Beginnings (More)

On Sundays, we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Chet and Bernies (as part of Chetspeak) – and now taking on all the Peter Abrahams novels in chronological order. Here, from 2006, #16, END OF STORY. (A Publishers Weekly and Entertainment Weekly best book of 2006)

[“… cunning… very scary… Abrahams writes prison scenes that can curl your toes, but nothing captures the brutality of the life more expressively that the material turned out by Ivy’s class.”
– New York Times Book Review (Marilyn Stasio)]

“How is going the writing?” said Dragan Karodojic.

Closing time at Verlaine’s Bar and Grille on Schermerhorn Street, no one left inside except Dragan, the dishwasher, mopping the floor, and Ivy Seidel, the bartender, cashing out.

“Not bad,” Ivy said. The question – how her writing was going – was the biggest one in her life, with her all the time, and the true answer was she had no idea.

I like the beginning of End of Story. Several good names worthy of What’s in a Name post. I did read this years ago so the names are familiar but the details are lost to my poor memory.

    Happy Earth Day!
    There is a google doodle.

A beautiful day to get out in the sunshine and watch the snow disappear.

I left the house for an hour yesterday and when I returned there were the deer who have been slurping up my bird seed from the feeder, caught! red hoofed! They acted astonished that I was telling them to scram. I took the bird feeder inside because I have no high place to hang where the deer can’t reach. A neighbour has been feeding them all winter and there is a whole herd that stops by nightly and tramples through my yard. Growl!

We have 4 deer who terrorize the yard but better still is the flock of 9 turkeys. If they are crossing the road, Mr. Tom attacks mom’s bumper and won’t get out of the road. Rain, rain for 3 more days.

The naked Waffle House shooting is incredibly embarrassing.

Maskers!…When my friend is not working, or not doing yard work, or making dough, or clipping her toe nails, or reading, or listening to new music, or reading, she is online figuring out strategies on how to solve Sudoku Puzzles…grump!…This is definitely getting out of Paw…sniff!…There are no easy ways to solve these puzzles and this just bugs the hell outta her….grumble!
