and All.
Cool here too – 49 degrees – Fireplace on – coffee brewing.
11:12 am on October 16th, 2011
Coffee = too much caffeine. Though I do drink it occasionally . . . if I want to be awake for 2 days. And that’s with decaff!
“It was a dark and stormy night. The still breeze was trifling with the dog’s fur. Black against the black night, I could see her . . . ”
Anyone want to continue with a nonsense story?

Report to Home Office
From Natasha, Vorld’s Best Undercover Spy
Re:Plunderers
Now ve are back in country vith Plunderers, is time to resume mission and report on activities by this very tricky group.
First, ve have new nemisis. Is spy in puppy disguise now residing vith notorious Howler gang. Ve might have been fooled, but von Plunderer slip, and mention Kat is spy. Ve do not understand vhy Kat is in puppy disguise vhen name is Kat. Maybe disguise department run out of Kat disguises as there are very many Kats here –
Plunderers are spending much time in talking in code. This morning code includes “still breeze”. Is alvays clue that vords are in code vhen followed by von of two code vords – either “carpola” or “snigglefritz”. Ve have checked all sources and find these are not real vords, so must be clue to code.
Superspy Maggie is sending message to Plunderers about change of Headqvarters. Many talks about “showings” and “open house”, vhich is code to say Headqvarters moving. Seems Maggie still looks for perfect new location. Vill keep you update vhen big move happens
Chief Commander BStover vas forced to slip and communicate on open band vith Commander Rio. Please have Encryption Department vork on phrase about Rangers at 7. Must be Agent Vookie is leading team of mission specialists on raid at 7, but VHEN?
Mission Tram Snowhook continues training exercise for Mission to Siberia. Has Home Office made progress in finding vhat that mission is? Ve are concerned because Commander Rio vill be leading mission. Is known from code that he vill be “riding top of sled”. Also Jr Agent Vhitey-Lance makes big progress in plan as Commander Rio looks forvard to meeting vith him.
Agent MollyPop is still tracking down some kind of cops. Is freqvent references to chase “fuzzbutts”. Also, many references from Agents Tupper and Gilly about “making clay”. Could be maybe “claymore mines”? Agent Melanie had secret meeting vith both SQ and PA. Must have been plans for next mission as SQ took something home vith him to sign. Also – Agent Rose (vhich von? two legged or four legged?) has new position in agency. Ve are very confused as ve get transmissions from 2 legged, but then is picture of 4 legged, so ve think is plan to hide real identity.
Has anyvon discovered yet vhy BlueCat is blue? Is cold? Is sad? Makes good music? VHY?
Is also possible Howlers have gotten closer to discover who NAtasha is…has been mention of Natasha’s long ago love Boris. They know he crossed bridge…do they know he is now in vonderful place vith biscuit bushes and trees that grow skinny jims? Please tell Boris not communicate vith them or tell them about Natasha.
Is all to report for now. Natasha out.

“She inched her way toward me as I held out my hand.”
11:36 am on October 16th, 2011
We need to hear from our resident author, Rebecca.
Good Morning All!
Beautiful morning here in Westchester.
Rio: I know the photo was intended for Rebecca, but I had to peek. Your friend’s project is beautiful. I am so amazed by how she creates life from paper.
Rebecca: Yep, I’ll think you’ll need another copy of your short stories in the MMS. (I still want mine autographed/pawtographed…price is no object)!!!!
11:37 am on October 16th, 2011
“A sudden movement to the left caught my attention, then hers. Something was there, then quickly it was gone. But it had been something large.”

“Her nose twitching, full of smells both familiar, and strange…”
11:39 am on October 16th, 2011
carpola! “The one IN black fur froze and….”
11:50 am on October 16th, 2011
“the temptation too strong, despite the fear, she moved forward…”
11:52 am on October 16th, 2011
Just then a flock of chickens burst over the hill and cascaded down to us in a cackling feathery rush.
11:52 am on October 16th, 2011
“She lowered herself to the ground, eyes bright…”
11:59 am on October 16th, 2011

“…eyes bright, she stalked the biggest chicken in the flock, moving intently toward the flapping feathers.”
12:17 pm on October 16th, 2011
“She was hoping to fix that splendid recipe for her new bestest friend, Kat.”
12:18 pm on October 16th, 2011
12:20 pm on October 16th, 2011
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…
12:22 pm on October 16th, 2011
Carpola! We submitted Kat’s pic to FOC, but we forgot to say her name!
12:23 pm on October 16th, 2011
“One chicken was probably not enough. Could Kat help? The Corgis certainly could.”
12:25 pm on October 16th, 2011
Ghostly!…She looks like a little ghost-siber…heh!….Her wicked eye-makeup is awsome!…snort!
12:25 pm on October 16th, 2011
Suddenly, in the center of the flock there appeared a single sheep, foaming at the moth, bottom teeth bared in a frenzied, half crazed sneer…..
12:26 pm on October 16th, 2011
foaming at the mouth
12:31 pm on October 16th, 2011
“The wind was still no more, it whipped up the crisp Fall leaves and that hid the sound of a masked puppy scampering up from behind and pouncing…”
12:31 pm on October 16th, 2011
Not seeing the rabid sheep, Kat burst onto the scene with the boundless enthusiasm of the very young.
12:32 pm on October 16th, 2011
Kat looks like a red, female version of Demon in the movie Snowdogs. That’s a compliment.
Thanks for the photos and please keep them coming. They grow up so fast, sniff sniff.
12:43 pm on October 16th, 2011
“Things were moving quickly. Kat was in trouble. The smell of the sheep’s foaming mouth was nasty. I made a leap toward the scampering Kat.”
12:43 pm on October 16th, 2011
Siber: Yes! That’s who she looks like. What awesome eye makeup. I can see why the Howlers drove for 8 hours to pick her up!
12:48 pm on October 16th, 2011
“In the melee of falling leaves, chicken feathers and bouncing pup, my Kromer cap fell off. I was looking the sheep in the eye.”
12:55 pm on October 16th, 2011
“suddenly I recognized her. It’s EWE, I cried!”
1:04 pm on October 16th, 2011
“The utter uselessness of my cry occurred to me.”
1:08 pm on October 16th, 2011
“But wait! Was that foam coming for her mouth or…..”
1:08 pm on October 16th, 2011
Ewe!…snort!heh!snort!…chorkel!
1:18 pm on October 16th, 2011
“Was that foam coming from her mouth or….Was this a pug in sheep’s clothing? A pug who had stolen a frosty paw? A pug who had escaped from his yard!”
1:39 pm on October 16th, 2011
And did I spy a small knapsack on his back?
1:50 pm on October 16th, 2011
“Just then a shot rang out. No! Wait! I cried…”
1:58 pm on October 16th, 2011
“Evil laughter was heard, and just then out from the forest stepped a borzoi in camoflauge.”
2:03 pm on October 16th, 2011
“He looked startled, then pointed towards the woods where something lay still upon the ground…”
2:04 pm on October 16th, 2011
“‘I have come to save the day!’ she cried…”
2:15 pm on October 16th, 2011
The borzoi threw the paint gun on the ground and rushed to the still figure on the rustling leaves. “Oh, vat have I done?”
2:28 pm on October 16th, 2011
I only vanted to keep little spugnik from playing harmonica! Natasha vas only trying to help by vashing it out vith soap. Ve did not realize ve vould have to RINSE it also.
2:43 pm on October 16th, 2011
“I patted the borzoi’s head. ‘Don’t worry. The foam is not from the soap but from the frosty paw. See….He didn’t play the harmonica. He’s simply been biting on it. Is he injured? Why is he lying so still?'”
2:44 pm on October 16th, 2011
“‘Or….Is he sleeping in a sitting position?'”
3:00 pm on October 16th, 2011
It could be that he had stayed up too late watching the baseball game. It wasn’t a sheep disguise he was wearing, merely the fluffy new anorak his friend was making him for his upcoming trip to the wilds of Alaska.
3:00 pm on October 16th, 2011
“The pug snorted. It was his trademark response. When words fail, a well placed snort will always do.”
3:03 pm on October 16th, 2011
Now vait a minute! You go too far. Ve know this is story of fiction, but NO VON pats Borzoi on head! Is not dignified!
3:16 pm on October 16th, 2011
“The borzoi ducked her head. ‘Is clear you are not familiar vith Natasha, vonderful spy and femme fatal. Vill forgive just this vonce.” As she finished my introductory in proper spy etiqutte…”
3:17 pm on October 16th, 2011
Introductory lesson…sheesh
3:17 pm on October 16th, 2011
And shouldn’t be fatal…I give up.
3:34 pm on October 16th, 2011
“The borzoi is frustrated after being patted on the head and steps on one of the chickens who gives a blood-curdling squeal. Kat decides it’s time to play and grabs the sheep’s clothing off of the pug and starts shaking it violently. The pub suddenly topples over and wakes up snorting and sneezing.”
3:52 pm on October 16th, 2011
Gah….Snort, What the hell is going on here? Wuffle, snuffle…
4:09 pm on October 16th, 2011
Off story here – Oley, you said Kat was picked up as a stray. Isn’t it unusual for an obviously purebred, well cared for young dog to be unclaimed? What do they think might have happened? Guess she was not MC’d? Do they think maybe whoever had her had a problem keeping her contained, and was facing a fine, etc?
Is she about 4 months? Does she have her big girl teeth yet?
She is a real beauty!
4:11 pm on October 16th, 2011
Kat dances on her hind legs, throwing the clothing up in the air . . . Oh, no The Pug is holding on with his teeth, he’s being whipped around in the air . . . Off he flies!
4:13 pm on October 16th, 2011
At that moment a plethora of Plunderers appear in the distance led by the Chicken Lady…
4:22 pm on October 16th, 2011
(whispering in back of room)… Barb and Maggie, we keep scratching our heads about the same thing. How on earth can an obviously purebred Sibe be a stray at 4 months? She is microchipped now … was done at the ASPCA. They said she was found nearby and turned in. No info on her whatsoever. We suspect foul play….as in the person turning her in only “claimed” she was a stray.
4:37 pm on October 16th, 2011
Oley, That makes sense. Probably someone who got a puppy on a whim, didn’t research the breed, didn’t have time or space, blah, blah. At least they did the right thing and took her somewhere so she could be adopted.
Most breeders tell puppy folks to bring the dog back and not put it in rescue if it doesn’t work out. Unless it was a pet shop purchase, then different story. At any rate, she certainly landed in a perfect place.
4:39 pm on October 16th, 2011
Natasha: Your report from this morning just showed up for me. It looks as though you’ve been busy and there is a lot going on with the Plunderers.
4:48 pm on October 16th, 2011
“The Chicken Lady marched up to the snorting pug who had just landed in a circle of chickens with a sheep skin dropping on his curly tail. Kat was jumping up and down making the chicken feathers fly. Each Plunderer carried a wire cage. Arms akimbo, the Chicken Lady said…..”
4:56 pm on October 16th, 2011
Heh!….Heh!…Youse guys are pretty funny!…snort!….So is that the end of the story?…chorkel!
Project!…My friend has been really busy today creating more and more little cards…sniff!…Then we had to go over to my other house and I watched her and one of her Renters caulk some outside windows…grunt!…I snuffled around all my old haunts while they were working..sniff!sniff!…All kinds of guys have been on my property while I’ve been away…wheeze!…That makes me so damn mad!…grump!
5:00 pm on October 16th, 2011
“‘Plunderers, on three!” She instructed, “One,” they readied themselves, “two, three!” and with that, the Plunderers…”
5:08 pm on October 16th, 2011
“Arms alimo, the Chicken Lady said, “Do you want the chicken fried, or grilled?”
5:10 pm on October 16th, 2011
Those arms were akimbo, not a limo…..
5:13 pm on October 16th, 2011
Off story, OH, Kat is a real beauty. Thanks for the picture!!!
T&G: While no other four-leggeds could be as royal as you, are Chet’s new friends Caramel and Cocoa of your breed???
5:31 pm on October 16th, 2011
Arms akimbo, the Chicken Lady said, “DOWN! All of you!”
They all turned to look at her.
“GAH!, We are already covered in DOWN, snort, gruffle!’ Where’s the dam vacuum cleaner?”
5:39 pm on October 16th, 2011
(whispering – off story – yes Barb, Coco and Caramel do look like beautiful little Corgi faces. Maybe they will come join the blog. We need more Corgis!)
6:10 pm on October 16th, 2011
End!…Of Story?….heh!…You guys were very creative today…snort!…Story-time on the blog…heh!…What ever happened to the chickens anyways?
Corgis!…More? I vote “No”…sniff!

Looking for advice on the Jack Reacher series:
I just purchased “The Affair.” Would it be a good idea to read this book as the first, and then continue with the series in/out of order?
6:36 pm on October 16th, 2011
Same question here. Since The Affair is a prequel I am hoping it can be read out of sequence.
I believe the game has started? Go Cardinals!
6:37 pm on October 16th, 2011
Hello? Am I on the correct Chet the Dog blog?
6:44 pm on October 16th, 2011
Hi Mollypop! This is the right blog.
6:44 pm on October 16th, 2011
Rose, I would read the books in the order that Lee Child wrote them. I can’t say why because it would give something about “The Affair” away. I can say that it would make “The Affair” more enjoyable for you if you are already very familiar with Reacher.
You have a lot of reading to do, but mom didn’t discover those books until “61 Hours”.
Gus&BooBear? What do you guys think about Rose’s question?
6:45 pm on October 16th, 2011
O.K. we promise …last one. We wanted to show you that we are busy training the Pipsqueak on spy techniques. Sasha is the one off-camera barking orders.

6:48 pm on October 16th, 2011
SiberH: I am new to the Reacher series. Did your mom start the series by reading “61 Hours.” I’m thinking reading “The Affair” would be a good idea since it is the prequel. Does Child recommend reading the prequel first?
6:51 pm on October 16th, 2011
Awww what a precious pup.
Dad was flipping channels earlier (imagine that) and ran across the Indy car race just as a horrible accident was happening. The reigning Indy 500 winner, Dan Welden, was killed. It was a very somber afternoon as the drivers waited for the news.
And now back to the cutie!
6:53 pm on October 16th, 2011
Siber-H – have you already read The Affair? Fast reading. I think you’re right about reading them in the order in which he wrote them. Reacher rocks and Lee Child’s okay, too. 🙂
OHs – Mom wants to come live with you. Dogs. Horses. Cats. Please continue to download/upload pictures. Everyone looks happy in the latest Adventures with Pipsqueak. She is beyond cute.
6:57 pm on October 16th, 2011
Just back from Lee Childs’s website. The recommended if you must read them in chronological order, says to start with “The Enemy” (prequel), then “The Affair” (prequel), and then to continue in order. I believe it is also stated the books could be read out of order.
Awww, OH! Kat is soo cute, I can’t stand it! She is definitely in a great home, with great mentors.
6:57 pm on October 16th, 2011
Molly!…. heh!…These guys all made up a story today and I was a Pug in Sheeps Clothing….snort!….That’s pretty funny…sniff!…Even if I still don’t know happened to all the chickens…chorkel!
6:58 pm on October 16th, 2011
Oley, Is she in a fenced area or totally loose? Does she wander off?
7:04 pm on October 16th, 2011
Mom read “61 Hours” first because a review said that it could function as a stand alone book. After “61 Hours” she started at the beginning of the series and read them in order. I believe that Lee Child says that the books should be read in order. “The Affair” may be a prequel but it does help to have the background of all the other books.
The Jack Reacher series is very easy to read. There aren’t a bunch of characters you have to remember and the stories don’t jump around from place to place. Complicated novels are rewarding to read but the Reacher series is very entertaining without having to tax your brain.
7:05 pm on October 16th, 2011
Did anyone notice the PBS has “A Murder of Crows” on at 7:00? We would never have known that meant a group of crows, if not for this blog. Also Masterpiece Mystery has a 2 hour mystery with Jackson Brodie as the lead character. That is the guy in Kate Atkinson’s books that we have read and loved. Have to watch that. Bee, how about you, are you going to watch it? It’s on at 8:00 cst.
7:11 pm on October 16th, 2011
Maggie, not to worry. If you click on that last picture, you’ll see that she is on a cable (which is hooked to a 50-ft cable with “trolley”). Mom knows about us Sibes…we are all born with wanderlust. Mom says the pipsqueak is too young to train on our Invisible Fence so we can’t run with her as much as we want. Its difficult to be patient.
7:13 pm on October 16th, 2011
Bluecat, Yes, We have read The Affair. We liked it.
There are three of us now saying that the Reacher series should be read in order. You will get more out of them if you do.
Fellow Sibers, Pictures are always welcome and that is a cute one. Kat is going to really enjoy being with you guys.
7:17 pm on October 16th, 2011
Rose: The pile of cuteness that is currently asleep on my feet will be heading your way shortly. She has packed and re-packed in preparation. She has wondered if she should bring more chapstick in case you like to eat it as well as wear it; I told her one will do just fine.
7:30 pm on October 16th, 2011
B&M: Yes, I’m going to watch the new Masterpiece Theater series.
7:33 pm on October 16th, 2011
Rio: The plethora of Plunderers put the chickens in the wire cages and took them back to the Chicken Lady out of harms way. Kat is back playing with her brothers and sisters and the pug has been secretly put back in his yard. The narrator is figuring out another story.
7:45 pm on October 16th, 2011
Secretly put back in your yard—does that ever happen to you?
8:16 pm on October 16th, 2011
Bee, You’ll have to let us know what you think of the new series. Do you know how many segments there will be?
Oley, yes we saw the red cable. Now we can relax!
8:19 pm on October 16th, 2011
I’m going to try that “Case Histories” on Masterpiece Theater, but will wait until it’s on the internet.
Thanks for all joining in today!

B&M: I think the series is in three episodes.
8:45 pm on October 16th, 2011
Melanie: Great idea! Next time I get the nerve to read in class, I will picture that I’m reading in the kennel. Of course, if my imagination is too good I might give an ear scratch to an unsuspecting two-legged. 🙂

MMCS: I am trying to get the next calendar put together that I would advertise on the Musher’s Mercantile, but I am trying to get it ready for the MMCS.
Last year I made a neck gaitor for Coach to wear at the re-start of the race. I made it quickly. I insisted it wasn’t my best workmanship, yet he insisted on wearing it (in fact, he took it back home to wear in the not so well known frigid temperatures of southern Utah). Each of those in our pit crew asked wear Coach got his neck gaitor. There have been requests from members of the pit crew for neck gaitors of their own.
I am making dog paw neck gaitors for the pit crew, yet can make them for the MMCS if there would be any interest. Below is the fabric used for the neck gaitor.

Mom is all nervous watching The Race to Nome, but we already know how it comes out. She is such a wuss.
9:51 pm on October 16th, 2011
Mollypop, I have seen that before on the Weather Channel. There is also a book out by the same name.
9:52 pm on October 16th, 2011
Mollypop: It’s a small world. I was on the Serum Run expedition as snowmachine support when the Race to Nome was filmed. Hannah is highlighted in the show; her father Mark helped me with my snowhmachine. We had to make it up a steep hill and my machine towing a trailer wasn’t up to the channel. I paid Mark in frozen gummy bears. Before he drove my snowmachine up the hill he said, “If something goes wrong, tell my wife I did if for gummy bears!”
9:54 pm on October 16th, 2011
Gator!….Rebeccer, I will need one…sniff!…Even though I don’t really have a neck…heh!…My friend will probably want one…snort!
Project!… Golly, she worked for hours and hours and hours today on that Gift Card Project…sniff!…She feels like she is maybe half way done…grunt!… Her fingers have rolled and glued so much paper she can hardly lift her water glass….heh!…I think she is done for the day now. We need to concentrate on this crazy game!….Wooooo!…Go Cards!…snort!
10:41 pm on October 16th, 2011
I’m depressed watching the 3rd inning of last night’s baseball game. What a disaster. I think I’ll delete the rest of the game and watch Masterpiece Mystery instead.
Neck gaiters: You can’t have too many neck gaiters. I’m in.

Winter wonderland today. Pretty and peaceful. Took the dogs for two walks on the flood plains. By the end of the month I expect it to be too cold or for the snow to be too deep so I am trying to let the dogs run loose now. I am also gathering up books to read over winter.

CHarris: I’m jealous. It’s been nothing but rain and mud at the kennel. It started raining last night and hasn’t stopped. I just finished slipping and slidding through my evening chore routine.

We watched Case Histories and it was very good. Jason Isaacs is perfect for the part of Jackson Brodie. He looks just like we pictured him while reading the books. They gave previews for “Next Time” for part 2. Does that mean next Sunday?
Going to hit the sack. Sweet dreams eveyone, and Go Cards!

Borzoi: A neck gaiter is like a leg warmer for the neck. You pull it on over the head and it encircles your neck, keeping out the wind and snow.

Auction Central has been thanked with a race story all their own, yet thanks to each of you who contributed, edited, resized photos, or bid—you made Snowhook’s first online auction a success.
Irresistible
I may have been partly or wholly to blame, yet the way I see it, the moment’s lack of resolve could hardly have been avoided.

They hatched mid-day when I was away, with disappointment at my absence and eagerness of what the next moments would bring, I lifted the roof of the dog house to find mama embraced by the open mouths of eight pups. Stroking the right side of her face, I congratulated the new mother, “Twig, beautiful girl, you did well,” in answer, her head pressed heavy against my hand. “May I?”
As I reached for the first, the largest pup, black with burst of white fur and the requisite pink belly, the long, freckled nose of his mother nuzzled my hand. Careful, watch the head, she cautioned.
One by one, gently and with joy, I lifted, examined and held each. Six girls and two boys, each completely and purely perfect. White and small, she was the last subjected to my affection and adoration. I lifted the pup, eyes closed to the world and an open mouth searching for the warm and giving undercarriage of her mother, I held her in the palm of my hand. She held me in hers.
The bubble gum belly exposed was more than I could resist. Without thought, my thumb glided over her pink belly. It would be the first of many tummies given to the small girl.

Time would turn the pups, once able to fit in my palm to full grown canines of varying sizes, yet throughout her puppyhood, the routine remained the same. During free run with her siblings, never straying more than a few yards she would return back and demand to be lifted and given a belly rub. One evening, holding her in my arms, giving the obligatory—no obligation at all—stroke of her belly, I confided, “Little one, it is going to be a long trail to Nome if we have to stop every few miles for a belly rub.”

Snowhook Bella: Your “affection and adoration” for the puppies shows through with every word. Thank you for those words.

Belle: I am excited to know that you are packed, and ready for your mission. I think your two-legged mistress is right, one chapstick will be fine.
Rebecca: I would love a gaitor! I always seem to get emotional when I read your writing. Reaching for a Kleenex now…sniff.
