Beginnings (More)

On Sundays, we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Chet and Bernies (as part of Chetspeak) – and now taking on all the Peter Abrahams novels in chronological order. Here from 2008, #20, INTO THE DARK, 3rd in the Echo Falls series for younger readers. A nice fit for Memorial Day Weekend, and because of that, instead of the beginning, here’s a little bit of Mr. Sidney, the old school bus driver, talking to Ingrid and her friend Ty.

“Very next morning they had us on the road to the prison camp. Not going to talk about the Death March – you can look it up. Not going to talk about the starvation, or the disease, the heat, or what happened to anybody who lagged behind, even to drink from a mud puddle.”

“What happened to them?” said Ty.

“What did I just say?” said Mr. Sidney.

[“I’ve read the two previous Echo Falls mysteries featuring Ingrid (Down the Rabbit Hole and Behind the Curtain) and enjoyed them, but I think this one may be the best of all.”

I really liked the Echo Falls Series. I was looking forward to Ingrid growing up. I wonder if Our Favorite Author had ever thought about that? You know, to get about the age of Nancy Drew. ;-D

Rose: I was curious to see what Mr. Sidney said about what he was “not going to talk about.”
