Beginnings (More)

On Sunday we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Chet and Bernie’s (as part of Chetspeak) – and now taking on all the Peter Abrahams novels in chronological order. Here, from 1992, #6 – REVOLUTION #9 (second of the ’60’s novels, after HARD RAIN). (From the Chicago Tribune: “…Charlie’s hunt through the past is an often painful but always gripping story. Abrahams weaves in and out of time and temperament with considerable skill, and reminds us with each plot twist of the damage Vietnam did to the soul of America.”)

The boy was named Ronnie. The only surviving photograph shows him in his batting stance. What can we tell from it? That he hit from the left side. That he wore his hair long, in the style of the time. That he had a solid-looking body, and a reliable-looking face. That there was nothing particularly cute about him – Norman Rockwell would never have put him in the front of a picture. But Ronnie might have appeared in the background, diving into the old fishing hole. And he might have grown up to be quite handsome. Going beyond that would be pure speculation. How much character can be read in the face of an eleven-year-old boy?

Here we go. This is the photo on the back of the first edition of revolution #9. This was published in 1992 and was OFA’s sixth novel. Also, note the two additional reviews on the back cover; this book really did draw a lot of critical acclaim.

Did anyone know that he apparently also wrote one non-fiction book called Turning the Tide: One Man Against the Medellin Cartel (with Sidney Kirkpatrick)? It’s listed in the list of his books on the inside cover.

Happy Egg Day to all! Today is my 14th birthday, though I don’t look a day over 5 (39 in Meashka years). I celebrated with many of my Aiken doggie friends at a party in my honor, which for some unknown reason was raising funds for the sheriff ‘s K-9 unit.
    Party On, Plunderers!

    Meash: Happy birthday!

More to Meash: Sierra is like me. Neither of us were born in the kennel, but she has become a fixture. I am so proud of her. I help her with her school work and wotnot. Have you ever done eighth grade math? It’s a beast. Chet is right to only go to two, but the homeschooling gods see it differently so Sierra and her grandpa have to know a lot more numbers. Both Sierra and I are tired today. Who could blame us? Ole Doc keeps poking me with a stick to make sure I’m alive. I insist that he is not to poke Sierra. That is my job.

For those of you not on Facebook this was on the Snowhook site.
I was wondering about Sierra and went to look. This is the blurb from the Willow Jr 100 Sled Dog Race participant list.

“Sierra, 14, lives in Lime Village, a small village of about 20 people. Her grandpa got her into mushing at a young age, then she worked on a glacier with Justin and Rebecca Savidis (ShowHook Kennel). Sierra says “Working up there with the dogs gave me an insight working with them professionally. I now hope that in the future that the dogs and I become an Iditarod finisher and start our own tour business.” This is Sierra’s first Willow Junior 100 race. Have a fantastic time out there Sierra!”

Rio, I am sorry about the photo yesterday. That was Keiko sitting by the smaller kats. She refused to move. Jealous maybe? I am not sure. She is sitting by me again right now. I think I had better stop playing with this machine and give her a little hug.

    Nighty noodles.
