Beginnings (More)

On Sundays we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Peter Abrahams books in chronological order, including those written under the Spencer Quinn pen name. Now we’re onto the short stories. There are 4 Chet and Bernie short stories, all available digitally. The fourth – so timely! – is SANTA 365, in which Chet and Bernie encounter – or maybe personify? – the Christmas spirit. And for newcomers – the C&B series can be read in any order, no problem. If you want to start with the next one (HEART OF BARKNESS, coming July 2), feel free!

“There’s no Santa Claus,” Charlie said.

“Who told you that?” said Bernie.

“Esmé.”

“Who’s Esmé?”

“At school.”

“Well,” said Bernie, “everyone has their own opinion.”

“It’s not an opinion, Dad,” said Charlie. “It’s a scientific fact.”

“Oh?”

“From a scientist.”

“Any scientist in particular?”

“Groucho Marx.”

“Esmé told you that?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Know much about Groucho Marx?”

Charlie shrugged his skinny little shoulders. “He was a scientist and he said there ain’t no Santa Claus.”

“What do Esmé’s parents do?”

“Drive her to school. Pick her up.”

“I meant for a living.”

“Like you’re a private eye?”

“Yeah. Like that.”

“I don’t think they’re private eyes,” Charlie said.

“Why not?”

“They’re rich.”

    Greetings!

The beginning of “Santa 365” could be my favorite of the e-stories!

Last night, Grizz and I attended his office holiday party. What can I say? The worst part: Most people drank a lot and got stupid. The best part: Grizz won $500 cash in the office secret Santa! :^)

Our Alaska friends continue to be in my thoughts.

    Create a good Sunday!

Wose: Even though I am Mrs. Bah-humbug, I like the Santa 365 e-story the best of all the e-stories. That said, I could refresh my memory by re-reading them all!

I’m having my morning coffee, waiting for the sun to rise, thinking of Hobbitz and Anchorage, the big mess they have to clean up, grateful no one died, thinking of Hobbitz sleeping in her clothes – ready to run outside when the next aftershock hit, picking up her tossed artwork, looking for her cats. Do what heals you from the effects of this quake, Hobbitz. Take care of yourself.

Here is the sunshine, we haven’t seen for a week! Glorious!

My favorite story is “A Cat Was Involved” because, we’ll, a cat was involved, Not a very nice cat, if I recall correctly, but a cat nonetheless.

Our community is building a no-kill SPCA which will open next spring. When I filled out the application to volunteer, they asked me what I was interested in doing. Got me to thinking that Plunderers might be interested in helping also, so I signed Rio up as a baby kitten bottle feeder. The Theives can help also!

Still worried about our Alaskan friends!

HOH: all kitties are accounted for and being very well behaved post quake, even Mr. Too Big

Mary: kittens that need bottle feeding need care around the clock and you will need to stimulate them to pee. Just saying.

1400 aftershocks so far but 600 were 2 or 3 so those aren’t really felt. I don’t even pay attention unless they are 3.5 or 4. Only five were over 5.0. Things are going well. I hired my Housesitter to help me today so feel more put together. I will be out and about tomorrow. It was just announced that schools will be closed all next week.
    Take care

Mary: Kitties are no walk in the park—-just ask Beau. We are happy to volunteer as your emotional support Outlaws whilst you train kittens to flush a toilet. Wuffle!

Rio: no comment about the 1400 aftershocks?

I couldn’t remember if I had fed Sadie supper or not and she wasn’t telling me. She might have gotten two suppers. Ever since I mentioned the 1,000 pounds of dog food, she has been feeling peckish.

Aftershocks!…1400 is more than 2!…snort!…But they aren’t just happening under your house Hobbit. They are happening within a very large area including Willow where our beloved Pixie and Giant live…snuffle!…I do worry about them and all the structures they have built out there on their beautiful homestead/kennel. And all the guys who live there…sniffle!…Lots of folks are having a hard time with aftershocks and probably the initial shock of the first big one too. Lasted a minute I heard! Can you even imagine??….wuffle!…Our hearts go out to all those Alaskan folks who are trying to recover from this major earthquake. The highways look like a big mess…gruffle!…How will the Pixie get to her work???…yeep!

    Beau is a good dog!

Hobbit, I cannot imagine that much rocking and rolling! Yikes! Did you lose much art due to beakage?

    Mighty noodles, all! Sleep tight.
