Beginnings

On Sundays we’ve been doing beginnings – taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel in including those written under the Spencer Quinn pen name. How many of all those kids who’ve been out of school for so long have been reading books? I hope a lot, but I’m not so sure. Maybe they’d enjoy the Bowser and Birdie middle-grade series (available to adults with fake ID). For any of you who have kids in this situation, or know some who are, here’s the start of Woof, book one in the series.

Two humans stood outside my cage, a white-haired woman and a gum-chewing kid. Gum-chewing is one of the best sounds out there, and the smell’s not bad either. I liked the kid from the get-go.

They gazed in at me. I gazed out at them. The white-haired woman had blue eyes, washed out and watery. The kid’s eyes were a bright, clear blue, like the sky on a cloudless day. I hadn’t seen the sky in way too long.

“How about this one, Grammy?” the kid said.

Wowser Bowser! He said pen name not moniker. Just when you think you get OFA figured out, he changes things.
Our two Leggers have several friends with younger children and they have grand kiddos and our two legged mom shares all of her Spencer Quinn books with them.
Enjoy this close to the end of November day. Herd

When I got braces as a teen, I had to give up chewing gum for two years. I never went back to it. When I took typing in high school, I had to keep my nails short. I still keep my nails very short. This just goes to show how habits can become permanent.

    Crime Solving:
I had bacon today with breakfast. I made an extra piece for Sadie which I gave her. I made an extra piece to split between the two kitties but they were not present so I left it on the counter. Now the bacon is missing. Sadie is too old and stiff to counter surf, Chessie doesn’t noticeably like bacon. By the process of elimination that leaves Mr. Big as the culprit since he adores bacon.

    Yay, Mr. Big!!

Rio – my girl, after an unexpected second round of chemo, had a clear PET scan in October. We’re grateful for a good report. Thank you for asking.

    Stay safe, Everybody.

Bluekat and Dawson and their littermates Amalia, Hank, Wallace, Jackson and Garcia were brought in as a litter when they were naught but fresh hatchlings. The mother stayed with us at the kennel until she returned to her person in the village. They are good doggos!

Bluekat: so happy to hear the good report on your daughter especially since I have met her, her horse and her kitties. I also remember the neat garden out the side of the house.

My sister and I got together and made our mother’s fruitcakes. There was a gap for years after she died but we re-started the tradition a few years ago. But every year we are missing an ingredient. This year we had walnuts but no pecans. Oh well, they will be basted with fine sherry for a few weeks.
