Beginnings (More – Revised)

On Sundays we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Peter Abrahams books in chronological order, including those written under the Spencer Quinn pen name. A while back we did this one, but forgot to mention that it was our little Hamlet. Wyatt, the main character, is taking Hamlet in English in high school. Hamlet has a hard time with the question of whether he should believe the ghost of his father; Wyatt has parallel questions about his own father. The answer comes dramatically in both stories. (But of course we always try not to push this kind of thing too far – trust the reader!) Here from 2010 – #23, BULLET POINT, a YA novel with hardboiled – and Elizabethan – roots.

[“Gutsier and sexier than most YA novels dare, Abrahams’s thriller wrenches guts with a Richard Price-like facility. Readers will be as irretrievably drawn in as Wyatt.”
– Daniel Kraus, Booklist Starred Review]

Times were bad. Baker Brothers Iron and Metal Foundry went bankrupt. They fired everybody, including Rusty Halenka, who’d worked the seven-to-five on the main furnace for fourteen years. That meant he was around the house a lot. Rusty was Wyatt Lathem’s stepdad. They hadn’t gotten along when times were good.

We think of the quote, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be.” Act 1 scene 3. Our grandpa worked for a Jewish Grover who always said that.

    Hello Everyone–

    B. a belated thank you for finding the Chet on cats drinking quote AND for the information about Kindle search function. Now I know how that one student a while back found the econ. term in the Twilight series (I really need to learn to let this stuff go.)
This really is a snappy beginning, but I’ve grown to dread anything involving a hard-to-get-along-with step-parent (or birth parent, for that matter). I may make an exception for the Hamlet part, though.
Why is anyone painting in this weather?

oh, wait..not everyone has the same weather, I guess. Still, I’m gonna just be inside today getting ready for school WHICH STARTS TOMORROW! Yikes!
Enjoy whatever activities y’all have chosen for today…
Unless you’d like to take turns mentioning a standout Hamlet memory (mine is a production from two years ago which drafted a local Vietnamese dance group to portray the troupe of players; it was a bit strange…)

Humidity! ….Has descended upon us for the next couple of days, so no painting will be happening…grunt!…I was really looking forward to walking around on wet paint, let me tell youse!…heh!heh!

Baseball!…We here took advantage of the high humidity and the cancelled paint job to watch the Rockies vs the Cardinals….yeeep!….That was a big mistake by golly….groan!wheeze!

    Rio: check your Beauphone.

Tenzing always enjoyed helping with painting. The summer our Lady painted the exterior of the house without telling the Giant, well, Tenzing was practically a paint sample.

Kids!…We took a short trip over to visit those kids (again). The same ones I had to endure when we first moved here for 2+2++ months…grunt!…No change there. They are all still unsavory and living in a pig-sty….grump!…It’s not their fault I guess, but whose ever fault it is is really making me growl….grrrrrr! 2 “is’s” in a row. Is that legal grammatically? Stover? …yeeep!

I had a lot of guests this summer so missed out on the painting opportunities and now it is a typical chilly and rainy August.

Misting rain is still rain and it makes me want to snuggle in bed and sleep.

CHobbit!…Apparently, we here have many painting projects in front of us…snort!…Youse could fly on over here and paint to your hobbit-heart content if you wanted to…chuffle! …Right now it is too wet out to paint. But that soon shall pass and my poor friend, who hates painting with her whole heart, will probably start painting…grump!

Shooting!…Another sad day of some asshole shooting up an event…grump!…So incredibly sick of this guns-in-the-hands-of-sociopaths bullshit….puke!…I guess they can lie better than most of us….wheeze!
