Beginnings (More)

On Sunday we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Peter Abrahams novels including those written under the Spencer Quinn pen name. Here, from 1988, #4 – HARD RAIN, almost certainly the first novel where the Woodstock Festival was an important plot element. It’s now been digitally republished by the excellent folks at Open Road and that’s the cover you see here.

[“A good thriller needs style, atmosphere and a surprising plot. Hard Rain…has all of these and something extra: depth of feeling…constantly suspenseful, the atmosphere effectively nightmarish. This is a savory thriller about some unsavory secrets.” – The New York Times Book Review]

The man they called Bao Dai lived in a three-colored world. Brown was the color of leeches. Orange was the color of Corporal Trinh’s decayed boots. Green was the color of the jungle and of misfortune.

A sloppy day here with snow and rain that will turn to ice tonight as the temps will be going down to single digits.

Full lunar eclipse of the Blood Moon tonight.

BooBear: Hopefully after your move is complete, you can finally enjoy rest and retirement!

    Good day to all!

Mom has been packing non stop since Christmas. It’s a lot of work but hopefully the move will go smoothly. She is currently sitting at Half Price Books waiting to sell some books. NOT any by OFA….those are cherished and pawtographed by Chet. They will have a special place in the new house. Mom is not looking at books right now. She doesn’t want to walk out with more than she brought in.

Even the review is scary. I need a EKG before I read this book!

Hooray for BooBear’s Mom for gettin’ ‘er done and for CHobbitz for the latest adoptions.

Wose: If it clears up a bit we may get to see the eclipse.

My computer has been down the last few days but today when I turned it on, it actually came on. If I disappear for awhile in the near future it is the computer, not me, that is gone.

Dawson: my thoughts exactly. That book might be too scary to read. I think Friend has read them all so I await Rio’s review.

BooBear: Are you the one driving car load of kats to your new place? I had one loud meowy kat in my car yesterday on the way to the adoption clinic. A mere 18 minutes drove me crazy. I had to warn her new owners who adopted her that she would meow loudly until she got home.

It was 8 degrees and overcast this morning. Now it is clear skies and 2 degrees. It will pay off if I get to see the Super Moon this evening.

Hobbitz – don’t trust Rio’s review. A few years ago I read one recommended by Friend. Man, I haven’t recovered from that yet! (Can’t remember the title, but it was about a monkey.)

We have clear cold skies here tonight, so perfect viewing for the Blood Wolf Moon. Not too much happening with the eclipse right now but it is starting.

Regarding Hard Rain, don’t be put off by the start. A really great book and interesting memories for us of the Woodstock generation.
