Beginnings (More)

On Sundays we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Peter Abrahams books in chronological order, including those written under the Spencer Quinn pen name. Here from 2009 – #22, DOG ON IT, first in the Chet and Bernie series. It reached #7 on the NYT bestsellers list.

[“At last, a dog lover’s mystery that portrays dogs as they really are…. Quinn’s characters are endearing, and his narrative is intriguing, fast-moving, and well written. Even cat lovers will find it entertaining. [DOG ON IT] is highly recommended.”
– Library Journal (starred review)]

I could smell him – or rather the booze on his breath, before he even opened the door – but my sense of smell is pretty good, probably better than yours. The key scratched against the lock, finally found the slot. The door opened and in, with a little stumble, came Bernie Little, founder and part-owner (his ex-wife Leda walked off with the rest) of the Little Detective Agency. I’d seen him look worse, but not often.

He mustered a weak smile. “Hey, Chet.”

I raised my tail and let it thump down on the rug, just so, sending a message.

“I’m a little late, sorry. Need to go out?”

Why would that be? Just because my back teeth were floating? But then I thought, what the hell, the poor guy, and I went over and pressed my head against the side of his leg. He scratched between my ears, really digging his fingers in, the way I like. Bliss. How about a little more, down the back of the neck? I hunched my shoulders a bit, giving him the idea. Ah, nice. Very nice.

An immediately engaging and familiar beginning. Dog On It!

CHobbitz: Your hike along the glacier sounds refreshing!

HOH: Knit in Public Day? Sounds like a hoot but the cats here think you should add cats into the mix. Knit in public with Cats Day. Double the fun!

BearSpiritDog: I watched Justify win the Triple Crown! It was all over very fast. I had my pretend bet on Gronkowski and he came in second.

I remember reading this at the book store and immediately wanting to see the world through Chet’s eyes…and nose!

    Good morning all.

Dawson, that could have been a hoot if the kitties would have stayed nearby, or are you saying the yarn would have kept them occupied? Watched a TV program where a guy built an ankle brace for an injured elephant and all we could think about was Chet and Peanut!

The picture from last night is (left to right) Alice, Abbie, Keiko and then Henry. Alice looks like that a lot now. She is “resting her eyes”. Henry is now the big kitty.

Staff, we loved the picture. Alice and Abbey looking lovely as usual and Henry and Cupcake-o look like they love to make trouble.

I was a little puppy when you came to visit. Now I’m five years old. And my Mommy, oh dear, will be 77 next month!

Hi, guys! Loved that opening paragraph of Dog on It! Like B, I was hooked and wanted to continue with the story.
Didn’t watch the Belmont but was very excited about Justify winning. Hoping to see a replay.
Loved the pictures yesterday. Abbie, I didn’t realize you and Alice were approaching 20. My oldest sibling is 14.
Waiting impatiently for the name of the new Chet & Bernie book,

The DDD showed me on his FB page where Buddy will soon be leaving Erie to work for Apple. Do not know if it will be east coast or San Jose area. We are just glad that he is doing AOK.
