Beginnings (More)

On Sundays we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Peter Abrahams books in chronological order, including those written under the Spencer Quinn pen name. Here from 2013 – #31, THE SOUND AND THE FURRY, sixth in the Chet and Bernie series (and first one on their road trip). We had a reader contest for the title – all the readers were told was that it was a southern novel.

[“Spencer Quinn’s masterful job of having a canine narrator isn’t cutesy, nor does it grow tiresome, a tribute to his wordsmithing.”
– New York Journal of Books]

“One thing’s for sure,” the lawyer said, handing Bernie our check, “you earned every cent.”

Bernie tucked the check in – oh, no – the chest pocket of his Hawaiian shirt, just about his nicest Hawaiian shirt, with the hula dancers and the trombones, but that wasn’t the point. The point was we’d had chest pocket problems in the past, more than once. And possibly more than twice, but I wouldn’t know, since I don’t count past two. What I do know is that checks have a way of falling out of chest pockets.

“What’s he barking about?” the lawyer said.

Bernie glanced at me. “Just wants to get rolling,” he said. That wasn’t it at all: what I wanted was for Bernie to put that check in his front pants pocket where it would be safe. But then I realized that I did kind of want to get rolling. Wow! That was Bernie, knowing my own mind better than I did. And I knew his exactly the same way!

Good morning BSD and everyone. Scary parts? You betcha!
We love Beginnings and Chetspeak and Egg Day and Sunday.
Days with lots happening are good days. Rain is just starting
here. We may have a couple days of it.
    Have a super Sunday.

    Good morning all.

Rose: There is an interview with “Robert Galbraith” in today’s New York Times Book Review in case you’re interested.

Good to hear from the Howlers.

Hey BSD, HOH, Masquers, B. Stover and whoever checks in later.
I’ve never understood how Bernie can have memory lapses like the check-and-chest-pocket thing. He went to West Point, after all…and yeah, I seem to remember some scary parts also in TSATF.
I hope you’ve all been well and out of hurricane/tropical storm territory.
We’re headed for the high 80s here which is not ideal for the local Polish Heritage Fest I’m due to attend shortly, but some strengthening liquid refreshment should take care of that.
Since my attendance here has been spotty, you may have already discussed this, but can anyone recommend “Christopher Robin”–a recently-released flick about Winnie the Pooh and his boy some decades on? It seems to have vanished without a trace…

RIO! Just checked MLB.com. The Rockies and Dodgers are tied for first place. Both teams have identical win-loss records and are playing .550 pct baseball. Both teams are certainly keeping the season exciting!

The team for Milady and me is the Cubs on account of having seen a game with Friend.

Wee!…Youse are backing a good strong team. And if the Rockies don’t make it we here are definitely rooting for Da Cubbies.. snort!…Right now they are top of the central league….chuffle!…But they are only 2 games ahead of the Brewers…gulp!…So another really close race to get to October!…yeeeep!

Wee!…Pardon me…sniff!…The Cubs are top of the National League is what I meant to say…wheeze!…But this can change very quickly depending on how many games are yet to be played and by who…yeeep!…I do not have those facts in front of my right now. I need a secretary to keep up on all this for me…weep!

Rio: Thanks for the update. You’re a good mate.

More to Rio: If you can get a good deal on secretaries, put us down for one. Belle Starr is threatening a very bad mood unless she gets one of her very own.
