Beginnings (More)

On Sundays we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Peter Abrahams books in chronological order, including those written under the Spencer Quinn pen name. Now we’re onto the short stories. There are 4 Chet and Bernie short stories, all available digitally. The third is TAIL OF VENGEANCE, also known as the Teitelbaum Case, an episode in their career which Chet recalls more than once in the series, and always with horror. And for newcomers – the C&B series can be read in any order, no problem. If you want to start with the next one (HEART OF BARKNESS, coming July 2), feel free!

“I think my boyfriend is cheating on me.” We should have walked away at that very moment, me and Bernie, or better yet run, our tails between our legs. Not so easy in Bernie’s case, since, maybe like you, he’s stuck with living a tailless life, poor guy. Imagine that! Actually, I can’t. The good news is that I’ve got enough tail for two, a strong, bushy, pleasing-to-the-eye tail that even has a mind of its own. Sometimes it wags me! Or just about. I’m not so easy to wag, being a hundred-plus pounder, and strong for my size, Bernie says. And not just Bernie: ask some of the perps up at Northern State Correctional, although they may not have time for chitchat, what with being so busy breaking rocks in the hot sun. The point is we’ve taken down lots of perps here at the Little Detective Agency. Bernie’s last name is Little. I’m Chet, pure and simple.

ALR, Mom is also worried about missing her friends, especially since she is moving away. But, she will be able to come visit! And in these days of electronic communications, it is much easier to keep in touch.

On a panic note, Mom will be far away from Murder by the Book, the bookstore OFA often comes to visit and sign books. I don’t believe Dallas is on his regular schedule for visiting. Another reason to come back to the Houston area for a visit.

BooBear, find a reasonable and clean “inn” or motel so you can go back to Houston for book signings. Make sure it is pet friendly if you wish to include a cat or twelve.

Leftovers!….snort!….Has everyone ate all their left-overs yet?….grunt!…Sadly this year the turkey gravy is very bad so there has been no hot turkey sandwiches…grump!…I think there will never be another turkey dinner at Thanksgiving for quite a while. My friend says not until someone leaves will there be another dinner….sniff!…I hope it’s not ME!ME!ME!

We went out for turkey dinner so not a lot of ‘tovers BUT mom is doing a quick and dirty dinner tomorrow . She is baking 2 turkey tenderloins with herbed stuffing and mashed potatoes. This is to substitute for leftovers.

Vote!….They here have taken a vote and there will be NO Turkey Left-Overs or even a dinner here next year…sob!sob!sob!…Seems someone finally woke up to the extensive work involved and the Cost…and the fact she(mother) can’t really cook anything good anymore….wuffle!…And my friend says she is not willing to foot the whole expense and “WORK” of a Thanksgiving Meal for ungrateful people either….sniff!…So next year we are going to a lovely Hotel and having a lovely dinner without those people…chuffle!…I am sure I am going too. I’m just sure of it…wheeze!

    ACK! I have the hiccups.
We still have plenty of leftovers. The gravy is holding out and although it was only an 11.5 pound turkey there are only two of us and so we will probably have it for two more days.
Then I will finish off the turkey soup. I have the broth and the turkey in the fridge waiting for a little more inspiration before I work on finishing it.

Rio: your friend has been a saint these last few years cooking and cooking and dealing with unpleasant/ungrateful people. Good for her for putting her foot down. So…what is the plan for Christmas dinner?

My sister made 98% of the Thanksgiving dinner and bought the ingredients. The deal was that I would buy all the ingredients for our mother’s fruitcake recipe that hasn’t been made in 15 years. I was feeling sorry for my sister until I started buying the ingredients for fruitcake. Yikes! Expensive. I bought a tin of the spice, Mace, for $9.69 as the recipe needed 1/8 t.

My sister asked me to make yam-marshmellow casserole dish. I finished it off at my sister’s. It was to broil for 5 minutes. I had noticed that her rack was a lot closer to the broiler than in my oven and yep it caught on fire and the smoke alarms went off. I took it out the door, lifted off the burnt marshmellows leaving plenty of creamy marshmellows intact. However, only a couple of people ate a serving out of duty. My sister had two other potato dishes so I don’t know why she had me make a third. After the fire incident, I probably will be asked to bring sparkling cider and napkins in the future. Fine with me.
