Beginnings (More)

On Sunday we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Chet and Bernie’s (as part of Chetspeak) – and now taking on all the Peter Abrahams novels in chronological order. Here, from 1994, #7 – LIGHTS OUT (first of what might be called the prison novels – the others are END OF STORY and DELUSION. Also probably the second-most Bahamian of the Abrahams novels, after PRESSURE DROP. And an Edgar Award best novel finalist):

Man is the word. You can’t stop hearing it when you’re inside. “You crazy, man?” “You fuckin’ with me, man?” “Fuck you, man.” “Shi’, man.” “Sheet, man.” “Shit, man.” It doesn’t mean a thing. It’s just an itch no one can stop scratching, a sore tooth no one can stop probing.

I am really enjoying the Sunday beginnings! Another great one!

About 6 or 7 inches of slushy snow overnight in this neck of the woods. The snow should all be gone quickly as temps here are expected to be in the mid to upper 60s on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Happy Sunday tp all!

That Beau had a bit of a surprise last night when he unpacked, I’m sure. I caught the Thieves, er, repacking his bag. They took out some of his best Hawaiian shirts—-the ones with the Ten Commandments and ponies walking on water—-and added a mess of hot wings.

Until he returns, bible study is on me. Chapter one, verse one…

Unfortunately, the version of Lights Out that I have is the same version shown on the blog (which I believe is the paperback version), although there still was a picture of OFA inside the back cover, which I have copied below. This book was published in 199, is the ninth novel that he wrote, and is one of three for which OFA was nominated for an Edgar Award, that nomination being in 1995 for Best Novel (as noted in the post). The other two nominations were for Down the Rabbit Role, nominated in 2006 in the Best Young Adult category, and Reality Check, nominated in 2010 and for which he did win the Edgar in 2010 in the Best Young Adult category, which as I recall occurred during the early days of the blog and which we followed in real time as someone at the event was posting the winners as they were announced.

The Bible According to Luna class came to a screeching halt today. The Thieves are kinesthetic learners—-they have to really get their paws on something to really understand it—-so we went to the ship they, er, procured for Beau, Noah’s Bark, to get a better understanding of cubits. I’m not sure if who was more surprised—-the Thieves or the vacationing Beau. We found him eating hot wings and placing bets. That pug really knows how to let his tail unfurl.

It should be noted that Noah’s Bark is in dry dock. I set one Thief to the bow and the other to the stern to teeter-totter the ship so Beau could feel like he is at sea. For my part, I’ve got the garden hose pointed in the direction of Beau’s watercraft so he gets the feel of ocean spray on his snout.

Anyone want to take a bet that Beau has an ‘I’m the king of the worlt’ moment on the bow before the day is done?

Beau: We we’re going to pack a vat o’beer in your bible, but we would of had to cut a bigger secret compartment. Sorry your vacation included kats, but if it helps, we now have a full understanding of cubits. There are more than a twobit, but less than a fourbit.

    Wose: Happy belated Birthday!

    Lights Out!
I read this novel and the other “prison novels” mentioned, although details are now sketchy in my mind. Even the details of The Tudor, which scared me and scarred me, are now sketchy. Not Zippy, though. My brain remembers him like yesterday! Wait now, what did I do yesterday?

    Masquers: Dallas/Fort Worth?

Wookie’s and Teddy’s Dad: 😀 Thanks for the memories!
