Beginnings (More)

On Sunday we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Chet and Bernies (as part of Chetspeak) – and now taking on all the Peter Abrahams novels in chronological order. Here, from 2001 (and perhaps slightly ahead of its time), #11 – LAST OF THE DIXIE HEROES (all about Civil War reenactors going a little too far):

Roy thought he heard his son crying in the night. He got up, went down the hall, opened Rhett’s door, smelled the emptiness inside.

And woke up. Must have been asleep until that moment. How else to explain it? Roy didn’t turn on the light.

    Greetings!

    Good morning, HOH!

Love the premise of “Last of the Heroes.” Also like the fact that Roy’s son is named Rhett.

Happy National Sloppy Joe Day! Sounds like the kind of food Rio and the Thieves would enjoy while partaking in a big vat ‘o beer!

    Create a good day!

That’s an interesting cover with a modern cityscape in the background. (Ahead of its time indeed.)

Beautiful sunny day here and it’s supposed to get to 55 degrees.

    Good morning all.

It’s been a while since I read LoTDH, but as I recall it was a bit of a departure for OFA because it was neither a conventional thriller or murder mystery but very much character driven and psychological in nature. Nonetheless, a really gripping story and shows OFA at his best. And to commemorate, attached is the photo from the inside back cover showing OFA in 2001 (I’m not separately posting the cover of the book because what I have is pretty much the same as he posted).

I am the largest of the Outlaw litter and a bigger stature than most, er, all of the team. Today, the Giant picked me up and said, “You’ve got to be a 100 pounds, buddy!” Has this ever happened to you? Chet would understand.

Last!…Of The Dixie Heroes was a hard one for my friend to read for some reason…sniff!…Her dad’s name was Roy and there were other things. But we did indeed finish it and of course it was amazing. And very unique and a very ‘watch yer step’ kind of story…gulp!

Wait! Doesn’t swimming burn calories? I better float whilst I partake so as not to lose any weight. Glub…glub…burp!
